House Oversight Committee to Move to Hold Lois Lerner In Contempt
— Ace

Hm.

The House Oversight Committee will vote next Thursday on whether to hold former Internal Revenue Service official Lois Lerner in contempt of Congress, sources say.

The vote, NRO is told, will take place next week.

In a prelude to next week’s vote, the Committee last month released a 141-page report making its case that Lerner’s testimony is critical to its investigation and that she has obstructed the panel’s work by providing it with inaccurate information. The report says that without Lerner’s testimony, “The committee will never be able to fully understand the IRS’s actions. Lerner has unique, firsthand knowledge of how and why” the IRS decided to scrutinize conservative applicants for tax exemption.

108 June 2012: The GOP-led House voted Thursday to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress for failing to provide key information pertaining to Operation Fast and Furious, making Holder the first sitting Cabinet member to be held in contempt. The vote was 255-67, with 17 Democrats breaking ranks to side with Republicans in favor of contempt. The criminal-contempt vote is supposed to direct a U.S. attorney to convene a grand jury to review the case and decide whether to indict Holder. ---------------------- And what has happened? For some reason, the Dept. of Justice has failed to act.

132 "As if it will mean anything. Holder's been in contempt of Congress for how long now?"

These things are essentially symbolic, but symbolism is important.

And it matters over time. Really by now, the Obama administration should have set the all-time record for its officials being held in contempt of Congress for failure to provide timely truthful testimony. It's not just Lerner and Holder. It's Sebelius, Napolitano, Morell, Petraeus, Clapper, Lisa Jackson... a long long list.

Speaking of symbolic motions, anyone in the House willing to carry a symbolic vote of no confidence in SECDEF Hagel? The guy who left Fort Hood unprotected _again_ while instead discussing such urgent national priorities as banning smoking in the military?

Of course, the individual who really should endure a symbolic no-confidence vote is Obama, but the Beltway GOP would never dare. Rayciss! A diss of Historic First! That ain't happening. Whereas they might actually strap on their Port-A-Spines long enough to say Hagel is manifestly unfit for the job.

186 "Didn't they hold Holder in contempt for FnF ? Alot of good that did"

When you are fighting a full spectrum battle against a determined ruthless opponent, including media optics, being ready to hold people in contempt actually does matter, and you should do it.

Joe Sixpack and Jane Workaday -- who, let us remind ourselves, do not marinate their brains on political blogs six hours a day -- don't really know what "contempt of Congress even is".

But it doesn't SOUND good and it doesnt LOOK good. Optics.

Do recall that contempt of Congress charges featured prominently during Watergate, and although those charges were individually not very legally potent, hearing them voiced repeatedly helped add up in the public mind to the eventual perception that Nixon was a crook and needed to be ousted from the Presidency.

(n.b. I am not suggesting it's possible to oust Historic First, Nixon style. No one would dare. Rayciss! But a whole lot of damage can still be done to Historic First's ability to get things done before he finally does leave. Lawfare and mediafare, to include a barrage of contempt charges, are two tools in the box.)

222 "Issa got taken to school by Elijah Fucking Cummings for fuck's sake. I mean, just let that sink in. We are so screwed."

The thing that's sad is that Republicans are never ever prepared for these kinds of disruptive media-circus tactics when Democrats pull them.

Ryan couldn't cope when Biden went full retard on him in the debate, constantly talking over the top of Ryan and interrupting Ryan, never letting him get a point across. The retard won!

Issa should have known that Cummings, one of the biggest blowhards in the House (which is saying something) was going to unleash a huge indignant media-circus blusterfest, and was going to shout TEH RAYCISS ELEVENTY if interrupted.

Yet Issa walked right into that sucker punch. And had to issue an abject hat in hand apology for supposedly being teh rayciss and trying to keep a brutha down.

What Issa should have done would have been to say, "You say you have a question, Congressman?" and yielded the floor and let Cummings work his lungs for 45 minutes straight. Then ask with a smile, "Uh, where was the actual question, Congressman?"

You can make commercials out of that kind of stuff. ("45 minutes later...")

Repeating a key point, Joe and Jane _do not pay close attention to politics_.

But, Joe and Jane know that politics a dirty business, and they know that politicians manipulate process when they're trying to hide something, by doing things like loudly filibustering on unrelated topics. Give guys like Cummings plenty of room to run. Make it crystal clear that they ARE conspiring to hide something.

Is one ANTI-gay if they: Don't want to attend a gay wedding for three hours, serving slices of cake to same sex couples slow dancing and lip locking during the reception? When their religious teachings and their own natural inclinations tell them instinctively that this behavior is abnormal and should be rejected? Is one Anti Gay if they believe that legal marriages actually should be reserved for hetero sexual couples, a tradition that has been ingrained in human society for thousands of years because it has always been the natural arrangement for successful rearing of children and maintaining societal order via monogamy? Is it anti- gay to acknowledge that allowing openly gay males to be in charge overnight of teenage males during camping trips, etc. is fraught with sexually charged issues , just as it would be if the all male troop had a straight female leader? NONE of this is anti gay. It is simply stating that something that is NOT normal should be treated with some caution because it is abnormal. Anti -gay my ass. That tripe label should no longer be accepted and fluffed off. It ought to be fought instead, with reason and reality.

278 "Issa got taken to school by Elijah Fucking Cummings for fuck's sake. I mean, just let that sink in. We are so screwed." There needs to be classes for republicans on how to act. Our side needs to learn that we can do anything we want - we can stop all discussion in committees, we can fuck any waitress or congressional aide, we can cut off the heads of democrats and mount them on poles outside of the Capital Building. The only thing is you can't do something and apologize for it later. Whatever it is, do it. Own it. But don't come back later and say you were wrong or you're sorry. For fuck's sake, when will our side learn this simple rule.
