Dave Letterman has announced he will be retiring in 2015.

Good. He's plainly been longing for retirement for about ten years now.

I asked a while ago, because it's been obsessing me: Will Craig Fergussen play in the 11:30 slot?

I have no idea why Craig Fergussen has been obsessing me, but he has. I barely watch his show, but when I do, I like it, and keep wondering why I never saw it until four months ago (after several morons recommended it).

The catchy theme (which he wrote and sings) obsesses me. As do his odd choices in second and third bananas: a gay robot skeleton named Geoff Peterson and a pantomime horse.

Because the show is almost entirely improvised, it feels different than other shows. It might be good, it might be bad. Either way, it's all pretty much made up on the spot.

Anyway, I hope CBS gives him a chance to do the show as it exists right now, and don't screw it all up by demanding it be just like every other damn show on late night, with scripted crap. The scripted jokes aren't funny anyway; at least if someone's making them up on the spot there's a sports-like interest in the jokes (in as much as one's curious to see if someone can pull something off).

With an increasingly fractured audience, there is a lot to be said for doing something that's a little bit different. No, not everyone's going to watch a foul-mouthed Scotsman make up jokes with his gay robot skeleton friend and waste network time by reading emails and tweets on the air.

But you're not going to get a large audience anyway, are you?

Rumors: People seem to think that Ferguson might be some kind of conservative. I really have no idea. I doubt it. He's Scottish/European and a performing artist.

However, I do see why people might say that.

Bonus: Is This Something? Let me answer that for you, to save you the time: No.

To save you some more time, I'll tell you what it's called: "Combat Juggling."

But to keep you from being mislead into thinking this is interesting, I'll tell you what it really is: Jugglers trying to interfere with other jugglers juggling-pins.

30 Craig Ferguson is an odd one, in a good way. My husband had a philosophy professor who was randomly on his show one day. The professor is no one except he's Claire Danes' father in law, and she mentioned him offhandedly during an interview with Craig Ferguson. Ferguson was so intrigued that he got the professor to come on. At least I think it was Craig Ferguson. This might have all been with a completely unrelated late night talk show host.

38 I think the half-life of a comedian is pretty short. I thought Letterman the best in 1983, 1984. About that time, I decided Howard Stern was revolutionary funny. And then both became burned-out. Letterman has been unfunny for at least 20 years.

No one struck me as especially funny for about 15 years. Then I duscovered Adam Carolla's podcasts last year (or maybe end of 2012. I think he's the cleverest, funniest guy I've ever encountered (wonder if that really means anything.

43 It remains to be seen. NBC completely neutered Conan O'Brien when he moved from Late Night to the Tonight Show for content reasons and for political reasons. Some of the content reasons were pretty obvious, like the Masturbating Bear. The political reasons were at least partially because some jackasses at the NBC offices said "Well, he may know Late Night but Tonight Show is different!" and partially because of the other fuckup they made at the time in giving Jay Leno a variety show at 9PM CST as a lead-in to the news and Tonight Show. I'm less sure that CBS will pull that bullshit because they've seen NBC repeatedly stomp on their own dick with regards to Tonight Show succession and because they have no track record of success beyond Dave. This isn't like the Tonight Show with a history of Leno, Carson, Jack Paar, Steve Allen, etc. This is a channel whose only flirting with late-night before Letterman was the Pat Sajak Show. That implicitly means that CBS doesn't know shit about late night outside of hiring from the competition and, as a result, should be able to turn it over to Letterman's successor with a limited amount of interference.

Ferguson is hilarious but I can rarely stay up that late, and for whatever reason I never watch it the next day on OnDemand.

Part of his schtick, though, is the "it doesn't matter what we do because no one is watching". Couldn't bring that same vibe to 11:30, I don't think.

I quit my cardio workout in January so I could focus on barbells.

I just started up the cardio program last week after 6+ weeks off.

It was so easy.

Getting under or pulling on a frickin heavy barbell does wonders for your heart/conditioning.

I almost trippled the amount of time I could do at a heart rate of 160-170BPM, which is righ about max for my age at the charts Ive seen

81 Ferguson, a Scot, is patriotic, and I mean patriotic as in American patriotic. Not as in bleed America dry with Marxist/Alinsky claptrap but as in the USA is the best country the world has produced in all its existence, much less history. During a show with a weirdo as a guest, the guest got weird regarding child molest. Ferguson hit the brakes on the segment and ejected the weird guest from the show without hesitation or notice. That beats any other talk show highlight I have ever heard or seen. Who knows what comes next, but it swamps Conan the lucky plaintiff, Jimmy the former sidekick, retreaded SNL players and other Progressive toadies.

83 regarding fergusons show being almost entirely improvised, his monologue is actually scripted and enarly entirely memorized. sadly you missed his earlier shows where he had very long involved monologues that would go through all sorts of twists and turns to wind up answering a question he began with. also his original monologue was much longer than the present, the execs eventually forced him to shorten his monologue and shove a commercial in the space.

Speaking of Late Night, on Howard Stern, Howie Mandell was talking about his appearances on Johnny Carson (first when Joan Rivers was a stand in for Johnny) and how Carson fell in love with him and had him on many times. One time they called him on a set of something else he was doing and asked him if he could appear that night because of a cancellation of another guest ( Sammy Davis Jr) . Mandell said he had nothing prepared. They continued to beg him because they were in a spot and he felt obligated so he said yes on the condition that they allow him just to show up and not prescreen what he was going to do because he didn't know yet. Anyway he went to some store and looked around for props and found a large stuffed real tiger on a wheeled platform. He arranged to rent it and have it delivered to the Tonight show set along with a big carrot he saw later on the wall. Anyway he shows up and he's up and he is attempting to roll this big tiger onto the stage and it gets stuck . The audience was laughing at first and awkward silence as then the stage crew had to assist him and it was rolled over to a spot next to Johnny's desk along with the carrot on top of it. Carson was not told beforehand that any of this was going to happen and he was not very happen but tried to carry on. Howie sat down and Carson asked him " What's up with the tiger ?" . Howie answered " I don't want to talk about it. Its personal " . Obviously trying to be funny. Anyway , they cut away for a commercial and when they came back, Carson announce the next guest and Howie was never invited back again.

101 CBS was gunning for Carson in the late night game for decades.

The problem for them - and ABC, and later also Fox - was that there was just no one like Carson. He defined the show and the host's job. People forget how different the show was under Jack Paar and Steve Allen. The show and format we all know was entirely Carson's construct.

To his retirement, no one could be sure of Carson's politics, either. He was a fanatic about evening up the joke totals, to the number, over the course of a week. He was irreplaceable.

But with the rivalry between Leno and Letterman to succeed him, and the fact that Carson failed to write his last contract to give himself continued ownership and control of the show after he retired (he could have got it, there were many years when he was NBC's #1 revenue producer), CBS had the chance.

I think they are going to look for someone who can challenge Fallon, who is no Leno. I wish they would give Ferguson a shot, but I doubt they will if they can find any SNL alumni willing to try it.

Funniest clip from the Letterman show was a line of people gathered in the hallway with a sign that said, " See David Letterman, $5.00" or something like that. So the people are just standing in silence for about five seconds waiting to see Letteman when all of the sudden from the perpendicular hallway in front of them, Letterman goes across them doing a full sprint, where they see him for a tenth of a second.

117 my only negative observation of him is much of what he does is not some much a comedian or host, it is acting. he is more or less playing the role of host, whereas a traditional host is hosting he is acting as a host. lots and lots of his schtick / routine, is taken wholly from letterman. his viewer mail routine where he flashes the letter at the camera and yanks it so the viewer is not able to read it is an example, straight from letterman. If you watch him and let yourself remember lettermans early days you see lots of his stuff borrowed. it is as if he said "I need something new lets watch some old letterman shows." so his bits are "stolen" but his dialogue and his original stuff are really good.

Just because he tweaks Bill Maher, doesn't mean he doesn't agree with his politics. He is just having fun with his guest, as all these late night guys should do.

Ferguson was always the only "guest interview" I could watch. I could care less about all the celebrities. But when Ferguson interviews someone, he tries to have an interesting conversation. If the guest isn't going along, or being annoying somehow, he will turn against them. It is awesome. I've seen him be brutal.

Browsers are a dime a dozen but good, configurable IMAP mail clients that will let you do things in text/plain as God intended are few and far between. I don't do HTML mail, I don't do replies above the quoted content, I don't do message threading, and my inbox right now is 17K messages though it needs a whole lot of cleanup. Any mail client that can't support those requirements (plain text mail with reply below the quote, IMAP4 with server-side search support and STARTTLS security, and decent support for sometimes very large mailboxes) need not apply.

That was Letterman's big mistake. He was funny when he was on his 12:30 show. But, when he moved to 11:30, he was determined to be the next Johnny Carson. But, he ain't Carson. He would have been further ahead to just move his old show to the new time slot. Maybe spruce some things up with the bigger budget, but other than that, stay who he was.

243 Well the DVR lets me watch Ferguson. He is best in interviews, really really good at it. His planned sketches usually stink. I think there is a bit more behind the show structure then he says on the air. However, if things go sideways he does run with it, usuallythat is when the show is the best. Geoff has also added a lot to the show very talented guy behind the robot.

244 I can't stay up to watch any late night shows anymore, but when I was younger, my favorite magicians, Penn & Teller, were going to appear on Letterman, so I stayed up for that. And just to see if there was any additional information available, I went to the alt.Letterman forum. I have to say, I have NEVER seen fans as obsessed as Letterman fans. They knew EVERYTHING about him - what he was wearing, how his hair was cut, the state of his health, if he was married, divorced or dating... everything. And there were lots and lots of them! All avidly discussing the tiniest detail about his suit or his socks, you name it.

When I told my small group of Penn & Teller fans this, one of them said, 'But aren't we the same way on our forum?' 'Oh, yes,' I said, 'We're just the same. But WE are devoted to PENN AND TELLER! *Those* people are just crazy.'
