— Slublog The Winter Olympics begin on Friday. Athletes and journalists are starting to arrive in the coastal city of Sochi. The Russian government has spent seven years and $51 billion dollars preparing to welcome the biggest athletic competition in the world.
Well, mostly preparing.
Sochi? Well, three of the nine mountain hotels have not been completed, and the IOC estimate that 97 per cent of the rooms are ready appears to ignore the little things.Be sure to scroll down for the worst hotel bedding tale you're likely to read this week.Almost every room is missing something: lightbulbs, TVs, lamps, chairs, curtains, wifi, heat, hot water. Shower curtains are a valuable piece of the future black market here. (One American photographer was simply told, “You will not get a shower curtain.”)
Some of the pictures and stories coming out of Sochi are shocking or deeply weird, but Olympic corruption is nothing new. Russia just decided if there's going to be corruption, they might as well dream big.
The good czar's $50 billion gift to the world — by far the most expensive Winter Olympics in history (Vancouver's cost about $7 billion all in) — has raised a number of eyebrows. The CBC engages in a bit of wishful thinking and suggests that an unsuccessful games will hurt Putin's government. (Spoiler alert: Nope). Putin has always been more popular with Russians than with those in other countries, and if the games go forward without a major catastrophe (and if Russian athletes do well), he'll come out of this without much political damage in his own country. An International Olympic Committee official, Gian Franco Kasper, has said that as much as one-third of the $50 billion has been siphoned off by corruption.
That said, stories like this and this are unlikely to improve Putin and Russia's international image.
Well, until the next viral dash cam video.

Sure, the bribes and kickbacks have all been processed.
Oh wait - you mean the venues and stuff? Oh heck no, none of that is ready, only the important stuff like the graft.

I really needed this post. I haven't had a decent laugh in days. Freaking Putin is nearly as big of a bonehead as our own bonehead.
At least we can still lay claim to having the first famous black bonehead. Plus ours has the better initials.
But that's racist so I'll just go out in the global warming and condemn myself.

Oh, and the sinister foreign guest host today said something about how these days there are more butlers in London than there were during Victorian times. But it's not Dukes and Viscounts who have them, it's the Russian oligarchs.

Reminds me of when my Cav unit crossed Checkpoint Charlie and visited East Berlin. There was about a half-mile to a mile square of high-rise concrete apartment buildings that had to be abandoned because they all started to lean dangerously one way or the other. The reason? The commies built them without any rebar.

I guess it's just me, and it looks like the real concerns are far bigger here, but it really rubbed me the wrong way that the US team was told not to wear their US gear outside the village because it could make them targets.
If the olympics were being held here, right here in the backwards, repressive and there were foreign athletes out in the streets in their gear, they would be celebrated and welcomed by people here. People would be buzzing for months about how they were lucky enough to bump into a Scandi biathlon team at a Starbucks. Yet we're the haters and the ones who ruin the world.
To me, if our athletes aren't safe to go out and catch a dinner outside the village while wearing their gear, that country shouldn't be the host. Period.
Have a bit of a feeling of dread about safety. Pray all goes well.

I don't think anyone would argue with the amount of time and dedication it takes to be a world class athlete.
Especially for winter sports, I don't think anyone would argue that it is REALLY expensive to buy equipment, lift passes, coaching, and ice time for the length of time it takes to be a world class athlete.
Therefore, these athletes, one way or another, had access to means.
While some may have benefitted from donations, etc., most likely come from well-to-do families.
Rich guys get hot chicks, and make hot offspring, then pay for said hot offspring to get good at skating, hockey, skiing, or curling.

My brother described coming into Kosovo in a Russian cargo plane doing nap-of-the-earth flight at night, with the typical quality in NVG for the crew* and the pilot, copilot, and flight engineer bickering. They almost clipped a high-tension transmission tower and some idiot shot at them. Needless to say there was no need to explain why Russians drink like they do.
*Quality was somewhere below piss-poor.

It's about two LDS missionaries kidnapped in Russia and held for five days.
Bastards lured them to an apartment and beat them with baseball bats, handcuffed them, then drove them out to the middle of nowhere. They fed them like half a hotdog per day. One kid has permanent nerve damage in his hand because they kept him cuffed so tightly. They demanded 300K, but nobody paid because they didn't want to encourage more people to do copycat crimes. I posted this in an earlier thread, but a cousin served his LDS mission in Russia, and when we mailed him care packages we had to write "Bibles" on the boxes, no matter the contents, so they would not get ransacked by customs, the good stuff mysteriously disappearing. 2) Take a geography lesson. Go to Google maps and up where Sochi is located. They picked a seaside resort town that only in the best of times gets a lot of snow.
Russians go to the Black Sea for R&R. Odessa used to be `the place` to go before the USSR breakup. Sochi is south of Odessa. The committee did the equivalent of selecting Maui, Hawaii for the winter Olympics.

CNN reserved 11 rooms five months ago, one was ready. Another reporter found his hotel had no lobby, hadn't been built yet, he had to find the manager's room to check in, that's where the phone and credit card swiper were.
Rooms being let lacked doors, door knobs, furniture, heat, and curtains, in addition to shower curtains. Some floors had workers and stray dogs wandering the halls.
Yet Putin is the guy who made Obama his bitch.
