Whatever happened to classical liberalism? [KT]
— Open Blogger

Frederick Douglass loved free speech.

When did liberals stop believing in free speech?

This week, I have been passing along information to people who are trying to stop the flow of Critical Race Theory and other forms of Critical Social Justice into our schools and other institutions. Things are happening fast. Most of the people involved in pushing back are conservatives, of course. But some of them are liberals. And some of THEM are trying to re-assert the idea that there are good things about Western Civilization.

It's about time. Some people are scaling up the message. Besides conservatives, who seem to be doing more behind-the-scenes stuff like talking to legislators, organizing parent groups, etc.

Perhaps there is some hope of nudging some kids back from the abyss.

Re-asserting Classical Liberalism

James Lindsay was a little ahead of the curve on this. He wrote a piece more than a year ago about a visit to the National Archives, in which he expressed dismay at seeing one display which represented a "Critical Social Justice" message. He contrasted it to the message portrayed by other displays in the Rubenstein Exhibit:

This experiment in diversity and freedom—this liberalism—can and does work.

That liberal story stands in direct opposition to the critical one, and of course it does: the critical method is designed to be ruthlessly critical of liberalism. It is, in fact, openly and explicitly anti-liberal by design in addition to tending to present illiberally. For contrast, where the liberal story I just told is one worthy of hope and pride in what we’ve accomplished (and in under merely two hundred and fifty years after millennia of failing to do so before now), the critical story is one of pessimism and cynicism. It points to those failures in history and says that the American Experiment never worked, and it tells us that those failures tell us something more about ourselves than having found a way to escape them. It is, of course, ironic that it does this uniquely from a position that exists only because up to this point that Experiment has succeeded.

It also stands in direct opposition to the specifically Critical Social Justice story, which is the critical story of the day. That story has the gall to stand there in the success of liberalism and tell us that liberalism can’t work because the system itself was built in a corrupted state by the bigotries and biases of those who established it. The American Experiment is "from many, one,” and the Critical Social Justice interpretation of this is that "oneness” is how dominant groups in society erase and ignore the lived experiences and realities of the oppressed (or, more often, once-oppressed) and thus keep them down. In place of this message of universalism amongst individuals, it posits something like group-based social feudalism and does so on the basis of the worst possible groups we could choose for such a situation, if fragmenting as such is something we absolutely must do: markers of identity like race, sex, gender, and sexuality.

Getting into the fight

I have been passing information along mostly to conservatives this week on Critical Social Justice invading our lives, mostly via government institutions.  Here, at 1:06, we learn that biracial children are taught to identify with the non-white part of themselves by agents of the state.   Illinois is a hotbed, from teacher CRT shaming -er- training (shoveling snow is white supremacist) to activist curriculum.  Wow.

But this week I happened to run into a wokester on an institutional post. She  suggested that someone who didn't believe that the country was saturated with racism should read Kendi, plus some book along the lines of "white supremacy and me".   I suggested that another author might be more appropriate.  This started a long, fairly polite exchange in which she became rather frustrated at learning new information.  "Whataboutism", you know.  Anything other that their approach is "Whataboutism".  And she loved Kendi.

At least she would discuss briefly her ideas.  She wasn't as far gone as most of them.

Anyway, I was surprised when three social media friends (whom I have never actually met) jumped in with polite support.  One lives in Japan.  I was surprised that they even saw the post.  But it was nice.  They added valuable information.  I think it blew the wokester's fuses, though.  She was even upset that I put "Oppressed" and "Oppressors" in quotes.

Anyway, some liberals are now trying to politely challenge the leftist takeover of our society through Critical Social Justice.  Here is one sorta slick youtube video comparing liberal social justice with critical social justice.  There is a contrast here.  Do you think that "liberal social justice" qualifies as "social justice" here?  What IS "social justice", anyway?

Hope this works.

This video comes right out and suggests that The Enlightenment was a good thing.  That people being offended is not the end of the world.  Amazing.

A friend posted this video on social media, and got negative responses from two liberal friends.  It reflected "sophistry" and "neo-confederate" thinking.

Of course Critical Race Theory reflects no sophistry.  Heh.

Fascinating.

This is not going to be easy.  But don't give up.

A quote for What's a seawolf? from the comments to the last thread:

Instead of demonizing and using race as a weapon, let us move beyond racial divisions and practice RADICAL GRACE, seeing my neighbor as an individual human being just like me. Our communities need stronger ties and unity to help the least among us and chart a path upward for all.

Bob Woodson

Check the responses, too.

Hope you have a good weekend.

6 I have no quarrel with classical liberalism, but it's been a long time since that philosophy has been much of a contender in actual practice.  Even by the 1990s, the "I disagree with you but defend your right to say it" attitude had morphed into the intermediate state of "I disagree with you and it's my moral imperative to convince you why mine is morally superior" and there was a clear path to the "I disagree with you and so you must be destroyed" that we have today--thanks in no small part to Clintonian appointees who saw everything through the lens of power over others.
This is why I say I break libertarian on many social issues but don't feel like I'm 'liberal' about much of anything--us millennials never knew a time when liberalism meant something other than being bossed around by the self-styled cultural elite.

8 Forgive me but I want to make a final comment about the item in the previous about churches and the belief that white people are uniquely evil. I honestly what the implications of this are. Are they saying white are beyond grace and salvation? Are they saying people of color do not need grace, because they are without sin? I find those possibilities problematic.

12 Years! ago, there was an Opus Penguin cartoon about "Offensetivity".
It was a group of people at a bus stop and a man says to Opus, (something like) 'you penguin types offend me.' And someone else pops up with 'That sign offends me.' 'Hey!  I painted that sign and I'm offended that you're offended.'
And finally the all come to the realization that "Oh my God!  Life is offensive!!!"
And they all run away, leaving Opus Penguin at the bus stop, proclaiming  "Offensetivity" ...

White people are God's mistake. Which kind of calls into question just how omniscient and wonderful this "God" person is, and starts the road to atheism.
Plus, unless you want self loathing, if your church is teaching that you are a monster based off your skin color, why would you keep going? In a country that is at least 50% not church going what is the wisdom in trying to push more of the ones who are into the not category, unless you are working for the one who is fighting God?
Same applied to a country- does trying to tear down a large portion of the population lift up the others, or does it create a society all in the muck as the crabs start pulling down anyone who tries to leave the bucket?

First, they culturally misappropriate "equality" from it's use in scripture as cited in the Constitution, then they mal-transform it to prepare the battlespace for an all-out assault on meritocracy and private property...

As Bidet said he was going to do, too, before he had to hide that and pretend the words didn't come out of his mouth. So if any Bidet voter expresses concern over this just laugh in their face. It's like the *religious people for Bidet* (I forget their title) who are stunned he not only isn't anti-abortion but is looking at removing all the roadblocks to public funding.
Their pretending their "morals" are now offended because Bidet put a fig leaf over his machinations in order allow these people to vote how they wanted to do all along doesn't work. They made the choice because they chose to, the only person they are fooling in pretending "they didn't know" is maybe themselves. Maybe by reconciling that they can discover if not happiness, less self loathing which they likely also displace onto others.

44 "Liberal", as a U.S. political term, is rather anachronistic.  It died out during Clinton's presidency.  In the 80's I considered myself a Liberal of the Henry "Scoop" Jackson variety (and, interestingly, aligned with Caesar Chavez).  The Liberals pretty much won the public "conversation" (a terrible word in this context).  What exists today is not "Liberal".  Frankly, aside from some specific policy disagreements, who amongst the Horde would not be happy to roll things back to 1985?

46 As far as the timeline goes, I postulate that Kennedyism had become a fascist skin suit by the late 70s, the two left wing factions spent most of the 80s staring each other down, and then in the 90s Clinton united them by reframing their various ideological differences in terms of state power, who has it and who doesn't.  The 2000s and early 2010s were all about consolidating power in the institutions, after which they took the mask off knowing that there weren't any major players left on the field willing to push back in a 'polite' way.

What comes next is probably widespread but decentralized and low-key resistance activities--think WWII occupied factory workers failing to meet their quotas--coupled with a messy leftist civil war as the various sub-sects discover that in a totalitarian system only one of them gets to put the jackboot on everyone else's face.

60 Modern liberalism is to classical liberalism what neoconservatism is to patriotism, or what was once called politically normal. The problem is that neos hate nationalism and Christianity, and attacked from a variety of angles. In Israel, of course, neos like Rubin and Shapiro demand every measure up to ethnic cleansing to preserve their actual nation, possibly because they understand how deadly an ICLU would be to their country.
I don't really care if people agree or not. Big Tech is following the direction of the New York bankers, and American cowardice on this issue will cost millions of people everything they have. Which, as Weimar could tell you, is the most fertile ground for nationalist dictatorship.

I wonder, once the leftists get their dream of "True equity" how many of those perceived to have more will still bust their ass to make things and provide those services that not everyone can do, like brain surgery, while so many others are comfortable just sitting on their ass eating Cheetos and certain they will be the next Youtube star.

But at least being left to die because state health care can't afford you any more will be equal...well, except for the powerful what are more equal and won't face that anyway.

65 You should read Fr. Seraphim Rose's description of liberalism in his work, On Nihilism, as he gets right to the heart of the issue.

"It is the supreme irony of the Liberal view that it is precisely when its deepest intent shall have been realized in the world, and all men shall have been "liberated" from the yoke of transcendent standards, when even the pretense of belief in the other world shall have vanished--it is precisely then that life as the Liberal knows or desires it shall have become impossible; for the "new man" that disbelief produces can only see in Liberalism itself the last of the illusions which Liberalism wished to dispel."

So-called classical liberalism is an empty cloud of rhetoric that conceals a belief in nothing, and as we see today it's completely powerless to mount a defense against the much more vital forces of hatred and destruction.

Pretty much the same here in Ohio. DeWinemom is positively gleeful whenever the incidence levels (supposedly) increase. I expect face diaper mandates in force here next year at this time. It's gone way beyond the absurd.

68 "a clear path to the 'I disagree with you and so you must be destroyed' that we have today"

good points, but when the hateful Karens go crazy and stomp their feet, they are not logically thinking "you disagree with my opinion" .. they are assuming their opinion is Absolute Truth, and disagreements are Evil and Murderous.  Most of the worst of them think like Bill Ayers ... our ideas are Supremely Correct and millions of those that hold to old Christian Patriot ideals may have to die to make room for our Higher Authority.

imo, most of them don't feel they are chilling free speech, or squashing dissent ... they are noble defenders of Truth, and we the deplorable troglodytes must be destroyed for poisonous thought that will kill their Utopian Society. ...

As with all their Orwellian thought, they have been brainwashed into being the very thing they accuse Liberty minded patriots of being.  They are unaware of their own primal screaming, and they don't become self aware and healed, they become stuck in their primal id state (of hate for the other).  imo this is "engineered" (in schools, Hollywood, etc.)

Once in his shop a workman wrought,
With languid head and listless thought,
When through the open window's space,
Behold, a camel thrust his face!
"My nose is cold," he meekly cried;
"Oh, let me warm it by thy side!"

Since no denial word was said,
In came the nose, in came the he ad:
As sure as sermon follows text,
The long and scraggly neck came next;
And then, as falls the threatening storm,
In leaped the whole ungainly form.

Aghast, the owner gazed around,
And the rude invader frowned,
Convinced, as closer still he pressed,
There was no room for such a guest;
Yet more astonished, heard him say,
"If thou art troubled, go away,
For in this place I choose to stay."

O, youthful hearts for gladness born,
Treat not this Arab lore with scorn!
To evil habits' earliest wile
Lend neither ear, no glance, nor smile.
Choke the dark fountain ere it flows,
Nor e'en admit the camel's nose.

78 68 You're giving them too much credit.

The question of Truth is irrelevant  to these people. None of their arguments are oriented toward defending Truth as a principle, or even defending their ideology as fundamentally true. They're just weapons to be used in order to seize power, which is closest thing they hold to a principle.

Them holding power = good; their enemies holding power = bad; and anything standing between them and power needs to be destroyed. This is ultimately what they mean by "equity," whether they understand it or not.

The very fact that this freakish garbage has *any* place in society, much less in "education", much less as a real factor in "education", suggests it's already a society of dumbed-down, hollowed out, empty people who are not in any meaningful sense "citizens", and certainly nothing resembling Americans in terms of values and mindset.

The national non-reaction to last year's national racist-totalitarian street festival, on top of the non-reaction to the science-free suspension of virtually all liberty and common sense, imply this is it, this is what's left of the country.  None of this absurd and vile racist power-mongering and hate would have any purchase whatsoever in the America of just a few years ago.

The Left/Prog/Lib/Dem denies that there IS such a thing as human nature. Curious, because in 5,000 or so years of recorded history, and 10,000 or so years of historical record, the *sole* constant *has* been human nature. Civilizations, societies, political structures, have risen/fallen, but the one constant remains. They are just certain that given control, they can change that.

99 Duke, beyond infuriating, it should leave you agog at the complete collapse of critical thinking and common sense.

There have been many decades of specific research, including randomized controlled trials (RCTs, the gold standard), and a century of observational data, showing that masks are not effective in limiting transmission of viruses.  Including large RCTs done *in this context, with this virus as the focus* (Denmark) - results do not vary.  True respirators (not what almost any one is wearing, nor are they practically usable) provide *some* benefit, in a clinical context, according to research - nothing else makes any difference.

And note - even true respirators provide ONLY benefit to the wearer, not to others (kind of obvious if one understands how the work).

If one understands the actual science and history, it makes it impossible to retain any respect for the society in general - and that's on top of many other reasons to lose any such respect.  We're in an ignorant, pathetic, medieval, pre-scientific society, with collapsed institutions.

And that's *on top* of the crude totalitarian racism that is the subject of the post.

back when things were more normal, I would gauge someone's views on freedoms by how they responded to freedoms they did not care much about.   For example, many would say "I don't care about smoker's rights because I don't smoke and don't like smoke."  This was a common statement in conservative circles. I'm allergic to cigarette smoke. Not the tobacco, which is just leaves burning, but the chlorine processing they do to the paper it's rolled in. Not a severe allergy, just sneezing, eyes tear up, that sort of thing. Having mild allergies to the chemical reactions that come from chlorine processing of different materials is actually pretty common. Also, some leather tanning that involves the same will drive me crazy. But I can be around most cigars all day and not a single problem.

Anyway, even with all of that, I have always been against all the rules and prohibitions on smoking. Because I always knew that freedom is fungible. If it's removed somewhere then all our other freedoms are lesser for it. If I agree to have freedoms taken away it needs to be life or death. Like, no I shouldn't be allowed to go around stabbing people, I should be deprived of the freedom to do that. But much of our restrictions do not rise anywhere near that level.

I remember when all this "history month" started a long time ago. The argument back then was that "Every month is White history month".  This wasn't said with much malice, people were making a point why Black history month, and to a lesser extent, Women's history month, were a good thing.  It was a different and fleeting time when things were not so hateful and rigid.

The issue I have is nothing could be further from the truth today. I doubt most study history during Black History Month, or Women's History Month.  And for sure there is no chance that every other month is White History month. The reality is people writ large give a crap about history and they are not being taught history. It should be American History every month and some world history thrown in for context. But nothing could be further from our reality.

And I never felt this way before. Yes I felt irritated and that people were naive during the reign of O, but I didn't hate them or feel like they hated me. Yes they wanted to "lecture" and I could shut that off.  Now, I really want nothing to do with them at all and I seem them as malignant. The people and groups that are trying to point the finger at others are the worst for me.

Good grief, everything is so ugly now. My wife says she doesn't understand what that means, and I have no way of explaining it. She's been texting with her friends and they're all nearly vaccinated, so the idea of getting together is being hatched. I gotta say that is going to be so unbelievably unbearable that I might have to refuse. I have nothing in common with these people and I know they want me dead, so it's a crappy situation. There was a type of architecture that was called "brutalist". Grand and complex, and new, in defiance of norms, and soul-crushingly ugly.

The architecture of our society, our relations to one another, the nature of public discourse, the endless instructions and commands, all of it has become brutalist. The reshaping and corrupting influences that the left was once satisfied to suffer upon our poor buildings, they are now applying to the very geometry of our lives.

Yeah, I kinda feel this way too. However I try to remember that most people don't know jackshit about history or politics.
In fact, I had a theory I discussed with a family member of mine and I think that a lot of the LIVs, are afraid of saying "I don't know" or "I'm not sure" when it comes to current events or topics. They want to be "informed" so they watch the news and are now "informed" and don't have to worry about looking stupid.

This does not make them less dangerous, it gives them a sense of unwarranted confidence.

The people I am detesting are the ones who should know better, but do absolutely know that pointing a finger at someone and calling them racists will jeopardize them and do it with the goal of removing all taint from themselves, the ones wagging their fingers. It's a very scary time in this country.

And BTW, what kind of 45 carbine did you get?  I think there's only one or two brands, but I forget the names.  Very good choice for general purpose home defense, I think.  PCCs are easy to use effectively.

And what if any is the buzz on how the trial verdict will affect your situation, I mean are "festivities" anticipated, either way?

The dearth of  education on the founding, nay, of basic Civics in this country is gobsmacking.
I infer that he thinks the political branches take an oath to defend the Supreme Court rather than the Constitution.

could you give some more context here?  I am not up for a huge debate at this juncture lol. But I thought that is exactly what the Supreme Court is supposed to do.  The Legislator makes the laws, the Executive runs the federal gov and pushes the laws they want, and the SC decides if they are Constitutional. Sure everyone should be looking towards the Constitution whenever they act, no doubt there.

155 Regarding the mask debate - in all those RCTs done previously, while its true they show very little benefit to the general use of masks, the results are seemingly always expressed as some percentage. Like cloth masks only provide x% possible benefit. The propagandists program that into their models and it gets amplified by population numbers and other factors that then suggest that xxxx number of people will die unless they wear a mask. When they talk science, they really mean their models, which are in no way science.

@rhomboid, I'm usually more pessimistic than you are, but I'm a lot less concerned over the long term. I think we're in pre-Thatcher Britain, or Jimmy Carter on steroids. I think we can come out of this with more post-racial American unity than anyone would have thought possible. The idiocy is showing itself plainly to be idiocy, and the incompetence of these people is going to drive them out of power. (Plus the infighting, but mostly the incompetence.) The next few years will be ugly, but we will get through it.
