FRIDAY!

A U.S. District Court dismissed the lawsuit against the NYPD for alleged surveillance of Muslims as part of its anti-terrorism activities. The judge found that the plaintiffs lacked standing, since their claimed injuries appears traceable to the AP's decision to disclose the secret program rather than the program itself. The judge also found that even if the plaintiffs had standing, they could not prevail since it appeared that the NYPD targeted individuals on account of terrorism prevention, not on account of their religion. Lawgeeks, the short decision is here (PDF).

Even the New York Times is reporting that Obamacare is causing employers to cut part-time jobs, something the Obama administration insists is merely anecdotal. Of course, it took job cuts among the public sector to get the Times to pay attention to the issue, but at least the paper is covering it.

Ya'll have a good weekend.

7 Former NASA scientist Dr. Roy Spencer is sick of being labeled a global warming ‘denier’ by politicians and environmentalists. So sick of it, in fact, that he’s going to start calling detractors “global warming Nazis” until he is no longer called a “denier.”

“Yeah, somebody pushed my button,” Spencer wrote on his blog. “When politicians and scientists started calling people like me ‘deniers’, they crossed the line.”

“They indirectly equate (1) the skeptics’ view that global warming is not necessarily all manmade nor a serious problem, with (2) the denial that the Nazi’s extermination of millions of Jews ever happened,” Spencer added.

23 Obama's approval is back up in the Gallup poll. I guess some idiots do determine who they vote for based on late night show appearances. Low and no information voters are going to be the death of this republic. Too many people with no skin in the game and not a thought a serious in their heads and we wonder why so many clowns get elected to office. Until we repair the damage to our education system and the media dominated by political operatives with bylines I don't see this being remedied outside of overwhelming turnout by the informed part of the population.

38 Last night, I managed to find out how many lurking incipient issues had been present all along in This Carefree Lifestyle, as both the local ISP and what I've come to call the "wireless rooter" reacted badly to a thunderstorm, tidal charts and the cusp of Aquarius. But mostly the ISP trying to provide me, remotely, with their telephone service, which in my case I have not got.

I should just print out my rant on this (because I'd never be able to access the file when I need it). TV was not reliable when I was growing up. When it went screwy, you'd just turn on the radio. Et cetera. Now, most people have their musical entertainment, personal communications, news, banking and everything else (refrigerator?) through a vulnerable and none-too-stable link, for which We As A Nation pay, on a monthly basis, what I consider Megabucks.

How did we come to this turn? I put it down to glamour and vapor-headedness. I'm old, so I still have, like, hard-copy books and a mailbox. And a copper-hard-wired telephone. None of this will last much longer. Soon (soon!) there will be no alternative to the on-again, off-again pixillated realm of "Oh well, computer problems, we'll try again later." I don't want my surgeon saying that.

It's the m%$-f*@ing National Excuse, is what it is, now well into its second generation. For some reason, we do not demand better. If a salesman had come into my office, displaying the whole pa-NOPP-a-ly of moderan IntraW3bz life, and had that sumbitch go down in flames during the demo, he and his goods would have to hope the room had those little-bitty Brutalist slit windows, so's he and it wouldn't fit through. Then again, I had an office. You can't throw a laptop, or a lap-topper, out of a cubicle.

58 Stringer Davis, Do you have Comcast? Comcast was hacked two + weeks ago & I found out here. I didnÂ’t change my password like I should have. I have a Mac & they are supposed to be virus free. A week ago Sunday I noticed my emails werenÂ’t addressed to Carol, they we addressed to some strange John. Even old emails were. I looked at contact card that iPhone made & it made a new one for me with John Whatever as last name & my email address. I deleted contact & got downloaded Trend Micro for Macs. Last Thursday at work got a few emails that I supposedly sent returned. I didnÂ’t send any of those. After the third one came in I forwarded to our IT person. She was out but told me to do Malware scan. I did a full one and it was fine. Work computers do a short Symantec scan every might. Last Friday when I went on internet it said I had virus. I did full Symantec virus scan & it found something. Then I did Malware scan. I got virus from this Mac, via Comcast. It spoofed my email & it sent an email to all my contacts including my work computer. Comcast never notified me that they had been hacked!

64 New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s official vehicles were spotted breaking several traffic laws on Thursday, just two days after he laid out a sweeping traffic safety plan that included harsh restrictions on reckless drivers. De Blasio was in the front passenger seat of the lead SUV of a two-vehicle caravan that was captured on video speeding, running through a pair of stop signs and not signaling when changing lanes. The footage, which aired on WCBS-TV, was taken as de Blasio returned to City Hall after a news conference in Queens. The mayor’s press office deferred to the police department for particulars of the incident because a member of the NYPD was behind the wheel of de Blasio’s SUV. But de Blasio’s press secretary said that “public safety is everyone’s responsibility.” Liberals: The laws are for Thee, not for Me

Posted by: BlueFalcon in Boston at February 21, 2014 07:12 AM Believe it or not, our education system is not quite as liberally slanted as people want to believe. Members of the NEA (a lobbying group and not a union despite how it is portrayed) self-identify as one-third each conservative, independent, and liberal. The leadership of the organization is, in fact, very liberal which skews the public view. Also, most conservative teachers don't have any interest in joining the NEA. We on the right blame thew schools because we see outrageous examples of behavior we deem to be liberal indoctrination. Lefties see examples of what they consider to be conservative indoctrination. Look at all the battles through the years over the teaching of creationism. We have discussed confirmation bias many times here at the HQ. This is one example of it. The problems begin at home. We have reached a point where kids are being taught in the homes that there is no real need for education because you can just go on the dole. They also learn from many of our leaders that we will pay for you to go to college no matter how hard you work in school because college is a new right. We as a society have decided that a measure of success s a college degree. A a result, we subsidize substandard performance. As long as those things go on, there will be LIVs.

91 Surprisingly good read about Mike Lee. He is quoted a lot in this article, and, it's really worth hearing him out. He's not interested in running for President, which he says is liberating, and which allows him to focus in the Senate on real change. http://tinyurl.com/mwgwcbf snippet “We knew that we would end up here, but, you know, it has taken us some time to move from our 'Boston moment' to our 'Philadelphia moment.' " With the Boston-to-Philadelphia Image, Lee hearkens back to his victory speech on election night in 2010, when he said the conservative activists who took their name from the American Revolution needed to imitate their predecessors by offering a governing vision in the spirit of the Constitutional Convention of 1787. He regards that process as "the natural course that the conservative movement takes." The first Philadelphia moment led to the ratification of the Constitution in 1789 and George Washington's election as president. Given his credibility with the base, but absence of presidential ambition, Lee occupies a unique position in the Senate, one that might allow him to to harness the energy of the Tea Party toward an effective push for smaller government, while avoiding the policy mistakes of contemporary Democrats and big-spending George W. Bush-era Republicans. If no one views him as a rival, presidential candidates, for instance, can collaborate with him without fearing that doing so will undermine their own ambitions.

People see these warnings about all the viruses on their computer and actually pay to get the problem giving them the alerts removed without realizing it. Windows computers have been targeted because of the dominant market share they hold. Thing of it as marketing. If you had a product you wanted to sell and make lots of money off of, would you want to sell it as Walmart (Windows PCs) or your local dry goods store (Macs)?

I bought a sweatshirt jacket from Eddie Bauer a few months ago. They are very linty & must be washed before wearing or they leave tiny pieces of lint or fabric everywhere. I washed it and a few days later was going to put it on. The zipper fell off. I called EB & they were going to email me return label. After two weeks I called again. They said it had been sent. It was not on Comcast website as spam. I finally had them send it to work email. Some things are in spam & I can rescue, others go somewhere but not to me. Years ago I subscribed to Move On emails & I got those! They claimed they are blocking mass emails because they look like spam. ItÂ’s conservative emails that they block the most. NRO isnÂ’t that conservative now but I can rescue some from spam on Comcast website.

We got one for the house after my exwife went nuts and assaulted my wife, then called the police and lied about it, and got a peace order on my wife. My wife took video of the stoplight in question - there is no red arrow on the signal. Judge told her she won the case. Did the cop get sanctioned or even admonished for lying? It is to laugh. But without that video, the judge would have taken the lying cop's word for it.

Rupert's editorial room has been given its marching orders to attack Ted Cruz.  They had a general editorial about him earlier that received three responses in the dead tree yesterday, all in support of Cruz.  As I've written before, I've had a subscription since the late 70s and I'm letting it lapse because there's never been such a disconnect between its editorial page and me on certain topics.  Too bad because they were a great source of conservative ideas previously.

150 What's chances, Vic is on a jury of some nameless blogger who they want to out?

@70 I used to define RINO as anybody talking about "our education system." The old go-to book on this is "The Twelve Year Sentence," but there are plenty of other sources of where mass compulsory education came from. It's inevitably commie. Teachers who think they're "conservative" are usually conservative blue-collar dems, and the other word for that is "fascist." I had a lot of those. They were wallowing in the sweet-sweet Federal Titles money, but did not like my hair.

Like the honest accountant at the IRS, or the inspired self-motivator at the Post Office -- yes, you can credit individual teachers for their one-on-one, but even they must admit they work in a system that cants inevitably leftward.

Hmpf. Guy wats to work at building cars. Can no longer do that at Joe's Car Company in Joeville. So he goes to work for Big 3 Motors, has to carry a UAW card, and we'all (plural of "ya'll") have him fitted for the lynch noose. But a teacher! Teachers are special! If they still say the Pledge of Allegiance we say they have Good Intentions.

Teachers taking the pay and benefits hit of teaching in a private or parochial school, or tutoring, well that's like the guy who starts New Joe Motors in his garage. More power to 'em. But 99% on are the Queen's Farthing, and know it.

I think it comes down to whether a Republican politician is already bought or not.  Some haven't  been, and won't sell themselves to the highest bidder.  I hope that is the case with Lee.

Others,  we already know.  It's the answer to all sorts of questions, such as "why are they pushing amnesty so hard?"

I've reached the point where I believe any politician who has already sold his soul to the money men is a lost cause.  Primary them, and if you  get a Christine  O'Donnell as a result, so be it.

Ain't that the truth.

I had driven someone to traffic court and was sitting in the gallery when a fellow came up to talk about his ticket.  What grabbed my attention was this  (paraphrased) :

Right when the guy got up to the podium, the judge said "I must inform you that I am representing this officer in court on an unrelated civil matter, and I assure you it will not impact my impartiality in adjudicating this matter, but I am required to allow you to ask for a change in venue."

And he had to say it for each of the following 15 or so people who came up.  I'd say about half asked for a different judge.  Of course that meant they had to come back another day.

It's a racket.

Everyone was just supposed to act like sheep and accept it. It is the law and fait accompli. The website imbroglio slowed it down and gave people time to see what they were doing. Judges sit up there, waiting for  the day's  meat to be delivered, which it eventually is.  Shackled and dressed in orange.

They divide up the carcass, then leave the bones for the probation officers, who  are sitting on the sides, waiting, like circling vultures.

181 @163 - But that just isn't the case - iOS and the Mac OS are very different, and look different. Apple recognizes that desktop and mobile OSes are different animals with different needs. MS tried to do one OS to rule them all, but they missed the point - mobile devices you want full screen and single focus. Desktop you want apps in, well, windows, so you can really multitask. The "desktop" in Win8 is hacktastic, the dialogs look like they were pulled up from Win 3.11. It is functional, but as I noted, it is a step back from Win 7. With 8.1, they readded the "Start" button, but gave it the exact opposite behavior that it used to have (right click and left click actions are reversed) - if you are going to bring back something because consumers demanded it, why stick a thumb in their eye by making it work differently than they wanted? Just stupid. I hope the new guy fixes it.

In exchange, the legislature will shepherd through a gun-owner championed bill that would define what are known in the gun world as "reasonable deviations" to the law governing transport of a firearm. Currently a gun owner may only transport an unloaded, stored weapon straight to the destination, be it on a hunting trip or to a gun range. Under the law, a gun owner may detour from the route only for deviations that are "reasonable." But next week lawmakers will introduce a bill that would define those deviations as small detours to allow for emergencies, picking up another range goer or hunter or for short side trip like gas station stops and bathroom breaks.

Most digital TV signals are on UHF channels, and the higher frequencies are sensitive to line of site restrictions and are degraded more easily by weather conditions.

Plus, digital signals don't degrade gracefully like analog signals,  It's clear or trashed, nothing in-between.

212 A few weeks before Season 2 of “House of Cards” debuted online, the show’s production company sent Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley a letter with this warning: Give us millions more dollars in tax credits, or we will “break down our stage, sets and offices and set up in another state.”

A similar letter went to the speaker of the House of Delegates, Michael E. Busch (D-Anne Arundel), whose wife, Cynthia, briefly appeared in an episode of the Netflix series about an unscrupulous politician — played by Kevin Spacey — who manipulates, threatens and kills to achieve revenge and power.

In recent years, Maryland has spent more than $40 million to reward movie and television production companies that choose to film in the state, and most of that largesse has gone to “House of Cards.”

“This just keeps getting bigger and bigger” Del. Eric G. Luedtke (D-Montgomery), who until now has supported film tax credits, said at a hearing on the issue last Friday. “And my question is: When does it stop?”

213 @202 - NGU, I thought you were trying to say that MS was trying to be like Apple, but they really aren't. Apple uses different interfaces for different form factors, MS is trying to force the same one for all form factors. I think the reason why they did that is because Windows has been rejected a mobile OS because it was too heavy and desktop oriented, so they decided, okay, we will make it acceptable on mobile by making it the same as desktop. But now people are rejecting it on desktop, too.

The digital broadcasts are more dependent on line of sight for good reception. In my location reception is pretty hopeless due to the amount of topology between here and Mt. Wilson, where a lot of the transmitters live. Not that it was much better with analog. The place I grew up, Thousand Oaks, is just north of LA County and was a very early recipient of cable TV service because the reception was so dire. It's no coincidence the Colorado was the birthplace of cable TV.

There are a few sites that will tell you what stations you should be able to receive based on your address.

259 @243 - not even that. Judges have absolute power in their court rooms. They can do whatever they want. Again, cost free. I have seen judges say "this is what the law says but I am going to do this.." Now, you can appeal what a judge does. But it will take time and money which if you win, you won't get back. And a judge having something overturned is again a cost free action. Judges can rule against you simply because they don't like you. (Honestly, I think that is how most cases are decided, Lawyers spend their time making the other party distasteful, not presenting legal arguments or getting at the truth. If you watched the Zimmerman trial you know exactly what I mean.) And I bet there are judges who are prejudiced one way or another about the people who come before them.

263 Two leading Republicans on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence say that Michael Morell, former deputy director and twice acting director of the Central Intelligence Agency, provided an account of his role on Benghazi that was often highly misleading and at times deliberately false.

“I went back and reviewed some of his testimony the other day and he’s gotten himself in a real box,” says Senator Saxby Chambliss, the highest-ranking Republican on the committee. “It’s really strange. I’ve always thought Mike was a straight-up guy, gave us good briefings—factual, straightforward. I mean, this has really been strange the last few weeks—all this now being uncovered.”

At issue is the central role Morell played in producing the Obama administrationÂ’s flawed talking points about the fatal attacks on U.S. facilities in Benghazi, Libya, on September 11, 2012, and the misleading answers he provided to lawmakers who investigated them.

If the power level is below the threshold, your receiver fails to lock to the signal, but once above the threshold the receiver does lock and the marginal picture quality doesn't change much for further increases in power level.

272 I don't really know that she can get her large posterior under control. I get the impression that she exercises a lot. She may just be built that way and while she could firm it up it won't disappear or get much smaller. She may just have a largish body type I find it more aggravating (well it's not aggravting to me. It's just tedious) is that she lectures about healthy eating and then she and the President spend massive amounts of money on food that is not healthy. I don't think Michelle has really good self esteem despite evidences to the contrary so she deals with that with a need to control people and with a sense of entitlement. She-as we all do IMO-stands in need of prayer.

274 Morning, all!

So I haven't read the comments, but I'm sure y'all have already talked about Billy boy De Blasio's  hypocritical    traffic violations?

CBS 2 Exclusive: De BlasioÂ’s Caravan Caught Speeding, Violating Traffic Laws
Embarrassment Comes Just Days After Mayor Announced New Traffic Safety Initiative

CBS NY:  http://tiny.cc/axwmbx

"NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Just days after Mayor Bill de Blasio announced an aggressive plan to prevent traffic deaths, CBS 2 cameras caught the driver of a car carrying the mayor violating a number of traffic laws.

But the NYPD responded Thursday evening that the mayorÂ’s caravan, which is operated by police, sometimes has to use special driving techniques for protective reasons.

As CBS 2′s Marcia Kramer reported Thursday, the mayorÂ’s two-car caravan was seen speeding, blowing through stop signs, and violating other traffic laws. Kramer reported that if the driver of the lead car, which carried the mayor in its passenger seat, had been cited, he would have racked up enough points to get his license suspended.

When the mayor announced his 62-point safe streets initiative, which includes lowering the speed limit to 25 mph, he said, “We want the public to know that we are holding ourselves to this standard.”

But Kramer reported the mayor failed to practice what he preached Thursday..."

280 When the LEO pulls you over, you are at his mercy. This is absolutely true. Now think about the implications. Again, I used to think follow Robocop's advice - "stay out of trouble." But as I said, doesn't matter. My wife got pulled over for something she did not do - something she could not have done. So, the cop pulled her over, and now she is at his mercy. At that point, any other thing might have happened that would result in her incarceration. Because she was, as you say at his mercy. Some punk with a gun and an associates degree gets to rule over me just because? Yeah, that's how it is.

I kept hearing about how my cell provider- AllTel- was merging with AT&T. Didn't give it a thought until I got a letter from AT&T a few days ago telling me I'd need to get another cell phone and "plan...."

Arrgh! I hate stuff like that. Despise doing it.

345 Posted by: Carol at February 21, 2014 09:22 AM (z4WKX) See I don't mind win 8 all that much. I'm not sure I needed to upgrade (but at the time we were trying to solve some networking problems that had been fixed by some of the changes in win 8.) Dunno, I own a surface and a windows phone though, so may I'm just used to the OS style.

347 347?
Carol?

While I've read horror stories about Comcast on the web, the local service is very good- far better than AT&T's DSL was.

When we had DSL it was dead half the time and even managed to kill the landline service a few times.

Comcast's "basic internet?" Always on, and the few times we had problems "a guy in a service truck" showed up the same day and fixed them.

348 The same way her dog-eating crackhead partner gets to unilaterally waive portions of Obastardcare he deems bad - no one has the balls to stand up and tell Aunt Esther to STFD and STFU. I suggest Rush Limbaugh since he obviously lives in TFGs head! I have to go. I hope everyone has a nice day. MPPPP, itÂ’s going to be 49 degrees here in MA today! I hope itÂ’s the last of the cold. IÂ’ll read here later when I have my late lunch!
