A Johns Hopkins University student armed with a samurai sword killed a suspected burglar in a garage behind his off-campus home early Tuesday, hours after someone broke in and stole electronics.

Some shocked neighbors said they heard bloodcurdling screams in an area just blocks from the university.....

Around 1:20 a.m., the student heard noises behind the home and noticed a door to the garage was open, Guglielmi said. He grabbed the sword and confronted the intruder, who was crouching beneath a counter.

The student asked the suspect what he was doing and threatened to call police.

"When he said that, the suspect lunged at him, kind of forced the kid against the wall, and he struck him with the sword," Guglielmi said.

The intruder's left hand was nearly severed — Guglielmi described it as "hanging on by a thread" — and the man suffered a severe cut to the upper body. The 49-year-old suspect, whom police described as a habitual offender, died at the scene.

A lot of people keep a baseball bat under the bed for this situation.

It does make you think, though. Sure, a baseball bat is a decent weapon.

But basically a sword is a baseball bat with a sharp edge.

And a home-owner defending himself with a baseball bat is sooo cliched, so obvious, so expected.

Now imagine you're a thief, and a guy's coming coming at you with a sword.

The simple fact he's carrying a sword tells you 1, he means business, 2, he's probably going to kill you and not just give you a concussion, 3, he's probably insane in the first place, crazier than you, even, and more tweaked up on meth to boot, and 4, seriously, he means business, he's been masturbating about this very moment since he got his first Magic: The Gathering deck ten years ago and he'll be damned if he lets you out of here without "closing the deal," as they say.

So, a sword, I think.

With a gun for back-up.

Sword Control:

Real swords with a sharp edge are illegal in every state that I know of (no kidding, check your laws).

Sword Control doesn't appear to be working any better than gun control.

A word about Sue Lowden: I'm told -- and I don't really know this -- that she's a good candidate and has been working hard to build the GOP in Nevada. She's the Nevada GOP chair, a former broadcaster, and former beauty pageant winner. I know that last thing is kinda lame, but she's kind of a dish. Goofy Link: For some reason the link is getting screwy when accessed from my site. Try this Google search and hit the second link if my link won't work.

All right, that's not really a qualification either, but who are we kidding. Looks are important. Not sure what her politics are, but according to that article (admittedly an air-kiss to her), she's a conservative.

I say this because Hugh Hewitt has backed Danny Tarkanian, and he's the one getting the most blogosphere mentions.

I'm not knocking Tarkanian at all. I'm sure I'd be fine with him. I'm just saying Sue Lowden is also a possible candidate, and the blogosphere shouldn't think that Tarkanian (son of famous towel-biter Jerry Tarkanian, of course) is the only challenger.

In other words, Tarkanian shouldn't win the blogosphere primary by default.

I don't have a preference for either one of them, so long as whoever we nominate beats Dingy Harry.

As I have said quite a few times we are playing out the 2006 argument over Iraq again regarding Afghanistan. The usual suspects muster the same arguments about lost causes, lack of exit strategies etc. and see the same solution they proposed in 2006. "RUN, you're on MLK, RUN!" (reference anyone?).

2002, you had warned that such an endeavor would yield 'a U.S.
occupation of undetermined length, at undetermined cost, and with
unintended consequences.' You pointed out the dangers of fighting such
a war 'without a clear rationale and without strong international
support.' As scholars of international relations and U.S. foreign
policy, many of us issued similar warnings before the war,

the Coalition for a Realistic Foreign Policy, which formed in 2003 to coordinate opposition from realists, right and left, to the Iraq War.

Had we listened to this collection of self-named realists, we would have lost in Iraq and Iran and al Qaeda would be dominating the region. Somehow that is not a very appealing little piece of reality. Now the pointy-headed intellectuals think they know better than the warfighters and they are putting the screws to the President. To his credit Obama has made no major mistakes in either Iraq or Afghanistan, but the tests are going to come in the next few years, and he has a major insurgency on his left flank. Sen. Levin says we should just hire a bunch of Afghans, slap uniforms on them and call them an army. Then we can pull our troops out to a safe strategic zone (Okinawa maybe?). Harry Reid doesn't think there is much support in Congress for more troops, but this is the same guy who said if Petraeus told him the Surge was working he wouldn't believe him. I am trying to be hopeful that President Obama learned from his mistakes talking about Iraq and now understands that defeat to al Qaeda and the Taliban is simply not acceptable. It would embolden them and give them amazing recruiting capability. We need to beat them down and train up Afghan security forces to replace us. That takes time and will require more troops. Listen to the guys who were right last time Mr. President.

Funny thing about the signatories to that letter, only one military person and a ton of college professors. Hmmm, when was the last war Harvard won?

A memo prepared by Judson Jaffe, who works in the Treasury's Office of Environment and Energy, referenced President Obama's remarks on energy policy in his State of the Union Address and said, given the president's plan to auction emissions allowances, "a cap-and-trade program could generate federal receipts on the order of $100 to $200 billion annually."

These figures differ from other cost estimates for the legislation produced more recently by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy.

"These are candid, internal discussions of what they are telling each other and what they won't tell you," said Christopher C. Horner, a CEI senior fellow who filed the request.

"The words cap and trade were chosen for a reason, and that is to avoid a vote on tax," said Mr. Horner, who also is the author of the New York Times best-seller "The Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming." "This memo tells you it's a tax. Why else are they discussing hundreds of billions of revenue to be taken from the taxpayer?"

This leaked memo mus be immediately rebuked, people will don white robes and gallop across the countryside.

Obama's black. We can't have leaks proving he's lying. It's racist.

I condemn that piece of paper with its bigoted numbers for inciting racial hatred.

Corrected: I wrote the figures were "far higher" than the numbers Obama admits, but I see now there is no reference to what numbers Obama admits, precisely. So I can't say they're "far" higher.

Rep. Joe Wilson's outburst last week is drawing new recriminations from his colleagues, with a member of the Congressional Black Caucus suggesting that a failure to rebuke Wilson is tantamount to supporting the most blatant form of organized racism in American history.

In an obvious reference to the KKK, Rep. Hank Johnson, D-Ga., said Tuesday that people will put on "white hoods and ride through the countryside" if emerging racist attitudes, which he says were subtly supported by Wilson, are not rebuked. He said Wilson must be disciplined as an example.

The charged comments come as the House is preparing to take further action against the South Carolina Republican. House Democratic leaders decided to formally discipline him Tuesday afternoon for his jeer last week at President Obama during a joint session of Congress.

This is What I Don't Get: The Race-Baiting Media patrols the signs of citizens with no political power whatsoever for tiny hints of some subterranean racial agenda.

Supposedly, if they find a racist sign (like Obama=Hitler, you know, racist like that) the right is charged for the racism, since, I guess, we're supposed to take these people out to the woodshed before they can spread their Obama=Hitler racism.

Here we have friggin' Congressmen pushing this racist poison and not a figure in the Race-Baiting Media nor the Democratic Party tells him to cool it with the incitement.

Why is it that if Joe Nobody from Nowheresville carries a racist Obama=Joker sign, I'm personally on the hook for that, but if this rotten race pimp strikes a match and lights the racial gasoline, no one on the left is apparently required to say a peep at all to avoid culpability?

I heard some buzz about this. Someone says, it's is claimed, that she shot and killed her husband and got away with it. I can't wait for the context in which that little anecdote is told.

I am guessing it's something like "Oh don't worry about taxes, hey, I punched my husbands ticket and got away with it."

This Sunday, he'll be on every single chat-show, pretty much -- five -- because we all just can't get enough of him.

Now comes word he'll be on Letterman the Monday after.

I can't wait to see this movie he's promoting. It must be Transformers-awesome.

Though early reviews say it's all flash, no substance.
