A Proper Christmas Post
— Ace

When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.”

Diana Krall Covers Peanuts: Her version of "Christmas Time is Here, recommended by Sassypants.

By the way, I'm guessing that's one of those sites that lets you listen to a song once or twice before requiring you to purchase it, so if you're going to play it, better get ready to really listen. You probably will only have one bite at the apple.

Honoring the Troops: Pictures of the troops to John Lennon's "So This is Christmas/War is Over." An anti-war song, of course, but I'd have to think that most soldiers would agree with the general sentiment that, all else being equal, it would be better if war really was over.

5 Obama just cut a commercial where Drew Brees throws a pass to an actor playing "Jesus" and Obama intercepts it, then gets in "Jesus'" face, and shouts "How ya like me now?" He says the commercial is for the purpose of "promoting volunteerism."

Wouldn't it be funny if, say, a certain group of people took to the streets to demonstrate in opposition to this 'hate speech' directed at their religion?  If they protested by breaking windows and burning cars and beating people up.....

oh, wait,..........

14 I thought Charlie Brown was also somewhat suspect until I learned in his obit that Charles Schultz battled depression.  Now I love Charlie Brown.

15 It could be done today.  I could totally see House doing it just to throw people off.  But genuinely?  Maybe.  The extended scene in the SGU episode where they were flying into a star and a pretty sizable chunk of the crew gathered to recite the Lord's Prayer suggests it's possible.

On anything marketed to kids (aside from Veggietales), probably not.

17 You could probably do a modern-day retelling of the story with Mary as a knocked-up sex worker and Joseph as a gay friend who volunteers to be Jesus' dad after she makes the "wrong" choice to gestate him, and some judgemental Republicans refusing to let her give birth in the E.R. because Mary's pimp doesn't give her health insurance.

But yeah, not in anything for kids.

27 One Christmas wish I have is that celebrities, athletes, and politicians would stop telling us in PSA's to "give something back to the community"

This implies that everything you have was handed to you and nothing you have was earned by your own efforts.

Do recipients of government cash "give something back"?

No endzone dance? Oh, and don't forget to "give something back to the community" in addition to the income, property, sales, estate and other taxes and "fees" you give to the community before they ask for your spare cash

32

Do recipients of government cash "give something back"?

Only if they're getting 'unemployment' checks.

I've wondered for a long time why funemployment money is taxable, but all the other gimmes are not...perhaps because funemployment is to be considered temporary?

Posted by: Stillwater at December 25, 2009 01:10 PM (qUdDE)

33

If welfare bennies became taxable, the resultant wailing & gnashing of teeth would be *music* to my ears.

Posted by: Stillwater at December 25, 2009 01:13 PM (qUdDE)

34 "Give something back" is like "Pay it forward" it's all the feel-goodiness of Christianity minus Christ.  I just wish they'd acknowledge their religion and have their own holidays.

Posted by: Hallmark Inc at December 25, 2009 01:19 PM (zyyJm)

35 Pardon my ignorance, but what exactly does 'pay it forward' mean?

Posted by: Stillwater at December 25, 2009 01:26 PM (qUdDE)

36

Oh, BTW--

Merry Christmas M&M's.  God bless us, every one.

Posted by: Stillwater at December 25, 2009 01:31 PM (qUdDE)

37 "Pay it Forward" was a fluffy movie that was basically the Gospel story (be nice to everyone and inspire them to be nice to others, randomly, and the world is a better place) minus Christ's divinity (all about the effect in this world) and therefore ressurection (which makes the end painful to watch).  Basically this kid gets the idea to do good deeds for three random people (from his schoolteacher who hooks up with his mom) and tell them rather than thanking him to do three random good deeds for other people, and it being a Hollywood script, it magically snowballs, because everyone was just looking for an excuse to give away their Ferrari.  Of course he eventually tries it on someone who's not all happy feely and we get a reinactment of what would have happened to Ghandi if the Brits had been half as stubborn as they were with us.

It was a bad date, so I may be biased.  The phrase may have been around independantly of the movie, but I doubt it.

39 Merry Christmas fellow Morons, So, they pre-empted Charlie Brown this year for one of Obambi's speeches. Without looking, can anyone tell us what the speech was about. Anyone? I think this would make a good symbolic commercial against all liberals. Go ask Joe Public if they remember the speech that preempted Charlie Brown. Comedy gold would surely ensue. In fact, ask some democratic congresscritters and put that in the commercial.

Every generation says what the heck happened to the values we were raise with but these last 50 years of change seem particularly loathsome.  The 60's seemed the end of peace between decadence and morality.  I know the 50's were idealistic and not all measured up but we strived for normalcy and greatness.

My generation came of age in the sixties and seventies.  The Pill was invented, allowing women to have more indiscriminate sex without getting pregnant but it didn't work that way.  More and more out of wedlock births occured.  VD runs rampant.  Ladies burned their bras and stepped down off the pedestals. Congradulations, now men speak to a woman like they are Longshoremen and the ladies think nothing of it.  Families are breaking down.  The kid who sets down to dinner with his or her Mother, Father and blood siblings is far and away the exception.

Artist once strove to lofty achievements, glorifying God and showing men and women at the peak of perfection.  No longer.  Now pictures of crucifixes in urine are called art.  Hollywood, always a decadent place,  at least didn't try to insult the values of the country or audience.  It is clear they have an open distain for conservative philosophy.  They remind me of children stamping their feet at the authority of their parents, only now with the money and megaphone of media, they have very big feet with which to stomp.

Artists say they want to move people out of their comfort zone.  They have.  I truely no longer understand the left.  There is no rationality on their side, only anger and want.  I could simply rant and scream (and have) but not tonight.  I just set here perplexed and worry for my country.  If it will survive and will I be able to stand it.  I think this could be fodder for a thread some slow news day but an adult beverage would be helpful as it wouldn't be a fun night.

I am glad to have Ace and you M & M's.  As goofy as you act you are some of the saner people I know.  You make me laugh.
