After much discussion we decided it is unlikely that we will get another dog.  So we decided to share the dog items accumulated since 1987 from 7 dogs.  After surveying the pets of nieces and nephews we shipped off the good stuff.  We have enjoyed seeing photos of our kin's pups and cats enjoying the gifts.

43 My godkitteh Maceo ("Mace-ee-oh") was at the emergency vet overnight Th/Fr with an intestinal obstruction.  His mama (my ex-) and I brought him home last night.  I dropped them off to go park the car and when I got up to their apartment, he came over to me, rubbed his head against my hand and gave me several slow, kitteh blinks as I rubbed his head in return.  He's such a chill, cool dude and after all he's been through, he deserves happiness.  Modern vet medicine can do a lot, but as my ex said, he needed his mama's love.  There's no substitute for that, especially for animewls.  I really want to leave S.F. and find a semi-rural place in the hills where I can get to a small city when needed/desired, but otherwise have acres of woods, hills, and nearby mountains.

52 38 -- Our last dog died last fall. We are simply too old to commit to a puppy. All the Humane Society seems to have are big dogs. We'd go for a small used dog because we want to move out of this white elephant of a house into an apartment. The house was fine when all four kids and half their friends lived here, but those days are long gone. I really, really need to open a store on eBay and start getting rid of the stuff that nobody wants but is too good to pitch.
I have a year old cat, but I figure one of the kids would be happier to be stuck with a cat rather than a dog. I'm sure the cat will outlive me and possibly the XO.

Of course. He couldn't spell the long words like "Buccaneer" (as in "Rectal Buccaneer") or "Commando" (as in "Cornhole Commando") or "Swashbuckler" (as in "Sphincter Swashbuckler") or even "Privateer" (as in "Penile Privateer") so he stuck with something easy.

55 "Like Maceo Parker?" -- My ex got him from the SFSPCA (formerly known as "the pound") and he had been named Maceo, which as another Moron here pointed out was from a Jane's Addiction song "My Cat's Name is Maceo", which is a true story about Perry Farrell's cat Maceo, which he got from the pound and named after Maceo Parker.  So, yeah!

58 /52: I, too,  wanted an adult rescue pooch, but when confronted by the choice of pitbulls or a small dog "bonded" with a pitbull, I looked to breeders and got a 9 month old Russell. He's the most affectionate doggo ever and my whole family adores him. I'm 63 so we'll grow old together. I would have gladly taken one of the breeders "retirees", but she had none available.
Also the rescues had a big problem with my husband's age, so I was disqualified for most dogs...except of course, pitbulls.
It all worked out.

My husband would have been fine with a dogless life. I would not. He did not dissuade me so I pressed ahead and got this little sweet terrier. He couldn't be happier and old stories about wanting a terrier as a boy suddenly surfaced. Not a day goes by that he doesn't call Bogie "a sweet handsome boy" and pet him and play fetch. Another trick you can do with a cat that likes some wrasslin' is to hold a medium sized stuffed animal from the back and poke him with the front end, letting him work on that side keeping hands intact.

72 We put Poochie down yesterday. Ellens brother died Dec 22 and his wife couldn't keep her. On Christmas morning we drove down to LA, picked her up and drove back to NorCal She had a small lump on her belly which she scraped going in and out the cat door, It got infected and she started chewing on it as it got bigger and bigger The vet had some tests done and it came back cancer. She got weaker and weaker until she stopped eating last Monday. I held her as she started drifting off and told her to go run to her daddy. She thumped her tail once and licked my face then she was gone. Rest In Peace Poochie.

93 As the weather has moderated we've been (unsuccessfully) trying to get our cats back outside.  Today it was rainy, but not torrential downpours yet they took over my den and have lounged about all day.  We keep them out at night, unless it's going to be bitterly cold... even though there are two heated huts for them, on our covered porch.  Luxury.

Our cats are the epitome of sponges.   They lay about all day and then terrorize the property at night.

Problem with cats is, they love to be outside, and also they love to be comfortable. So you figure "I'll make a safe, comfortable, outdoor area."

Nope. Won't work. I speak from experience.

They go outside to satisfy their unslakable bloodlust in the wild, with the added frisson of danger they crave.

When they're in "comfort mode," only the best will do - The Indoors, with its bounty of couches and canned tuna and automatic heat.

A sad half-measure will disappoint the mighty housecat in two ways.

Mister Scott (Formerly GWS)

Milady and I are doing mostly all right for our 29(*2.3) years, so we might live another year or a couple of decades.

Ever since our good old Gimli dog left, years ago, we were four cats for a while, until the day I let four cats outside and only three came back, and we've been cruising comfortably with the remaining three since then. No health problems (for the cats, anyway) or costly anything, amen. Feed 'em, pet 'em, clean the catbox, stop Charlie from dragging his kills into the house. Simple and comfortable routines.

The thing about getting another dog is, in our close-to-thirty years back here on the ranch, after multiple dogs and we've-lost-count cats, almost all of them just showed up here, or were rescued abandoned on the road. All the dogs found us.

The last and bestest dog, Gimli, showed up as a just-past-puppy, and when I sent SonM to chase him off, the pup just laid down and rolled on his back; I knew immediately he was ours and SonM got to name him.

If the Lord of Critters sent us another dog, it would be such a wonderful thing… except for the we're getting old thing; and the vet bills; and the food and attention dogs need.

Meanwhile it's always fun to visit daughter and her husband's house, where their two dogs just go crazy like puppies when we visit. Like grandchildren: all the joys, none of the responsibilities except to spoil 'em.

So this is the new version of ampersand privilege?

98 I want to thank Mis Hum for Show casing Rebel the Dog last week!    He’s handling the Fame and Fortune pretty well!   But.....he’s demanding extra treats!!!   Thank You!

99 Fancy box you got there, Mindful.  Would be a shame if something happened to it.

101 very late in the thread, but I am considering a sheepskin for a dog bed for Bogie? Comfortable, but are they safe?
