— DrewM So, that's nice.
The U.S. Treasury said today it will inject another $3.8 billion into troubled lender GMAC, part of a deal that will boost the federal governmentÂ’s stake to 56% and attempt to staunch the companyÂ’s losses from bad mortgages. All of the money injected by the Treasury will essentially go to shoring up GMACÂ’s ResCap unit, the arm best known for ditech.com and other housing-boom related mortgage offers that crashed as housing prices withered over the past couple of years. GMAC said the move, along with a $3.3 billion write-down in mortgages at ResCap and Ally Bank, should allow it to explore a sale or other action for ResCap.
"By protecting the financial performance and strength of our core automotive finance operations, we expect to increase the pace at which we can fully repay the U.S. taxpayer,” said GMAC Chief Executive Officer Michael A. Carpenter.
The money comes on top of $12.5 billion that the U.S. Treasury had previously invested in GMAC to keep it afloat as the lender of choice for car buyers and dealers at General Motors and Chrysler.
The new 'loans' make the US Government the majority share holder in this zombie company.
GMAC will become the sixth company the U.S. has taken control of in the past two years.Public-private mortgage lenders Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, auto manufacturers General Motors and Chrysler and the largest commercial insurer in the U.S., American International Group.

GM is going crazy with deep discounts, aka "losing more money". So this is just a downpayment.
They know that they will have a permanent pipeline into our treasury, until some adult (ie, a fiscal conservative) turns off the tap.

GMAC is the primary lender to General Motors and Chrysler customers.
Oh... brilliant. When GM and Chrysler rebound from their issues with their new brilliant Government-led management plans they'll pull GMAC back as well and they'll all pay back the Government what they owe, plus huge interest and bonuses for being saved.
On that day I'll sell my car... because riding one of those flying pigs seems like it would be more ecologically friendly; and fun too. I think I'll call him Horace.

43 Can the Chinese cut us off completely (buying all our debt)? Aren't they locked in a vicious circle with us? That being asked, I hope they can at least cut back their purchases... but that will bring higher interest rates and inflation.
Unfortunately,(?) the Chinese are headed for their own little meltdown. They have been going fast a furious and have enough new, empty commercial office space that it will take 40 years to even fill it. As a result they are floating paper all over and that house of cards is about to implode...........

Very, very soon I suspect. The US ITC ruling today that went against the Chinese isn't going to sit well at all, and will very likely reignite a counter-dumping claim the Chinese made against US Steel earlier this year.
Todays ITC "victory" for US Steel/Unions may turn out to be Pyrrhic if the Chinese decided to shift business to Posco/Mechel/Mittal to fill any gaps in their domestic steel production...and why wouldn't they? Shipping heavy shit, like steel, to China from Korea, Russia, or India has to be cheaper than shipping it from the US.

2 -- Sadly, yes. My daughter just bought a Chevy truck. It was a private owner deal though; she didn't want to buy anything but Ford or Toyota because GMAC disgusts her. However, since Oct/Nov it's getting harder than hell to find decent, used, low mileage trucks around here; they get snapped up as soon as they hit the dealer's lots; all that's left is junk (and it's going for way over what it's really worth right now -- older heavy halfs even not so heavy halfs and 3/4's, the market is booming for those around here right now). This truck was the best deal she could get (and it is a very sweet deal -- I know the guy she bought off of and know the truck).
It sucks, but sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do. At least this is one of the more decent Chevies made.
There will be no O-stickers on it though.

Toyota had the best price, followed very closely by Ford. Almost identical options, similar quality, similar designs.
The GMC and Chevy equivalents were not as designed as well, and cost significantly more. It is absolutely crazy.

Bush never said yes to a bailout of GMAC. Though the Bush Administration did approve a late-December deal to allow GMAC to become a bank, even though it had to waive about a jillion rules to do so.
GMAC's auto finance business is actually not in bad shape. It's been dragged down the toilet by its subprime mortgage business, which was run by a bunch of morons. For some reason when the market turned in 2007 they decided to keep the subprime guys and canned all the execs that had run the successful prime mortgage business. Then those guys finally got canned and they brought in some nincompoop from Bear Stearns to run the mortgage business. Now that he has also proven an abject failure, they need some more of our money to give them time to close the damn thing down, which they should have done in 2007 when it was apparent they were going to lose their shirts on their subprime book.
I doubt they will be able to sell much of the mortgage business. Maybe the servicing group, which seems to still be making some money, and the Ditech brand may be worth a few bucks. But that's it. Another 5000 jobs will be kaput, too.

Slightly O/T from Newsbusters: Ronald ReaganÂ’s economic recovery program generated the greatest peacetime expansion in history. That is fact. To this day, the "news" media report it as a failure. ObamaÂ’s economic program thus far has been a disaster. That is fact. To this day, the "news" media "report" it as a "recovery." George Orwell would be proud.
My biggest question is for those (libs) who consider themselves "informed", why do they refuse to see this when it is right in front of their faces?

Pet abandoners are sickening. Frankly, if caught they should be forced (at gun point if need be) to man up and do the right thing - put the poor criter down by their own hand. Nothing like having to shoot your own pet to firm up one's grasp on reality.
Regarding the Chinese cutting us off, I'm sure we'd just monetize the debt. They government will push this until it collapses.
As for this GMAC bail out, I do wonder what it will bring. Nothing good, probably, and I certainly am no fan of the Obama economic "plan." But the worst effects will probably be long term, rather than near term. We worry about inflation because of the money printing, but inflation only happens when the money supply is adequate to drive up the demand for limited goods, thereby raising prices. At this stage the cash hoarding is preventing any of that from happening. We're practically begging folks to start spending, and the factories are way underutilized. A lot of the "wealth" that was destroyed in the crash was simply paper or theoretical, and filling up that hole with more paper doesn't seem to be having much ill effect. If the Fed can suck the money back up when things turn for the better (if they ever do) the problem of printing money may not be that bad.
Anyway, a possible up side of all this is that we royally fuck China and leave them high and dry with nothing to show for their "investment." I would love to see that. After all, it's their currency manipulation, export subsidies, and intellectual property piracy that are to blame for our trade deficit with them and much of the destruction of US manufacturing. They're the ones gaming the trade system. Fuck them. I can't wait for their government controlled economy to do what all centrally planned economies do - crash and burn.

I'm not sure I agree. Next time (if ever) we get somebody in with some intelligence and good sense we should make them aristocrats. (I'm not trusting the voting majority around this country any more.) Put them in charge, force them to educate their first born sons to be in charge of that office in perpetuity, and to spend their entire adult lives doing the job. If they fail to do a good job, kill them AND their offspring and start fresh.

You're assuming an absolute monarchy, which is not optimal. A constitutional monarchy is far more moderate - with clear and accepted limitations on monarchal power. Let's not forget that it was not the monarchy that made England what it is today - it was letting the Parliment take all the power. An Englishman was WAY WAY more free in the time of Queen Victoria, or King George III for that matter, than he is now. Or, for that matter, than WE are now. I'd rather be the subject of a moderately good king/emperor than the so-called "citizen" who is just as much a slave (moreso, really) to mob-rule.

Speaking of abandoning pets -- I don't know what it's like in other states, but we're having issues with people turning their horses lose. Abandoning them at auctions has been commonplace for about a year now, turning them loose in the state parks has been going on for the past 6-9 months; now they're just opening up the barn and letting them loose in the middle of the night. It's horrible -- some of the horses are obviously trash, but now we're seeing decent horses -- ones that aren't skin and bones, have been taken care of and are to all appearances decently trained.
It's not just tragic; it's damn dangerous -- think of those suckers getting out on a highway at night.
As for owning a Chevy -- as already stated, sometimes you have to roll the hard six; there just weren't any other vehicles of comparable quality on the lots (which is odd for this time of year around here)...and this guy gave her a sweet deal anyway. At least it wasn't putting money into the pockets of GM dealers.

GM sales for November 2009 vs. 2008 are down 1.8%.
The more telling GM sales figure is for CYTD 2009 vs CYTD 2008, down 31.8%.
Chrysler is worse: November down 25.5%, CYTD, down 38%
Circling the drain, they are.
Ford for November, up .1%, for the year, down 18.9% which isn't too bad. Only Subaru and Hyundai are up.

Yep. Usually because they NEED a savior. The Weimar Republic didn't fall because it was doing such a great job. The Italian fascists didn't take power from a stable, working government that had a good administration. Given the choice between rolling the dice on some ambitious dude with what might be some good ideas, and living with the consequences of permanent Liberal rule, I'll happily give the new guy a shot. Nothing could be very much worse than letting the Liberals take permanent control, except to let the muslims take over (death would be preferable).

254 -- Not anymore. The "liberals" got nearly all the processing plants for horses shut down in the U.S. When that happened (and it had to coincide with an economy that was weakening) the bottom fell out of the horse market. Plus a lot of stables got cracked down on at the same time -- "liberals" pushing new cruelty/neglect guidelines for horses; they are "pets" and not livestock (one person I know got reported and drug through the courts because she was charged with "making the animals drink and eat where they defecated/urinated and they didn't have any pet beds...wtf??? horses are not chihuahas; they live in freaking stalls -- anyway, totally wiped her out, had to sell everything; now the moonbats are trying to rehome her horses -- some of which they "donated" to a charitable cause: a freaking big cat rescue; these were nice healthy younger horses; now they are cat meat). Made the price of keeping them skyrocket with no return on the investment. And the penalties for not following many of the new statutes for keeping them was horrendous ($500 fine per animal, you have to pay for their care while they are impounded, at a usually much inflated rate). Lots of stables and farms just up and closed their doors.
But some politically well connected land developers made killings on the places;picked them up for well below market price -- so in that regard I hope those frakkers lose their shirts on that ground.

As for my daughter's new GM: one, it isn't new, and two, the old boy she got it from is a family friend. This was his personal truck, and he dabbles in street rods...it's been a bit...tinkered with (in a very good way).
None of us would touch a Chevy straight off production -- they're crap imho. But this one? She couldn't have found anything like this on any dealer's lot for the money he sold to her at. She could turn around and make money off it.
She would have preferred a Ford, but there are hardly any Ford dealers left down here (and the few there are I would never buy from).

That would be the property qualification. Got no way to support yourself? Guess what quality you don't have..

In fact, I'd bring back the 1950s. That's not to say women can't be captains of industry, but they damn well better learn the basics to life first.

Mercy! This kind of talk warms my heart to the point where my burning hate for the Liberals, while in no way diminished, is suppressed. To hear such positive things from a woman has me somewhat flummoxed. So, I must leave this thread, drink some Grey Goose, listen to Sabaton, and refocus my anger back into a hot ball of wrath. And then go see Sherlock Holmes (which I realize is sort of a non-sequiter but that's my evening plans).
I wish all fellow right thinking AoSHQ morons a good evening!

277 -- my problem (if you could consider it a problem) is that I've not come into much contact with most of the idiot women. All of my friends and family are pretty much of the same stripe: keep the government out of my hair, help keep my neighborhood safe and clean (no thugs, no bums, no terrorists) or allow me to protect my own, and make it so I can find a job that allows me to feed and care for my family; the rest I'll take care of myself, thank you.
Admittedly I can't for the life of me understand women (or men) who think differently.

(It's food, not Italian porn, you perverts.)
My BIL raised pigs (2) on his farm last year. I thought he was nuts. This year He raised one for me, for wiring his house. I put something big, w/a bone in the middle, in the crockpot. I added a big can of Dinty moore stew. Better than Lobster! His Prosciutto is to kill for!

289 -- speaking of dogs, that dog we got for my daughter is a really nice one...they've got a few hundred more looking for homes (sorry, I'm an enabler when it comes to prodding people into getting pets who need homes).
Anyway, he's a really nice dog -- it was a good pick on our part; she loves him. Heck, I like him (and the sucker's big and is one of the few that bark when strangers come around -- so it's almost like we had our Dobe back...win-win!).
As for my horses -- well, when society crumbles we'll have transportation! We've already taken to pulling them out to go to work in good weather -- really saves on the gas money.

My two dogs are shelter dogs.
I'm working on that. My husband and kids (but I repeat myself) will implode if we don't get a puppy, but I want to get a pup and also an older dog from a shelter. One look at the golden retrievers on the goldens' rescue web site and I have to get at least one. They say they've been getting more dogs lately.
Question for y'all with knowledge. Do you think it would be better to get the older dog first or the puppy?

Hey Gubbermint! Here's a clue- people who can't afford stuff can still not afford stuff, no matter how much of my money you throw at them! And another clue- dumping my money repeated into failing companies is not a sound investment strategy.
Hell, I've got a bailout strategy/ economic recovery plan. How about we pick the 100 most successful small to medium business in America- ones with a consistent track record of success, growth and innovation- and give them bailout money. Fuck it, if these idiots insist on handing out my cash against my will, at least put it somewhere where it creates jobs, revenues, growth and profits.
But nooooo... they give it to the crack heads with no job skills, no desire to work and a gazillion $$$ per day smack habit.

Unknown Jane, you'll be thriving when the government teat sucking libs are flailing around like fish on a dock. Good for you. I miss having a horse and living in the country. But I do live on a peaceful island with lots of wildlife. And our two little female house cats we adopted several years ago are a joy, and fill a void in our lives with the boy away. And D'oh Boy stocked us up on ammo when he worked at Bass Pro, so there's that. Heh.

He also thinks Prop 13 in CA, which keeps property taxes reasonable for old folk on fixed incomes, should be repealed because it takes money away from schools.
I heard that twice a day from the time it passed til I graduated high school. And yet, here I am...

294 -- they should meet up with these two buddies of mine who have been forced onto welfare; although the two of them have no desire to get within spitting distance of large cities anymore. Still, it could be real interesting.
I've noticed that (outside of some lazy bums) that most people who are gungho welfare have never had to live on it with little to no hope of getting off of it. Seriously, I've got two friends and know some more folks around here who hate it like the plague. They'd like to have their old jobs back and the welfare case workers out of their hair. Sadly, I think they are becoming a minority.

Yeh, I think getting the older dog first would be easier for me! I've been dragging my feet on getting a dog for YEARS, but I'm running out of excuses. Reasons, I mean reasons.
Posted by: Mama AJ at December 30, 2009 05:22 PM (Be4xl)
Rum -- heh, heh, it isn't so much the peeing and pooping; it's the fact that a horse is about 1000 lbs. and no Avatar like communing goes on. You either know how to handle them or you don't -- and not knowing how can cause you all sorts of grief. There used to be a horse farming days festival near here -- you could try your hand at using a horse drawn plow...it was fun to watch the birkenstock crowd give it a shot (would've been truly something if we'd used a really hard core pull team instead of the broke to death ones that will do it in their sleep). Ever seen a vegan in sandals trying to man a horse/mule drawn plow? LOL
Get the older dog first -- dogs have to establish a pack hierarchy, and usually it goes to the dog with the most senority. Get the older dog, train it up well and get it acclimated to your household; it'll help teach a pup the ropes.

Thanks for the advice, folks!

Hmm, maybe that will help with the stubborn 4 yr old human...
But be prepared if you go with the Golden Rescue organization, they are real demanding of who they will give a dog.
I noticed they don't want families with kids under 5! The stubborn little guy will be 5 soon enough, though.
They also need families with no pets to foster dogs who are sick or just need to gain weight. We'll see. They are two hours away in Dallas because there aren't any Golden Rescues here in S'port, so we'll see, we'll see.

OT - I'm still lol-ing at the Politico piece that claims Obama's taking the blame that Bush didn't for the underwear bomber. Yep, the Left never criticized Bush's actions on 9/11 or its aftermath and never tried to blame him.
History begins today - once again.

Come on, this isn't a trick question! What make/model do you call a clown car? That's what I call a Chevy HHR. Just wondered if it was the same. Mine was bought spring '08, and has a PALIN sticker on it. Still looks like a clown car though. Just a clown car with class.

It'd be nice to bring back some shame into society
If that were come to be, this blog would be shut down!
BTW...nobody mentioned how much better a dog is than any alarm system.
My boys are getting old enough to be resposnsible to maintain a dog. I will go with the old pound dog. Screw the exotic hierloom breed POS's.
From my childhood, I remember a love being returned from any animal. Excpt chicks!
Why do all my posts turn to shit at the end?

324 -- Ha! I already mentioned the usefulness of having a large dog (who really isn't all that scary, but for some reason people are scared of large dogs) who actually barks when people come up. Gotcha!
And now, now...what exactly is an "exotic heirloom" dog breed? All my dogs are working dogs, and the one we just got, while a pedigreed purebred and I suppose "exotic", would've suffered a mighty dicey fate if he hadn't gone into an adoption program. Dude, don't be a hater! (lol)

My dad gave me a BB gun, when I was 6. ("
I gave my son a Cricket .22 for X-mas. We went shooting X-mas morn. Boy did goood. Had to take him to the Dentist today for his checkup. The assistant asked what he got from Santa. "A .22 that shoots the eyes out of a Perp at 25 yards". I tried to tell her it was a Nerf gun! She didn't believe me, but didn't hurt him either!

They don't just take the clippers to them at home? (yeah, my friends do that -- with interesting results sometimes)
As for 4K dogs...only if they're really good at doing some real work (mind you, there are dogs out there that are like that -- but they usually don't get fancy haircuts). Our new hound didn't come close to that cost, doesn't need a fancy haircut...and made about that much on the track. Now that's more like it (yes, I'm seriously digging this dog...can you tell?).
That's my perfect come back when somebody's bragging on their high priced, spoiled rotten/does nothing pooch -- so, for that price does it do anything worthwhile?

329 -- I was giving you a hard time Hutch...kiss, kiss, wink.
I'd pay that price for a good, proven working dog -- like a narcotics or bomb sniffer, even a really good schutzhund III dog that was proven and of breedable quality...but those dogs have a bit more going for them than just looking cute.
