Der Spiegel: This Obama Fellow Is Quite The Wimp, Isn't He?
— DrewM

Ouch because it's true.

In Tokyo, the new center-left government even pulled out of its participation in a mission which saw the Japanese navy refueling US warships in the Indian Ocean as part of the Afghanistan campaign. In Beijing, Obama failed to achieve any important concessions whatsoever. There will be no binding commitments from China to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. A revaluation of the Chinese currency, which is kept artificially weak, has been postponed. Sanctions against Iran? Not a chance. Nuclear disarmament? Not an issue for the Chinese.

The White House did not even stand up for itself when it came to the question of human rights in China. The president, who had said only a few days earlier that freedom of expression is a universal right, was coerced into attending a joint press conference with Chinese President Hu Jintao, at which questions were forbidden. Former US President George W. Bush had always managed to avoid such press conferences.

...Obama's new foreign policy has also been relatively unsuccessful elsewhere, with even friends like Israel leaving him high and dry. For the government of Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, peace is only conceivable under its terms. Netanyahu has rejected Obama's call for a complete moratorium on the construction of settlements. As a result, Obama has nothing to offer the Palestinians and the Syrians. "We thought we had some leverage," says Martin Indyk, a former ambassador to Israel under the Clinton administration and now an advisor to Obama. "But that proved to be an illusion."

I love me some schadenfreude as much as anyone (especially made in the original German) but this is serious stuff. There's no issue on the world stage where we are better off than we were a year ago (except maybe Iraq and that's no thanks to Obama). I know Team Obama says all this self induced humiliation will pay dividends down the road but as the Der Speigel article goes on to note, Jimmy Carter tried this and we all know how that ended.

I know this all stuff we've saying here for almost two years now but the world is finally catching up and realizing 52% of Americans elected an empty suit as President (and not even a nice hand tailored one but an off the rack, department store clearance sale suit).

The world is a tough place. Foreign leaders don't care how dreamy your eyes are or what your pecs are like. They want to know how much they can get from you or how hard you are going to push them to get what you want. Right now, friend and foe alike is finding out Obama is a soft touch. That's not good for us and it's not good for the world.

Gotta hand it to Team McCain, they nailed this one.

3 I wish the McCain campaign had continued those mocking ads. There was a moment in the late summer where they had a few good ones like this. They were great -- and you know they had to have gotten under the narcissist's skin. I get to do a lot of "I told you so's" with my libtard friends. Too bad for the country, though. Welcome, Black Carter, indeed.

8 Obama's ineptitude and spinelessness go well beyond  ordinary  public perception. The recent endorsement of Obama's delegation to the UN of a Muslim sponsored resolution that calls for the punishment of any individual, entity or government that slanders religion (read Islam only) is breathtaking. In direct violation of the First Amendment.

9 The only question now is how long before another major attack against the U.S.?  There are a lot of sharks out there and Bami has been throwing chum in the waters as fast as he can.

That at the same time he is dragging his crank in the water with the chum.

When they bite it off he'll blame Bush.

Of course the press will all be on board with that.

Patterico links to Newsbusters to find this criticism:

The word these days is optics, visuals, signals. In the Carter presidency, the optics were not exactly robust, and Ronald Reagan rode that to a big victory in 1980. Is the Obama White House sending some Carteresque signals these days? Some see that in the deep bow to the Emperor of Japan, an unforced error say critics. Then there was, there was what happened in China: Obama got nothing in the way of concessions over there in spite of playing the polite visitor. And his effort to speak directly to the Chinese was jammed by the government. Third, that decision to try the terrorists up in that federal court in New York City. Again, nothing that had to be done, and critics say it shows that Obama, his team doesn't understand this is a war we're in. David, that's the question. These optics are everything in a president.

86 I've said before that we've elected Willy Loman as President, and it becomes even more obvious with every day that goes by. He is a (not very good) salesman who thinks that being "well liked" is the key to success, and is devastated when he finds out that he is badly mistaken.

I have very little sympathy for certain Obama voters* who are now realizing what a feckless catastrophe their candidate is in office. McCain was not my first (or even third) choice, but was clearly the better candidate in any sensible comparison between the two men; I remain mystified as to how so many "centrists" convinced themselves otherwise.

These Obama-voters are the people who convinced themselves that Obama would govern from the center; that he would bring his legendary smarts to bear on the tough issues of the day; and that his natural charm would somehow grease the wheels of Congress and allow his agenda to move forward. In other words, these people voted for a figment of their imaginations, not the actual candidate who ended up winning the election because of them. As a result, my opinion of these peoples' opinions has dropped rather precipitously. It's like finding out that a smart, witty person sincerely believes in Bigfoot. Sure, they're great fun and sometimes confer good advice...but they believe in Bigfoot. How reliable or trustworthy can they really be?

I'd loan then ten bucks, but not a thousand; I'd invite them over for a party, but I wouldn't let them watch my house. I'd take them to a doctor's appointment, but I wouldn't loan them my car. They are, in a word, untrustworthy. Which is why whenever someone points out an essay or other piece by e.g. McArdle or Althouse, my reaction is always the same: "Bigfoot, dude. Bigfoot."

*Althouse, McArdle, etc.

96 43 Patterico links to Newsbusters to find this criticism: The word these days is optics, visuals, signals. In the Carter presidency, the optics were not exactly robust, and Ronald Reagan rode that to a big victory in 1980. Is the Obama White House sending some Carteresque signals these days? Some see that in the deep bow to the Emperor of Japan, an unforced error... Again, nothing that had to be done, and critics say it shows that Obama, his team doesn't understand this is a war we're in. David, that's the question. These optics are everything in a president. From. Chris. Matthews. Hey, Chrissy... get a bigger shovel. You're gonna need it, little girl. I don't really think Buchanan was acting in righteous defense of any principle or ideology: he didn't really have it in him. He was, like Barry, a talker and not a doer. He's near the top of any "worst American Presidents" list mainly because he could have intervened to stop the tragedy of the Civil War, and didn't. He was a creature of sloth and indecision, and was elected President at the worst possible time, when his failings could cause the worst possible harm.

Ulysses S. Grant, though I love him as a general and a patriot, was a lousy president. He never took a dime himself, but he allowed a lot of graft and corruption to flourish in his Administration. He could have been instrumental in reforming Reconstruction-era policies to energize the devastated Southern regions; instead, his policies helped to ensure that the post-war South remained a backwater for seventy more years.

Woodrow Wilson is one of my favorite whipping-posts; it was "progressive" statism (almost outright fascism) and incoherent reasons for entering WWI that puts him on the list. And his stupid "League of Nations" was completely unable to stop the terrible slaughter of WWII (complete ineffectualness being a trait it shares with the modern-day UN), mostly due to Wilson's own blinkered "progressive" ideology. It was also his ham-handed treatment of Japan that helped to turn them from an ally in World War I to a brutal enemy in World War II.

Happily, just about all American conservatives seem to understand this, because the ONLY things I've heard about Obama's assassination are thinly-concealed wishful thinking on lefty sites.

156 Over the weekend, one of my most succinct friends, explained what he thought was happening.  Mind you, he was/is one of BO's biggest fans.  However, he now blames the problems on the fact that "on one in the administration has ever run anything.", that there is "no one in the administration with experience, in real time, in the real world, running a business of any kind"  He basically said "we are living in a theoretical world right now", in other worlds, "this is precisely what happens when you have a bunch of academics running the place without a single real world experience pragmatist in sight"  He made a great case for how "academics are just perennial students".  How they never leave "the system"  How, for the most part, they are not students who could not afford a college education and had to work two jobs to have it.  Instead he says they are the middle and uper class "kids" whose parent paid outright for the education and who didn't have to lift a finger to work for anything.  He says they simply went on job interviews, were terrified of the process of being judged and simply enrolled in more education until the reached their PHD and secured their place in academia.  He said all they have to do is a little research, write a few books, get a few grants and teach a couple of classes in exchange for an exorbitant salary and health benefits second only to the government.   Anyway, he said this lack of legitimate, real world experience of anyone in the administration and tthe fact that they seem to be wanting to live in a fantasy instead of the reality before them is scaring him.  But, he still doesn't blame BO, he blames "everyone around him".  When another friend said "but he picked everyone around him so therefore it is his responsibility" this friend said "not really, he must be having a tough time".  Was funny to watch everyone jsut slowly walk away from this guy.  He really slowly murdered what started out as a good party.

157 The article goes out of its way to try and make The Precedent look like just another US Chief Executive, maybe a weak one like Carter, but other than that, nothing different. This is so far from the truth that it boggles the mind. The Precedent is the only actual America-hater who has ever occupied the White House. The Precedent is HAPPY to see the US made a mockery of and lose power. This is his intention and has been so from the very start.

This reminds me of those arguing The Precedent's strategy on Afghanistan, failing to realize that the dithering IS the strategy - everything is built around the Traitor-in-Chief's continued ability to dither and bleed our troops. The truth of the situation is just too much for many to acknowledge.

The paper's musings about how The Precedent will change in order to help America is almost laughable. Any idiot could have predicted all of this, which is why this idiot is doing it.

It will be either The Precedent or the US. A choice must be made, because both will not emerge from the Indonesian imbecile's tenure intact. As the US hasn't the guts or brains to do what's necessary (as was so evident in the screeches against the legitimate Constitutional eligibility problems being heard in court) it seems that secession and a breakup of the US into marxist nightmare and Constitutional union is going to be the best we can hope for.

165 He never took a dime himself, but he allowed a lot of graft and corruption to flourish in his Administration.

Stephen Ambrose made a pretty good case that none of that really mattered, and in most cases it was actually beneficial in getting the major projects of the day completed.

His To America included some rather fresh looks contradicting "conventional" historical wisdom about past presidents.

172 I really can't get too exercised; ever since I started school in 1965, the world has been ending, population explosion, war with USSR, ozone layer, ice age, greenhouse effect, acid rain, anarchy, dirty damn hippies, various plagues, pollution that made Indians cry, no bald eagles or alligators, Chernobyl and Three Mile Island, storm of 1993, Katrina, Future Shock, every hurricane ever like Andrew, SARS AIDS Ebola, the deadly Obesity Epidemic--erally, the world has been ending since JFK got mad at the Cubans as far as I know, and I don't even remember that.  I do remember the USSR swallowing up various countries and Viet Nam and stuff, which was also the world ending.  Plus Watergate, the Hostages, Ronald Reagan starting WW III every 2 minutes, and so on.  I am weary unto death of the world ending and all of humanity being reduced to stumbling wrecks grubbing for turnips amongst radioactive ruins while fending off plague victims.  I simply can't do it any more.

There were dumbasses who believed that BS even after they were sent to a gulag or death camp.  Some people will cling to the flimsiest fiction if it means they don't have to admit they were mistaken.

Nights, weekends, whatever it takes.""No, no, I don't think that's going to do it. These reports you handed in, it's almost as if you have no business training at all. I don't know what this is supposed to be.""Well, I'm just trying to get ahead.""I'm sorry, there's just no way that we can keep you on.""I don't even really work here.""That's what makes this so difficult."Point of information- is the correct usage "President Milli" or is it "President Vanilli"?

They nailed what? Team McShame didn't understand the threat America would be under with the Ineligible Imbecile from Indonesia occupying the Oval Office. The rest of us knew that this was what we were headed towards, but McShame kept acting as if the US would be just fine and dandy with the America-hater running our Executive branch.

182 Arguably, if he had acted more forcefully, the Civil War might have been avoided

The Civil War was inevitable from the time of the "Nullification Crisis" when Andrew Jackson threaten to invade SC over tariffs.  You may even say it was inevitable from the time the Constitution was written w/o specifying who determined what the Constitution meant and then when Adams and Marshall conspired to create the case that transferred that power to the federal government.

Google or Bing up the "peace commission" and its outcome.

Actually I would nominate FDR as the worse president with Lincoln a close second.  Carter was too incompetent to gather much in the way of bad for the country.

Ditto.  I was at a healthcare protest in an urban area last Friday and the icy stares from black passersby were unmistakeable.  I heard a black guy on his cellphone, calling the cops.  Also, 20-something white kids are still heavily invested (at least in socialism) too.  A street vendor dished out food and made a constant stream of snide remarks about "the teabaggers being out in force."

A young woman standing near me, close to the street, was holding up a small sign about stopping the healthcare takeover and a young (white) bicycle messenger made a grab for it.  There was a definite "us" against "them" vibe going on.

People need to start pushing the idea that if we're teabaggers, libs and Obama are the teabagees (ie, the ones with our junk in their mouth).  That'll shut down the whole meme faster than you can say "Anderson Cooper".

As someone serving in a Caribbean nation that rhymes with "Tuba" I would not at all be surprised if this poor excuse for a CinC decides to pull a Jimmy out of his hat and give GTMO to Cuba.  Not surprised in the least.

The Civil War was only made inevitable when they fired on Ft Sumter.  There was no reason that the South could not have accepted a partial defeat on the extension issue and not gone to war. In Reconstruction, after losing the war they managed to negate most of the social and political gains of the blacks. They could have done the same without fighting the war.

The difficulty was that slavery was never only a economic issue, but a social one and cultural one as well.
