— DrewM Ouch because it's true.
In Tokyo, the new center-left government even pulled out of its participation in a mission which saw the Japanese navy refueling US warships in the Indian Ocean as part of the Afghanistan campaign. In Beijing, Obama failed to achieve any important concessions whatsoever. There will be no binding commitments from China to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. A revaluation of the Chinese currency, which is kept artificially weak, has been postponed. Sanctions against Iran? Not a chance. Nuclear disarmament? Not an issue for the Chinese. The White House did not even stand up for itself when it came to the question of human rights in China. The president, who had said only a few days earlier that freedom of expression is a universal right, was coerced into attending a joint press conference with Chinese President Hu Jintao, at which questions were forbidden. Former US President George W. Bush had always managed to avoid such press conferences.
...Obama's new foreign policy has also been relatively unsuccessful elsewhere, with even friends like Israel leaving him high and dry. For the government of Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, peace is only conceivable under its terms. Netanyahu has rejected Obama's call for a complete moratorium on the construction of settlements. As a result, Obama has nothing to offer the Palestinians and the Syrians. "We thought we had some leverage," says Martin Indyk, a former ambassador to Israel under the Clinton administration and now an advisor to Obama. "But that proved to be an illusion."
I love me some schadenfreude as much as anyone (especially made in the original German) but this is serious stuff. There's no issue on the world stage where we are better off than we were a year ago (except maybe Iraq and that's no thanks to Obama). I know Team Obama says all this self induced humiliation will pay dividends down the road but as the Der Speigel article goes on to note, Jimmy Carter tried this and we all know how that ended.
I know this all stuff we've saying here for almost two years now but the world is finally catching up and realizing 52% of Americans elected an empty suit as President (and not even a nice hand tailored one but an off the rack, department store clearance sale suit).
The world is a tough place. Foreign leaders don't care how dreamy your eyes are or what your pecs are like. They want to know how much they can get from you or how hard you are going to push them to get what you want. Right now, friend and foe alike is finding out Obama is a soft touch. That's not good for us and it's not good for the world.
Gotta hand it to Team McCain, they nailed this one.

McCain: "[Senator Obama] is a decent person and a person that you do not have to be scared about as President of the United States"
Come to think of it, the above statement puts McCain in violation of McCain-Feingold, if I'm not mistaken., because it contains a full endorsement of a candidate.
Good job, John.

Patterico links to Newsbusters to find this criticism:
The word these days is optics, visuals, signals. In the Carter presidency, the optics were not exactly robust, and Ronald Reagan rode that to a big victory in 1980. Is the Obama White House sending some Carteresque signals these days? Some see that in the deep bow to the Emperor of Japan, an unforced error say critics. Then there was, there was what happened in China: Obama got nothing in the way of concessions over there in spite of playing the polite visitor. And his effort to speak directly to the Chinese was jammed by the government. Third, that decision to try the terrorists up in that federal court in New York City. Again, nothing that had to be done, and critics say it shows that Obama, his team doesn't understand this is a war we're in. David, that's the question. These optics are everything in a president.

I have very little sympathy for certain Obama voters* who are now realizing what a feckless catastrophe their candidate is in office. McCain was not my first (or even third) choice, but was clearly the better candidate in any sensible comparison between the two men; I remain mystified as to how so many "centrists" convinced themselves otherwise.
These Obama-voters are the people who convinced themselves that Obama would govern from the center; that he would bring his legendary smarts to bear on the tough issues of the day; and that his natural charm would somehow grease the wheels of Congress and allow his agenda to move forward. In other words, these people voted for a figment of their imaginations, not the actual candidate who ended up winning the election because of them. As a result, my opinion of these peoples' opinions has dropped rather precipitously. It's like finding out that a smart, witty person sincerely believes in Bigfoot. Sure, they're great fun and sometimes confer good advice...but they believe in Bigfoot. How reliable or trustworthy can they really be?
I'd loan then ten bucks, but not a thousand; I'd invite them over for a party, but I wouldn't let them watch my house. I'd take them to a doctor's appointment, but I wouldn't loan them my car. They are, in a word, untrustworthy. Which is why whenever someone points out an essay or other piece by e.g. McArdle or Althouse, my reaction is always the same: "Bigfoot, dude. Bigfoot."
*Althouse, McArdle, etc.

History nerd time. I assume you name Buchanan the least valuable player becuase he did nothing as the southern states began to secede leaving the mess for Lincoln to clean up. Arguably, if he had acted more forcefully, the Civil War might have been avoided.
My defense of Buchanan is that in addition to his sincere belief in the right to secede, if he had acted he would have narrowed Lincoln's options. He was a the lamest of ducks and may have chosen the least bad of a bad set of options.

I still think it's FDR. He inflicted huge positive harms on the country. Yeah, he fought WW2, but any idiot faced with the same situation would have done the same.
Buchanan was more of a passive nonentity.

I heard someone say that this is not surprising - a man who never goverened is bad at governing.
It's much worse than that. Here is a man who has never had an honest job. He has never been held to account for anything. Suddenly he is thrust into a situation where he works 24-7 and is ultimately accountable.
This fool is exhausted.

I don't really think Buchanan was acting in righteous defense of any principle or ideology: he didn't really have it in him. He was, like Barry, a talker and not a doer. He's near the top of any "worst American Presidents" list mainly because he could have intervened to stop the tragedy of the Civil War, and didn't. He was a creature of sloth and indecision, and was elected President at the worst possible time, when his failings could cause the worst possible harm.
Ulysses S. Grant, though I love him as a general and a patriot, was a lousy president. He never took a dime himself, but he allowed a lot of graft and corruption to flourish in his Administration. He could have been instrumental in reforming Reconstruction-era policies to energize the devastated Southern regions; instead, his policies helped to ensure that the post-war South remained a backwater for seventy more years.
Woodrow Wilson is one of my favorite whipping-posts; it was "progressive" statism (almost outright fascism) and incoherent reasons for entering WWI that puts him on the list. And his stupid "League of Nations" was completely unable to stop the terrible slaughter of WWII (complete ineffectualness being a trait it shares with the modern-day UN), mostly due to Wilson's own blinkered "progressive" ideology. It was also his ham-handed treatment of Japan that helped to turn them from an ally in World War I to a brutal enemy in World War II.

This reminds me of those arguing The Precedent's strategy on Afghanistan, failing to realize that the dithering IS the strategy - everything is built around the Traitor-in-Chief's continued ability to dither and bleed our troops. The truth of the situation is just too much for many to acknowledge.
The paper's musings about how The Precedent will change in order to help America is almost laughable. Any idiot could have predicted all of this, which is why this idiot is doing it.
It will be either The Precedent or the US. A choice must be made, because both will not emerge from the Indonesian imbecile's tenure intact. As the US hasn't the guts or brains to do what's necessary (as was so evident in the screeches against the legitimate Constitutional eligibility problems being heard in court) it seems that secession and a breakup of the US into marxist nightmare and Constitutional union is going to be the best we can hope for.

The Civil War was inevitable from the time of the "Nullification Crisis" when Andrew Jackson threaten to invade SC over tariffs. You may even say it was inevitable from the time the Constitution was written w/o specifying who determined what the Constitution meant and then when Adams and Marshall conspired to create the case that transferred that power to the federal government.
Google or Bing up the "peace commission" and its outcome.
Actually I would nominate FDR as the worse president with Lincoln a close second. Carter was too incompetent to gather much in the way of bad for the country.

Ditto. I was at a healthcare protest in an urban area last Friday and the icy stares from black passersby were unmistakeable. I heard a black guy on his cellphone, calling the cops. Also, 20-something white kids are still heavily invested (at least in socialism) too. A street vendor dished out food and made a constant stream of snide remarks about "the teabaggers being out in force."
A young woman standing near me, close to the street, was holding up a small sign about stopping the healthcare takeover and a young (white) bicycle messenger made a grab for it. There was a definite "us" against "them" vibe going on.

The Civil War was only made inevitable when they fired on Ft Sumter. There was no reason that the South could not have accepted a partial defeat on the extension issue and not gone to war. In Reconstruction, after losing the war they managed to negate most of the social and political gains of the blacks. They could have done the same without fighting the war.
The difficulty was that slavery was never only a economic issue, but a social one and cultural one as well.
