— Ace Just a draft? Well, maybe. But it jibes with previous reports.
There are obviously two problems here: The first, more important problem is that these people should not be held in American prisons, where they are then vested with additional rights, and may wind up petitioning for release. At Gitmo, they have less such rights (although damn do those courts keep finding they have more).
The second problem was more of a tactic, a way to block this without having to prevail on this first point: The NIMBY question, where we kept asking, rhetorically, "Well, do you want these terrorists living by you?" This was always a fairly minor objection, relatively speaking, compared to the first, but it was used because it generates a visceral reaction.
Well, since Obama's able to sell the politicians in his home state's political machine on accepting these guys (who are, in fact, dangerous, as are the brothers-in-arms who might be tempted to come by and say hello), that second objection is mooted, except for the citizens of Illinois, I guess, and what are they going to do about it?
But the first objection remains powerful. And we still have no good answer from Obama on this point, except that it somehow makes us safer to be nice to terrorists.

They'll fit in well with other anti-American terrorists like Billy Ayers.
Good point, they can hold strategy meetings together.

Thank you. I reported myself once to the "fishy" White House email address, but it was soon discontinued and they never got back to me.

I don't understand how people are made any less safe by having Gitmo terrorists locked up in new prisons in Illinois.
I also don't get how New York City is endangered by holding civilian trials.
I think it's fucking stupid but I don't think New York will crumble because of it.

I think what folks are worrying about, to the extent that anyone is actually worrying, is that KSM's buddies might decide to make a "statement" about how they feel about American justice and because the trial is in NYC, the "statement" will also be there.

Plus, Mr. D'oh and I are tired and I for one, have had too much wine.
But seriously, I'd love to have a civil debate/conversation with you. Sorry if I came across as rude and aggressive.
Peace to you.

But then, all of you are paragons of freedom & Constitution but wouldn't know the diff between the latter and ingredients listed on a Campbell's soup can, wouldn't know that the gitmo dudes are not convicted criminals--most haven't been arraigned. But you sure are scared!
And you believe everything the military tells you. Tools you are.

There's also the access that the prisoners can have to lines of communication with their comrades.

On this issue I do blame Bush. These people should have been tried, executed as appropriate, or turned lose in their home countries as appropriate long ago BEFORE the courts got involved.
Bush allowed these people to sit down there like a festering turd until the liberals got Kennedy out of the left side of the bed.

Here's what we got during the first WTC bomber trial:
escape attempts
wounded and maimed guards
defense lawyers passing information to terrorists
the plotting of further attacks from behind bars
security breaches that helped bin Laden
another WTC bombing
Holder says everyone will like us for this, but it turns out that al Qaeda was not impressed by the majesty of American justice nor grateful for it. But it will be different this time because Obama's doing it, right?
Another issue was that Justice withheld vital information about terrorists from elected officials for years, so as not to endanger their conviction, and we're already rebuilding the Gorelick Wall where the FBI can't talk to CIA. How did that work out in Ft. Hood? Not to mention half the Justice Dept. had to recuse themselves because they were representing Gitmo detainees a year ago.
You also get a hold-out juror who will not give the death penalty. You get a world propaganda stage for KSM and his lawyers. You get a big fat target painted on New York for the duration. You get a hugely expensive security condition for years. You get a divisive GetBush!-show trial of America. And mostly you get unaccountable judges putting themselves in charge of a war and extending every courtesy, right and benefit of the doubt to cold-blooded genocidal maniacs. Do not be surprised when somewhere down the line these judges try to release terrorists into America.
But other than that, it's a great idea.

Maybe we could Barry & Eric to organize that community.

So, in addition to all the luxuries the terrorists are already getting, they will now be in US prisons, where they can't be interrogated, will have ample time to plot more terrorist attacks and pass on information to other terrorists via thier lawyers and visitors; they will also be able to convert other prison inmates into Islamic terrorists, AND they get to put out terrorist propaganda every time the court is in serssion.
A great deal for them. As for escaping, they won't need to. All they have to do is make sure there are some Muslims on the jury, and they will walk. Even if they are convicted, they will rule the prison and be able to plot terror attacks from the comfort of their cells. Prison doesn't stop mafia dons from giving orders, what makes anyone think it will stop terrorists?
