Eikenberry working on a surrender to Taliban?
— Uncle Jimbo

ThreatsWatch has a scary bit of intel that needs to be confirmed or blown out of the water.

It comes to our attention that the MEMRI Blog highlights an article from the Saudi _al-Watan_
in Arabic that - according to an Afghan source - the United States is
talking to the Taliban seeking to trade control of 5 provinces in
exchange for the cessation of attacks on US bases. MEMRI summarizes:

An Afghan source in Kabul reports that U.S.
Ambassador in Afghanistan Karl Eikenberry is holding secret talks with
Taliban elements headed by the movement's foreign minister, Ahmad
Mutawakil, at a secret location in Kabul. According to the source, the U.S. has
offered the Taliban control of the Kandahar, Helmand, Oruzgan, Kunar
and Nuristan provinces in return for a halt to the Taliban missile
attacks on U.S. bases.

Kunar province borders the Khyber Pass region where the majority of US and NATO supplies
pass enroute from Pakistan. And the4 remaining four provinces
constitute fully the southern 25% of Afghanistan's territory.

Like I said this is a sole source so far, but sadly it fits in with Eikenberry's strategically leaked messages stabbing Gen. McChrystal in the back by calling for no reinforcements. It also offers President Obama the opportunity to start the exfil from the country and avoid having to attempt to win.

Just a question that pops into my meager little brain, what do we think the Taliban will do if we surrender the 5 provinces to them? Renounce their avowed goal of an Islamic State leading to a larger Caliphate? Settle down and become kindly goat herders studying the Koran in pursuit of peace?

or

Take this as another sign of the weak horse status of the declining United States? A sign to Pakistan that there is no point to their continuing operations against their own Taliban? A good time  for the Talibs to declare Greater Pashtunistan on both sides of the border?

This surrender would undoubtedly work out just as well as the dozen or so that the Pakistanis have signed with the same folks. Oh wait the Talibs violated every single one of these agreements and simply used them as an opportunity to recruit and rebuild leading to their resurgence on both sides of the border they don't recognize.

This would be a mistake so blatant and obvious that I cannot conceive of it.

Since we are hearing that surrender is on the table, we better take a look at what it would take to win. The Foreign Policy Initiative has a document exploding many of the myths about Gen. McChrystal's request for a fully-resourced Counterinsurgency strategy.

4 Can we charge Obama with treason when this appeasement occurs or do we have to wait until after the next Al Qaeda slaughter of Americans?

This surrender would undoubtedly work out just as well as the dozen or so that the Pakistanis have signed with the same folks.

I suppose you don't remember Obama telling his cultists that "This time it will be different."?  They believe, in their awesomeness, that all the things that have failed for every other leftist in the history of the world are going to magically fall into place this time.

5 Just a question that pops into my meager little brain, what do we think the Taliban will do if we surrender the 5 provinces to them?

Who is this "we" you speak about? The Precedent and his adminstration and the Washington junta are a "they", and they are on the other side.

You have to keep in mind what this administration wants, and that is the death of American power. Even if they are unsuccessful, they have done enough damage to our allies that the US will not be trustworthy again (look at how an insane American public put this band of lunatics in charge, with the Indonesian imbecile at the head).

The damage has been done. Now, we have just the consequences to look forward to.

6 Wonderful.  We insist that Pakistan deny the Taliban safe havens in their territory from which to attack Afghanistan, but (according to this report) we're going to give the Taliban five provinces' worth of safe havens in Afghan territory from which to attack Pakistan.  The Taliban is finally fighting a two-front war, and now we're going to abandon one of those fronts?

And whatever troops of ours remain in Afghanistan.  The only question is whether they feel a need to be clever and run those attacks by 'new, independent, unaffiliated militias' or will they be so convinced of US cowardice not to bother?

Conceive of it. This is just one more in a long list of blatant, obvious "mistakes" that this America-hating adminstration and Washington junta has made. A long, long list - and most were not mistakes, but intended to be blatantly and obviously injurious to our nation and our interests.

Posted by: Mat at November 23, 2009 03:40 PM (d8AS2)

Exactly. And to understand them is to understand why they must be killed, but more importantly, how they must be killed. We currently fight tribal cultures as if their are individualistic and that will never work. They don't understand us and think that we are weak and will eventually just go away (which is, sadly, true). If we truly wanted to minimize the killing necessary (and, frankly, I don't care too much about that, since those who start these wars need to suffer enough to not thinking about starting them with us again), then we would realize that collective punishment on the tribal level is what is called for when dealing with tribal societies.

Of course, that old standby of "Best friend, worst enemy" would take care of these problems, but we don't seem to have the will for that anymore. Somewhere along the line we caught some disease that made us think that being a best friend to the enemy, and being an unreliable ally to our friends, will be lead to a magic world of hugs and kisses.

Lastly, I would just say that the whole threat from the arab/persian/muslim world starts and stops at the control of the gulf oil fields. We are too politically correct to handle this problem at that simple source, but that is the key to everything. Without control of those fields, the arab/perian/muslim world is almost totally defanged.

I agree with you on that. The whole "hearts and minds" concept that now dominates all discussion on the AO stems directly from bullshit propaganda on how the Americans did everything backassward in Vietnam. It's also an outgrowth of the amazingly corrupt, incompetent and enemy supporting bullshit of the UN Peacekeeping daze of the '90s.

The primary usefulness of all these great cash giveaways and all the "lets build em pretty things" is  masturbatory on our part. Makes us feel better about ourselves. To most of the indigs, it's said "Yeah, well, the Russians built stuff for us too, look where that got em."

There are some who will be appreciative, but they're already on side. Those off side don't give a shit, wont give a shit and are not impressed.

What does impress such as them is fear. Fear is respect in that and nearly all other tribal cultures. That's a known known.

Posted by: Grimmy at November 23, 2009 04:09 PM (qGfjs)

Yep. It's also a terrible misunderstanding of Reconstruction and the Marshall Plan. Rebuilding the enemy is only of use after we have totally decimated them and gotten an unconditional surrender, and then, it was still a CHOICE on our part. Our current concept of being EXPECTED to rebuild what we destroy in war is about the dumbest policy I have ever heard of in my life. There are wars and enemies that do not deserve anything but a beating and should be forced to live in the squalor of their own making afterwards.

There are times when salting the fields is appropriate and necessary. It all depends on the enemy and what drives them.

63 "This would be a mistake so blatant and obvious that I cannot conceive of it."

Uncle Jimbo, you really need to stretch out that imagination.  Start with the Pol Pot regime.  Then think for a while about Treblinka, Poland.  When you realize that these horrible atrocities are possible, nothing this Communist in our White House does is surprising.

If Obama comes up with the same solution to America's "Conservative Problem" that Adolph did regarding Germany's "Jewish Problem", and starts the trains rolling TOMORROW, I'd be nonplussed, completely un-surprised.

Cannot conceive of it?  There is nothing Obama and the dems can do that would fit that phrase for me.  Unless it was something good, righteous, or actually beneficial to America.  Then I might have to be shocked.

Taqi,

I'm not terribly surprised by this either.  When this jackass (literally and figuratively) was elected, I thought that we'd be out of Afghanistan within 5 years.  Events continue to support my initial supposition.

Look, the fact is that the Messiah basically said in no uncertain terms that he wanted to be out of Afghanistan before his term ended.  That would mean the end of 2011, maybe mid-2012 tops.  What this story says to me is that we're working on slowly withdrawing from the country in stages.  We give up some territory now, give up a little more later, and then at the very end, we'll send helicopters to the roof of the embassy in Kabul to withdraw our last staff there.  Oh yeah, where else did this happen again?...hhhmmm...the strategy in that war worked just as well, didn't it?

Some of those provinces are great places to grow and prosper. Others are great places to smuggle from and prosper. Maybe the Taliban just want nice places to grow crops and to be left alone. Uh-huh.

74 Currently working in N2KL AO, Nuristan and Kunar included. The inclusion of Kunar in this is a red flag. It can get kinetic there, and some valleys are red and will stay that way. But overall we (CF and GIRoA) enjoy much public support and it is an important province, not desert like the south. I am throwing out the BS flag on this report (the original source article I mean). Doesn't fit.

To whom it may concern:

There is no truth to reports that the U.S. Embassy is engaging in secret talks with elements of the Taliban. Our position on the inclusion of Taliban and other fighters into Afghan society remains unchanged: we support the efforts of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghan to reintegrate fighters and other disaffected individuals into society, under the Afghan constitution.  This process must be Afghan-led.

What a surprise. The man that was hellbent on pulling out of Iraq no matter what the situation was wants to pull out of Afghanistan. Eesh, again say what you will about McCain, but we all know he would never pull or tolerate this kind of crap. Obama, however, is a gutless coward that never should've been elected to any office in this country.

I saw this kinda thing coming. I wish I had been wrong. Hopefully, this story won't pan out, but it's Obama. Stupid decisions are a given.
