Funny Ha-Ha or Funny Strange?
— Ace

I think it's both but I'm not sure.

I sort of dig it.

5 Is is supposed to be funny? Seems like just more evidence that SNL isn't funny at all anymore.

Posted by: ethos at December 22, 2009 07:39 AM (0fzsA)

6 And the video rather disturbing on so many different levels.

Usually each week SNL gives me a few laughs.  Thank god for DVR that allows me to skip skits that suck.  But this one had me laughung hard.  It was so unexpected and wacky.  Andy Samburg has a crazy sense of humor and I give this a thumbs up.

Posted by: California Red at December 22, 2009 07:44 AM (7uWb8)

10 Since it's SNL, 'ha-ha' is off-limits.  'Strange' is the best they can do.

Posted by: nickless at December 22, 2009 07:45 AM (MMC8r)

11 This is pretty much a copy of everything that Tim and Eric have been doing in the Tim and Eric Show Great Job for several years now.  Funny, but derivative.

Posted by: Mike the Grate at December 22, 2009 07:45 AM (MUB6D)

12 Although this is a joke, obviously, it has to me a very Lovecraft sort of vibe. It's sort of this weird hypnotic nightmare where childish stuff and horrific evil mix. also precious: Franco looking at the camera to ask, "What?"

13 I would only have laughed if it was Obama's cabinet members and the game ended with Obama stabbing them all in the back.

Maybe Rock the Vote should promote this party-game as a way of encouraging support for ObamaCare among the Faithful.  Given the physical attributes of the typically Moonbat honey or hunk, sometimes withholding sex just isn't going to be "sufficiently incentivising", IYKWIMAITYD.

16 More disturbing than funny I think. It's basically "comedy by the formula." The formula being "show opposites" - in this case life (innocent childhood - jammies and light sticks) with death (drugs and murder). reminds me of the "dead baby" jokes going around in the late 60s. Glad I no longer own a TV. Don't miss it.

18 >>>.this was posted by the same guy who said that Chevy Chase at one time was the funniest fucking guy on the planet. Well I don't think I said *that.* But he was funny. How funny? Well, he was so funny they made movies starring him for 30 years despite only three or four of them being funny and only one or two of them making a profit. When you make movies for 30 years despite them sucking, hey, you must be sort of funny. Or at least potentially funny.

Posted by: ace at December 22, 2009 07:50 AM (jlvw3)

19 >>> It's basically "comedy by the formula." Known to many as "comedy."

21 what you say is true, about formula, but most humor follows rules and patterns.

Posted by: ace at December 22, 2009 07:53 AM (jlvw3)

22 also chevy chase was the original Professor of Comedy, so that's a pretty big kudo there. (Kidding in case you don't know. Howard Stern used to but on him sarcastically for this.)

Posted by: ace at December 22, 2009 08:01 AM (jlvw3)

23 Strange, and I got the formula pretty quickly. But still, my first impulse was to copy the link to send to my wife. So, it gets a stamp of QUALITY.

Posted by: CJ at December 22, 2009 08:02 AM (9KqcB)

24 Well, I think it's funny.  Of course they may have been doing variations of that same skit for the last 10 years on SNL and I probably wouldn't know any different.

My opinion on humor is a lot like Homer Simpson laughing at the car crash movie during a mandatory driver safety class after an accident.  "It's funny because it happened to somebody else."

Posted by: Mark in Texas at December 22, 2009 08:03 AM (9kJVv)

25 Yes, "most humor follows rules and patterns" but this is just lame - i.e. showing children taking drugs and killing each other. Maybe it's just me getting older. I don't find today's late night monologues funny either. They're all so predictable. I still laugh at comments by posters and M&Ms at this sight, though. That's why I lurk here several times each day and night.

Posted by: Lugs at December 22, 2009 08:03 AM (MMzKf)

26 Of course, I meant to write "sight."

Posted by: Lugs at December 22, 2009 08:05 AM (MMzKf)

27 just re: formula... A lot of times this stuff follows the same structures or oppositions (as you note). The "originality factor' is rarely a new structure, but simply new stuff to plug into the existing structure. When someone does come up with an original gag structure, it tends to be copied endlessly quickly to the point where the structure quickly becomes passe and "formula," too.

Posted by: ace at December 22, 2009 08:06 AM (jlvw3)

28 Very funny. It heals all pain from childhood in one fell swoop.

Posted by: can you hear me now at December 22, 2009 08:07 AM (qvLJq)

29 Ace - I agree on your formula comment. Maybe I am just sensitive to the childhood thing. I am sick of our culture's assault on children. I don't find jokes about dead babies or suicide or missing children funny either. I'm old fashioned.

I took them to be the youngish-looking adults that are typically in children's shows or Up with People and crap like that. Adults acting like kids for a kid show. I don't know, I don't think Samberg had in mind any assault on children. I think he just had a ridiculous idea.

Posted by: ace at December 22, 2009 08:46 AM (jlvw3)

42 Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was busting on The Wiggles, those puerile douchebags from Australia who seduce our children with simple dittys and sight gags. If you ever see a Wiggle pass your home slowly in an Econoline, call the authorities.

43 Looks to me like what that Seattle chick in Perugia, Italy was into according to the  Italian legal system.

This reminds me of some kids I lived with in a dorm in college - they responded like robots to peer pressure. I am quite sure that the robot-like sheeple behavior of some college students is even worse now.

45 This was a pretty weak episode all together.  Maybe only slightly less bad than last week with the warewolf kid from the vampire movie.  He was awful -- they had to be embarrassed to have him on.

47 If you have kids...

... and have had to sit through endless airings of the same 6 TeleTubbies episodes...

... and the same 2 seasons of The Wiggles...

...then no explanation is necessary.

If not, then no explanation is possible.

A good parent would make their kids watch this instead of the Wiggles. Then make them act it out.  With fake knives though.

I'm not even sure they're supposed to be children at all. I took them to be the youngish-looking adults that are typically in children's shows or Up with People and crap like that. Adults acting like kids for a kid show.

Agreed. They were not supposed to be children. I would kill them for that. But they walked the line. So, it's harmless fun.

And I don't think think is a gag only for parents who had sit through the Wiggles, or any other children's show. The Wiggles is perfectly fine for kids. And most parents welcome shows like the Wiggles, over the "edgy" (wink wink) alternatives.

It's just a silly gag.

All this discussion of Aussie children's shows and no mention of Aunty Jack?  That was one seriously-messed-up bit of programming that makes the SNL skit above look tame by comparison.  I mean, a children's show where the main character is a towering psychotic transvestite (complete with walrus moustache) who always ended each show warning kids to tune in next week or (and this was his catch-phrase) "I'll come to your house and rip your arms off"....

Seriously.  And I've never encountered an Aussie who spoke of it with anything other than fond nostalgia.  (To be fair, it did provide a springboard for Garry McDonald, whose "Norman Gunston" character was actually a forerunner of the style of comedy that made Sascha Baron Cohen famous.)
