Google: A Day Which Will Live In Obscurity
— Ace

Something small, but compare Bing vs. Google as far as recognizing Dec. 7. (Scroll down to see Bing's treatment; the top of the page as displayed is blank, here.)

Virgina Postrel observed something along the lines of: Given technology's increasing power, there will be fewer and fewer differences between one bit of tech and another; they'll all be able to do it all, pretty much. So the only defining difference will be something not techy in the least -- aesthetics.

Well, I'm liking Bing's judgment and class today, and despising Google's.

Thanks to Dave in Texas.

1 Hey, hey... December 7th is evil, and Google is all about 'Don't be evil' so why would they want to remember it?

You're just a racist hatemonger on the wrong side of HERstory.

10 Because it's real important to defend the right of non-Western nations to create their own empires...or something like that.

Google wants to be a child of the world. The problem is, the only true "citizens of the world" are a relatively small number of educated elites. Every one else cares more for their own people or country than the world. Period.

Either that, or they just don't like America. Well, I got my own problems with her, but I'm not in a position of moral leadership like Google. Screw 'em.

When Japan bombs Pearl Harbor because of oil, it's meh, no biggie.

Got a newer version of the MSN Toolbar and now Bing finishes my words for me. Still haven't searched enough with it to have much of an opinion.

They're a search engine and software company, not an advocacy group, and what they do or do not randomly choose to create special logos for has no bearing on anything. Are you really going to go use Bing because Microsoft made the straight up marketing decision to pimp the dead bodies of US soldiers to appeal to you? Would that make their search better? 57 @10 Horatius:

The issue with the "Death to Nationalism!" idea the left has embraced so wholeheartedly, is that humans are inherently tribal. We find something to group together over.

The entire meaning of supporting your country over your party is inherently nationalist. And they've renounced that. This is nearly-intentional Balkanization at every freaking level.

But this is precisely the area of most difficulty in making stable democracies in the first place: subsuming family, clan, and tribal loyalties somewhat to ensure at least some interest in the continuance of the nation as a whole.

74 I may have to put my money on this and lay in a bear spread on GOOG.  Going two years out, this MS/Yahoo alliance could knock Google down a peg or two.  I'm not sure their public image matches the internal reality right now.

One of my ultra-liberal moonbat friends works for Google.  Called me up the other day bitching about how stifling the internal bureaucracy was and how hard it was to get anything done...internal paralysis, etc, etc, and how he wanted out desperately...and he's only been there a year or so.

This isn't some idealistic/unrealistic neophyte young turk codeslinger either.  This is a methodical, exceptionally competent, very well educated older guy who has been around bureaucracies before and knows how to work within them.  I don't think he expected Google to be as internally encrusted and internally political as it is when he hired on.

Visit the Arizona Memorial. Its a tomb and its treated with the utmost respect,which it should. I was lucky enough to see a family,with permission granted,pour ashes on the sight.Pretty awesome. Leis and flowers all over the place. Fantastic.

Spent 6 hours on the Missouri. Sat in Halsey's chair in Command 1. The place is a bank vault, encased in 2 feet of hardened steel. Saw the planning area where Nimitz did his handiwork. MacArthur had his bedroom-really cool. I was prepped for the tour because i had read the magnificent book on the USS Washington,an upgrade on the Arizona, having 16 inch guns instead of 15,and a girth just being able to squeeze in the locks of Panama. The Washington had been built on the East coast. I practically took over as tour guide and the real tour guide had me answering the ordanance questions. God bless you Ching Lee.

I wouldn't just call out Google on it.  For some reason no mention from any of my other normal engines... not on dogpile, yahoo, or ask either

I don't know that the other companies made a point of saying "look how cool and funny we are for making changes for holidays!!"

98 86, you can go to bing.com, there's a link on the top right, click it. You'll magically replace that commie search engine that fast.

99 33 I remember when Charles Johnson at LGF used to ridicule Google's bias of honoring obscure "international" occasions at the expense of more "American" ones. Wonder if he still does that.

Google honored the American "ride your bike to work day", so put that in your racist pipe and smoke it

100 I'm stuck with Gmail for the present because I don't know of an email provider that does the things that Gmail does... with the tagging and the conversation tracking.

But I've switched my primary search engine to Bing.

101 This kind of crap is why I switched to Bing as my default as soon as Bing became available.

102 Damn, Heather.  Neither December 7 nor December 8 has any significant meaning in the world of Popeye.

103

I was going to sockpuppet a Google hack defending this, but I just can't do it.

104 Bing. Done. Hey,this is really classy and snazzy. Merci beaucoups.

105 Google never commemorates the days it should.  I stopped eating Cheerios and buying clothes from major department stores for the same reason.  If they don't all remember this day, they don't deserve my business. Also removed Drudge as my homepage.

106 I've switched to Bing; the Climategate BS at Googleconvinced me. But before we fall in love with Bing, let's remember that Microsoft literally put the "MS" in MSNBC. I predict Bing will "grow" Left as it becomes more popular.

107 @80
I first visited Hawaii under orders aboard the USCGC Munro. We pulled into Pearl Harbor and passed the USS Arizona rendering full maritime honors...wasn't a dry eye.

Several years after that my Father and I visited the USS Arizona Memorial and there were a couple of adolescent dipshits grab assing and carrying on...the Park Ranger bellowed out this was a tomb, a hallowed site and all respect will be rendered.
That Park Ranger received many thanks that day.

108 I'm not going to shitcan Drudge. He's the one who hung out Lewinski's dress to dry.

109 Isn't Eric a WH insider?  Always wondered how Google makes money.  It certainly isn't from the ads.  Do they sell information about the people who use them?

110 To hell with Google.

111 Same thing happened on D-Day. Bing had Normandy Beach, Google had the birthday of Tetris.

112 100 I'm stuck with Gmail for the present because I don't know of an email provider that does the things that Gmail does...

If you're a Gmail user and have questions about Gmail feature availability in other email services, put the question into a personal email to a friend and Google will get back to you within 24 hours.

113 Several posters have wondered about the Japanese version of things. From my computer in Nagoya, Bing and Google open up to the Japanese versions. Bing (Japan) has a photo of some ancient architecture, interior columns in a stone room of some sort. Clicking on 'Go to Bing in English' brings up the Arizona Memorial photo. It's very tastefully done, with a solemn tone. Google (Japan) has a graphic of Popeye punching a can of spinach with a roundhouse swing. Not sure what that means. Clicking on 'Google.com in English' brings up the image-less Google page. As far as general media, I saw no mention of Pearl Harbor in print or TV, but I don't watch much TV. The news programs I heard during dinner yesterday said nothing on it. The Anniversary of the Hiroshima atom bomb is a national event, of course. I'd also be interested in a procedure to switch out the Google search slot carried by default in Safari (Mac) to Bing, if there is one available. Best regards, Peter Warner. Nagoya, Japan Best regards, Peter Warner.

114 Well google.com has switched to popeye too, with the attendant note that its the creators birthday

115 If you look at Google's logo for Dec. 8, I'm not sure exactly what to think.

Definitely not Pearl Harbor-related. But the guy was the official symbol of the U.S. Navy's fighter squadron during the war.

Popeye would go medieval on the Google CEO's ass for dissing Pearl Harbor Day, in light of the fellow sailors lost on that day. Popeye was a Red, White, and Blue killing machine for the Allies.

118 Flavius Julius: "You can't use Bing as default on Firefox."

Well there's the default search engine toolbar switch, and then there's tweaking the guts:

1) In the Address URL, type about:Config
2) In the Filter: keyword area, type keyword.URL
3) Right-click the keyword.URL line
4) From the drop-down menu, select Modify
5) Replace default URL with
http://www.bing.com/search?
sourceid=Mozilla-search&
form=CHROME&q=
(That's all on one line with NO breaks or spaces. Damn you lacewigs and Pixy!)
6) Select OK

Congratulations. You've now made your default search from the GUI utilize Bing.

Need Google back? Re-edit the keyword.URL to
http://www.google.com/search?
ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&
sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&q=
(That's all on one line with NO breaks or spaces. Damn you lacewigs and Pixy!)

119 Google isn't that liberal; after all, they are effectively cornering the market on search, have already garnered 90% of the search advertising, have the most popular mapping program, and are entering the former territories of their former allies (e.g. Android invades iPhone turf), etc. What Google represents is uber capitalism, where capitalism is applied to liberal ideals, instead of liberal ideals relying on socialism or communism. Think about that. Whereas in the past capitalism has been used to further conservative agendas, Google is using capitalism to further liberal agendas. Of course, Google is _not_ the first company to do this; that trail has been blazed by many many other companies, but none of those other companies has had the market presence and market dominance that Google has now. God help us in the next 10 years.
