Gov.Jindal Explains the Failures of Obamacare's Medicaid Expansion
— Gabriel Malor

Gov. Jindal had an excellent piece in Politico Magazine about Obamacare's failures. There's a lot in there (read the whole thing), but the one that sticks out is his observation that the President's signature healthcare law prioritizes health coverage for able-bodied adults over seniors and those with disabilities.

According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, in 2012 more than half a million seniors and people with disabilities on state Medicaid lists were awaiting access to home and community-based services. Prompt access to these services could keep individuals with disabilities out of institutions, which are often more costly.

Yet Obamacare provides states with a much greater federal Medicaid match — 100 percent for the first three years, phasing down to 90 percent over time — to cover previously ineligible low-income individuals. According to the Urban Institute, nearly five in six adults to be covered under the Medicaid expansion are adults without children, most in their prime working years.

In other words, rather than start with the neediest and cover them first, Obamacare's Medicaid expansion goes to other groups. Coincidentally (Gov. Jindal is too nice to say it in his piece, but I will), those are groups that Democrats are most interested in luring to the voting booth.

19 Why am I working? No, seriously, why? Because I feel like a sucker and a fool. I work hard and I make vague attempts at debt reduction and I buy a car that I can afford instead of the one I want and I try to put at least some token amount away for retirement and then I look around and feel like the world's greatest fool for doing all of that. It truly disturbs me how the very concept of work as being a positive good that buttresses human dignity is under attack. Yes, there are times, such as today, when I feel like Sigourney Weaver in Galaxy Quest about my job and my role therein, but, generally, I feel proud that I work and can care for myself. There are many days that I go home and look around my apartment at all the books and clothes and video games and televisions and computers that I own and it hits me, hard, what a miracle it is that I live in a world where I can live on my own and have all of that. Now? Now I am being told by Our Betters that I should be ashamed of that rather than proud. This story will not end well.

I'm not even willing to do that because telling people that a central government body can adminsiter one-sixth of a $14 trillion economy with over three hundred million people is absurd. No one--well, no one this side of Maxine Waters--would argue that the government could deliver gasoline or pasta to the masses in a desirable way. Why, then, is healthcare the big target for the left? Because it makes us dependent on the government in a manner that can be clothed in "compassion."

31 Alex--now is as good a time as any to bring out the Heinlein quote: Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty. This is known as “bad luck.”{/i}

46 I just got back from the UAE.  That is a great example of the end result of government largess, without any mitigation to control the cultural work ethic.

UAE is oil rich with the citizens (only Emerates can be citizens) eligible for government benefits.  Only 10% of the residents are citizens, the rest are ex-pats and servants.

There is a very poor work ethic among the citizens, they might work 10 to 2, 5 days a week, if they work at all.

Most men have a highly developed sense of entitlement, expecting there to always be servants available to wait on them.  This is a role filled almost exclusively by Filipinos. No citizen of the UAE ever works in the service industry.

It is illegal to collect debts from a citizen.  Every 5 years they can petition the government to forgive all of their debt.

The practical results is that Emerate men rarely work, and they all buy very expensive Ferraris and Lambos on credit, then have the government pay off the debt.

48 Democrats create new realities instead of admitting policy failures.  Therefore, it's not a failure of Obamacare that it drives people out of the workforce, because work  (which we thought of as a good thing)   is   now a bad thing and  something to avoid if possible.

84 Part of my indoctrination into the SMOD/LIB movement was the crash of 2008 and  coinciding housing bubble. I had in my 20s assumed SSI was a failed system. I purchased housing, cars, entertainment etc. within my means and saved for the future. Only to see that which I stockpiled to be eaten by the Grasshoppers. WTF is the point? There is no way for me to invest since no rational market pressure can be seen currently to gauge risk. I'll still live better than most in the future because of my decisions. But I will live well below what I could have because of the 52%.

90 Europe has VAT of 20% for most countries. The lower and middle class are taxed far more than in the USA. The Left conveniently ignores this. 20% VAT creates amazing retail prices...I sell product at retail in USA and in Europe. Item that sells for 20 dollars here goes for 30-40 dollars there. And the consumers don't complain. (Well, they do, in that many cannot afford to buy as much.) The point is for all the "free" healthcare, you also end up having less actual consumption.

Wiki describes it as; a "complaint of insomnia or excessive sleepiness related to abnormal synchronization between the 24-hour light–dark cycle and the endogenous circadian rhythms of sleep and wake propensity." Basically, what's going on is this- Human's sleep wake cycle is not exactly 24 hrs. Light is the most efficient way to synch up with the daily 24 hr daylight cycle. If you can't see light, it's harder to synch up. So, if your cycle is, let's say 23 hrs, and it's start looks like this: * And this -------------------------------------- represents the normal 24 hr cycle. This is how it looks: in synch ------------------------- * After a few days: ------------------------ * Some more days: ----------------------- * As you can see, your sleep/wake cycle starts to drift throughout the usual diurnal cycle. Essentially, you're jet lagged all the time except when your cycle drifts into the normal diurnal cycle. Probably, the cure is that strong blue light that Ace was using for seasonal affective disorder a while back.

148 Good. Grand jury won't indict man who shot Texas deputy DALLAS A Central Texas man who shot and killed a sheriff's deputy entering his home will not be charged with capital murder, attorneys said Thursday. A local grand jury declined Wednesday to indict Henry Goedrich Magee for the Dec. 19 death of Burleson County Sgt. Adam Sowders, who was part of a group of investigators executing a search warrant for Magee's rural home. Sowders and other officers entered the home about 90 miles northwest of Houston without knocking just before 6 a.m. Authorities were looking for guns and marijuana. Magee's attorney, Dick DeGuerin, said his client thought he was being burglarized, reached for a gun and opened fire. DeGuerin has acknowledged his client had a small number of marijuana plants and seedlings, as well as guns he owned legally. The grand jury did indict Magee for possession of marijuana while in possession of a deadly weapon, a third-degree felony. "This was a terrible tragedy that a deputy sheriff was killed, but Hank Magee believed that he and his pregnant girlfriend were being robbed," DeGuerin said in an interview Thursday. Go ahead. Keep up with the no-knocks for petty bullshit and this will keep happening.

Her ass in those tights caught my attention more than the zipper faux pas.

But this way, Ghey Football Player gets to complain about Teh Haterz and scream "ZOMG, bigotz!" if he's drafted low. I know it's hard to think like a deranged Liberal, but there you go.

166 Anywhere from fourth to seventh round until this. I don't know if all the draft gurus are gonna start moving him down or just ignore the news. There will be pre-draft workouts and camps where the media swarm him, I'm sure.

168 Robinson was openly discriminated against not for any character flaw, lack of intellect or talent, or even physical disability, but for the color of his skin alone. I am hardly a raving supporter of gay rights (nor do I rage against them) but comparing the discrimination based upon race to that against one's personal behavior is a bridge too far. While we aren't supposed to be discriminatory we are supposed to be discriminating, and the inability of so many to understand (or care about) the difference is disturbing.

If the government wants to go all Ruby Ridge on citizens who own practical firearms, I don't think there really is anything that I can do about it.

But until that time, I'm of a mind to just go out and get whatever I can in any manner I can, and the laws be damned.

With all the laws and regulations on the books, we're all felons of some sort or another anyways.

172 I'm with the people who really have no opinion regarding "gay" behavior within the privacy of personal actions, but the arrogance of demanding civil rights is just nonsense and, frankly, demeaning to those who have had to fight for the right to vote. Females finally achieved the right to vote. How many "gays" have been denied voting rights? Beyond ensuring that each citizen has the right to vote, my support for any type of social/fashion nonsense is nil.

You want a firearm?  Go buy whatever suits your need.

All you are doing by that action is exercising a right affirmed by the Constitution.

Government permission is not required to exercise this or any other enumerated right.

And I fucking DEFY anyone to prove differently.

175 I can not believe Jeb would win the GOP primary.

Posted by: votermom at February 10, 2014 11:55 AM (HomnR)

I find it incredibly hard to believe as well, given that Jeb Bush has nothing in his background or public statements that sets him apart from any other former governor with a fairly decent (but not extraordinary or even notable) record. I'm sure that, like his father and brother, Jeb Bush is a good man with stolid character and good intentions, but there is little to lift him above the ordinary, and you better believe we'll need a great deal better than ordinary and nice to defeat Hillary in 2016.

I mean, look at the guy. Listen to him. Soft and moderate and respectable, Jeb Bush reminds me of a branch manager of a small town bank, a member of the Lions Club and the Moose Lodge and the local chamber of commerce, not the guy I would tap to lead the fight against the commie bastards attempting to the tear down the Republic. I can't imagine this guy fighting anyone over anything. There's no there there.

176 This is close to a point that I've been making for quite awhile. I have a relative who is profoundly disabled, and though I don't know details of his support, I have to conclude that a lot of his costs are covered through government programs. All this "reform" necessarily diverts resources from him - someone who not only cannot take care of himself, but also needs skilled care in order to live - and diverts it to people who often are just too lazy to take care of their own lives. Of course, this relative of mine can't vote because of his disability, so when it comes down to who's important, we know he's not it, and moreso, probably listed in the HHS book of "useless eaters".

177 It's the age old adage: Follow the money. Which of the three groups listed has money that the government can take? Seniors? They are mostly on Social Security. Disabled? They don't work much, so no, here too. Ah! The middle aged folks. Not too much money, but worth taking. Go Obamatax!!!!

Posted by: TimothyJ at February 10, 2014 11:39 AM (ep2io)

178 There is no failure. The sole purpose of Obamacae is to take all that money from those 'rich' white people who are wasting it extending their lives for a few more months and transferring to his homeboys for a few more fore-tays and choome.

179 Go read Ezekiel Emanuel's (Rahm's brother) article in the Lancet "Principles for Allocation of Scarce Medical Interventions", also known as "The Complete Lives System." Emanuel is a medical ethicist who provided the ethical foundation in the ACA for dealing with medical shortages, whether organs, or equipment, or hospital space, or personnel: whatever.

In it, infants and elderly are placed at the back of the line. Always. Infants because society hasn't invested much in them, so there is no great loss when they die; the elderly because they have little opportunity to repay any medical investment made in them and their well-being.

Remember this the next time you hear "it's for the children." Death - that's what they have in mind for the children. And the elderly.

Here is the article. It's only 7 pages long:
