This appears to be the meme.  They're grabbing on to this because they know the bill is a huge, smelly pile of shit.  "It's all okay though," they explain, "we'll get it fixed in time."

My local rag ran an editorial a few days ago that essentially said that the bill is crap, but they should pass it anyway.

I commented that the editorial staff was obviously retarded.

At least Harkin is being honest about the philosophical differences between the two sides.  Harkin thinks health care is a "right", I guess just like free speech, assembly and religion.  Except those latter rights don't cost me a dime.  You can exercise your right to free speech all day long and I don't have to pay a cent to subsidize it or actualize that right.

Not so with "health care".  I will pay and pay and pay for your "right" to get a mammogram or CT Scan or prostate exam.  Doctors don't work for free and those expensive pieces of medical equipment aren't going to pay for themselves.

See the difference, Senator Harkin?  Now, please stop bastardizing our political language and lets deal with the debate honestly: as a way to ration a scarce good in the best possible way.

I can concur with the distinguished gentleman's opinion of "Tommy the Commie" as a resident of the Tall Corn State. Watched him swing to the right every time he runs, and it seems no one notices, every time. Voted against this guy 4 times now, still he pulls in the 60's. Grassley is much better (notice I didn't say perfect).

And the pussies in the Iowa GOP never bother to run a serious challenger, because his decades in Washington give him seniority on committees that throw a lot of pork dollars back to Iowa. 

(I don't think this is an Iowa-specific problem; I didn't know anyone was challenging Herb Kohl in 2006 until I saw the sample ballot because the WI GOP didn't bother to do any publicity in the Milwaukee area.)
