Health Care Stuff
— Ace

So, Nelson sold out. But we have a little bit of hope on two fronts: Stupak in the House is claiming he'll refuse to vote for a bill with his no-abortion-funding language gutted from it, as is the case with the Senate bill.

Meanwhile, the progressives in the House could create trouble too: exono, who seems to know what he's talking about, holds out the hopes that the Progressive Caucus, the biggest in the House, will in fact insist upon some form of public option in the House bill. If the conference bill contains anything like that, Lieberman walks.

Heather Radish highlights this snarky headline by Jake Tapper about the president's "unprecedented" progress on both global warming and health care.

Headline: President Obama Heralds as "Significant Progress" Unpopular Compromise on Health Care Bill, Non-Binding Climate Change Accord

Although Tapper never was in the bag for Obama (at least not in his reporting), I think the fact ABCNews allows him this much snark at Captain Perfect's expense indicates the bloom is officially off the rose.

And why? Well, not because he offended so many conservatives and moderates (including those who voted for him) in pursuing an avowedly left-wing agenda after promising (with the media vouching for him) to govern as a centrist. Those folks got upset over the long hot (well, not so hot -- global warming made it cooler than usual) summer and the media not only refused to credit them with a point, they insulted them with puerile sexual put-downs.

No, the media is now willing to be a bit agnostic about The God Who Walks because the one cadre of people in America whose opinions actually count -- the left wing -- is now griping about him.

Some system we have, eh? The left is not just the permanently privileged voice in politics, deciding solely amongst themselves when it is appropriate to have a dollop of skepticism about a president and which positions are "centrist" and "common sense" in politics -- of course they have a privileged voice; the media is itself left -- but we're finding out increasingly that voice is not merely privileged, but solitary.

No other voices or opinions count.

It's only now, at this precise moment, that the left has itself a snit, that it's permissible to question the divinity of The God Who Walks.

I Guess... I shouldn't say the left is having a "snit," as if their feelings are unreasonable. The God Who Walks promised everything to everybody, one promise contradicting another, and the media let him get away with it and papered over the incongruities in his "agenda" in order to sell him to the public, in any way possible. You want a hard leftist? Okay, he's a hard leftist. You want a centrist? Okay, he's that too. You want a conservative? Okay, in away, he's the "conservative with common sense" in this race.

I mean, after all -- he's going to cut your taxes (of course he will, darling) and personally put Osama bin Ladin's ass in a sling. He's that hard-core, you know.

And of course there are a large pile of promises that can't be fulfilled, and the left, too, is now realizing this guy just pretty much says anything and the media falls over itself to cover up for him.

"Just words"? Indeed, Just Words.

Oh: DC's also getting hit with snow so it seems the Christmas Eve goal is out of reach. But this monster will be back soon.

6 The term MSM should be retired since the media is not mainstream.

7 I never say MSM anymore. I stopped saying it six months ago when Bernie Goldberg pointed it out it credited them with a lie. I say media or big media or left-wing media or the like. I don't know why anyone says MSM anymore, and I get sort of annoyed when they do, that they haven't gotten the memo.

Posted by: ace at December 19, 2009 03:56 PM (/4E2O)

8 "the media" is only two letters longer than "the MSM." Really no reason to say MSM anymore, ever. They're not mainstream. FoxNews, while it tilts a little to the right, tilts less to the right than the estabilshment liberal media tilts to the left. FoxNews is more deserving of "MSM" than the legacy media. Really annoys me that people still say that.

Posted by: ace at December 19, 2009 03:58 PM (/4E2O)

9 I say MSM sarcastically. I know it is the Left Stream Media or the Dem Stream Media. Plus, it is still the main stream by which things are heard and recognized as "news".

10 Funny... I stopped having hope that this thing wasn't a pre-ordained rigged event as of waking this morning and finding yet another Dem caved lacking any real principles. I'll believe any of these other bastards when they actually _do_ what they threaten. Until then, they are all in the tank. Not like my believing them or not will affect their behavior. But I refuse to believe any of them has the least bit of principle.

16 ...and now the Chinese are saying that Obamawama cannot sell more US Treasury notes because the world at large has no more money with which to buy more US debt.  Probably unspoken by the Chinese "Obamawama hasn't even the economic clout to pay the interest in his current debt increases".

This significantly is not good, if true, because Obamawama has only one other choice: inflate the US currency like his mentor Mugabe did with Zimbabwe (which means the former Rhodesia without any visible means to produce goods and services from the former breadbasket of Africa as a whole).

Just run the money presses continuously. If Obamawama has to feel bad about his Marxist failures, he can simply take down The United States of America, its people, and its economy, leaving only a smoking, stinking hulk of proto-Marxist failure.  Just print more money, without any backing.  Yep, Obamawamma with teach the non-believers in Marxist supremacy with the end result of his nasty machinations.

It is significant that Obamawama has yet to institute his corps of Brownshirts, you know, as well funded and trained as the US military.  We might yet survive.

That is the best of ideas. It's high time to Go Galt. Conservatives always repeat the joke of not being able to demonstrate because they have jobs. How about if they didn't show up? And not just call in, but fill the streets (sans parade permit) and keep the leftards from getting to work also? That would get attention. If it kept up for long enough it would get results. Nothing like the economy coming to a grinding halt to get the attention of those who live off taxes. Frankly, I don't think conservatives will ever take ACTION. Instead they'll rattle on about taking back the Republican Party for the next election. As if the next election is not already fixed. Why do you think the Deathocrats are acting as if they don't have a care in the world? Well, maybe they don't. It's time to hit the streets and raise a fuss. It's time to starve the monster. But, conseratives never will.

23 Please clear something up for me. From what I understand, when the bill comes back from conference, it doesn't matter if Lieberman walks because the Senate only needs fifty votes to pass the bill then. So basically all they'll do is submit the House bill to the Senate because they can get fifty votes no problem since the filibuster can't be used on a conference bill. Is that right?

Just out of curiosity I went to jobsearch.usajobs.gov the other day and queried the mother of all teets by typing my zip code with a 20 mile search radius.  The results?  318 Fed. Gov't. job listings within 20 miles of Albuquerque.

I saw a little article about the promised # of jobs vs. the actual number since stimulus passed.  ND was the only state not to lose jobs.  If you don't count DC too.  It gained jobs.  Shocker there.

We conservatives need to economically shut down as much as possible. Stop spending money on anything that is not absolutely neccesary. Food and fuel, that is it. No going out to eat stay home. No going out to the bars have friends over. No going to the movies stay home and read a book or chase the little women around.

Also switch to cash as much as possible and keep it out of the bank. There are two reasons for this, first the government will not be able to know how much you have on hand and second when inflation kicks in you want to be able to get ahold of it and spend it as fast as possible.

Next get a list of friends together that you can trade work with or can fix things for you pay them in cash. When at all possible do bussiness in cash, it will help small businesses keep more money off the books and help starve the government of tax revenue.

Obama is counting on being able to use the billions of extra Tarp money right before the election. We need to force him to spend it now and we need to be suck it up and not let him show anything for it.

If you run a small business purge it of any know Democrat supporters as quietly as possible. Find excuses, if you have computers at your business get someone to help you distract them and then put porn on their computers, then document that and fire them. If you need to hire new employees don't advertise but instead go to the local conservative groups and social network there.

Posted by: Al Gore at December 19, 2009 08:10 PM (tDm8K) ~~~~~~~~ That is incorrect. There are 4 cloture votes before the bill can be signed by Obama. All cloture votes require 60 votes. First cloture is on Monday for the manager's amendment. Second is Tuesday for the budget points of the bill. Third is on Wednesday to end all debate on the bill. And then it goes to conference committee where the Senate and House have to come together--somehow--for a final bill. Nothing that isn't already in either the Senate version or the House version can be added to the final bill--which means, no more bribes (important in that Stupak and others can't be bought off with this bill). If it's reconciled in conference committee somehow, it goes to the House for a final vote (and either the Progressive Caucus will vote for it or bilk because of the lack of public option and abortion restrictions, or the pro-choice caucus--around 30-40 with Stupak--bilk because of the lack of abortion restriction). And then it goes to the Senate where either they add a public option and piss off Lieberman and the others such as Landrieu, Lincoln, or they strip the abortion amendment and piss off Nelson. The vote in the Senate is considered a new bill and can be filibustered, requiring the final 4th cloture vote.

69 One point --
Politics is not like a football match where both sides ply by the same rules. Politics is not fair and not symmetrical. The let has a natural advantage in this country because it pits the haves against the have-nots. By definition there are more have-nots. In a democracy that can be a fatal flaw that the USA has managed to survive for a long time, but there is no guarantee.

Ace lamenting the unfairness of the situation is like cursing the tide.

We need to understand what forces we can use to counteract the natural tendency to socialize (education, upward mobility, science, religion, etc.) and use them more effectively. The left knows what their best tools are and are using them to great effect.

76 I don't know how typical my experience is of the Obama era, but it's been incredibly corrosive in my own (white, college-educated, surburban) life. I lost two good friendships over the past two years and am barely on speaking terms with my own brother after being publicly called a racist by my sister-in-law. And my last serious girlfriend, who I lived with and almost married, was black. Apparently I hate black people so much I occasionally fall in love with them. I'm incredibly angry and incredibly frustrated since my very heartfelt grievances get written off as just more proof of my racism. Rational discussion has been impossible.

I'm trying to not take it personally, but I do. A long-time friendship with a college buddy ended when he excused Bill Ayers' terrorism as no worse than my own father's military service in Vietnam. My father had housed and fed this friend of mine many times over the years. I went ballistic and demanded an apology ... which never came. I can forgive a lot of my liberal friends, but that was just beyond the pale.

Sad thing is, it's my older or more blue-collar Democrat relatives I can still talk to about politics. I come from a midwest Democrat family. It's my better-off NPR class friends and, sadly, family members where I get personally vilified for not liking Obama. So just on a personal, human relationship level the Obama era has been a disaster for my life. It just sucks.

79 The interesting thing is this... after conference committee, if the House passes it, the Senate has only two options: accept the bill or reject it. That's it. If the House approves it, I don't see the Senate approving it short of more Dems caving, or Republicans flipping (Hag Twins of Maine Powers Activate--form of historic orgasm!). But if Republicans and some Dems in the Senate can filibuster the bill, the entire bill in both houses is dead and they have to start over from the very beginning.

94 I like the idea of firing lefty employees  and hiring conservatives from 51. I'm a founder of a working band and I had two lefty types and I fired them, not only because of their views, but that was certainly part of it.  The other problem was deeper and perhaps why they were leftist dweebs. They always wanted something for nothing. Always wanting an equal share while not providing equal commitment and dedication, and trying to push the envelope with me for money like union organizers.

They went from making a decent living to practically begging like the rest of the unemployed musicians.

I'm sorry to hear that.  I have lost 1 friend, a liberal who could not forgive that I voted for Mccain/Palin. This person was a good friend, we both started our businesses at ard the same time years ago. We shared the same struggles, etc

I have no regrets, being a democrat myself for over 2 decades, I have many friends in the military & I could not forgive what he ,the marxist, said about our US military, and I realised this man in the WH is one of the worst presidents I have ever seen in my life, and this is comning from someone who went to DC to protest against Bush.

I basically have gotten to the point, if a person is a liberal, I have no respect for them anymore, and this I find shocking since I was more on the liberal side until 2008. But self preservation can do that to you.

Don't worry about it, if they were people who you wanted to stay friends with, they will come ard in the next few months as the country unravels some more.

But if you are like me, who is basically at the point of saying good riddance, than the way I figure, life's too short, and I really don't want to waste time with people who refuse to see what that marxist is doing to this country.  THe centerists and moderates see this, but the liberals are a gone case.

112 shibumi, I definitely feel your pain, having had an elderly grandparent die recently after a long and drawn out illness that depleted her bank account.

I have worries of my own about this monstrosity. I just spent $40K and four years putting myself through school to be a respiratory therapist. I can tell you that every hospital I've worked at (I work in Detroit) is in fiscal dire straits b/c the bulk of their patients are medicare and medicaid patients. The coming cuts to those programs combined with millions of more patients being funneled into those programs means EVERY hospital is going to be in significant trouble. Not just cause they certainly will not be able to eat the extra cost, but because there simply are not enough doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals to go around NOW, much less when we put bring so many new patients in the fold. I DID NOT spend this much time, energy, and money to be a professional healthcare worker only to be paid what the clerk at the DMV is paid.

165 Going Galt isn't really the same as a general strike.  It's a lot more like not choosing to participate in their scheme.  For example, the Galt's Gulch crowd used their own money (gold coins, of course).  That's a bit extreme, but I'd imagine we can come up with something close.

Barter is still recognized by the IRS as taxable commerce.  In a bizarre way, but taxable.  My guess is there is a crack on the door having to do with barter, commodity gold and silver, and other trade goods.  When they begin cracking down on specific goods, the way they do with alcohol, for example, then that's time to crack back.

It's no secret that the Dems would rather not have to vote for this but the pressure for the WH and Reid is apparently too much right now. Given that Obama's numbers continue to slide, and that a final vote won't be until sometime in late January at the earliest, is it possible that there are some out there (Dems) that are hoping this is somehow derailed? Is it possible that another dismal UE report or two combined with Obama's sliding numbers, not to mention the looming 2010 primaries (and the lack of hard Dec. 25 deadline), might buck up their spines enough to kill it? It's possible I guess that there could be a conference fight that gives the some type of political cover to vote no. Maybe too much to hope for.

It's possible I guess that there could be a conference fight that gives the some type of political cover to vote no. Maybe too much to hope for. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ The pressure is pretty high on all the Dems to pass the bill, regardless of what is in it, in order for Obama to get the Rose Garden bill signing photo-op before the State of the Union. Obama, Reid, and Pelosi do not care what is in the bill... they just want A bill at all cost. The fight is coming from everyone else who has to hear it from their constituents that they voted for a piece of shit bill. There ARE Dems who are, at least right now, silently hoping that the bill gets derailed because it is a POS that isn't what they wanted. I mean, even unions, liberal lobbying organizations, and pro-abortion organizations are saying, "Kill this crap NOW." I mean, Dems have a super majority and this is the best they can pass? It's unfathomable to them. By all counts of logic, they SHOULD be passing single-payer and free abortions for all. But, because Rahm Emmanuel fought for power over substance (having to back Blue Dogs), their super majority is tainted... which means concessions. Depending on what happens in conference committee, there is a slight chance that the ultra libs will simply buck Pelosi. Unless she's down to threatening their life, I can foresee an all out revolt by the Progressive Caucus against Pelosi if she makes them vote for a non-public option bill that blocks abortions. The longer this bill sits in Congress, the more questions are asked, and the more obvious the flaws start popping up. It becomes even more incredibly harder to keep stiff backs of support for it--which is why they're trying to cram it through as fast as possible. Lieberman, Bayh, Nelson, Lincoln, Landrieu, Stupak, etc, are going to be watching the conference committee closely. Reid promised Nelson that there would not be major depatures from the Senate bill, so if he lied and they do... Nelson "supposedly" is not going to vote for it. But I honestly do not see how Pelosi can get past the Progressive Caucus without a public option of some form and with the existing Stupak abortion amendment. And if they do put in a public option, and remove the abortion amendment, the Senate Democrats are going to revolt. So if they want the bill, one side is going to have to cave in to the other without further financial bribes in this bill (since nothing can be added.) I honestly believe that the bill will pass the Senate on Christmas Eve and head into conference committee--short of an ultra-lib bucking Nelson's abortion bribe. From there, it's going to be another entire battle, and if some of the bribes are revoked, it's going to fail miserably.

195 I appreciate the words of encouragement. It's just the personal vitriol from the Left took me by surprise. Some of these relationships might be dead forever, but the family ones I really need to figure out how to repair.

And I know the general rule about talking politics, but I *like* talking politics. I always have. The friendships I lost weren't casual friendships, they were good friendships. People I went on roadtrips with, and chased girls with, had serious talks with .. stayed up all night in college playing video games with. They  crashed on my couch, invited me to their weddings. These were some of my best friends. If I can't talk politics with them, who can I talk politics with?

And somehow we could talk through disagreements during the Clinton and Bush years, but not with Obama. They hated Bush, said horrible things (especially the girlfriends and wives), and I just sort of laughed it off. But I criticize Obama and all off a sudden the "racist" label starts getting thrown around.

I realize we just grew apart as friends. They moved to NYC for work, while I worked the suburbs throughout DC, Virginia and NC. So our peer groups changed. Still it was something about Obama that brought everything to a head, past disagreements that could be laughed off over a beer all of a sudden became intensely personal.

And I'm a live-and-let-live libertarian style Republican, I'm not a preachy guy. I want free trade, free enterprise, limited govt, and a big-ass military. Ok, I'd also like it if we didn't kill so many babies, so I guess I'm pro-life, but I'm not preachy about it.

Perhaps part of this is that I thought I was part of the NPR class. I've lived and worked much of my life in college towns and govt towns. And I like those places. I like having good music and free museums around. I like wine bars and cute girls. I like earnestly artsy community centers with painting classes and dance classes and guitar classes. I love Charlottesville and Chapel Hill and Athens. I like Georgetown and Old Town Alexandria. (The common denominator to all this might be 20-something girls now that I think about it.)

I guess the Obama era, and consequent severed friendships, has made me realize that the places that I like most ... kind of hate me. Which sucks.

So part of this is just me not knowing where I belong anymore. I'm not a religious guy despite my pro-life beliefs and Catholic upbringing. So I doubt church will help.

yes, I do visit HillBuzz often, yes I read their post and the comments on that thread, a lot of ex-dems or still centerist dems feel that way.

The thing is, Bush never really fought back agn what the fringe-media did to him, I know I know he did sorta fight back and he was busy protecting the country. But they let the lunatics in the radical lefty hammer him without any bounds, and that hurt Bush.

But with the Bush bashing, I as a no fan of Bush were lumped in with the daily Kos crowd, so when the Bush bashing was going on, there was no distinction between the radical america hating left, and those who just didn't like Bush.

So, when Hillary ran, these same lunatics unleashed on Hillary, and this is when I saw what you conservatives were saying about the lunatic radical left, and I realised wow, there are actually people, americans, who hate america that much. I must admit it never occured to me, one b/c I never saw it agn a democrat who I was supporting and two I was still watching & reading what I call the fringe media.

So, now, I realise how much Bush was lied about, I realise there is no media, they are all just tools of the radical left, and I say this as a former howard dean voting lefty (VERY very sorry for this vote)

after 2008 the fringe media really has no idea that their fascade of credibility is gone. and as HB pointed out, the radical america hating left is the now the face of the party of democrats, and they have NO clue how damaging the brand is becomning.

210 Remember, the House bill passed 220-215. Some ultra-libs (such as Kucinich) voted with the Republicans to kill the bill due to the passage of the Stupak Amendment. Stupak and his pro-life caucus voted for the bill. Pelosi can only afford to lose 2 votes (she needs 218 to pass). If there is no public option (which the House bill had), there goes more ultra-liberals--way more than 2. And if it doesn't have the Stupak amendment in it blocking abortion, there goes the pro-life caucus--again, way more than 2. She has to find some balance in the conference committee to not lose a lot of votes, and while I think it is improbable for her to reconcile a bill to pass, it's not impossible. She could potentially force people to vote for it with promises that they'll make changes after the fact in future bills--bit if they believe that, they're stupid and deserve to be lampooned.

217 To further my point, check out this NRO article: http://tinyurl.com/y9xgps3 The Blue Dog coalition has 52 members, 38 of whom voted against the House health-care bill (the 39th Dem nay came from Dennis Kucinich). The House Progressive Caucus has 83 members, 64 of whom have pledged to vote against any bill that lacks a strong public option. Let's say the absence of a public option wins the votes of all 38 Blue Dogs. The Democrats could then only afford to lose 40 of the 64 progressives who said they wouldn't vote for such a bill, and both co-chairs of the Progressive Caucus have fired shots across the Senate's bow indicating that such defections are not just possible but likely. Pelosi has been pretty good so far at getting the votes she needs, but the math looks encouraging, and that's before factoring in abortion, taxes, and other differences in the Reid legislation that might fracture the coalition that passed the House bill. ~~~~~~ And, again, Pelosi only has a 2-vote margin if she wants the bill to pass. She's going to have to get some blue dog / pro-life dems that voted against the bill, or she's going to have to keep some ultra-libs from deflecting if there's no public option by any means necessary.

218 - I'm from NY and had visited Austin. The moonbats are just different. Like they recently had a homeless advocate woman die of exposure in the streets that alot of the moonbats thought was just a wonderful person they'd all miss lots, etc. except she was batshit insane and nobody invited her to live with them.

Anyhow, great BBQ there and they could use your votes.

I was jsut discussing this with my dem friends who want this whole shitty thing dead and gone@!

ok... have a public option, and the senators don't vote, and 60 votes are needed here.  don't have public option, and the house liberals don't vote for it.

these 2 things are so different on the opposite side of spectrums, there is no middle grd.

and even if they negotiate as much as they can, saying .. oh well we'll add to it later, the public polls as of last week were 57% against doing anything (Rassumesum poll, the only one I trust), and the number will only go higher b/c now the liberals hate this too, it will be over 70% agn this shitty bill.

I mean, this thing is a disaster, a fking disaster. people who are nonpolitical are just seething mad right now, I know people who voted for the marxists who are LIVID!!  and this anger is just growing.

223 I guess the Obama era, and consequent severed friendships, has made me realize that the places that I like most ... kind of hate me. Which sucks.

So part of this is just me not knowing where I belong anymore. I'm not a religious guy despite my pro-life beliefs and Catholic upbringing. So I doubt church will help.

About finding out that the places you like(d) kind of hate you: happens to a lot of us who went to grad school. Even more if it was an Ivy school; been there, done that. As for church: if you look around, you can usually find a congregation where you can make some new friends who won't reject you over politics. Most will be fellow conservatives, but what's not to like about that? My church has become a haven for me since last year. Regarding your own religious beliefs: relax and let God handle it-- He's very patient with the hurt, the lonely, the doubting, yes, and even the despairing.

Posted by: johnc_recent_EX-democrat at December 19, 2009 10:31 PM (ACkhT) ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Pretty much, yes. The abortion restrictions and the lack of the public option (or medicare buy-in) in the Senate has pretty much a large contingent of liberals (and lobbying organizations) beyond fuming. I find it entertaining to go read liberal websites, and they're pretty much in melt-down over the Nelson bribes today. So, even though this bill passes the Senate on Christmas Eve--and I believe it will, unless an ultra-lib is staying silent to buck Reid (which is possible... Feingold voted against the Defense authorization bill today when pretty much all Republicans voted for it)--it's not over by a long shot. Liberals won't accept a bill with no public option, and a bill that restricts abortion, which means Obama's poll numbers will crash when it should be getting a boost.

It's possible that he will not vote for it if it does not contain Stupak's abortion restrictions--since he is pro-life. Outside of that, Cao was bribed with commitments that have yet to become real, and he indicated that he would not have voted for it regardless if he was the 218th vote (he wasn't, he voted at the last minute and he was 220).

Posted by: RarestRX at December 19, 2009 10:49 PM (rmNST) ~~~~~~~~~~ The Ping Pong option considered is where the Senate passes its bill, and the House immediately takes up that bill without ANY changes, and votes for it. And yes, that's off the table. There is absolutely no way Pelosi can pass the current pending Senate bill without changes. It's definitely going to conference committee. How much it's changed in the committee is up in the air, and will determine whether or not the bill can pass in either the House, or get past a filibuster in the Senate.

@78, @199 Bobbo....

You are sooooo not alone.  Many of us have your same basic oreintation,  "history" and background and have been experiencing similar relationship problems with family members and also with (formerly) good friends, co-workers, neighbors, etc., within the past year or so...

Yes, it hurts...but nothing ever stays the same for long. Things will eventually change again.  In the meantime, all you can do is to stand your ground  and be willing to "not rub it in" when some of these now estranged people try to make amends later on.

Meanwhile, be open to developing new relationships.  There are a lot of quality people out there so be willing to give the new ones a chance. You may find that you don't miss the others nearly as much.  And when the time is right, the old relationships will heal., if it is meant to be...

In the dead of night I write:

You'd think I would be a raging, blind, used-car-salesman sucker/lib since my husband died because of an inept doctor who bowed to the insurance company and his own wallet. I could have been a real sob story for Obama's shameless manipulations.

But I have more than a half ounce of sense. I'm not so 'x'ist to blame an entire industry or all doctors for the sins of one. I have the wisdom of having learned through separate experiences that the bad one was a horrible anomaly. I have the experience and wisdom to know that government intervention much, much, much more often destroys or depresses what works. Dems "fix" healthcare? Probably as well as they could restore my husband's life. I blame that doctor, and I sued his ass off.

And my husband died after having voted for Bush, but he never got to see the outcome thanks to fucking Algore. He must be turning in his grave.

Posted by: UncleZeb at December 19, 2009 11:38 PM (Fgu3H)

There is this "nuclear option", but it would require Reid to either merge it with a budget bill, to call it a budget bill or to say "fuck it, the rules don't apply to Democrats."

I really don't think any of those is likely, so the alternative is a whole new set of bribes when the real bill comes up.

I've said before that the best outcome for most elected Democrats is to be on record supporting the bill and then have it fail.  Just barely.  Due to wascally Wepublicans.  I do think that Lieberman and Landrieu and Nelson and Webb think that they can pull this shit out of the fire at the last minute, with some pretext to object to it.

What I hope these Democrat weasels are finding out is that this is a lot bigger than standard run-of-the-mill pork barrel politics and their voters won't be assuaged by trinkets.

Posted by: AmishDude at December 19, 2009 08:28 PM (Vo2Ef)

242 Meh, I've come to peace with it all.  We're going to be screwed by the Dems and at the end, in a couple of years, folks will not be happy to see the huge unemployment and inflation.

And then they will look for a conservative to swing us back.

But really, my "God Who Walks" is one who actually walked amongst us a couple K years ago, and he would have swept through our congress with a whip and righteous fury like He did the money changers in the temple.

244 @78, @199 Bobbo,

I have been around actors musicians and entertainers most of my adult life and so obviously most of my friends and associates are liberals.  I've also lived in foreign countries, Egypt and Switzerland. It was in Egypt where I became political and had various epiphanies about things like Socialism vs. capitalism , cultural relativism, Arabs/Jews, Muslim fundamentalism, and the media (seeing Ayatolla Khomeni's Face as Time's man-of -the-year on newsstands in Cairo got me started - and I never stopped). I've had many debates and discussions with Arabs and anti-American European dolts.

It took me a long time to understand the best way to deal with them.

There are types it is just stupid to argue with. They are not interested in facts or logic. Leave them to their own ignorance.

In the case of when they keep asserting themselves (this is a psychological need they are demanding agreement and they WANT a chance to call someone a racist or whatever) You can shut them up by asking questions and being very thick-skinned. If the exchange takes place in your home, then they in all politeness should not be insulting their host, use that subtly.  Likewise if you are their guest, you should politely and humbly defer and if they get nasty then you can  say "well, if I am a racist to you, you really shouldn't be giving me all this hospitality. I certainly don't invite racists to my home."

Again, don't get angry!

Always get definitions from them. They THRIVE on having a separate definitions for "Republican" "Racist" etc. They LOVE labels...call them on it. What is a racist, how do you define racism? If their definition is broad (how convenient) ask them about certain Democrats who fall into their definition and ask calmly well then does that make Bill Clinton a "racist"?

It is important to let every insult roll off. They are trying to bait you whether they know it or not. (took me a long time to get this)

Asking questions and assuming a neutral stance is very effective. Don't defend...ask questions. "George Bush is an idiot." "Ok, what makes him an idiot?"  "You don't know?" They ask increduous. "Sure, I've heard that before, but what is it that he's said or done, is it the way he talks?"  Etc.  Try to understand the assumptions behind their position and ask questions. Again don't take anything they say personally. Even though they are being unfair and at times despicable, think of them like children who can't help it.

Always get them to explain WHY they believe something and keep asking questions.

Learn logical fallacies. This way you won't be fodder for the rhetoric.  Most leftists arguments are replete with logical fallacies and  if you don't catch them you will have a much harder time and the discussion will get heated which is where you lose/damage friendships.(I don't blame you for getting pissed off - I have many times, but it's not effective).

Do not accept their premises, which are usually false. They often slip them in and if you don't catch them you are tacitly agreeing and you have lost all standing to rebut. Challenge the premise first before you get into the content.

Incidentally there is a very good example of some of this on my website with a video of a discussion/debate on global warming between Lord Moncton and a greenpeace supporter.

Good luck!
