Hollywood's Most Sucktastic Investments
— Gabriel Malor

Forbes did a little math to determine which Hollywood stars haven't been pulling in audiences in numbers proportional to their salaries. They looked at the 100 best-paid stars who were in at least three films in the past five years that opened in more than 500 theaters. (Whew.) Then:

We added up each star's compensation on his or her last three films and the operating income on those films and divided total operating income by the star's total compensation to come up with each return-on-investment number.

So they only look back at three films in the past five years. Kinda arbitrary, but right off the bat you know that this is going to be a list of actors who have fallen hard. I figured Eddie Murphy would be number 1 on the list.

It's after the jump, so you don't have to click through fifteen frickin' slow-loadin' pages to see them all. Click over if you want to see the slide show and know how much each of their films made per dollar salary to the actor. Everybody else: 10. Jim Carrey

9. Samuel L. Jackson (I actually can't remember what he's been in recently except Iron Man. Oops, is that still a spoiler/secret?)

8. Leonardo DiCaprio

7. Drew Barrymore (Isn't she directing now?)

6. Tom Cruise

5. Ice Cube (Wanna-be Eddie Murphy.)

4. Eddie Murphy (I really thought he'd be number one. I mean Pluto Nash?!? What was he thinking?!?)

3. Billy Bob Thornton (Eh?)

2. Ewan McGregor (Actually, what has he been in lately?)

1. Will Ferrell (The only thing I've seen him in is Stranger Than Fiction. It was good. I would rather stab my own eyes out than watch one of his comedies, though.)

3 I don't get the Leo DiCaprio or the Ewan McGregor lists.

McGregor's latest film is "The Men Who Stare At Goats".  You know, now that Obama is President, the Iraq war is comedy fodder.

Everyone of the assholes on this list is a nobody next to the old stars.  OK Cruise does a pretty good job.  See any John Wayne's in this group?  Or Errol Flynn's?  These people do TV shows that show up on a big screen. Can you spell shallow?

Ice Cube? WTF is that?  This is a joke right, there is some MFer called Ice Cube that is an actor?

Is he  Shaft's love child?

Ferrell: Bewitched. Land of the Lost. Semi-Pro. Blades of Glory.

I'm actually surprised to see Eddie Murphy on here since the Shrek films do motherfucking gangbusters.

26 This list seems about right. At first I was surprised Adrian Brody wasn't there but I don't think anyone pays him to act anymore. Ice Cube maybe shouldn't be on the list as he can't actually act or anything. His salary is a large part of what the movie makes but it's the only large part, the rest is leftovers. His films are keyed to a certain market and never really meant to do more than earn a modest, but guaranteed. return.

I can't believe the Drew B fans here though. She's a thoroughly repulsive person and can't act worth a lick either.

Posted by: Rocks at November 19, 2009 08:40 PM (cqSxb)

27 How could Ben Affleck not be on that list? It's impossible. He was paid $10-20 million a pop for losers like 'Gigli', 'Pearl Harbor' , 'Daredevil', the excellent but unpopular 'Hollywoodland', etc. I was one of the 5 people that saw 'Gigli' and I watched it only out of morbid curiosity. I needed a bottle of Thunderbird to muddle through it. How could he not be on that list? What movie of his has made money since 'Good Will Hunting'? And how could Shia LaBoeuf be the best value in Hollywood? "Eagle Eye"? Did anyone see that expensive headache inducing phantasmagoria but me? James Cameron is prepared to demonstrate that one doesn't need to have highly paid actors to lose tens of millions on a film. He is planning to use expensive CGI to streamline the money-losing process. Like most things in life, there is a great efficiency to be gained by using modern technology.

The film industry peaked with Goodfellas and hasn't accomplished jack shit in terms of artistic value since then (except for the opening 20 minutes, Saving Private Ryan is overrated).  The last performer to get Best Actor who actually deserved it was George C. I hate hollywood. Most films are propaganda. I don't pay to go to movies because I'm always disappointed. I am sometimes in the room when my teenagers talk about a them or watch a DVD.

I saw Star Trek and before that.....Harry Potter-the first one...before that Forest Gump....

I am continually amused that people give a shit about this crap. I barely recognize the names.

10. Jim Carrey-. I think he was in some movies my pre-teens liked when they were pre-teens. 9. Samuel L. Jackson He's not black? He was iron man?  I thought Iron Man was white with a goatee. 8. Leonardo DiCaprio --Titanic and then what? Very pretty for a boy. 7. Drew Barrymore -- E.T. and then I don't know. 6. Tom Cruise I still think of him as Risky Business but he was also the short guy in Top Gun 5. Ice Cube - I thought he was a rapper? 4. Eddie Murphy  Seriously? Trading Places is the only thing that comes to mind. Who is pluto? 3. Billy Bob Thornton (Eh?) No clue who that even is. 2. Ewan McGregor  Absolutely no clue who that even is. At least with Billy Bob, I may have heard the name.1. Will Ferrell  My teenage boys think he is funny and watch anchoman over and over. I can't stand him.

65 If the government is going to go whole hog on taxation, why not have an "entertainment tax"? After all, movie stars, pro athletes, singers, etc, do not really produce anything that is absolutely vital to humanity. Let's do it right, say a 90 percent tax on entertainers. A-Rod can't live on 2.5 million a year? Tough titty. Surely, Tiger Woods can scrape by on 2 million a year. George Lucas, that Skywalker Ranch is an affront the poor and homeless, and why do you need 500 million bucks, anyway? The NFL could fund health care for several states with it's TV contract. And hey, you say that there should not be any superstar doctors, well, then there should not be any superstar lawyers, either. Pay the piper, it's for the common good.

I wouldn't say that.  McGregor doesn't seem to be interested in being a huge movie star.  He seems to take jobs that interest him, rather than Nicholas Cage-esque type blockbuster roles for money.

The Star Wars prequels did ruin Natalie Portman's career though.  She was a rising star before Star Wars.  Her part was terrible and most of it was cut out.  Her dialog was seriously awful.  Then all of a sudden the Star Wars movies are over and she hasn't done anything good for several years, its like she had to start over from scratch.

She is a Roman Polanski supporter though, so I guess it works out.

70 Obama is polling at 46% after years of relentlessly positive coverage.

Palin is polling at 47% after the most vicious and universal hitjob in US History.

I don't even like Palin that much, as a personality.  I don't like her social views on a couple of things, and I don't think she's brilliant so much as a fairly good leader.  But I know she's honest and wants a small government, and I know she can win.  I'm enthusiastically supporting her because we need someone like this.  W was no genius, but was willing to put up with hell to protect the country.  Palin has that + a realization that government is the problem.

I think the people saying she can't win are insane.  In 2012, what people will remember about Palin is that she was always balls on against Obama.  And healthcare reform, and big government.  No one really knows that about Romney or Huckabee.  Palin's got credibility as the true vote against Obama.

If we can't summon someone better, I am just fine with Palin, who I repeat, is polling better than Obama today.

71 gau, Portman is one of those actresses who was sexualized very, very young.  Like ridiculously young.

Sadly, the culture she is in is OK with sex with kids because that's their experience in real life.  David Lynch, for example, always dated his hot young stars on his pictures.  There's a reason he supports Roman's rape of that kid... it's how they think the world works.

I have no idea if it's really within our nature to be old and screw kids... I guess I'm just too ingrained with modern respect for childhood to even care.  Those people, though, have no innocence.  They are animals.

73 Portman is one of those actresses who was sexualized very, very young.  Like ridiculously young.

I hadn't thought of that.  Of course she has been acting since she was a kid, so its not surprising that she would have had similar experiences.  One would think, having gone through it herself, she might want to protect others from a similar fate.

Oh well, humans suck, nothing new there.

74 This site is no fun to post links to, but if you look for deleted scenes from 'Leon (The Professional)' on youtube, you will see her as a child wanting to have sex with an older man.  It's such a common refrain in that business, for some reason.  They think it's clever and fascinating and something I want to pretend to deal with as I eat popcorn.

Actresses have sex to get parts.  They don't really seem to care about that system, even.

77 Ewan McGregor and Drew Barrymore are surprising. I actually would go to see movies they are in. The rest of them call all take a flying leap. How about we replace McGregor with George Clooney and Drew with the insufferable Brangelina?

78 77 Harrison Ford has gone off the deep end...
What has he done now, other than being his usual tree-hugging self?

79 Bing! search reveals no rumours of alcohol or drug allegations RE Harrison Ford.

Honestly confused. My point was just that he's getting too old to perform the roles at which he does best. E.g., David McCallum can go on forever, since he's amazing at speaking roles; but Harrison Ford is a much more physical actor.

80 Motherfuckers be dissing IceCube, but he starred in Friday After Next, the funniest Christmas movie of all time.

I think most actors....stars.. in Hollywood should be on this list.  NONE of them do anything of worth to make the millions that they do.  Obama should go after them for more money and taxes...see if they like him after that!

But speaking of actors, the current American actors (not the ones from the 30's and 40's) really suck when compared to English actors.  Just speaking of acting they are the best!  In this country  some football playing jerk, or some model all of sudden becomes a actor ...what the hell...???

That's the only thing I don't like about America....our so-called actors/stars

83 81 ~ As Miss Whitney Houston would say....Oh, hell to the no!

Bad Santa is the funniest Christmas movie of all time.  Billy Bob's magnum opus, baby!  I can't look at mall Santas without wanting to crack up any more.

84 Samuel L. Jackson (I actually can't remember what he's been in recently except Iron Man. Oops, is that still a spoiler/secret?)

How soon we forget..."There's motherfuckin' snakes on this motherfuckin' plane."

85 Will Ferrell's comedies are a cross breed between "The Trouble with Tracy" (a Canadian comedy of the 1970's which hoped that a laugh track would make up for the lack of funny lines) and "Fractured Fairy Tales".

Though I did like his Youtube scit with the little girl who swears at him.  One problem though.  She was better.

86 The funny thing is that none of those 'name' actors are draws for me.  DeCaprio would get gang raped in a boy scout prison.  Carey isn't funny anymore, his schtick is getting old.  Jackson?  Same moralizing, ultra smart magic Negro.

Drew Barrymore? I like her.  Tom Cruise?  He's just like Obama, but more narcissistic. Eddie Murphy?  Well, you really can't do too many BHC or Dr. Dolittle movies for my taste.  BB Thornton?  Why should the viewing public care about him?  For sure he hates us.  Ice Cube?  He has a standing gig at LaO, but he really isn't a leading man.  No depth to his acting.

87 I'm surprised Cuba Gooding Jr. isn't on this list. For a good actor, he's sure done a lot of shit movies ("Snow Dogs", for example).

88 The only thing I find wrong with Will Ferrell is that HE'S NOT FUCKING FUNNY! The only less-funny comedic actor is Albert Brooks, who missed his calling. I don't know what his calling was, but it isn't comedy. Billy Bob and Samuel are whores. They'll do anything. But, every now and then they are brilliant. Slingblade and Friday Night Lights for Thornton, and Pulp Fiction and Resurrecting the Champ for Jackson.

89 "3 I don't get the Leo DiCaprio or the Ewan McGregor lists. McGregor's latest film is "The Men Who Stare At Goats". You know, now that Obama is President, the Iraq war is comedy fodder. (Note: I'm a huge Coen Bros. fanboy)" Is that a non-sequitur or did the filmmakers of that piece of crap succeed in fooling people into thinking TMWSAG is a Coen Brothers film?

90 Harrison Ford has gone off the deep end...
What has he done now, other than being his usual tree-hugging self?

"Indiana Jones and the Incredibly Poorly Thought Out Sequel That Introduced Aliens Into a Franchise That Had Focused on the Supernatural Until That Moment".

First, he should have turned it down on account of being too damned old to be a believable action star.

Second, he should have turned it down on account of the script sucking like a cross between a cheap hooker and a Dyson vacuum.

Third, he should have refused to work with Shia LeBouf (whose name means "Girly The Cow"). LeBouf should have retired after "Holes", and it says something when you peak in your first movie.

92 The only thing I find wrong with Will Ferrell is that HE'S NOT FUCKING FUNNY! The only less-funny comedic actor is Albert Brooks, who missed his calling. I don't know what his calling was, but it isn't comedy.

Ferrel is as funny as a punch to the nutsack. Which is appropriate, because half his "jokes" consist of getting punched in the nutsack.

Brooks can't deliver comedy worth shit. He can, however, recognize when other people are funny. He should stick to producing and leave the on-screen work to those with talent.

Posted by: Rob Crawford at November 20, 2009 04:53 AM (ZJ/un)

93 And Eddie Murphy...man, it's just sad what happened to him. That vulgar genius of Raw ended up doing lame kid-oriented shlock like Daddy Day-Care and Pluto Nash. (Bowfinger was pretty damned funny, though.)

And Vin Diesel. Pitch Black was great, The Iron Giant was great; everything else has been a floodtide of crap. (Although his Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay video game was pretty damned good.)

And Nic Cage. His last really good movie was Raising Arizona like 20 years ago (and was a Coen bros. movie!). Knowing was particularly bad.

John Cusack. Another actor who peaked as a teenager. Better Off Dead was hilarious. Even Say Anything was pretty good. But everything since then has been pretty crummy.

Apropos of nothing, I want to see Pauly Shore and Georgie Clooney in a remake of Gilligan's Island.

I really miss Tom Sizemore on the big screen. I wish he would straighten himself out.

Me too. He's a really good actor when given good material (Saving Private Ryan, Heat, Black Hawk Down); unfortunately, he's a train wreck in real life.

Gangs of New York was a flawed film, but Daniel Day Lewis was amazing in it. I'm sure he's sort of a pussy in real life, but I wouldn't fuck with him based on Bill the Butcher alone.

The biggest lamentation about Hollywood is how few good younger American actors there are. Most of the talent comes from Australia or England; there are no new Gene Hackmans or Robert Duvalls or Steve McQueens.

Heh, sorry Miss80s.  Nothing concrete.  Just seeing him talk he seems to be out of it to me.  I saw him at some banquet for George Lucas a couple of years ago and he was seriously loopy.  He was like a person on way too many prescription drugs, plus probably alcohol on top.  On the other hand, it was a party and such behavior isn't really that out of the ordinary.  So I don't know.

I'm surprised there are no rumors about him, but I am glad that I am probably wrong.
