Iron Man 2 Trailer
— Ace

Good stuff.

Yes, that's Mickey Rourke as "Whiplash" (never heard of him, but I never read Iron Man) and Scarlett Johanson (!!!) as, uh, Black Widow? Black Something Or Other. She's a hot Russian gunslinger known primarily as being a second-stringer in The Avengers. (As you might know, the plan is roll out Captain America and Thor movies, and then put Iron Man/Hulk/Captain America/Thor (and second-stringers like Black Widow) into a full-on Avengers movie.)

War Machine's in it too.

And... Second Clash of the Titans trailer.

Release the Kraken, dude. Don't bogart the Kraken.

I forget who said it, but some wit on the internet once said of a similar movie: "It's like all my Heavy Metal album covers just declared war on each other!"

Thanks to CDR M.

1 Well that's promising.  I liked the first one.  Kind of a small movie, but great sound track and what's his name was surprisingly good.

2 Looks good.

Not very impressed by the leading ladies in Iron Man movies so far, but still, looks good.

3 Two former drugies can make a great movie... who knew?

Posted by: Indian Outlaw at December 16, 2009 07:53 PM (8zsWd)

4 No. This suffers from the same plodding pacing that the first Iron Man trailer did. That one was uninspiring and so is this one. Tell me, if you didn't know anything about Iron Man, would you care about anything you saw in that trailer? No. There was no heart after the brief (and only bright spot in the thing) intro.

14 it does bug me that they are using the name for Ivan Vanko for Whiplash as that's the real name for Crimson Dynamo. Other than that, it looks great

15 >>>Did that quit smoking thing work? I'm almost ready to stop burning my money away? It works if you want it to. I went off for three weeks with only minor problems. However, I got stressed about shit and decided to go back on the filthy things. I would recommend it, but obviously you need to be determined to quit somoking. It's better than all stop-smoking things, I think, but you still need that irreplaceable determination to quit. Gabe, You live in a world where Terminator: Lt. 20 glad the second trailer for Clash didn't suck like the first trailer. Music is still fucking retarded and turning Kraken into a giant snapping turtle is off but it doesn't look too bad

21 Is Gwyneth Paltrow really necessary? Her role is kinda lame.

Posted by: Dr. Spank at December 16, 2009 08:09 PM (muUqs)

22 Seriously, problems with the Iron Man 2 trailer:

Entirely no investment in the characters unless you're already a fanboy. No heart (excepting the very brief opening).
Combination of plodding pace with confusing visuals.
Like they just grabbed visuals from wherever was handy.
No idea what the pic is gonna be about plotwise, except the characters that will be in it.
Inane, meaningless, and babbling narration. WTF is he even talking about?

The Clash of the Titans trailer is much better. Still uses rock motif, but has visual coherence and an interesting premise. You get a taste of the plot and the overall theme.

Posted by: Indian Outlaw at December 16, 2009 08:11 PM (8zsWd)

26 I don't have a problem with the rock motif for the trailer. Gladiator had "Bawiddaba" in its trailer, and it was awesome

Posted by: jollyroger at December 16, 2009 08:12 PM (Ro77u)

27 I was looking forward to the clash of the titans remake. Not anymore. Looks like another retarded pseudo-atheist screed where they "reinterpret" something to turn it into man vs divinity. And they picked the worst fucking greek hero for the job too. Of all the greek heroes I can think of, Perseus is pretty much the most god reliant of them all. If several gods hadn't give him a whole bunch of shit (magic sword, mirror shield, winged sandals, invisibility helmet) he'd have gotten his ass kicked the first time he ran into anything even remotely inhuman. he's still my favorite because super strength kinda pales in comparison to flying invisible cleaving death that can turn people to stone, but I'd never argue perseus was much of a champion against the gods (except poseidon, but he's a loser).

28  Although, now that you mention it, I dare you to go back and watch Iron Man without getting the urge to skip all of the cave captivity scenes. It's the slowest, most irritating thing to watch once you've seen it once. You will want to fast forward.

Posted by: Gabriel Malor at December 16, 2009 08:14 PM (Mi2wf)

29 >>>Entirely no investment in the characters unless you're already a fanboy. No heart (excepting the very brief opening). Iron Man one made like 600 million dollars in ticket sales alone, plus who knows how much in DVD rentals and Pay Per View. By now, most people who COULD see Iron Man did see it. Do I need to draw you a map here? I don't know why on earth the trailer needs to go far beyond its built-in billion-dollar base. it's Iron Man 2. Did you like the first one? Okay, this one is much like that one, except with Mickey Rourke and Scarlett Johnason. Sale made, transaction complete.

Is it too much to ask that they take a little pride in their work and try and turn out a trailer that does more than sit on its laurels, congratulating itself in how lucky it is to be the defacto beneficiary of twenty years of fanboy wetdreams?

Pepper Pots in the comic was very essential (except after her almost dying to Ezekiel where she then became a crappy sidekick), she was the glue that held Stark to reality. May not have had a big role in the first flick but she would be a great anchor if they do down the path of the comics and make Stark become a raving alcoholic

33 Posted by: ace at December 17, 2009 12:14 AM (/4E2O)

The first iron man sucked. Too little ass kicking, too many latent homosexuals running around. Then there was that whole eco shit where they turned Stark into a granloa kid. with all the global warming scamming going around I don't want to hear about the environment again for at least 10 years. I'm willing to reconsider if they can fit in polar bear genocide though.

Gabe, why do I need to know the plot when I already know I'm seeing it? It's the exact same creative team that nailed hte original (with the exception of switching actors for Rhodey). It is going to be some basic Hero vs. Villain plot. The world may in fact be in GRAVE PERIL at some point. Who cares? Do I really care if the problem is a biological supervirus or a cybernetic supervirus? Eh. I just don't care. As long as Stark is snarky and Iron Man blows some shit up I'm there. Re: Pepper Potts Are you guys high? I thought she was a delight, and I don't care for that actress much. But she was a really good heroine/sidekick. Nothing she did was absurd (like suddenly being a black belt marital artist and kicking some dudes' asses) but she had guts and was willing to do some dangerous stuff.

38 One can only wonder what effect the Disney purchase of Marvel will have on these movies. How long until Jar Jar Binks shows up in Captain America or they get some douche bag to play Thor?

Posted by: ace at December 16, 2009 08:23 PM (/4E2O)

42 One can only wonder what effect the Disney purchase of Marvel will have on these movies. The way I hear it (got some inside Disney info) is that Disney is going to leave well enough alone. If it's not broken, why fix it? They're just hoping to rake in some of that millions and millions of dollars.

Posted by: wherestherum at December 16, 2009 08:24 PM (gofDd)

Posted by: Dr. Spank at December 16, 2009 08:27 PM (muUqs)

45 Who's Whiplash? Working from memory he was one of those minor villains who could only be a threat to Iron Man when Iron Man was down to 1 or 2% power. Of course, the writers used that "almost out of power" trick in about half the early comics so Whiplash was actually a threat. I think he showed up in Tales of Suspense 98 or 99. He was a Mafia Maggia enforcer. Big strong guy, nearly 7 feet tall. Used steel reinforced whips with razor edges. Like I said, he could only be a threat to Iron Man if Iron Man had so little power that he couldn't use any weapons. When I heard he was going to be the villain in Iron Man 2, I groaned. When I saw the teaser a few months ago I said, "Kick Ass! - Whiplash looks great!"

46 Sorry Gabe.  I gotta go with Ace on this one.  If it lives up to great special effects and snarky Stark... well its what made the Westerns great, The War movies killer.... The next day, have to repeat by the water cooler or in line at subway.... PERFECT ONE LINERS.

56 Gabe, it's not ignorance, but you're missing the forest for the trees. Superhero stories are just rehashes of Greek heroic single-combats. It frankly doesn't matter much WHY Achilles fights Hector. Someone can contrive a thousand plausible reasons WHY they fight. It just matters that they're both really awesome and we want to see them fight. Whiplash has created a new "Neurosynth Bomb" that effectively acts like a "EMP pulse on the human brain," and when he detonates it, the entire world population will suffer a lethal seizure and die. Okay? So that's what it's about. (No, not really, just made that up. I can make up 20 other reasons if you really want me to.)

59 actually I guess I meant: The specific why of why they fight doesn't matter. The reasons are arbitrary. The only thing that separates a good movie from a bad one is how plausible/interesting they make whatever reason they've selected out of a hat.

81 the writers used that "almost out of power" trick in about half the early comics

The Japanese version of Iron Man (pretty much), 8 Man, was contrived to run out of suit power every twenty minutes or so. His fuel cell dealies looked like cigarettes so he could carry a bunch of them unnoticed and refuel inconspicuously when he wasn't super-heroing.

The thrilling! twist: In Japan at the time, smoking in front of other people was semi-forbidden by custom, even for superheroes, so he'd always wind up stumbling around almost dead through huge Tokyo crowds, looking for a place to hide and pretend to smoke mid-battle.

I always thought that was hilariously Japanese, but if you dropped 8 Man in NYC right now, he'd have the same problem. Because Giuliani destroyed America (pretty much).

(And I know that I purposely offended to get your attention.)

Disney did put Mickey Mouse, Goofy, and Donald Duck in a action anime series called Kingdom Hearts...

Posted by: Sock Puppet at December 17, 2009 12:48 AM (bgcml)

never an anime, just a series of okay videogames (first was really good, second sucked, the GBA spin off was decent and the DS game is okay but the story is good) between Disney and Square. Best thing coming out of it was bringing back the old Disney franchises in a good way. Plus the merch has been top notch.

Can't wait for Warren Spector's Mickey Mouse game

89 Okay I hate remakes as they almost always suck.
I was iffy on the first COTT trailer. I still don't like Greek gods in shiny medieval armor but other than that this 2nd trailer is the best trailer I have seen in many years.
The movie looks positively fucking awesome. I love the way the effects are huge but contained. No explosions where there shouldn't be, etc. Unless something drastically changes I will be seeing COTT come hell or high water.

You can keep Iron Man 2. I will see it on DVD but the first movie wasn't anything special so I will wait for 2 to hit DVD this time.

Posted by: jollyroger at December 16, 2009 09:08 PM (Ro77u)

101 The fact that IM2 has Paltrow and Scarlet are 2 more reasons to give it a pass till DVD.  I gave up on Paltrow with Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. The woman can act in front of a green screen to save her life. Not that she ever was that good anyways. I don't see what the attraction is with Scarlett either. Every time I see the woman the only thing I can think of is Ms. Piggy. And I don't mean she's fat. She has Ms. Piggy's face.

102 I will look at the Dean thing, but frankly, he said the same thing two weeks ago (which I covered). I will read the "new" stuff and see if it is new. I saw there was a headline somewhere, but I skipped, as I thought, "He said the same thing pretty much two weeks ago and I covered it."

103 kdabear- if this bill is going to fail, it is going to be because of the left; I think that is pretty important. We should champion our new found friends on the left that suddenly find mandates unconstitutional. This will lead into the entire theme of the 2010 election cycle, in my dumb opinion.

Posted by: t-bone at December 16, 2009 09:11 PM (Xpxvu)

104 Let us consider that line of "privatized world peace" and that the reason we don't have world peace is because, yes, humans are violent creatures.. but also because we trust world peace to be created by governments and politicians.  Why would we trust them with something so important?

113 Ace,
Male and she's alright but I wouldn't cross the street for her. She looks like a pretty average blond with a pushed up nose. There's nothing hot about her and she isn't classically beautiful. She is attractive in that odd sort of way sometimes but she doesn't scream hotness to me anyway.

Posted by: Rocks at December 16, 2009 09:17 PM (vxQot)

114 One thing about having a blog that ISN'T Hot air or instapundit is that I don't set the agenda. There have been a bunch of times when I covered something days before Hot Air or Instapundit. Then, when they get around to it, it becomes the blogosphere story of the day, and I get a bunch of tips to it. And I'm like: "Dudes! I was early on this!" Now the Dean thing sounds new. I know he said something new. But the basics of it -- that he's against ObamaCare -- he said two weeks ago, and it was covered here. I realize this is not YOUR fault; this is a circumstantial problem of being a smaller less influential blog. But the thing is, sometimes people don't even see this shit until it makes Hot Air or Drudge or Instapundit, and once in a while, it was actually here before them. I do this myself all the time, missing the fact that a coblogger got to a story earlier than the bigs, then linking it, and crediting hot air or something, when actually Drew or Dave or PA or someone posted it here the night before. I'm not blaming, I'm just saying: This is the position I'm in. I don't actually drive the debate. I don't decide the issue of the day. And sometimes I'll have already done something and people think I've missed it. Well, sometimes. Once in a while I was actually early on it. Now I've seen Dean headlines and I know he spoke again. But I'm just telling you why I said "meh" to the headline. Just because there wasn't there, I thought, anything much beyond what was already known. That said, I am, right now, at this moment, going to check it out, and I will probably post something, just becuase you asked. Okay

He wore the chest plate 24/7 for many years because his life depended on it. Then he got an artificial heart. One of those bits of comics technology that would revolutionize the world but isn't offered to anyone else who might benefit.

That sort of thing was one of the great underlying plot threads in a series called 'Planetary' that completed recently. Joe Bob sez check it out.

Totally.  Snark plus blowing shit up works for me.   And Pepper Potts (heh, cool name) was a great character.

Speaking of one liners, Stark got most of em but a smiling Pepper got a great one in: "I do anything and everything that Mr. Stark requires.  Even occasionally taking out the trash.  Will that be all?:

165 FWIW, I liked Iron Man too.  Of course, I am:

a) a pure geek about things like high-tech battlesuits and even higher-tech laboratories; and

b) sufficiently devious-minded that I found a way to interpret Iron Man as a conservative-friendly movie and Tony Stark as a consie hero-figure.  Now every time I watch it or even think about it, I laugh at the makers, who thought they were making a liberal anti-American anti-war movie and instead made the exact opposite.

Your mileage may vary.

In the Clash of the Titans trailer, who's the guy saying "Someone's got to make a stand" ?  It sounds a lot like Brian Cox, but I don't see him in the cast on IMDB.  Anyone?

As to the IM2, it looks good.  And the guy seems to have the right idea.  You don't even have to catch IM with the suit power at 1% if you catch up to him without the suit.

167 Natasha Romanov, the Black Widow, actually got it on hot and heavy with Daredevil back when Gene Colan was drawing the book. Evidently that blind dude "Can I feel your face?" come-on really works after all. Gwyneth Paltrow is perfect for the character. I won't really be impressed with Iron Man though, until Spielberg takes over the series and explains how Stark's armor is really just a projection of the psychological barriers he's had to put up between himself and the world to deal with his daddy and abandonment issues... Not looking forward to the Captain America movie. No Hollywood screenwriter ever born with the possible exception of John Milius will get him right.

171 I hope I'm wrong, but I have a bad feeling that Stark and Warmachine are fighting power-armored US Army at the end. Probably "bad" parts of the military, the usual cop out. One of the reasons I could never get into Hulk- Thunderbolt Ross and his men are trying to prevent a rampaging radioactive monster from leveling cities. And they are the bad guys? Captain America is tentatively scheduled to be directed by Joe Johnston, mainly because he did the pulp period piece "The Rocketeer". It's sometimes overlooked, but is one of my favorite comic hero flicks.

14 it does bug me that they are using the name for Ivan Vanko for Whiplash as that's the real name for Crimson Dynamo. Other than that, it looks great.

They actually made the character a combination of the two.  Whiplash and Crimson Dynamo.  Not sure why, but that was the explanation the studio put out there.

Still, I think it looks pretty damend good, and I loved the first one.

Scarlett Johansson? IÂ’d hit that so hard, if you pulled me out youÂ’d be king of England.

In the Clash of the Titans trailer, who's the guy saying "Someone's got to make a stand" ?

Looks like Pete Postlethwaite (sp?) to me.

176 I think they should have given Chucky Shumer the part of the Senator that wants Stark's suit. Would have been even better for stark to say "Fuck off Chuck!!" I will see the movie just to see someone tell the Senate to screw off.

He was in that?  Great.  Now I'll have to watch it again.
