68 Well, several commenters on this thread report temperatures in the high 70's/low 80's in Southern California.  Once we use that to homogenize the data from the Northeast, we find that it's actually 75 degrees in New Haven.

69 Wow - SiM - they actually canceled their 3-year-old's party the day before? Well, these people haven't sent out any such memo. I wish they would just call or email, and say the party is canceled. I can't imagine that all of us will be able to make it out. Then again, last year, our little one had a birthday party at Build A Bear and a snow storm was scheduled for that day, and I've gotta say - everyone made it to the party. So, if it's not canceled tomorrow, we're going to have to brave through it, and get there.

77 We got out beat-down in West Texas during the first eight days of the month, with two snows, one sleet and a windstorm thrown in the middle (I'd call them "snowstorms" since they did shut down Interstate 10 twice, but that's only because the Texas Department of Transportation refuses to throw salt on the highway to melt snow or ice anyplace south of Lubbock. So the storms may have dumped a combined 6-8 inches in the area up in the mountains where I-10 was blocked).

Right now, it's a nice 60 degrees, with forecasts of temperatures in the low 70s until the next cold front arrives, right before Christmas (but not cold enough for any more white stuff to fall, unless you want to drive up into the higher mountains in New Mexico).

I'm in the suburbs of DC watching the snow pile up.  The apartment walk has been shoveled twice today and it's full of snow again.  My car has a very impressive snow drift on it.  The mailman did not make it today.  There is no real wind, just a steady fine snowfall.

Last night at the grocery store, it was a mob scene with people stocking up on groceries like the Martians just landed.  All the parking spots were taken and so were all the grocery carts.  All the cash registers were open with another one set up in the deli.  Twenty people with full carts in every line.

The good news is that I picked up Glenn Beck's "Arguing with Idiots" and read about twenty pages in line.  It's pretty good.  Well-written, well-reasoned, making its capitalist arguments with facts.

Washington, DC is a weather weenie town.  When a couple inches of snow are forecast, the gummint workers scramble for the exists and take leave.  Three or four inches of well-timed snow can shut the city down.  If we get a foot and a half of snow, the whole city will shut down for a day or two.

85 If you haven't made the mistake of reading that VF article linked on the side, don't.

These AGW fiends are truly something.

"Only Obama, the argument went, had the power and prestige to break the deadlock at this summit, widely regarded as humanityÂ’s last good chance to preserve a livable climate."

So am I to believe that early evolutionary man these science-types ascribe to withstood hundreds of thousands of years of the elements while living in caves, but modern man can't survive a 2*C increase in temps over a 100 year period?  Seriously?

“His administration already has the legal tools to achieve deep and rapid greenhouse emissions reductions from major polluters, consistent with what science demands, through the Clean Air Act. The next step is for E.P.A. to issue pollution-reduction rules for vehicles, smokestacks, and other polluters, and to set a science-based national pollution cap for greenhouse gases.”

I always thought "science" was a process, not a organic being that "demands" we go back to hairshirts and spiked clubs.

How in the F have we let these people beat us on any topic is beyond me.

YES!!!!!!!

Washington, DC is a weather weenie town.

Yeh, we were at Andrews for 3+ years. The first year there was a snow storm in Dec. and the contractor for snow removal "wasn't ready." And I remember laughing when I'd drive somewhere while it was snowing--light flurries--and there would be nobody else on the road.

92 There was no snow in Syracuse when I left this morning, and it looks like all the snow that fell on Milwaukee this month melted before I got here.  Apparently I'm the opposite of the Gore Effect.

Which sucks, because I like snow.

100 Explain this phrasing to me: "Blizzard-like storm slams East, region snowed in" from the AP. Ok, its either a blizzard or its not, attaching "like" to the headline implies some difference or variation that sets it apart from a blizzard. Why not just say blizzard? I know the answer - The AP thinks if it uses nuances it can fool people into thinking its not storming out.

83 Last night at the grocery store, it was a mob scene with people stocking up on groceries like the Martians just landed.

I learned something from the all the Mormons I did remodels for.
I took all my grocery receipts for 90 days and purchased all the staple items,
paper goods and bottled water. I bought shelves and now I just do my regular shopping, rotating the new stuff to the back and using the oldest stuff.
Four, 5 gallon Blitz Steel cans stagger rotated every other week.
Never let the gas gauges on the cars get below half.
Yamaha 2000w generator. 1800w solar setup with inverters and extra batteries.
Only use Imedion Next Generation rechargeable batteries with a Maha charger. Lots of LED flashlights.
Shortwave radio.
Six 20 pound propane bottles and a camp stove.
Altogether it was less than $3500
Any real problems and I'm good for several weeks.

You have to ask yourself two questions: 1: are any of these people folks you want to impress, and 2: are any of them folks you really, sincerely, would like to nail?

Here is the analytical matrix I would construct:

1=Y, 2=Y, answer = NO

1=Y, 2=N, answer = NO

1=N, 2=Y, answer = NO

1=N, 2=N, answer = NO

We don't get a lot of snow here in NE Florida but when we do its fun. The last time we had freezing rain (2" of solid ice) followed by 2" of snow. Shut the whole city down. I took my '67 El Camino out in it for the experience. The local Albertson's parking lot was empty so I had a little skid-pad fun. The Sheriff's boys were there watching me the whole time. What the hell were they gonna do? Chase me? They actually got out of their patrol unit and watched, applauding when I did a complete 720. Good Time, Good Times.

I was stationed at Shaw AFB, SC in the early 90's. One day we got about a half inch of freezing rain/snow. I was going to the store and stopped in a strip mall outside the base where there was a county sheriff in the parking lot doing donuts. After he stopped and went into the store, I laughed and told him the cops up here in SE Mich would give him a ticket for that. It'll get down to about 55 tonight. The government in California is insane and the economy is tanking. But this is why I live here. Orange County is better than most of the state and the climate is beautiful. It did snow here recently, 1959 I think.
