It's Official: Obama Moving Guantanamo Bay Detainees to Illinois
— Ace

Out of the corrupt, socialist frying pan and into the corrupt, socialist fire.

The critical step toward fulfilling President Obama's pledge to shut the Guantanamo detention center will be announced Tuesday, said the official, who reported that Obama has ordered the acquisition of the eight-year-old Thomson Correctional Center, about 150 miles northwest of Chicago.

Obama made the move despite the objections of Illinois Republicans, who fear the transfer of prisoners -- some for indefinite detention, some for trial -- could make the state a target for terrorists. Rep. Mark Kirk has called the move "an unnecessary risk."

In telegraphing the announcement, the official said closing the detention center at Guantanamo Bay "is essential to protecting our national security and helping our troops by removing a deadly recruiting tool from the hands of al- Qaeda."

Oy. How far up Obama's butt do you think that guy stuck his head? 'Cause sure as shit, it's not going to give Al Qaida a recruiting tool to hold terrorists in "Thomson Correctional" instead of Guantanamo Bay, right?

Note the line: "some for indefinite detention, some for trial." If by "indefinite detention" you mean, "release sooner rather than later" because now they're on U.S. soil and entitled to greater due process protections than they otherwise would have been, then, sure, their detention is "indefinite."

Oh, but there is a sticking point. Obama is announcing this like it's a done deal. It's not:

Before prisoners can be moved, Congress must vote to allow detainees to be housed on U.S. soil for reasons other than trial.

The administration envisions the prison grounds in rural Thomson, close to the Mississippi River, where the former prisoners can stow away on a riverboat before taking a slow boat to north Africa.

I may have altered that last bit. Maybe.

No this is not a double post. This is so important I thought I'd mention it twice. Once for the early risers and once for those of us who sleep 'til noon. Except today I was up before noon. Really.

1 The media wants to focus on the security risks. The real danger is the legal precedent of giving terrorists full constitutional rights.

If we're so afraid of hurting al-Qaeda's feelings, why don't we just let all the prisoners go.  I mean, the will still be detained, face trials, and possibly death sentences, so won't those now be the new recruiting tools?

Does anyone in this administration think more than 1 move deep?

22 How does moving terrorists from Cuba to a Chicago suburb "remove a recruiting tool?"  They just arrested two Chicagoan jihadis for their part in the Mumbai Massacre.  Palestinian suicide bombers went to Harold Washington College in downtown Chicago.  Now the domestic jihadis have their "recruiting tools" within convenient driving distance.

From the same people who brought you the logic of "spend your way out of a deficit."

25 Um, the terrorists had a deadly recruiting tool before 9/11 and GTMO, that would be THEMSELVES. And whatever dastardly evil they chose to pile upon their recruits-we will kill your mother/sister/wife/children, we will rape your mother/sister/wife/children, we will (name your evil). So moving GTMO detainees to the US is going to STOP this? How? No really, how? Because, the detainees are still detained, but they are detained IN the US, with its porous, unwatched borders. Tell me again, how is this going to make America safer?

The Illinois congressman whose northwestern district includes the prison that the Obama administration said today it will buy to hold terrorist suspects now at Guantanamo Bay said he doesn't like the idea but there's nothing he can do to stop it.

Republican Don Manzullo has two major complaints concerning federal purchase of the almost empty state Thomson prison. One is the haste with which the White House chose the site; the other is what he characterized as its lack of responsiveness to the many emerging questions.

He added: "I've been asking along: If the reason for closing Gitmo is it represents a severe security threat that is used to attract terrorists as a recruiting tool, what guarantee do we have that the hatred and vitriol  and animosity that the terrorists have toward Guantanamo Bay will not transfer to Thomson, Ill.?"

It's obvious that Don Manzullo is a racist and counter-revolutionary.

69 Sorry so late to post, pst time.

U.S. Rep Pete Hoekstra, R-Mich, said: The Administration informed us last night that it intends to move hard-core al Qaeda terrorists to the United States for detention, even though right now that use of funds is prohibited by law.

When has that stopped them?

Maybe this is a time for the Repubs to go to the Supreme Court?  Just like Honduras and Zelaya.

Really, that's what the court is for, as a check and balance of powers.

If the Executive Branch is overstepping their authority, and ignoring the Legislative Branch's authority (denial) of funding, the Court needs to decide.  Otherwise, there's no stopping of Executive power.

It is not about closing the jail/prison, BO intends to gift the entire US airbase to the Castro brothers, giving up our 99-year treaty rights. The prison is merely a smoke and mirror deal for the American people.  The left knows what is up here.

"Closing Gitmo" means giving the Castros a big Kaawanza gift...a full-size American airbase.
