Jihadis Of The World, Welcome To The Land Of Lincoln!
— Ace

In an utterly stupid move that is nothing more than a sop to Obama's main constituent groups, US liberals and the adoring billions around the world, the administration is officially moving some of the Gitmo detainees to a soon to be upgraded prison in Illinois.

Dozens of terrorism suspects being held at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, will be moved to a little-used Illinois state prison that will be acquired and upgraded by the federal government, an Obama administration official said.

The critical step toward fulfilling President Obama's pledge to shut the Guantanamo detention center will be announced Tuesday, said the official, who reported that Obama has ordered the acquisition of the eight-year-old Thomson Correctional Center, about 150 miles northwest of Chicago.

Obama made the move despite the objections of Republicans in Congress and in Illinois, where critics say the transfer of prisoners -- some for indefinite detention, some for trial -- could make the state a target for terrorists. Rep. Mark Kirk has called the move "an unnecessary risk."

...(Illinois Senator Dick) Durbin estimated that the move from Guantanamo could create as many as 3,000 jobs.

National Review has a scathing editorial which lays out the case that this move will almost certainly lead to a terrorist being released onto the streets of America.

Though the nationÂ’s attention has been focused on the administrationÂ’s absurd decision to grant the 9/11 plotters a trial in the civilian justice system, the fact is that many, if not most, of the remaining Gitmo detainees will not face a trial of any kind. They are being held under the laws of war, which permit the detention of enemy operatives until the conclusion of hostilities. The threat they pose is terrible, but it is known to us mostly through foreign intelligence that may not be used in trial proceedings.

This was not a problem in AmericaÂ’s prior wars. Handling enemy prisoners was properly considered a military matter. In this war, activist judges urged on by left-wing lawyers have taken on an oversight role: the power, codified by Congress in the 2005 Detainee Treatment Act, to review the legitimacy of military detention. Many civilian judges are fundamentally hostile to the concept of indefinite detention under wartime protocols that do not require proof of a crime. With no political accountability to the voters whose lives are at stake, and no guidance from Congress regarding the rules for these detention proceedings, judges have made abominable rulings, vacating the combatant designations of detainees who were trained in terror camps and clearly connected to the jihadist network.

So far, these rulings have not resulted in detaineesÂ’ being released in the United States. But that is only because, at present, the detainees are physically kept outside of the country. In the 2005 Real ID Act, Congress barred aliens who either have been members of terrorist organizations or have received paramilitary training in terrorist camps from entering our nation. Though one judge has tried to order detainees released here regardless, his order was reversed on appeal. Other judges have been hesitant to hold that their power to review detention rulings implies a power to order detainees released, much less released in the United States, in defiance of statutory proscription.

Lawfare Fever, Catch It!

This is nothing but a PR move. There's absolutely no reason to do this. The left can go on all it wants about "Gitmo hurts our image" abroad. Well, to the extent it does, it's because of their lies and distortions about what was going on there and the history of how America and every other country has handled these hostis humani generis.

Obama will undoubtedly talk about how this move will impress the world community and serve as evidence America is once again living up to its ideals.
We've been down this road of pretending foreign jihadis are like car jackers. We did it after the first World Trade Center attack. The fact that there was a second attack shows how impressed the 'world' and the terrorists were.
Personally, I was unaware of any American value that required us to treat war criminals as common criminals but maybe that's just me. Certainly neither Lincoln, who Obama will no doubt invoke, nor the liberal God FDR were under this kind of illusion.

America will be less safe under this scheme but Obama will get to pander to his liberal base and 'save or create' jobs. At least there's no doubt what His priorities are.

12 Two-Gun Barack the Hyde Park Kid blows off another one of his toes.

Think about it:  the vanishingly small minority of Americans who actually give a f**k about the poor widdle terrorists at bad old Gitmo are people who would vote for Obama even if he came to their house and personally lit them on fire.  He gains nothing from this.

But the vast majority of Americans will see terrorists brought to America.  They'll hear the steady water-torture drip of legal maneuvers, lawsuits, changes of venue, insults to America -- and it will ALL. BE. OBAMA'S. FAULT.

16 Just more proof that Obama is destined to be a one-termer. He's an oppo ad writers dream - I mean, where to begin? From graphics showing the debt/UE going vertical, to images of KSM preaching to the 9/11 victims families to the "openness" of the Congress (as the door slams shut) to showing people going into cardiac arrest when they open their health care premiums post-health care "reform". I'll say this, if the Republicans can't beat this guy with all of the ammo that he's given them in 2009, then the deserve to lose, and I guess we'll all deserve to be "ruled".

Then once we get back into power it is important that we arrest any politician, activist, and judge who helped get these guys moved here. They need to be tried for treason. We also need to be willing to arrest any judge who tries to stop it and try them for treason. yes I live in Illinois, what a bunch of crap this is. there is no way in the world it can be justified. it makes zero sense. the claims about our world image and gitmo being an al qaeda recruiting tool are nonsense. there were plenty of terrorists before gitmo, and does anyone really belief that guys thinking about joining al qaeda now are going to think twice because after all, Gitmo was closed. haha.

listen, if this is so great for Illinois, then send them to downtown chicago to the Cook county jail. those guys will will wish like hell they were still at Gitmo.

92 assume that they are closing gitmo and there is nothing you can do about it.

then I am for moving them to this prison if merely to create some jobs in Illinois, and to get some money for the state.  If I were a Republican congressman, I would get guarantees that the military would continue to operate the prison, not the federal government.  That's the real bitch.

We are fighting a war.  the left thinks we are doing something else.  This is a POW camp, not a prison.  Let them freeze in rural illinois rather than enjoy the balmy climes of the Caribbean.  The view of the corn is shitty compared to the view of the ocean.  Maybe they will become hopeless in that prison.

I am against closing Gitmo, but assume there is virtually nothing I can do to stop it.  they have the votes.

Posted by: jeff at December 15, 2009 07:32 AM (+uoRK)

93 Aha.  There's a Thompson IL by Dubuque and Thomson IL by Clinton.  The prison's at the latter.

So the terrorists are not going to one of the "escape-proof" federal super maximum security prisons, but just a plain old state prison that was never designed to hold terrorists?  However, assuming they are not released by a sympathetic judge, escape, or traded for hostages, they will:

1. Get 3 good meals a day.

2. Have free housing, clothing, medical care, exercise facilities and education facilities.

3. Be able to convert other prisoners to Islamic terrorism.

4. Be able to plan other acts of terror and communicate plans to their terror buddies via visitors and their lawyers.

5. Tie up the legal system and cost the US taxpayer millions in frivolous lawsuits and legal fees.

Good job, 52% you really screwed up.  And when, not if, these terrorists carry out another act of terror, you will have no one to blame but yourselves.

Obambi is a Sox fan.  They deserve them

Kirk is the sort of squishy RINO who passes for raving conservative in that state.  [insert supreme being here] help us all.

My Rep. Roskam is pretty good.  I think I'll send Sen Dick Turbin a note saying he just lost any hope of ever getting my vote.  Of course he completely ignored the last time I sent a note saying I'll never vote for him.  He compared the treatment the detainees were getting to the treatment under the Nazis.  I had to send a note detailing the experience of my dad in his 5 years in Sachsenhausen.

Amish Dude ..... C O R R E C T

Here's a pure hypothetical for Rocks. Let's say there's a training facility and org called Ja'amat al-Fuqhra. It trains ex-con and assorted scum jihadi-wannabees on how to do Religion of Pieces outreach .... weapons, explosives, you get it. It's close to the nations capitol, and has been given kid-glove treatment by local and state LE because of the shit-for-brains PC crap ladled into our culture by enemies within.  Hypothetical, got that Rocks ? Ace would BanHammer me if I pointed out the obvious demographics of this recruiting class. Venn-diagram time, kuffirs. Or it's national legal front face ... I'll "Hold" off on that one. That's as much subtlety as this issue deserves. If I offend, let me go upstarirs and put on my " I give a shit" shoes.

You don't need to take down the prison. You screw the nearby town. Or the support services - food, cleaning, transportation, utilities. It's not like ID badges and other authentication material has been lifted from airports, and associated settings. It's not like the TSA gives CAIR a background tour of security. It's not like TSA mouthbreathers also let leak security protocols online. It's not like commercial airliners on final approach are having cockpits continuously lased as they approach beautiful Detroit Metro over al-Dearborn.

Clue up. Quickly

Hmm...so the government of Illinois built a large prison that they didn't seem to really need. Who got the contracts to build it? And now there will be all kinds of Federal contract money to keep it up as the Jihadi Hilton. Who will get those contracts?

Yeah...welcome to the Chicago Way.

The funny thing (if there is such a thing). They built this prison while, simultaneously, while trying to close a prision in downstate in an area that had the gall to actually elect a Republican who stood up to the Chicago Democrats.

Yeah........the Chicago Way.

While it's true Mark Kirk (R-IL-10) is a squishy R at best, the district itself is squishy.  The representative from IL-9 right next door is Jan Schakowsky (D)for pete's sake, she's possibly even leftier than Pelosi herself.   Her husband pleaded guilty to kiting checks for his biz and served jail time, yet it had no effect on her reelection.

Kirk is running for the US Senate to replace the excreable Roland Burris, who was appointed to Obama's vacated Senate seat by former Gov. Blago.  After Burris got the seat, it came out he offered to raise money for Blago.  And kinda sorta forgot to mention that fact to the legislature in IL when Blago & Burris were being investigated.  AND of course the US Senate declined to take any action against Burris either, since they knew he would vote exactly as Reid tells him to vote.

120 Before a single criminal charge could be lodged against the Thomson 200 (you think Obama is just going to ship off thirty six terrorists to Illinois, you naive beings), as they set foot on US soil, all of them will have had their lawyers file Habeus Corpus petitions in federal court of the northern district of Illinois.  There are about three dozen federal judges in that Court, given that there have been two ultra liberal senators in place in Illinois for the past two dozen years, almost all of those judges will be liberal democrats since no judge can be appointed by either a republican or democrat president in any district court without the approval of the senators from that state. Since no Illinois democrat senator would have approved any conservative nominees for any district court in Illinois, I would wager that less than five to ten percent of the sitting judges would be conservative or republican. Thus, if the 100 - 200 habeus petitions go to illinois federal court, each lib judge by random selection would have half dozen habeus petitions each, greatly increasing likelihood of the release of these enemy combatants.
