Krauthammer: Sully in a Nutshell
— Gabriel Malor

Charles Krauthammer kicks Andrew Sullivan up one side of the street and down the other. Sully whined about Krauthammer's "latest" column because in Sully's fevered mind, Krauthammer failed to mention his gas tax scheme because he is "more invested in obstructing and thereby neutering Obama and the Democrats than in solving any actual problems in front of us."

In other words, Sully accused Krauthammer of the type of partisan hit-jobs he's used to writing (and reading over at DKos, I'm sure). For Sully, Krauthammer's omission was all about Obama.

Krauthammer politely explains to Sullivan that he should just fuck off:

If you click on the column of mine that he cites, which he calls my "latest" and which betrays my anti-Obama fanaticism, you will find that it begins with the following headline:

Carbon Chastity
The First Commandment of the Church of the Environment
By Charles Krauthammer
Friday, May 30, 2008

Note the date: May 30, 2008. A year and a half ago. At the time, George Bush was president. Barack Obama hadnÂ’t even won the Democratic nomination, let alone become president of the United States. The column has absolutely nothing to do with Barack Obama.

Sullivan's entire ad hominem conclusion -- that my views are animated by nothing but the basest, most corrupt partisan motives -- turned out to be a complete invention based on his inability to read dates.

It gets better.

6 Well, even the good Dr. K. deserves to vent his spleen once in a while. Even if the target is such a creature as Sullivan. Sullivan is the letters equivalent of the town weakling: everyone can kick his ass, so it's no great mark of honor if one of the strongest guys in town does it.

7 Many of the commenters on Krauthammer's column over at the WaPo are offended by K's "smarmy" attacks on Sullivan.  Seems like at least some morons still love ol' "Milky Loads" with his "Power Glutes".   Didn't know that Andy had got around that much.

9 The meds are no longer working for Sullivan!  Soon, the dogs will have to learn to type for him, which may improve the columns immensely.  Until then, let's just enjoy his shenanigans and relish Krauthammer's take-down with the joy of the Season.

Monty: Well...yeah. It was pretty sweet. But, dude. It's not like he's a challenge, you know? My grandmother could kick his ass. My overweight Aunt Penny could kick his ass, and she has to use a Rascal to get around the local Wal Mart.
Dr. K.: Well, sure, but...he insulted me!
Monty: That's what Sullivan does. Like it's a can-opener's job to open cans. He's one short step away from standing in Times Square, wearing a sandwich board and shouting "Woe!" to the passers-by.
Dr. K.: I get what you're saying.
Monty: Save your ammo for the bigger game, Dr. K. This little pismire isn't worth the stink off your shit.

Apparently Sullivan's words, no matter how ridiculously fatuous and wrong in fact, only contain what "everyone knows to be true" - That K is obstructionist and hates Obama because he is askeered of him . ...So everything Sully wrote is true and by the way he's corrected so it's like it never happened and K is a bad person, also a jew.

The comments at the Wapo are hilarious.  Apparently Krauthammer is not just a Jew, he's a mean Jew.

On the gas tax thing, it's really easy to conflate higher gas taxes and higher gas taxes that are offset by lower taxes elsewhere, a zero sum gas tax.  The former is statist, usually proposed by Dems, and usually tagged by Dems as Republican ideas.  The latter is an attempt to apply externality costs, polution, to the source of the externality, gasoline.  The execution is everything here but the intent seems solid to me:  overall tax revenues stay the same but we tax less things with positive externalities (buying that software via a download vs a CD in the mail) and tax more those with negative externalities, like cigarettes (the argument here is generally all about externalities:  smokers get lung cancer and stick the state with their medical bills so higher taxes are needed to offset these costs......never mind that smokers die earlier and don't collect social security).

Same thing on Medicare cuts.  Republicans propose Medicare and/or Medicaid cuts to make these programs sustainable in the long term.  Democrats propose these same cuts to pay for new entitlements.  And then Dems say Medicare cuts are Republican ideas.  Cause they're evil and you'd have to be evil to WANT to cut Medicare.  It's amazing the Kindergarden level thinking that passes for argument coming from the Dems.

53 - Good points. Krathammer is a neocon, not a conservative. There's a major difference.

54 - "Do not fuck with Krauthammer." Krathammer's statement about Sarah Palin leaving the room on the healthcare debate was one of the dumbest of the year. As the immortal Joe Biden would say, "With three words - Death Panels - Palin had a greater effect on the healthcare debate than dozens of columns written by Krathammer."

The fact that "Going Rogue" just when platinum has to be driving Krathammer and the other Beltway Elites crazy.

the conservative intelligentsia is much more invested in obstructing and thereby neutering Obama and the Democrats than in solving any actual problems in front of us.

Posted by: Schaefermeister at December 01, 2009 10:33 AM (I3PNd)

69 I have to disagree with Monty on this one.  In today's economy, your name is the brand.  In five more years, the WaPo might be nothing more than an online hangout, with no print edition.  Meanwhile the columnists, pundits, ur-bloggers, etc, will all be known by name.

In a sense, it's like a copyright or patent: you have to defend it, at least some of the time, to keep it.  In this case, you need to defend your name, at least some of the time, for your sponsors and customers to take you seriously. It would be nice if it were not the case, but wishful thinking doesn't pay the bills.

The thin-skinned appear to be losers, and one always should avoid providing advertising for an opponent.  However, even Rush (who is one of the best at managing his brand) decides to mention Olbermann once in a while.  It's a marketing necessity.

72 While I'm at it, I think the "Krauthammer is a liberal" claim is bizarre.  Sure, he's got a serious problem because of his Palin-bashing.  So do many in-the-trenches (and otherwise admired) conservatives.  I strongly disagree with them, and in the case of the Powerline guys, I've even quit wasting my time with their work.

But the fastest way to irrelevance is the freerepublic route.  That sort of "issue purity" crap gave us John McCain on a silver platter. It's also why those of us who are not uppercase-C "Conservatives" occasionally feel like we are caucusing with self-defeating losers.  Occasionally.

Oddly enough, it's also why I think Palin is the one candidate the purity goons and the mainstream, non-leftist population can both be happy with.  She's confidently non-leftist, and also happens to embody the Conservative ideals of most purists without being obnoxious about it.

As for the beltway elites, who cares about them? Not enough of them to matter, for one, and those same types were behind Bush Senior when Reagan was championing what Bush called "voodoo economics." Of course, they all sing a different tune now.

When it comes to their anti-Palin, elitist bullshit, screw them, and if Krauthammer is with them, then screw him, too.  But he isn't "Liberal," and he's worth listening to, even when he is wrong.  Just like Rudy, Romney, and even Sir Pawlenty The Bland.

74 "Yes they are like K-man, they are all liberal RINOs.

BTW, you left out Hucktard the pardoning fool."

I left out Huck because he isn't worth listening to.

As for RINO, you have to be a Republican to be a RINO.  I'm an independent, and not a Conservative. I caucus with Conservatives because the left needs to be defeated.

The folks I mentioned, like me, are not Liberals.  That much is obvious to any non-leftist.  Huck is an anomaly.  He isn't a Liberal, but he's not much of a Conservative, either.

As far as I can tell, the Republican party is not in it to win it, so I wouldn't bother joining or contributing to the RNC anyway.  I do send money to individual Republicans that deserve it.  Sometimes a Libertarian, if he's not too "Ron Paul"-ish.

77 "I was wrong in inferring any shift of Krauthammer's position under Obama; and I apologize to Krauthammer and my readers for both the mistake and the unfair inference."   Power glutes/The Atlantic has readers? I think I just soiled myself with laughter. If either had readers, they are probably coming in search of entertainment because of the embarrassing spectacle that Andrew has become.   Watching Andrew flail about trying to grasp at unattainable relevance is entertaining; but sad, if not bordering on pathetic. It kind of reminds me of Keef Oberwoman trying to match wits with anything sharper than, say ... a rock.   Clearly, The Atlantic has zero journalistic integrity or they would never allow a lunatic like Andrew a forum.   Perhaps Andrew should stay in Keef's league and never try to out wit anything/anybody with an IQ higher than a common vegetable. Watching him get sliced and diced with an intellect he will never attain himself was enough to make me a fan of Charles. Then again, I've always enjoyed reading Charles's articles.
