Maurice Clemmons Shot and Killed by Police
— Dave in Texas

Found in a stolen car by a lone officer, ordered to stop and refused. Shot and killed by a lone officer.

Assistant Police Chief Jim Pugel says 37-year-old Maurice Clemmons was killed about 2:45 a.m. Tuesday. Pugel says the officer found the car, which had been recently stolen, recognized Clemmons and ordered him to show his hands and stop. Pugel says Clemmons wouldn't stop, and the officer fired several rounds.

New link, more info: Police detaining several they believe helped him and/or tried to mislead them about his wherebouts.

And there's this too:

Pulaski County Prosecutor Larry Jegley, whose office opposed Clemmons' parole in 2000 and 2004, said Huckabee's comments were "red herrings."

"My word to Mr. Huckabee is man up and own what you did," Jegley said.

I believe he has some doubts regarding Huckabee's expressed concerns over the "broken justice system".

12 how long before the Justice Twins™ (Al & Jesse) show up to lecture us about 'black rage'? My thoughts also. When the article said a lone officer stopped him and shot, my first thought was, how are they going to go after this officer for racial profiling or not trying harder to "save" the perp. I know we need pardons to help in cases like Ramos and Campeon, but otherwise, I'm thinking they aren't such a good idea.

I thank him.  I live in the Metro area and feel safer now that I'm not looking over my shoulder wondering if the cop killer is hiding in the bushes somewhere.

To those who aided him, they should spend MANY MANY years in prison considering their actions.

36 Hmmmmm..

"Police! Stop or I'll Shoot"

means

"If you don't stop, you will be shot."

How .........   literalist and devoid of nuance.

I think the media are to blame for this turn of events.

Maurice Clemmons no doubt watched years of television in which the police officers on screen would say "Stop or I'll shoot" or some variation thereof,  the suspect would run, and the officer would holster his or her weapon, sigh, and then race after the suspect.  I hope Mr. Clemmons's family files a multi-bazillion dollar lawsuit against Big Media and wins.   for the children.

I also hope the lone officer gets a quick recert and is back on the street.  I hope the families of the slain officers can find some peace and support from their community.

How does a guy, wanted on a warrant from 1300 miles away, make bail? I'm joking about the bondsman. I mean the judge. How does this guy have 15k cash for bail? And you know he paid at least 10k for a lawyers retainer.

There is a lot of blame to go around, but why is nobody mentioning the last judge that granted him bail?

First they should be taken out in the middle of the road in the community where all this took place. Strapped to a large wooden cross. Have their shirts ripped off their backs. The flogged with a large bull whip.

The they can be sent to prison for decades.  It is obvious from the facts in this case and and previous events in this town that the lawless element has seized control from the ass sucking liberals who run the community.

It is time to take back the city people.

In March 2001, he was accused of violating his parole by committing aggravated robbery and theft, according to a story in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

He was returned to prison on a parole violation. But in what appears to have been a mistake, Clemmons was not actually served with the arrest warrants until leaving prison three years later. As a result, Clemmons' attorney argued that the charges should be dismissed because too much time had passed. Prosecutors dropped the charges.

Whoever let this happen also has some 'splainin to do.

The Huckabee camp is trying to pass this off as failure of "the system" in both Arkansas and Washington. But my friend Bill Otis, a former prosecutor, observes that the "system" had Clemmons behind bars for the duration until Huckabee let him out.

Long story short, Washington state judges may have hosed up, but the chain of custody lands right back on Huckabee's desk...

78 Mr. Huckabee has responsibility for creating this situation.  Prosecutors related how dangerous this guy was, yet Huckabee either pandered to certain parts of the electorate, or he let his emotions do the action.  Either way, his irresponsible actions contributed to the murders of four fine police officers.

He will not man up to his disastrous decision.  IMHO, he is washed up,as a politician,  which is the best punishment we can hope for in these circumstances.  Maybe his little folksy radio show will dry up, too, being that there is no substance to it.

I wasn't talking about you.  I was referring to myself.  I forgot to turn off my sockpuppet @ post 86.

One, I don't think the Justice Twins (that is a nice term) can do anything with this one -- it's rather reminiscent in some aspects to the murder of that TN couple. Therefore it could potentially be an indictment against the whole of Black society here in the U.S. -- the perps' friends and family are in some ways just as guilty as he is, so what does that lead the average citizen to think?  They won't want to touch that. The family/friends involvement will be swept under the rug I think.

Depending upon the political wind, the actions of those WA judges will also be swept under the rug, as will Mr. Clemmons previous bad acts -- the guy was a child rapist as well as cop killer; cop killers get some sympathy from some deluded segments of our society...child rapists usually don't. (unless they are Roman Polanski and perform "somber, not rape-rape").

I don't think the Dems will allow Huckabee's dirty linen to not be aired on this one -- and methinks they have some people to cover in this case anyway, so the sham Huckabee is a godsend to them.  That will get aired (and will also be the reason why the Justice Twins will not touch this one).

102 Here's an irony for you: If not for Mike Huckabee's misguided notion of mercy, Mr. Maurice Clemmons would be alive today.

105 ""My word to Mr. Huckabee is man up and own what you did," Jegley said." Did Jegley man up and explain why his office dropped the ball and forgot to file on the new charges when they had a chance?? That was a fairly serious error on their part. "And thank God this lone cop had the balls to confront this monster and take him down. " Yep.

107 What's amusing is how the Lefties think hitting Huckabee on this is somehow a scathing indictment of conservatism.  Let's see:  the guy's not just a RINO he's also unelectable.  They're kindly getting rid of him so we don't have to arrange for sick people to sneeze on him at campaign stops.

As to the issue, we ALL know that coddling criminals is hardly something the Democrats can complain about.

Congratulations and a job well done to the Seattle officer who brought down this mad dog!

109 I'm not defending the Huckster here.  I'm more spreading blame around:  The guy was on probation, and got arrested in WA for armed robbery and 2nd degree rape of a child.  Each time, was let out of jail.

110 No loss either way, but I just hope he was the right guy. And they prosecute the b*st*rds who helped him to the fullest extent of the law.

I'm glad that the "lone officer" was able to put 4 or 5 rounds in the center mass of this A#%hole.   He's going to be late for his beer summit at the White House--indeed ol' Maurice may never show up for his meet with Holder and Obama.  Too damned bad.

Of course down here in Los Angeles some criminal clown--maybe Maurice's cousin, crawled under a house to avoid arrest; they sent a police dog in after him to get him out.  He shot and killed the dog.   I think they lost count of the number of rounds fired at the guy--but he was hit by about a dozen of them.

It's a bad idea to kill 4 cops.  It's also a bad idea to kill one police dog.  Life expectancy in either case isn't very long.

The 15k was put up by somebody likely in police custody already for aiding this scumbag.

The BFF's that helped this asshole should be charges as accomplices, after the fact.

If the Justice Twins (great nickname) show up - there should be a tar and feathers party

And then run them all the way to Canada on a rail. Make it a Deportation Party.

Yeah, and WA is suppose to be a 3 strikes Law state.  It passed overwhelmingly when it was on the ballot.  I can't fathom why he was still out

If the law is anything like CA's three strikes law, I suspect that felonies committed in other states don't count.

118 Who's got dibs on the $15,000 he put up for bail?

That would be the bail bondsman. The front money is non-refundable. And it will not cost the bail bondsman a penny because he got his "court date" and his "sentence" at the same time.

And this time the "sentence" can't be commuted by the Huckster.

This is yet another empirical data point supporting my long held philosophy on jury duty:

If the case is anywhere near close, always vote Guilty.  Let the appeal process sort it out.

Huck's misguided action, and the subsequent failures of prosecutors in AR and judges in WA, demonstrates that there is NO shortage of opportunities for perps to get off down the road.  Even (or maybe especially) the really bad ones.

Glad this is the last we'll be hearing any candidacy talk from him.

121 Hobgoblin:

Depending on the circumstances as the officer saw them, there is no requirement for an officer to give this guy a chance to surrender.

He executed 4 officers.  He was on the run and a known danger to the community.

If the lone officer saw a gun in his hand, and had otherwise IDd him as the bad guy, he was justified in shooting.

On the other hand, if he was not clearly armed, then he would have to make an effort to arrest him.
