Meet The Candidates- UPDATED WITH MUST-READ QUOTE
— LauraW

We're looking for strong challengers. We're looking ahead at what could be a Conservative blowout in 2010. This is an excellent moment to promote our best and get them into office, everywhere.

Going forward, please TELL US when you see a candidate who can confidently and clearly enunciate and defend Conservative principles and who needs some exposure. Tip me, or tip Ace or any of the other cobloggers.

Here is an electrifying address from Lt. Col. Allen West, who would very much like to represent Florida District 22 in the U.S. Congress.

Lt. Col. West's Website.

An excerpt from his Wiki page (fair warning):

While serving in Taji, Iraq on August 20, 2003 as commander of the 2d Battalion 20th Field Artillery, 4th Infantry Division, Lieutenant Colonel West was in charge of the interrogation of an Iraqi police officer who was suspected of having information about planned attacks on American forces. According to the Iraqi police officer, Yehiya Kadoori Hamoodi claimed that during the interrogation, soldiers under West's supervision assaulted him attempting to get him to talk.

The police officer insisted that he did not know anything about planned attacks and was loyal to the United States Army. However, when the detainee didn't talk, Lieutenant Colonel West fired his 9mm pistol close to the man's head and at this point, the man, according to some mainstream media such as CNN (http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/12/12/sprj.nirq.west.ruling/), gave information about a planned ambush, resulting in its being thwarted. According to West, there were no further ambushes on U.S. forces in Taji until he was relieved of command on October 4, 2003.

FRICKIN AWESOME UPDATE: From the CNN article in the Wiki quote. Lt. Col. West's testimony at an Article 32 military hearing:

Asked if he would have act differently if under similar circumstances again, West testified, "If it's about the lives of my soldiers at stake, I'd go through hell with a gasoline can."

Thanks to scott.

1 We need an army of candidates like him. I donated to his campaign even though I don't live in Fla.

9 I think Humpy was warning about the unreliable information that Wiki often contains. But I liked this guy from the minute I heard about what he did in Taji. And I'd like to see some blue blood trust-funded liberal sissy call this guy an oreo. Yeah, I'd like to see that in person.

Posted by: runninrebel at December 03, 2009 06:35 AM (i3PJU)

10 I doubt the technique would be as effective today. These people toiled under Saddam for years, he would shoot them, he would torture them, he would find their families and execute them. I would figure by now they have learned we won't do such things. Hell I heard stories how the Abu Gharib prisoners would beg us not to turn them over to the Iraqi police because they know we are so cupcake soft.

True or not true, that story shows us his character.  He want to protect his people and will do almost anything to do that.  I don't want some waffler in charge of people's lives.

Do or do not.  There is no try.

14 An excerpt from his Wiki page

There's no reference/source for that "assault claim."  Unsurprising. Basement trolls spend a lot of time inserting unsourced negative stuff into Wikipedia entries about conservative people.  Dunno if they're paid by Axelrod, or they do it because they believe...

17 However, when the detainee didn't talk, Lieutenant Colonel West fired his 9mm pistol close to the man's head....

I'm surprised that he wasn't prosecuted. Hell, if the Won had been president then he probably would have been.

18 I would think if this were not true, though, he would have corrected it.

There's a "rule" that people aren't allowed to write/edit their own entry. But if he or his campaign or even one of us removed an unsourced slur, the roving bands of trolls would put it back in.

21 I saw my first Marco Rubio bumper sticker yesterday down here in FL. He's my guy. I'm still waiting to see who's going to run against the idiot Grayson. The Florida Repubs have a golden opportunity to run a cat or a dog against him and win. Hopefully, they'll choose a real conservative, unlike the NY 23 debacle.

22 Rep. Jim Jordan from Ohio.

Look him up.

Posted by: tony at December 03, 2009 06:42 AM (z8Cts)

23 On a similar note I just read an article in the Columbia, SC liberal rag (The State) that a local Irmo businessman will run a third party campaign for gov.

He is a former local football hero, played college ball for Michigan State and briefly played in the NFL.

This will probably guarantee a Dem in the Statehouse in 2011 just in time for redistricting. Especially after the newspapers have been non-stop on jumping on Sanford.

Posted by: Vic at December 03, 2009 06:43 AM (CDUiN)

24 I didn't read the whole wiki entry, so I can't vouch for it but the overall story about Lt Col West's actions is true.

While technically, a mock execution is a war crime, the fallout from it (his career) was a disgrace.

I'll definitely be donating.

25 Unfortunately, I can't vote for him while living out here in Nevada.  On the other hand--I get to vote against Harry Reid this time around, so I got that going for me, which is nice.

Oh, and hopefully the local Repubs will come up with somebody to run against that complete moron Dina Titus.  I can't believe she actually holds an elective office.  I mean, she shouldn't even be sweeping the parking lot at McDonald's.

I like this guy a lot.

As far as other candidates go, here in CT, I've got to support Rob Simmons in the race for Dodd's seat.  The Republican primary contender field seems to be thinning out a bit.  It looks to be a three way race between Schiff, McMahon and Simmons.

Simmons is ex-military (Vietnam) and a former spook.  He knows who the bad guys are and the lengths that they'll go.  I'll admit, that there was a bit of squish as far as his fiscal discipline went in his two terms as Congressman, but in his defense, the entire party was spending money like drunken sailors.

Given Dodd's record, I doubt he can attack Simmons for deficit spending.

Perhaps blogs like this one can actually act in that fashion?

One suggestion though, if any polling/information on the candidate's chance of success is available can we include that? Giving money to a conservative in a 50-50 race is a smart use of our resources, if the candidate has no hope though...

Sholley is an unabashed conservative. This is his second run against Barney, having taken 30% of the vote last time with a green campaign going up against Obama fever. The odds are much better this time.

There is so frigging much ammo to be unloaded on Frank, but it's going to take some money.

by Rep. John Linder R-GA

For the last several years, when people have instructed me that human activity was causing a dangerous increase in global temperatures, my response has been, "Then tell me, what should the temperature be?"  Should it be the temperatures that the planet experienced 1,000 years ago during which Greenland was settled as a farming community and during which wine grapes were grown in Scotland?  Should it be the temperatures of 300 years ago when the Little Ice Age ended the inhabitation of Greenland and the Thames iced over?  Should it be the temperatures of 829 A.D. when the Nile River froze?  No response!

LauraW,

I'm pretty well aquainted with Simmons' record.  He used to represent my district before that commie, Courtney, beat him by like 80 votes.  I suppose it gets back to the never ending debate about how much squish you're willing to swallow.  Personally, I don't give a damn about abortion and his view on it.  From a Constitutional viewpoint, yeah, it should be an issue left to the individual States.  Other than that, meh.  Ditto regarding gay rights/marriage, so I would applaud his position opposing a Federal DOMA.

His positions on health care, defense, 2nd Amendment and illegal immigration are pretty damned good.  I can't see McMahon or Schiff (who I see as a bit Paulian) being anywhere near as good.  Of course, we can all just vote for Dodd.

Uh Oh.  The women are getting nervous.  Oh wait. I'm a woman.

Thank God for men like Lt. Col. West.  I predict that we will be thanking God even more for men like him in the not so distant future.

If he ran for Prez tomorrow I would vote for him.

Palin/Colonel West 2012!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What good is a party if the people who are in it don't support the base?  I want a real party dammit.  Not some sissy ass 'moderate' fuckin panty waste who 'weigh' everything.  If we send them running to the hills, that's fine with me.  It's time the GOP pulled its head out of it's ASS and wake the fuck up.  You had you god damned 'moderate' candidate  McCain, REMEMBER?  Look how ell THAT turned out.  That guy couldn't even defend HIS OWN VP!

I smell 'concern' troll.

184 I shouldn't, but I'll throw out my position on abortion, it shouldn't be performed except to save the life of the Mother, any other reason should be NO! There are millions of good folks that would adopt that child and love them forever.

After exhaustive research (consisting of about five minutes on Bing) I found out who's running against Alan Grayson.

Patricia Sullivan

At fist look, she's just what we need in Washington: a regular Jane. I hope she does well.

Asked if he would have act differently if under similar circumstances again, West testified, "If it's about the lives of my soldiers at stake, I'd go through hell with a gasoline can."

I'd love to see this guy have a successful career in politics.  We need more of his type in the system.  People who know the right decision and make it without worrying about what the lawyer scum might have to say about it.  A few like him would show the limp-dick RINOs in charge of candidate selection that real men can win.

'Nam,

I was adopted myself back in the mid-60's prior to Roe V. Wade.  If abortion had been the law of the land then, I would likely not be here.  That said, I still can't get worked up about the issue, other than saying I believe it belongs to the States.  It's not a deal breaker for me on an otherwise solid candidate.

As long as we don't defend Bush's immigration policy, yes. Ignore the LameSM, look carefully at exactly *when* Bush's ratings went into the toilet, and draw your own conclusions.

195 I am looking at the map of MA-4. Gawd, how gerrymandered can you get? I hope you are right that the blue collar "Portagees" (meant with affection) of New Bedford can outvote the academic pansies of Newton, but I have my doubts.

Brookline is the real problem. But New Bedford and Fall River are where the population is. If Sholley can do well there, he can beat Barney. In related news, MA is likely to lose a Congressional District next census.

196 I emailed my poopstain of a congresswoman a few weeks ago, expressing my strong opposition to the healthcare bill.  Yesterday, I got a response, which I include in its entirety:

Dear Friend:

Sincerely,

Jane Harman
Member of Congress

Attached to the email was a press release from 11/3/09 in which she celebrates her support for the wonderful "deficit neutral" house bill.

It's just a hunch, but I don't think Lt. Col. West would treat his constituents this way.

Question from a guy in a state which has never lost a congresscritter yet: What happens if there are ten reps for MA in the 2010 elections, but only 9 districts for 2012? Which incumbent gets sacked, and how?

I emailed my poopstain of a congresswoman a few weeks ago

Speaking of Jane Harman, did you know that she only won in 1994 by a few hundred votes, which appeared mysteriously?

CA has not lost a congresscritter yet, even though people are leaving the state in droves, because non-voters, legal and illegal, are counted in the Census. The effect is to create "rotten boroughs", where only a few hundred votes swing elections. This in a state of 30 odd million people.

It used to arguably be the best place on Earth to live, but the once Golden State is proving to be crumbling, tarnished brass.

Yup!  Plus, very few people bother to vote.  I've been voting at the same place for over 20 years.  Except for last year's presidential election, I rarely see more than 3 or 4 people in front of me, regardless of time of day.  Last year?  OMG, they were lined up around the block, between the mocha messiah and the gay marriage thing.

#57 - Blaster - The point is, he didn't order his soldiers to participate.  He did it himself.  There were lots of joes that would have been happy to do it; LTC West knew it would get him prosecuted, so he did it himself.  That is the crux of the issue - he took the responsibility himself, knowing it would end his career.

I would like to think I have the moral courage he does, but I'm probably just dreaming.  He was an inspiration to me when his story came out, and when I deployed as a MiTT team chief.  I was hoping back then that I would see him again.

It's damn good to see a real leader and a real man running for office.  He'll get my money.  If he comes back to Atlanta, he'll get my vote.
