Swallowed my distaste due to his NY 23 waffling and the AGW bullshit and decided to give a listen.

This is red meat, and good brain thinkin' stuff too. Altogether it is a fascinating discussion of historical perspectives about a little-discussed aspect of the separation of powers, he's also basically been able to condense the problem down to a very strong, simple set of ideas. How do we win? What is our plan?

He seems to be pretty straightforward. Impeach the president, replace every position possible with a good conservative candidate who takes the threat to America seriously, defund the Ninth Circuit and re-form it from new candidates when they pull their usual bullshit - basically tooth and nails from this point forward. War makes compromises into threats when the opposition (the left) is involved with giving the enemy greater moral consideration than their country itself.  He's basically saying that from this point forward, go to war with the Judiciary when they weaken us, like in approving the trial in NY for KSM. Fire them like Jefferson did.

I love Newt. I had really hoped he'd run for prez in '08. Wouldn't have done any good, though, because, as we all know. the country was sick with the heinous obama fever - a fever so nefarious that it wipes out even the most common-sense brain cells of those afflicted.

Yeah, Newt fucked up in NY23. At least he had the balls to own up to it - the lack of courage being an apparent genetic disorder for libs.

50 Newt grates my gizzard a lot these days.  I'll listen to any number of his speeches, and being a historian myself I appreciate the tone and vantage point--that is, until he invokes Christianity as necessary for a strong America.  Talk about a fucking non-issue!  He's definitely a demagogue-wannabe, and he uses the religious nonsense as a focal point for gathering support.  The tautologically-tinged idea that America is a Christian nation mistakes the plain fact that America is a nation full of Christians, not that it is a Christian nation.  Hell, there were Jews in New Amsterdam years before the Pilgrims arrived.  Plus, I have a hard time taking religious training and piety from a guy who divorced his cancer-ridden wife, rather than doing the decent thing and just waiting until she died.  I couldn't care less about a cross in the desert, but the Ninth Court was right to declare "under God" un-Constitutional; if the founders had wanted that sort of rhetoric supported they would have declared a national religion, but as we all know by now, they didn't do that.  But hey, it's a great way to distract the rubes, isn't it?  Great way to motivate your ignorant base, Newt.  Newt is fast becoming the Jesse Jackson of the conservative movement.

He's one of them.  A member in good standing of the cable tv babblesphere.  I hate cable tv babblers.  They talk for money, and they're not too particular about who signs the checks.  He plays a part on the long running cable tv show called "Crosstalk", where you get payed just for playing, and which has no end.

The thing that really, really impresses me about Newt is his vast grasp on history and ability to share it in such an intelligent, eloquent, and logical way. The man has major brains in a way you won't find in most politicians. Granted, he's a politician. I simply look at what there is to choose from. I could say Krauthammer has major brains, too, but he's never going to run for anything, plus he's got the NY-DC narcissism thing going on.

I don't worship at the alter of Newt. He is as fallible as any man. Einstein was fallible, too - he never bought quantum physics, but man what a brain.

The thing is (to my mind, anyway) he and the other Republican strategists are SO IN LOVE with "the game" (of politics).  These guys LIVE for polls and percentages; they thrive on determining what message "plays well" with which demographic groups; they enjoy coaching their favored candidates about what to say, how to pitch their candidacy, to bring their numbers up in a given target constituency.  All I see is a guy who really, really likes to play a game.  Bright as all get-out, but the target is the WIN.  The core beliefs of the candidate aren't nearly as important as "Can he win?"  

Dunno, maybe that's the way it HAS to be, but it turns me off...  what I want from a candidate is commitment to the principles of our Founders: smaller government, fiscal responsibility, keep your word, focus on what's good for the country (not how to distribute favors to Big Biz/ Big Union/ Big Whatever, so you can get a cushy job on some Board, or as a lobbyist, when you leave office).  "Mr. Smith goes to Washington" in real life, y'know?  Silly of me in this day and age, I guess.
