Merry Christmas Morons - Remember the Troops
— Dave in Texas

Big blue patch of something on the radar out west, but if Central Texas has a white Christmas, I'll eat my hat.

Merry Christmas to all you morons, and to my co-blogging knuckledragging pals too. And while we're offering good wishes, remember those who serve, especially those deployed and away from their families and loved ones. They do what they can to make it feel a little like home every year, but it's just a little. Keep them and their families in your thoughts and prayers.

Thanks guys and gals, you are all truly the best this country has to offer. And thank you to our allies too who also won't be home with their families this Christmas.

4 Thank you DiT. Those of us at home appreciate you for making sure our loved ones are remembered. Things have been rough of late in the 'Stan, so please pray for these men and women. And thanks to all of you serving, or who have served. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas, and a far better 2010, since 2009 has really stunk.

5 Merry Christmas to all!

Watched part of Hannity last night and it showed soldiers receiving care packages from home.  Quite a moving piece.  Tears in my eyes now just remembering it.

God bless the men and women of the United States military, past and present, and their families and loved ones!

Did one of the local T4T gig last week. Turnout was fair, we raised a little bit of money. The Marines in attendance were professional as always and enjoyed our music.

That's one of my favorite gigs to do.

Merry Christmas to all our troops. We love you and hold you in our prayers.

7 Merry Christmas, morons.

And prayers and gratitude for all those on the front lines who aren't able to spend this holiday with their families.

10 I didn't think it would make a difference ....the other day was int he airport and there was a soldier sitting and waiting.  (a good lookin guy and the uniform just adds something too) anyway...I went up to him and said "thank you and merry Christmas".   He lit up like a christmas tree with a smile that was intoxicating.  He extended his hand looked me right in the eye and said "merry Christmas to you too, you made my day"  I don't know how I got the courage to walk up to him but I'm very very glad I did, the exchange made my day too.  Waht I'm trying to say is don't hesitate, the exchange was great for both of us!!!!

11 Thank you all. And hey God, I know I don't talk to ya much, unless it's to tell ya what a shitty job I think you're doing. But look after these folks would ya? After all,, no greater love.....

14 Curious, I make a point of saying a few words of appreciation to the men and women in uniform I see around town.  And I hope and pray if my son is ever sitting alone in an airport somewhere, someone like you will make his day with a kind word or two.

God bless our troops and their families, and keep them safe.

Merry Christmas peoples.

Amen. Please remember our troops as they remember us. Written by one of our own on a Christmas Eve, far from home.

Please read the whole thing. It is well worth the time.

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.
Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
Transforming the yard to a winter delight.

The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.
My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.

The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,
But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear..
Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know, Then the
sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.
My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door just to see who was near.

Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.
A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,
Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.

"What are you doing?" I asked without fear,
"Come in this moment, it's freezing out here!
Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!"
For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts..

To the window that danced with a warm fire's light
Then he sighed and he said "Its really all right,
I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night."
"It's my duty to stand at the front of the line,
That separates you from the darkest of times.

No one had to ask or beg or implore me,
I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before me.
My Gramps died at ' Pearl on a day in December,"
Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas 'Gram always remembers."
My dad stood his watch in the jungles of ' Nam ',
And now it is my turn and so, here I am.

I've not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile.
Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red, white, and blue... an American flag.
I can live through the cold and the being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home.

I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.
I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life with my sister and brother..
Who stand at the front against any and all,
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall.."

" So go back inside," he said, "harbor no fright,
Your family is waiting and I'll be all right."
"But isn't there something I can do, at the least,
"Give you money," I asked, "or prepare you a feast?
It seems all too little for all that you've done,
For being away from your wife and your son."

Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,
"Just tell us you love us, and never forget.
To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone,
To stand your own watch, no matter how long.
For when we come home, either standing or dead,
To know you remember we fought and we bled.
Is payment enough, and with that we will trust,
That we mattered to you as you mattered to us."

20 Ahhh...I remember Xmas in Sinjar back in 2003-2004, assholes launched a couple of rockets at us at night forcing me delay my enjoyment of a much hard earned dinner of greasy homemade local food and a much coveted orange Fanta and a two month old couple of US magazine lol. Thanks asshole badguys for that memory.

22 I don't know if somebody has already posted this, but Xerox has a site you can go to, select a card, fill in your name and hometown, choose a message or write your own, and they'll send it to a random member of our armed forces. It doesn't cost you anything, and you don't even have to register.

Check it out:

This year we have a real treat, my son, Matt the Marine, will be home for christmas for the first time in three years.

As an added bonus, he re-enlisted and got a nondeployable position, the better to stay at home with his wife and daughter.

As an extra special added bonus, he's waiting to see if his cutting score is good enough to make sargent.

I hope he stays safe, and gets to enjoy his family for a long, long time. Jane D'oh, Merry Christmas to you and your Marine. Still prayin your way too. Enjoy the holidays without your in-laws!!

31 Does anyone have a link where us Morons and Moronettes can send an email greeting to our troops? It would be a nice gesture, and it's something positive we could all do during this holiday season.

My most memorable Christmas was when I was deployed along the Korean DMZ. We got 18" of snow on Christmas Eve and, talk about a silent night. We were young and soldiers, far from home and had only the comraderie and special care packages from home. I got a sweet photo of my wife and daughter (wife in her skimpiest bikini) at the beach. Warmed this old grunt's frosty.

Here's to the American serviceman, wherever he and she may be. God bless you all and Merry Christmas.

Big blue patch of something on the radar out west, but if Central Texas has a white Christmas, I'll eat my hat.

To all the troops still deployed:

I know what it's like being overseas and deployed to a combat zone during the holidays away from family.
During my Army career, I spent more time outside the country, (in peace and war) than stateside.

In the last 8 years the United States Army has done an incredible job with less Soldiers and fewer casualties than any military in a major war.

You're doing a great job, and it cannot be said enough.

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy and safe New Year.

Take care,

39 My best and my love to all the troops, both veterans and those currently serving. Without all of you, we would not live in the great country we live in today with the freedom to celebrate Christmas and everything else in our lives. Have a very merry Christmas and a safe and happy new year. Keep kicking butt for the best country in the world. Much love and Christmas wishes, Rum
