Monk Series Finale Thread
— Ace

At 9pm, on the USA Network.

The end of a two parter. If you care, but haven't been watching, Monk's been poisoned (slow-acting, of course) and will die in two days if the type of poison is not determined. (Something that can only happen if the killer is found.)

Meanwhile, he's on the search for the killers of his wife, killed in a car bomb 12 years ago, an event that shattered him and turned him into the quivering wreck he is today. (Well, actually, he was always a quivering wreck, but his wife's murder sent him around the bend.)

I guess I should also tell you it's already made clear that a judge played by Craig T. Nelson is involved, and is either taking orders from or giving orders to a mysterious six-fingered-man.

Anyway, end of Monk. I'll miss 'im.

Spoliers: Are mostly permitted, I guess, except regarding the Six Fingered Man.

Look, they've already announced who "The Judge" is. And we know -- this is not exactly a hard thing to figure out -- Monk will figure it all out. But I guess go easy on exactly how he figures it out.

And they seem to be withholding the identity of the Six Fingered Man, so don't expose that.

Um... It was also made clear, unless you're very dense or don't watch the show much, that Randy is moving to the NYC area to be with his long-time flirt Sharona.

No Six-Fingered Man... I thought he was somehow involved. Movigique tells me yeah, he was, but he was killed like two seasons ago.

So no Six Fingered Man in this case. He's already dead

1 A good series.  I've always like Tony Shalhoub ever since he played Antonio from Wings.  Absolutely hilarious comic actor.

6 Monk?

I'll be doing a 8-part series on the show and it's importance to American culture and actors around the world. A don't miss tear-jerker.

7 While Monk is looking for his wife's killer, perhaps he can be on the lookout for Obama's birth certificate if he's up to it...

8 @1 "I've always liked Tony Shalhoub ever since he played Antonio from Wings." I agree. Too bad he's also a raging Lefty. But if I let political ideology totally determine my entertainment choices the pickin's would be pretty slim.

When they steal, they steal from the best.  D.O.A. (slow acting poison), six fingered man (The Princess Bride) and Craig T. Nelson (I loved Coach).

Gotta  love those guys that try to find their wive's murderers.

Richard Kimball found the one armed man, mainly due to an incompetant detective.

The Juice will find the guy who nearly decapitated Nicole. Sadly he's got to get that time done for kidnapping.Careful Juice, that near decapitation guy seems extremely powerful and extremely dangerous. Beef yourself up while you're in the can.

21 O/T (hat tip RedState).  Pretty depressing if you ask me.  Seems as though the Senate Repubs may be starting to get soft on the gawd forsaken healthcare bill...at least that's the way Kyl seems to be leaning.  Amendments will bring 'em around.  Just wait & see.  I know they can't stop it, even if they wanted to...but for chrissake's, put up a kicking, screaming, bloody-fisted fight for the American people.

http://tinyurl.com/yhec7gv

In response to the question, “what is your strategy, to the extent you can share it,” Kyl said, “actually, I think we can be fairly upfront about it. Our strategy is not actually to delay and not take votes.” He added, “our strategy is to have a lot of good amendments and highlight the problems in the bill,” and “it is not our strategy to somehow slow things down.”

Posted by: exceller at December 04, 2009 05:05 PM (Z7Znk)

30 #22, disagree.  Amendments of the the right kind are how you kill a bill.  You propose improvements, espeically ones that will never be accepted, highlight the extant bill's horrors in the process, and go like that; no amendments, and you may not have time to firm up opposition to the maximum extent possible.

I've heard Monk's next job will be locating and cleaning all the world's CO2...

It is a pic of Michelle at the Christmas tree ceremony the other night.  She clearly has a penis.  It is a Getty image so it isn't photoshopped and I don't know how to do that anyway.  Plus I'm not talking a pleat that 'could be a penis if you scrunch your eyes'.  I'm talking, a big penis in her pants next to the zipper.

75

(SIGH) I just got through going over the Palin / "Birther" thread down below..and I have to say that Ace has sort of followed Allahpundit down the Rabbit Hole..somewhat.

The "science" on this is not settled..and those of us who think a bit more info should be revealed are not flat-Earther, incurious types, but precisely the opposite. We want to know more (Hell, I want the temperature data realeased, too.). Diogenes laid out a first-person scenario showing that state birth records do not necessarily reflect reality.

It IS possible, because documentation proffered is not probative, that Barry is not a natural-born citizen. BUT..and it's a big but (not big butt, like M'chelle's)...the simple fact that Barry (or more likely his cultists) have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars fighting release of the "real" birth certificate should raise some flags as to the possibilty that there is something on it that goes against the narrative.

Ace, you yourself, have written about the possibilty that Ayers may have been a ghost writer on Dreams of My Father..and that there may be a cover up.

All this begs the question as to why the original birth certificate has not been released. You asked the rhetorical question about how do we know that Palin wasn't born in Germany. I must have missed the claim that she was.

Was she asked?..and if so, did she refuse to release any records that pertain to her birth?

With one stroke of a pen, this could all be settled. Why hasn't that been doen?

Posted by: Buddy Bizarre at December 04, 2009 06:05 PM (Yn2A0)

77 A lot of things are possible. I am tired of being lectured as to what is merely "possible." It's possible Sarah Palin was born in Czechoslovakia. There is a principle in law called "the burden of going forward," that is, to be allowed to argue certain things, you have to establish some minimum level of proof for it. I don't see that met here. I will concede, in the interests of comity, that these things are *possible* since they are not disproven. You can continue telling people these things are possible and are not disproven. Fine. That is your right. It is also other people's prerogative to not waste their time on things that merely *could* be possible, as any ten thousand unlikely things *could* be possible. There is not a scrap of evidence for any of this except the negative type; i.e., no one's disproven it.

Posted by: ace at December 04, 2009 06:08 PM (jlvw3)

78 Huh. I was glad to see the Sharona character go. I didn't like the way she treated Monk at all.

Posted by: pajama momma at December 04, 2009 06:08 PM (275r1)

79 I'm sorry I put it that way, that "I am tired of being lectured about what may be possible." That was stated too negatively, too assholishly. What I meant was, and how I should have phrased it, was more like: "You cannot just keep putting forward things for which there is no evidence, which can only merely not be disproven, and be surprised when people tune out and decline to follow you on what appears for all the world to be a snipe hunt." I realize those on that side of things are frustrated by people like me. Well, I don't share your assumptions, and ergo, I do not share your enthusiasms.

86 There was a great episode where Sharona confessed a fear -- a fear of elephants -- and Monk, afraid of everything of course, laughed at her and scoffed and told her to "Suck it up." For the rest of the episode Sharona did passive-aggressive, or rather aggressive-aggressive, stuff to Monk, pushing his buttons, and told him "S.I.U. You know what that stands for don't you?" One of the best episodes.

Posted by: ace at December 04, 2009

Ace, I assume this is directed at me..if not, I'm a douche and you are free to tell everyone so...BUT...I did not make any assumptions. I merely stated that the fact that Barry is fighting against releasing his birth certificate should raise some suspiscions.

Posted by: beedubya at December 04, 2009 06:20 PM (AnTyA)

88 A friend and I were just talking about that episode, Ace. Very funny.

Posted by: Darcy at December 04, 2009 06:23 PM (cnJcX)

89 Well, it may raise suspicions. It may raise suspicions there's something embarrassing on his birth certificate. It may also just indicate he wants to fight every disclosure like this because he wants the right to not disclose anything, like his college transcripts. My friend, in the FBI, related a story about a fellow FBI guy who'd been asked to deliver a follow-up questionare to Hillary Clinton, something about Whitewater. Some follow up of something in a deposition. Not life or death stuff. She was pissed because she didn't want to asnwer questions at all. She resented it. She said something like "Okay, I'll answer that stuff," and then before he left, said, "Tell you what, I'll answer you now." So he took out a pen, even though he was really just delivering the follow-up questions. She said to him, very evenly, "Question 1. When you say you did not know the billing code for Whitewater until June of 1987, can you remember who told you the blling code? Answer: FUCK YOU. Question 2. How many hours a week did you discuss Whitewater with Webb Hubbel? Answer: FUCK YOU." And on for like four questions, until the FBI guy said "Okay, maybe you should just fill out the questionaire." I do not believe it is beyond imagining that Obama's answers to all questions about his background are like HRC's: FUCK YOU. Why? Fuck you, that's why.

Posted by: ace at December 04, 2009 06:26 PM (jlvw3)

90 I think he should be forced, or pressured, to release the birth certificate. This concerns a constiutional prequisite. He has no right to privacy as regards this. I agree on that. For precedent's sake, he should release it; either we have prerequsites as to age and natural born citizenship or we don't. But yeah, I can't get too excited beyond that, because I think the weight of the evidence is that he was born in Hawaii, so there's nothing super-important in there. It's really just about precedent and procedure for me, which is important, but people usually don't get too worked up about precedent and procedure.

Posted by: ace at December 04, 2009 06:29 PM (jlvw3)

91

because I think the weight of the evidence is that he was born in Hawaii,

I simply cannot agree with you here..and that's why I cannot criticize the birthers. There are circumstances...with precedent...that demonstrate how you can have a COLB, but not be a natural born citizen. But!!!!...my, and many others', issue is WHY he has not authorized release...and why he has spent quite a bit of money fighting legal requests to do so.

There is a pattern of hiding his background. Why?

Does anyone remember the episode where he was the foster dad for that little boy? THAT was the best episode evah.

95 there are two contemporaneous birth announcements in Hawaiian newspapers. I know, I know: You can postulate reasons why that should be. I can postulate a lot of things. I'm currently writing a sci-fi novel (no, I am, that's why I'm posting a lot, I'm avoiding the book). I can spin a lot of reasons I make up. You have real evidence for these things and on the other side only your claims about what MIGHT have happened which would explain these things. You have no positive evidence. You only have negative evidence, "You can't prove it didn't happen this way." OJ's defenders could explain away all the evidence against him, too. This is not a difficult thing to do. There are 40 books on the JFK assassination explaining away, for example, Oswald's defection to the USSR. But evidence is evidence. We have a COLB. We have officials from Hawaii saying the COLB is accurate and reflects the information on the long-form. We have birth announcements in the press. We have historic evidence indicating Obama's mom lived in Hawaii before the birth, and after it. The contention being made is "Maybe she went to Kenya or some other country for the last month of her pregnancy." Well... um... okay, again, this is something I cannot disprove, but "maybes" and "ifs" are not evidence. The only evidence you have is that obama is fighting these disclosures. But I can explain that one bit of evidence away rather easily.

I dislike Obama, too. But let's get real here.

His people and the media have provided adequate information on his background, including photocopies of his birth certificate.

Either you weren't paying attention, or you ignored what you saw, or you failed to comprehend the significance of what you were seeing, presumably because those documents didn't conform with your screwy beliefs, or because your eyes glazed over and your brain shut down while that information was being shown

In any case, whatever.

We have officials from Hawaii saying the COLB is accurate and reflects the information on the long-form

No. No we do not. That is the point. The following are the ONLY two statements released by the Hawai'i Dept. of Records regarding Barry's birth certificate:

1.) Dr. Fukino, Director of the Department of Health on Oct. 31, 2008:

“Therefore, I as Director of Health for the State of Hawai‘i, along with the Registrar of Vital Statistics who has statutory authority to oversee and maintain these type of vital records, have personally seen and verified that the Hawai‘i State Department of Health has Sen. Obama’s original birth certificate on record in accordance with state policies and procedures.”

2.) Dr. Fukino, Director of the Department of Health on July 27, 2009:

“I, Dr. Chiyome Fukino, Director of the Hawaii State Department of Health, have seen the original vital records maintained on file by the Hawai‘i State Department of Health verifying Barack Hussein Obama was born in Hawai‘i and is a natural-born American citizen. I have nothing further to add to this statement or my original statement issued in October 2008 over eight months ago.”

Notice the vagueness and lack of coincidence in the language. Nowhere is it mentioned that there is a certificate of birth  (we're getting into minutiae here, but, still it matters) showing that Barry was born in Hawai'i. .

I was not a Sharona fan.  She was mean to Monk and I hated how she dressed.  But there are a lot of Sharona fans out there (if you read the Monk fan web sites).

They dropped her because she tried to play hardball to get more money.  I think it was around the time the show was nominated for an Emmy or something.  Anyway, I guess there were hard feelings so they dropped her.

I think the episode where Monk is hanging out with his annoying neighbor (the game show episode?) is around when she was in a contract dispute with them.

120 I loved Sharona. They dropped her because she and Stottlemeyer and Disher (I met Disher, btw -- I told him they were turning his character from merely dim into RETARDED; he said "I've kind of noticed that") wanted more money. They were "renegotiating," I think, basically wanting more money even though they'd signed a contract for less. But the show was a hit, so... standard, really. They struck. Basically the production company threatened to fire them, or replace them, or something like that. Stottlemeyer and Discher came to terms; Sharona held out. They let her go.

Posted by: ace at December 04, 2009 07:32 PM (jlvw3)

121 Sharona was awesome. She wasn't "mean" to Monk. She was trying to get this retard to behave normally. She had been his nurse for four years already before the show started. (She began nursing him after his wife's death.) Four years in and she was kind of annoyed by his schtick, and she was never really a patient person to begin with. She and Randy had a funny/cutesy flirtation, all put-downs and stuff.

132 For the rest of the episode Sharona did passive-aggressive, or rather aggressive-aggressive, stuff to Monk, pushing his buttons, and told him "S.I.U. You know what that stands for don't you?"

One of the best episodes.

Posted by: ace at December 04, 2009 10:19 PM (jlvw3)

Correctamundo.  Nada passive about Sharona.  And pajama momma isn't alone: loved Sharona because she loved Monk but didn't coddle his fears or act like "poor baby."  Natalie's great but Sharona was bettah.

One episode she was talking to Monk's brother, challenging him to come out of his house telling him "Monk's afraid all the time, he doesn't let that stop him, what does he have that you don't?"  and his brother looked at her and very simply said "He has you" and Sharona got teary eyed.   Tough love is what she was about.

134 epsisodes where people *involved* in the killing were caught or killed were the NYC one -- I think that wasn't the six fingered man, but a bomb-maker hired by him -- and the frame-up/monk's dead episode, where I don't remember anyone but Scott Glen.

Posted by: ace at December 04, 2009 07:46 PM (jlvw3)

135 I did like her slutty outfits. But I dont' think you saw a lot of Sharona ones. Monk could be a real dick to her. That was prominent in several. And she did a lot for the team. She's actually pretty nice. It's just where Natalie kind of begs and just jumps up and down when she gets upset, Sharona insults him.

Posted by: ace at December 04, 2009 07:50 PM (jlvw3)

136 Funny exchange: NATALIE: "I'm hiring you, Mr. Monk. Here's a check for one thousand dollars." MONK: "No... I know for a fact that check isn't going to clear." NATALIE: "Of course it will clear. I just deposited your paycheck. I can cover it." MONK: "I Know for a fact that MY check isn't going to clear." NATALIE: "Mr. Monk, you wrote me a bad check? How could you DO that?" MONK: "I could just as easily ask you the same thing." Anyway, Monk did similar stuff with Sharona. She just got a little angrier when he did.

Love Monk, love the show, it has been an island of goodness in a sea of TV Suck.

As far as Obama's Birth Certificate goes...I'm not a birther, but I have to say that the US Constitution lists three qualifications for US President:  natural born citizenship, 35 years old, and US resident for at least the past 14 years.

If I have to show my birth certificate to prove that I am legally eligible to obtain a drivers license, then why shouldn't Presidential candidates have to show their birth certificate as a matter of Standard Operating Procedure? I'm not saying just Obama, I'm saying ALL of them should have to produce proof that they are qualified (according to the Constitution) for the office of the Presidency.

You want to be President?  Let's see your birth certificate (which would cover both the natural born AND age requirements) as well as your proof of 14 year residency.

Ending the show was the right choice.  Lately, my wife and I have seen too many goofy, predictable, fomulaic episodes.  Better to go out while the show is on top than to wait untill it becomes a joke.  I think the writers were tapped out.

That being said, the series will stand the test of time.  Shaloub has the rare talent of creating a insecure, selfish, inconsiderate, pathetic  nutcase that is also a funny lovable character.  The show was a hit with "Sharrona" and "Natalie" IMO surpassed her.  We will be looking for reruns we have missed to enjoy.

Speaking of Inside Baseball, did anybody else get the joke in the episode of House recently where he showed up to an 80's themed party dressed like the 1880's?

He was in the 80's video for Annie Lennox's Walking On Broken Glass, in which he was wearing 1880's type clothing.

So he went to the party wearing what he wore in the 1980's.  Ha.

Posted by: Picky at December 04, 2009 09:04 PM (H5kz4)

155 Trudy was clearly younger than Adrian.  According to her gravestone she was born in 1962 and died in 1997.  Has the show really implied that they were similarly aged?  That would be a stretch.

Of course, maybe Adrian went to college later than usual because of his, um, condition.

***

This was a nice episode, and I'm going to miss the show.  I wish they could have gotten John Turturro to return as Monk's brother, though, because his two episodes remain my favorites.  His performances as Ambrose Monk were so touching, and it would have been nice to check in with him at least once more before the end.

Finally, I loved Sharona, but there's just something about Traylor Howard that makes my jaw hit the floor.  She's just MILF-tastic, and I hope she'll work again, but as a woman over 40 who's not really a big star, I fear her days are probably numbered.

But that's okay, because that means she might be easy pickings sometime soon, if you know what I mean.

164 there was an episode when Snoop Dogg and two goons from his posse showed up. Monk was terrified. And then, suddenly, he began acting cool and normal. Even when introduced to Snoop Dogg's goons, "Silent Killer" and "Snake the Executioner." Started making jokes like "It ain't braggin' if other people are sayin' it, you feelin' me, Snake?" At the end of the scene he agreed to represent Snoop Dogg. But when Snoop Dogg left, Monk said, "That was a close one. I didn't know how he would react when I turned him down." He was so terrified of the brown people he had simply blanked out entirely, gone to his "special place," so the person we saw wasn't him but some kind of schizoid personality who could deal with Snoop in cool way.

Leland got married to his Trudy.  Would it really have been so bad if Randy went back to NJ to be with Sharona but they didn't overtly state that they would be living together out of wedlock?

They also kind of implied last week that Natalie and her beau were probably going to move in together without any overt references to engagement or marriage.

When did shacking up become a good enough happy ending, as far as happy endings go?

I know, I know...

Posted by: Kensington at December 04, 2009 10:26 PM (BlBnA)

167 Kensington, I think they just did that because they couldn't have three weddings in five weeks. So two of them are obviously headed to the altar. They just can't marry them NOW. It wold be a little suspicious that all of a sudden four of the main characters get married.

Posted by: ace at December 04, 2009 10:28 PM (jlvw3)

168 Yeah, maybe it is too much to think that San Francisco bound Adrian Monk wouldn't fall for the Hopenchange, but there's no way Leland Stotlemayor would have.  Come on!

Posted by: Kensington at December 04, 2009 10:28 PM (BlBnA)

169 ...almost as if everyone knew there was a series finale coming up. I didn't catch the suggestion that Natalie and her boyfriend were living togehter or planned to.

Posted by: ace at December 04, 2009 10:29 PM (jlvw3)

170 No, no, I'm not asking for a whole slew of weddings, but couldn't Randy move back to NJ and still maintain his own separate residence whilst courting Sharona like a gentleman?

I know, I know...  I said it was my one tedious note of social con disappointment.

Posted by: Kensington at December 04, 2009 10:30 PM (BlBnA)

171 Not Leland, no. Leland really hates hippies. And he's got that cop-mustache that is virtually a GOP Party ID card.

Posted by: ace at December 04, 2009 10:30 PM (jlvw3)

172 The Natalie and her boyfriend stuff came up last week while they were grocery shopping, unless my memory is completely messed up.

Posted by: Kensington at December 04, 2009 10:31 PM (BlBnA)

173 Randy had been courting her for months. Long distance, but courting. Weekends and stuff. He wasn't interviewing for that job for "the last couple of months" for no reason.

Posted by: ace at December 04, 2009 10:31 PM (jlvw3)

174 I might be amenable for a twist ending in which we learn that Leland has trapped his new wife (the lovely but modestly plus sized Trudy) in a basement hole.

Now that might have been the best ending ever.

175 Dark.

Posted by: Darcy at December 04, 2009 10:35 PM (cnJcX)

176 the creepy thing is that Monk's daughter isn't his daughter, she's a younger version of his wife having half of her genes. I don't want to creep people out but in real life it would take him about a month to feel non-fatherly feelings towards her.

Posted by: ace at December 04, 2009 10:35 PM (jlvw3)

177 I know it's not sudden, Ace.  I just don't want them shacking up.  Separate addresses, and then a proper wedding.  Otherwise, they will crater civilization, I know it.

Posted by: Kensington at December 04, 2009 10:35 PM (BlBnA)

178 Yeah...I noticed the potential landmines about Trudy's daughter, too.  I just didn't want to give voice to it, because it's just too terrifying to consider.  Hopefully, Natalie will see the signs before Mollie has to get a restraining order.

Posted by: Kensington at December 04, 2009 10:38 PM (BlBnA)

179 Nah. They handled it just right. Trudy's irreplaceable.

Darkly awesome, you mean.

183 Ace Monk-- This is a guy who can't look at a naked statue. It's hard to imagine him having sex with Trudy. Quite a few people were pushing the Natalie/Adriane romance theory. Not me. It messes with his psychology, to quote Tim Burton of another detective.

Posted by: moviegique at December 04, 2009 10:44 PM (1y5Vr)

184 Hey, you know what else we could use?  A video game thread in which I can lament how Call of Duty:  Modern Warfare 2 jumps the shark into cynical, anti-military poseurdom and moral equivalency between terrorists and American special forces.

It's douchetastic.

On the other hand, Batman: Arkham Asylum, my personal game of the year, has no such trouble maintaining a clear sense of right and wrong when it comes to murderous villains.

Posted by: Kensington at December 04, 2009 10:45 PM (BlBnA)

185 Agree with you, moviegique. No way is Monk having sex. Ever. Poor guy.

Posted by: Darcy at December 04, 2009 10:49 PM (cnJcX)

186 OK, Kensington, you keep talking. I'm taking Darcy upstairs.

Posted by: moviegique at December 04, 2009 10:51 PM (1y5Vr)

187 I would be curious to see how OCD people have sex.  Could be awesome.  Could be depressing.

Probably depressing.

Posted by: Kensington at December 04, 2009 10:54 PM (BlBnA)

188 He fears brown people, too.

Posted by: ace at December 05, 2009 02:17 AM (jlvw3)

Would respectfully but emphatically disagree w/ this.  Three proofs:

One episode (involving some marathon) had him meeting three of the marathon staffers and the last one just happened to be black.  They made quite clear it was the lack of availability of a wipe till staffer # 3 that was the problem, only all three staffers took great offense at his supposed racism and he spent the rest of the episode trying to make up for the unintended diss.

Another ep had a little scene with a criminal in a jail w/ dreads and one was sticking out in the kitchen.  Again, a neatness issue (Sharona: "My boss has a jones for neatness; humor him" - Monk: "It's my jones") not a race issue.  Later in the ep:  a white convict of whom Monk is terrified tells him "You're gonna wish you were never born" - Monk: "I'm way ahead a ya."

The Snoop Dogg ep (one of my faves since it has the "Monk rap" which is hilarious plus I like Snoop) has him afraid of a guy he knows is a former con and whose name is (wait for it) Murderuss.  Again: not the race but the perceived danger.   He interacts w/ normal (i.e. noncriminal) blacks the same way as he treats normal (noncriminal) whites: with plenty of wipes and lots of distrust.

And what about that nurse who replaced Sharona?  She was great, and Monk had no problem w/ her race, only her eating of his carefully ordered foods unevenly.

Posted by: no one you know at December 04, 2009 10:55 PM (b0sdZ)

189 I imagine it would be much like that scene from Demolition Man.

John Spartan: Look, Huxley, why don't we just do it the old-fashioned way?
Lenina Huxley: [stands up, shocked] Eeewww, disgusting! You mean... *fluid transfer*?

Posted by: Xoxotl at December 04, 2009 10:57 PM (j88uA)

190 Well, I'm kind of kidding. I do think he's a little uncomfortable with, let us say, "urban" looking blacks.

Posted by: ace at December 04, 2009 10:58 PM (jlvw3)

191 Plus doesn't Monk have like 60 things he's afraid of and brown people di'n't make the list; go figure.
But the coup de gras: if he were truly a racist the writers knew nobody could like him.   OCD is forgivable in TV of today.  Racism ain't. The quickest and laziest way a writer can make a character a bad character (or at minimum a bad dude a la usual suspects) is to have him express racism in any way shape or form.

Posted by: no one you know at December 04, 2009 11:00 PM (b0sdZ)

192 Look, when Snoop and his goons show up, are you telling me that none of the gag at all, the look of abject terror on monk's face, has to do with his lizard-brain attitudes about race and danger? NONE of that pop-eyed slack-jawed look is about race?

Posted by: ace at December 04, 2009 11:02 PM (jlvw3)

193 Posted by: ace at December 05, 2009 02:58 AM (jlvw3)

Oops, cross post.   Waaall....at risk of being a devil's advocate let's say "dangerous looking" urban characters of any race.   In the jail episode he was much more afraid of the four white cons in the yard than the (also con) kitchen character w/ the dreads.   And IIRC wasn't there a whole room full of mixed race cons in the library/TV area  which caused not a ripple of discomfort?

Posted by: no one you know at December 04, 2009 11:04 PM (b0sdZ)

194 NONE of that pop-eyed slack-jawed look is about race?

Posted by: ace at December 05, 2009 03:02 AM (jlvw3)

Can't say for sure but look at how he acts w/ the (granted, not enough of them) black characters who don't have names like Murderuss.  Like the police officers or even the aforementioned cons in the library.  They look like GED students and (again IIRC) he ain't the least bit afraid of them.

Posted by: no one you know at December 04, 2009 11:07 PM (b0sdZ)

195 He didn't know his name was Murderous when he walked in the door. He introduced himself later.

Posted by: ace at December 04, 2009 11:08 PM (jlvw3)

196 I know what you're saying but I do think they mean him to have old-fashioned "uptight white guy" fears about race. He's ashamed of them, he's not a "racist,' but yeah, black people wig him out a little. Re: the wiping of the hands during the marathon episode that's a good example. He begins babbling apologies over that. Because the guy is black.

Posted by: ace at December 04, 2009 11:10 PM (jlvw3)

197 Just checked the ep and to my surprise you're right, he was uncomfortable from the minute he saw him.   In fairness Snoop did look rawtha stereotypically gangsta right down to the scowling entourage but it could be taken either way.   I do think that if Monk were overtly racist in any pattern of behavior (displaying fear with cops etc.) the character wouldn't be liked.

Posted by: no one you know at December 04, 2009 11:18 PM (b0sdZ)

198 that's a good example. He begins babbling apologies over that. Because the guy is black.

Posted by: ace at December 05, 2009 03:10 AM (jlvw3)

Made me smile cause the look-o-death the three staffers gave him would give anyone aphasia.  Plus, if I knew someone thought I just did a very racist thing (even if I didn't), and I were a nervous nellie I'd prolly babble like that too.  Heh.  That ep was most uncomfortable.

I would be curious to see how OCD people have sex.

I'm guessing it would be like anything else they do:  the same thing over and over and over ad infinitum.   When you consider that sex is basically rhythmic and repetitious movement, OCD'ers should be pretty good at it.

The difficult part would be to get them to stop the motion.

200 It was a good close to the show. I hate final episodes where the cast breaks the "fourth wall", and to their credit they didn't.

201 Ooh, I didn't catch the significance of Adrian sleeping in the middle of his bed finally.  Oh, that's lovely.

202 "Hey.... what about Stargate Universe mid-season finale??"

Actually, I gotta say it was the best episode so far.  Colonel Young finally shows some real balls, though perhaps not in a way everyone will like, heh.  At least one pretty damn major change to the show, though not the one you'd expect from the first half of the episode.

Anyone who saw Action Jackson already knew that. But no, seriously, I thought the same thing. For a comic actor he can really do the Powerful Accomplished Villain thing well.

Newhart pulled it off, though.  Best finale ever.

206

Yeah, Newhart had the very best series finale moment ever. Monk's was just a clean one with a good sense of closure.

And it's beyond imagining that the Disher of the series would have ever become chief of police. His retardedness was one of the worst things about the show.    Count me in as another Psych fan.
