Nopenhagen: China Says No Chance of Accord
— Ace

Yes, I am currently praising Russians for hacking and leaking files that prove Anglo-American lies, and China for refusing to sign agreements with us.

Oh, and also France, for defending capitalism against socialist assault.

China has told participants in the UN climate change talks that it sees no possibility of achieving an operational accord this week, an official involved in the Copenhagen talks says.

...

The official, who asked not to be identified, says China is instead suggesting issuing "a short political declaration of some sort", but it is not clear what that will say.

My suggestion: "Global warming is so bad bad bad bad we really have to sit down and think about how bad bad bad bad bad it is, at least for a good five or six years."

...

Earlier Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said it was possible that there would be progress on other issues such as emission cuts during the next day or so.

"I have a sense that as more heads of government arrive here in Copenhagen, that we will make some more progress. But can I just say, as I said yesterday, success at this Copenhagen conference is by no means guaranteed," he said.

That's what I've generally found in my short career in politics -- the more parties you have at the table, the easier it is to reach fundamental agreement on important issues. (The politics of website management I mean -- no, I'm sure not runnin' for nothin'.)

Yup, that is what I've found.

Meanwhile US President Barack Obama has called for an "operational accord" - essentially a political agreement with teeth that can get countries working to cut or curb their greenhouse gas emissions while a more formal and binding treaty is hammered out in 2010.

"Agreement with teeth." But not an actual "formal and binding treaty."

I have usually thought a treaty or contract was, in fact, an "agreement with teeth," and anything short of that was "just horeshittin' around," but I see now Captain Wonderful has discovered a non-binding binding non-treaty treaty.

It Is With Minimum Regret... that I recommend this piece by Rand Simberg on risk vs. uncertainty and cost vs. regret.

Another crazy item:

Militants in Iraq have used $26 off-the-shelf software to intercept live video feeds from U.S. Predator drones, potentially providing them with information they need to evade or monitor U.S. military operations.
....
The militants use programs such as SkyGrabber, from Russian company SkySoftware. Andrew Solonikov, one of the software's developers, said he was unaware that his software could be used to intercept drone feeds. "It was developed to intercept music, photos, video, programs and other content that other users download from the Internet -- no military data or other commercial data, only free legal content," he said by email from Russia.

It is not lost on me that numerous RINO's also would love to have this cash pumping mechanism at their disposal to rip off the people. The GOP needs a cleansing, the RINO's need to be replaced with men and women who lead on principal and who can project those principals in such a way that it becomes a magnet for the millions of Americans who are at the end of their ropes with these political ruses, designed to make us indentured slaves. Be of America, not the world, strive to be the best you can be, innovate and excel and then share with the world the fruits of our labor, like the good old days.None of that happens with the con men and women that we have running the country, they all need to be purged. China and Russia to a degree, get it on this climate change nonsense, we need to get it back.It pisses me off to state that fact, it's all upside down and backwards.

Maybe Israel's government believes in AGW, but I doubt her people are all so stupid.  The numbskulls in our govt are buying into every myth they find convenient, from AGW to Keynesian economics, regardless of what people think.  What belief exists among normal folks in the US is created by propaganda filled with lies, largely government sponsored.  Governments use whatever story suits their agenda.  The Nazis sent "scientists" all over the world to find "proof" that all human accomplishment was attributable to Aryans, and they certainly did their jobs well - conjuring up evidence wherever on earth they looked.  Who is still fooled now that there is no big government budget propping up that nonsense?

32 Of course, before we give the Chicoms and Ruskies too much credit, let's not forget that even if AGW were real and bound to kill us all, they still would say it wasn't real.  Their leaders don't care any more about the facts than ours do.  China needs lots of coal plants, lots of manufacturing, and other carbon spewing activity.  Russia needs to sell carbon fuels.  They're not on the side of truth and justice except by accident.  They remain the enemies that they have been since their respective communist revolutions.

That's Ob+ama's plan.  By it not being a real treaty, he can bypass the Senate having to approve it.  He can have the EPA put out some ridiculous rules and defend by claiming the agreement forced him to do it.  He protects himself from the Senate rejecting a treaty and he protects them from ratifying a treaty then having to face their constituents with it AND Ob+amacare.

As soon as he took office, Obama disregarded contract law usurping the auto industry into a nationalized entity, disregards constitutional separation of powers between branches of government to grant the potus illegitimate rights to spend tax funds without Congressional consideration, and this latest international pose is just another down his slippery slope into global marxism.

Hey, I'm more worried about "agreements". He can make presidential agreements and use the EPA to regulate the country into them. Treaties have to be passed by congress, ratified. He would never get a treaty passed hence he WANTS and "agreement with teeth."

51 Three thoughts....

1)  Remember Obama's last "star turn" in Copenhagen, when he rode in to win the Olympics for Chicago?  Yeah....Rio's still partying over that one, I hear.

2)  It's a weird, weird world when the Russians, Chinese and the French get together to save the world from third world kleptocrats.

and

3)  I'll take global warming (or gerbil worming, whatever it is they're agitated about) a hell of a lot more seriously when alarmists like Al Gore and Prince Charles use Skype or Vonage to hold their conferences instead of heading out to some party spot on private planes and/or limos with an entourage.  I'll bet the Goracle's carbon footprint for this trip alone is bigger than mine for the entire year....but he's the environmentalist and I'm just some dumb sap in flyover country, right?

Posted by: bigpinkfluffybunny at December 17, 2009 04:38 AM (KWhJd)

52 My Public International Law professor describes a "treaty with teeth" as one that expressly provides authority for other countries to punish any breach. Many treaties nowadays say that countries will do a lot of things, but don't authorize much in the way of punishment for breach.

It seems like what Obama wants is to give other countries permission to punish the US if we decide in the future not to do what Obama tells us to do now. It's a way for him to make his domestic agenda more permanent, I think.

Posted by: JohnJ at December 17, 2009 04:39 AM (QhemS)

53 It looks like Kevin Rudd is hinting that nothing happens till Obama gets there with a bag of money, then depending on the bag's size, we'll see what happens.
Of course, President B+ can't wait to find another way to spend money, reduce our standing in the world, and insert himself into the front of the line to receive shiny baubles, accolades and prizes. And MEchelle can bring her staff of 35 ladies in waiting along to help her with her everyday needs.

54 Reactionary, when you say: Before we give the Chicoms and Ruskies too much credit, let's not forget that even if AGW were real and bound to kill us all, they still would say it wasn't real. Playing on the hypothetical is simply playing into the big con. AGW is not real, not in the sense of a doomsday that is caused by man or should I say industries. It is totally false, proof has been provided, data has been erased and certain countries see it for what it is, an absolute con job. Russia and China are stepping up and protecting their people and treasure from sorry to say.....Us and our leaders against this feely good, we are the world horseshit. They are to be commended. They are us of the past in this regard. We need leaders who put us first, protect us from outside threats of which this entire AGW deal is but unfortunately our own leaders are more interested in having a huge money pumping mechanism to take more money from us to use as they see fit..............Which will in most cases, have nothing to do with AGW and everything to do with a worldwide interconnected socialist machine. If they actually pull this off, Russia will be Russia, China will be China, what exactly will we be?

Posted by: Drider at December 17, 2009 04:43 AM (HaJD9)

55 The only interest is self-interest.  China and Russia are guarding theirs, the little countries are looking out for theirs, but our leaders are in pursuit of their own interests and not those of their people.  I hope OUR leaders lose their asses here, while we protect OURS against them.

57 .And yet, we do not have the leadership to go to bat for us.

It is not a matter of "going to bat for the people".  The Russians and the Chinese have had their experiment with communism and they have no desire to get back into the hard communism of the previous years.

Obama WANTS to push us into communism and every action he has done since he took office has been toward that goal.

The Russians and the Chinese have nothing to gain from the AGW scam and everything to lose.

Your point is well made.  I don't think I was feeding the AGW fire, but perhaps I should be more generous in this instance.  I've just been annoyed by past posts where commentors started citing China as a beacon of free trade and free markets, simply because they're on the right side of a trade issue now and then.  People are often too quick to see the good in places beyond our shores, simply because we're in decline here and it's so frustrating.  I don't want to go along with the idea that those countries are working out of altruism, concern for the greater good, or truth, justice, and the former American way.  They're not.  If they could cripple us militarily, bankrupt us, and subject us to their will they would do so in an instant, and have no qualms about it.
