Obama Offers $33 Billion for Climate Sins
— Dave in Texas

That is a boatload of indulgences.

However Gaia is not sufficiently appeased, so she's going to kick some ass in the northeast this weekend.

Before Twitter got hacked by the Iranian Cyber Army last night (handy email address in the logo) I saw ace mention that he and his brother have decided it'd be a good idea to start making up awards to give to Obama in order to distract him for a while. This idea has the virtue of simplicity and high likelihood of success, in that it appeals to his 8-lanes wide streak of narcissism. I suggest the next major award celebrate his unwavering commitment to the little guy getting screwed over by the credit card companies, the 2010 Reduced Lines of Credit and Lifetime Write-Off Achievement Award.

He's more than earned it.

So let's come up with some awards. What the hell, it's FiAF and I know you weren't planning on doing any work today.

Thanks to ace. The real one.

Gaia is a giant bitch.  First she got one of her sons to castrate her consort with a giant scythe and then she nurtured her nearly-devoured grandson, who in turn, got nearly all the Titans locked up in Tartarus after the Great War.

I can't wait to see her antics in GoW3.

And then there's all the stuff that the Earth has done to humans and animals...

The "Let Me Be Clear" and the "Make No Mistake" can't be awarded by the same committee, can they? At least one has to be [52%] People's Choice.

And another thing. Why don't other prominent explosives inventors have awards? There's no Wilbrand Peace Prize for TNT, no Vieille for smokeless powder, there's a Fermi Prize but no Oppenheimer. It's...it's...igNobel.

21 I have an idea, Why dont we offer the third world thousands of years of technology, science and knowledge that is essential to modern life. Why don't we allow them to license stuff like electrical generation and distribution, communications technology, radio, modern manufacturing technology, understanding of economics, modern law, millions of pages of literature and film, etc.

Lets give them that, for a small fee (say 1/2 a reasonable royalty of 20% net) and in exchange the west will pay them a trillion dollars for every 1 deg C that the world climate rises.

28 Hoover was not as bad as you think. His biggest flaw was (like Bush I listening to the left and raising taxes) going along with the left in trying to intervene to improve the economy. His second biggest flaw was advocating the free market upon defeat, and after realizing his mistake (like Bush II ) and thereby giving the left a meme that his free market ideas (which he did not actually abide when in office) were flawed and what got us into the depression.

This brings a new meaning to “New World Order” …

“This is not a climate-change negotiation,” said Janos Pasztor, director of the U.N. secretary-general’s climate-change support team. “It’s about something much more fundamental. It’s about economic strength.” Countries, he added, “just have to slug it out.”

Frankly, this is now sounding more like a negotiation on setting a World Industrial Plan with climate change as a pretext. More or less locking in industrial output and market share globally. Given the the two largest up and coming industrial countries, China and India, are trying to opt out, it seems pointless if at least the underlying pretext has no validity. It seems that the EU (and I guess the US) thought they could sucker them in, but these folks are no fools.

Time will tell, but if there is an agreement .. were China & Russia just playing the part of “bad cop” while the US & EU played “good cop” in an attempt to get the CRU e-mails out there .. making it look like the “global consensus” was falling apart, so the “developing” nations would grab a hold on any money that may be offered, believing that if AGW is eventually “debunked” that they could keep the money anyway and walk away from the agreement. But since this is really a World Industrial Plan, they really don’t get to walk away.

I keep trying to imagine what happens as 2nd and 3rd world countries realize that they have been dupped or mislead or just plain negotiated badly. We are talking trade wars, the likes of which have not occurred in over a century, and that means quite possibly real wars as well. Using a phony pretext, like AGW, will only make this possible outcome even more likely.

COPENHAGEN — A visibly angry Barack Obama threw down the gauntlet at China and other developing nations Friday, declaring that the time has come "not to talk but to act" on climate change.

Emerging from a multinational meeting boycotted by Chinese Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, Obama warned delegates that U.S. offers of funding for poor nations would remain on the table “if and only if” developing nations, including China, agreed to international monitoring of their greenhouse gas emissions.

So the infant is having a hissy fit because everyone won't just kiss his ass and blindly obey him like the US media.

After addressing the delegates, Obama met with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao for close to an hour to discuss emissions goals, verification mechanisms and climate financing.

I don't mean to get too serious on you, but conservatives respect tradition and reason, not precedent. Conservatives believe that the Constitution counts - the Constitution, itself - not precedent in rulings, which are nothing more than judges and justices trying to amend the Constitution according to their own whims. Precedent should never be judged by anything other than whether it was effective or correct. Precedents which are neither (such as Precedent Hussein) should end up on the ash-heap of history as quickly as possible and not be revisited again.

102 33 Billion/year?  That's some really low Danegeld there; that seems perfectly reaosnable.

And I'm sure this time if we just pay them they'll go away and leave us alone and not come back demanding more because they've decided Obama is a pushover... right?

It is always a temptation to an armed and agile nation
To call upon a neighbour and to say: --
"We invaded you last night--we are quite prepared to fight,
Unless you pay us cash to go away."

And that is called asking for Dane-geld,
And the people who ask it explain
That you've only to pay 'em the Dane-geld
And then you'll get rid of the Dane!

It is always a temptation for a rich and lazy nation,
To puff and look important and to say: --
"Though we know we should defeat you, we have not the time to meet you.
We will therefore pay you cash to go away."

And that is called paying the Dane-geld;
But we've proved it again and again,
That if once you have paid him the Dane-geld
You never get rid of the Dane.

It is wrong to put temptation in the path of any nation,
For fear they should succumb and go astray;
So when you are requested to pay up or be molested,
You will find it better policy to say: --

"We never pay any-one Dane-geld,
No matter how trifling the cost;
For the end of that game is oppression and shame,
And the nation that pays it is lost!"
- Kipling

Holy crap I'm literate today.  Why can I remember Kipling, I don't recall ever reading Kipling...

108 Well, he has been bucking for that Excellence In Maintaining Public Order medal, so why not?

Awarded this day to Barack Obama for courage shown during the dekulakization of the U.S.A. and for excellence in organising and coordinating bureaucracy in combating small business and for selfless acts during the prevention of independence/excellence/growth...

Something along those lines.  I'm pretty sure he'd dig it and he obviously shares the belief of so many other leftists that the U.S.S.R. is still a going concern, so no worries about him becoming suspicious about the provenance.

Hell, I'll bet we could get Putin to play along and invite Barry to Leningrad for some sort of really tacky awards ceremony.  He pretty much thinks Barry is a tool too.

111 This is a potentially genius-level idea in that ball-dipping AOS way! Stupid people are often powerfully distracted by small shiny objects (it is like an axiom or something!). The problem that I see is that the guy is never satisfied if he does not hear the word trillion (please do not teach the moron any new words!), and usually in the plural! It is a Pavlov thing. This is what is killing us. I swear to God, we could sell everything and still be broke. How is that so damn hard to understand? I understand broke since it is imminent for me! Why are so many so clueless? That government cheese and all can only get you so far. I have already said that I will just choose to be hiker trash over taking the government cheese. I imagine I will die soon enough, but at least I will be in a good place to die. I have never taken government cheese before, and I am a stubborn bastard! I was sort of famous on the "intertubes" very slightly for knowing how to kill vermin many moons ago. I do not want to live like one though. Archives and stray comments can be a bitch apparently. The short version is to put traps modified simply by making them more massive (gilding the lily is OK too!) in places where vermin have been. I have actually thrown shoes--it is not a recommended method though since they do not feel the Muslim shame apparently at such an indignity (imagine that!). It is an after-the-Valu-Rite method which sadly has vanishingly small hopes of success as it is tried, but imagine the gloating if it ever worked! I have baiting ideas too, since I can get into Mensa and I am a thinker! These days just saying the phrase: "have baiting ideas" pretty much dooms you to disdain and ridicule. Context, nuance, and not being a turd to quote a South Park character of abject looks, should remedy the situation with some thought, but who the hell cares though! What was I thinking? I started backpacking when I was very small. I am sort of famous in my family for almost killing my youngest brother (I am the oldest of eight so consider how many I saved by not killing them--I know it only makes sense if you are Obama). I thought my young brother would like doing what we did as kids. I apparently, according to an on-line search much after the fact, picked the worst snow year in recorded history (not all that long you "settled science" people!). We survived. As one of my brothers mockingly used to tell me in another context, "I have skills". Indeed I do, but they are of a less than laudable nature generally. Oh well. You simply have to not do anything too stupid; and God, or whomever, often lets fools survive in the wilderness. It is a beautiful thing really. I have made several mistakes outdoors, but nobody has paid the ultimate price. I am still more comfortable on the trail than anywhere else, but I am too old and lame to do the solo stuff that I did when I was young. Damn! Maybe some vermin will throw a well-aimed large shoe at me for revenge and it will be over! Letting a cipher such as Obama rule is another thing entirely. I will get back to you when I figure that one out! My guess is that that damn government cheese is tastier than I might imagine! Vermin will eat pretty much anything though. Voting as poorly as people did (cheating can't explain it all) is perhaps a tipping point. Maybe there will still be decent human beings on the trail (PCT in Oregon I am thinking). There used to be such folk certainly. If they are all Obamatrons and AlGorebots, I may have to design some larger traps baited with the proverbial government cheese! Even though most laws are pretty much flouted (constitution?, I got your constitution right here!), I assume that sort of behavior might still be frowned upon in some circles. Maybe it would just be a crime against misuse of government cheese though. That sounds about right these days! Anyone hear that Tiger is a man whore? A complete dunce. No really! Things are just not working generally. QED, FINI, or whatever. What did the guy in Aliens say exactly? Something like game over! I am thinking that sound bite with a bit of "The End of the World As We Know It" playing works about right (I really do love this song at high volume even when in a good mood!). I can be fun at times; this just is not one of them. Deal with it morons (but you know that I generally mean morons in a good way)! Mike
