— Ace Progress. We've gone from fact-checks of SNL parodies of Obama speeches to fact-checks of genuine Obama speeches.
In President Barack Obama's hands, the $700 billion financial rescue fund offers a bit of bookkeeping magic: an opportunity to pay down the deficit while also spending more—thereby adding to it.Under law, any paybacks to the bailout known as the Troubled Asset Relief Program must be used to reduce the deficit. But in an economic speech on Tuesday, the president sought to have it both ways. Increased repayments from banks to the Treasury will reduce the deficit all right, but it will give Congress the budgetary room to spend more—and the president encouraged just that.
"There are those who claim we have to choose between paying down our deficits on the one hand, and investing in job creation and economic growth on the other," Obama said. "But this is a false choice."To be sure, governments spend money during recessions to prime the economy, and they must be wary not to pull back too soon or to spend too long. But TARP returns are required by law to be used for deficit reduction. Yet if banks can help lower the deficit through one program, Congress can bump it up elsewhere.
What's more, even under Obama's rosier expectations the $700 billion TARP would still add $141 billion to the deficit.
It wasn't the president's only attempt at having his cake and eating it, too, in his speech.
Slublog, I think, posted that on Twitter; Mary Katharine Ham remarked, "Is he still doing that 'some say' thing?"
Oh yes. Oh yes oh yes oh yes.
AHFF Geoff sends this recap:
[Obama] takes aim at his opposition party, blasting Bush-era deficits created by "many of the same people who are now waxing political about fiscal responsibility while opposing our efforts to reduce deficits by getting health care costs under control." (11:48 a.m.)
Uh huh. Right, right. The, uh, health care bill will, er, save us money. Still putting the eggs in that basket, I see.
The last year's economic failure, Obama says in closing, has also been a political failure, brought about by succumbing to "the bitterness of partisanship, to the prosaic concerns of politics, to ever-quickening news cycles, and to endless campaigns focused on scoring points instead of meeting our common challenges." (11:49 a.m.)
Indeed, it has brought about succumbing to all that, as Obama should well know. He is Patient Zero.
So, to recap:
1. Obama has some budgetary magic beans. These can be spent multiple times, in multiple fashions. First, to pay down the deficit, then, to increase spending.
2. He also has some health-care magic beans. Once again, these beans can be used to increase spending on health care, and also magically reduce spending on health care.
3. "Some say" there is no such thing as magic beans and such people present to us the "false choice" of choosing between real beans and no beans at all.
4. There is some political partisanship afoot, and to reduce that political partisanship, Obama will blame his political opponents for the partisanship and not, say, his attempt to ram unpopular programs down the nation's throats, even at 55%+ levels of opposition.
5. Blame Bush.
That about cover it, President Einstein McDataSpock?
Thanks to Slublog and AHFF Geoff.

"There are those who claim we have to choose between paying down our deficits on the one hand, and investing in job creation and economic growth on the other," Obama said. "But this is a false choice."
I know it is a false choice but I say it anyway. We have something called the "money tree" stashed away in my backyard. It creates an infinite amount of money, jobs, and business opportunities. I keep it hidden so I can enrich myself, small business owners that refuse to hire people, tonsil stealing doctors, evil insurance companies (is there any other kind?), and special interests. Who is this mother f#cker to rain on my parade?

Hell even the Main sisters have given up on backing these commie policies. The press have lost all credibility with the public so they are starting to slide off the bandwagon now as well. Gibbsy has become a parody of Baghdad Bob. There isn't much left for him.

The broader market is going to have to do it - though, obviously, China is a huge part of the debt market. The problem is that many are confused by the effects of monetary inflation and misinterpret it as growth and value. I think it all comes down to when the Fed loses control of interest rates - which probably sits around 9 months, by my estimate. Also, when Israel hits Iran, there's going to be a huge monetary shock that goes around the world, fed in good part by the intentional outrageous outrage being shown by most of the Israel-hating countries and governments (which now includes Washington).
and, by then, we are looking at debt of about 17 - 18 trillion dollars. This, of course, will equal annual interest payments of around 250 billion per year.
Posted by: Mallamutt at December 08, 2009 03:25 PM (V9SYy)
And that's assuming interest rates remain at 'unprecedented' low rates, while we are going to have to start moving further out on the bond curve. It's ugly. Add in the anti-growth policies and it has all the makings of "The End".
The big difference, here, is that the US dollar has no possible replacements. Unlike other countries, we are going to be absolutely stuck with the situation, with no chance of escape - not monetarily, anyway ... But so many people try an analogize our situation to countries that have had replaceable currencies - whistling past the graveyard. When the dollar goes, it will be an "unprecedented" situation.

In the new-and-improved, totalitarian-for-your-own-good America, the future is always certain. It's the past that's constantly changing.
I like that. Very succinct way to describe where the Obamunists are coming from.

Monetarily, it's "quantitative", but "qualitative easing" is an absolutely perfect description of the election of The Precedent. Excellent.

Cavuto just asked Mitch McConnell if Reid's slave owner remark outraged him personally...and Mitch dodged the question.
Of course. He doesn't give a shit about anything but his own ass.
Posted by: a.k.a. at December 08, 2009 12:37 PM (z37MR)
but LO, the Steeler did say something, and something good at that:
“Sick and tired”
McCain’s not alone. GOP chair Michael Steele also denounced Reid’s comparison saying he was “sick and tired” of Democrats playing the race card when they don’t get their way.
“This has nothing to do with health care,” Steele said on Reid’s comments. “If you have a philosophical or political or business disagreement with this administration or Harry Reid on health care, it has nothing to do with the historic roots of slavery. So it was an ignorant comment. Harry needs to go to the well of the Senate, take it back and apologize for offending the sensibilities of the American people on something so important.”
Steele was appearing on CBS News this morning.

A completely idiotic choice too.

Not really, but I do actually know the difference; I thought and typed it wrong.
It's funnier the way I typed it, that's for sure.

But, McConnell also gave a good defense of the Bush budgets (except that he included the last 2 years with a Dem Congress) by exlaining that they were of a different scale and were defense-oriented, which is the main point, that very few like to emphasize. The left always tries to equate un-Constitutional federal social programs and spending with Consitutional (and common sense) defense expenditures - and then, when they cite the 'great' things that government spending does, they invariably point out defense projects. I was very happy that McConnell was explicit about the distinction (though he left the Constitution out of it - the Constitution is uncool, as we know).

It's part of the dysfunction of Washington.
Not that it doesn't mean Obama's NOT a conspicuous failure.

'Tis the Season for giving, and last month's terrorism at Ft. Hood reminded the public to donate to the blood bank.
Note now, I doubt that radical reactionary behavior will achieve anything desirable. And I know that Perry doesn't want to face brutality against the little old lady sell out from D.C. coming home to ride on our backs up close and personal. Sedated Hutchison IS a feigned conservative. And I agree with you that her political move to become TX Governor, as THE Republican candidate, is the Obama Straw sent to break TX back. If it were up to Republicans, she'd lose. But as Rush pointed out nationally, TX primaries are open. Combined with all the illegals whom the Democrats registered to vote, Perry will have to deal with the very problem that the TX Legislature refused to correct last session and the session before. Without VOTER ID proving citizenship, we continue down the ACORN slope, each cycle further.

You want to know what's really screwing up this economy?
Try getting a loan for investing in real estate. Even if you are a AAA risk.
You can't get one.
If you're poor and promise not to pay it back, you can get money.

What's more, even under Obama's rosier expectations the $700 billion TARP would still add $141 billion to the deficit.
WTF?
TARP was $700 billion, but they say they only spent $500 billion and the banks paid back, I guess, $359 billion, leaving a $141 billion dollar deficit.Since where in debt only $141 billion instead of $341 billion we can use that "savings" to do other stuff.
Isn't this the same kind of thinking that leads individuals to make bad personal economic decisions, and that resulted in the foreclosure crisis.
