What English Sounds Like to Foreigners
Back in 1972 Italian singer Adriano Celentano wrote a gibberish song that was supposed to sound like English. It was a hit and a classic example of pre-Disco.
And will taste awesome, or at least no worse than it did before.

You Morons will appreciate this tradition: At around 11 pm, when we're all sick of each other, we head out to the near by local biker bar, where we drink even more, and play pool, darts and pinball. It's fun to see my 70 something folks living it up in a biker bar on Christmas Eve.

unless a date pops up for you.
The Magic 8 Ball says the outlook isn't good for that to happen. I tried, but my imaginary boyfriend turned me down.
It's OK, after I go to my friend's annual holiday brunch I'm going to come home, put on my most comfy pajamas, curl up on the sofa, watch Christmas movies, and drink myself silly.

69, this isn't a quick one. I started having a scratchy throat on Sunday. Had a z-pack lying around so I jumped on that.
Didn't seem to work. I was OK to fish Wed. and then that night I felt liked I'd been repeatedly kicked about the head and shoulders and that my nose was about to slide off my face.

WTR, I missed my window for Zicam this time. If I get on it early enough it does work. That and the Sleep Number beds are two products I believe everything they say about them from personal experience.
I took baby girl shopping for mama last Friday night and she coughed right in my face as I was putting her in the truck. I figure that was what did it.

Maybe making candy after having a couple of drinks isn't the best plan in the universe...

None of the kids came in for Christmas eve so we got out in the 4 wheel and toured the incoming blizzard. We found a car that had slid off in a ravine with a young man sitting ON the wreckage with a wth/wtf look on his face. He wasnt injured so we loaded him and his laundry up and took him the rest of the way to his moms house safely.
I suppose it was a fine Christmas eve all in all

I donÂ’t understand why AMC is running 24 hours of White Christmas. There are other Christmas movies. I mean it is a nice enough movie, but come on 24 hours worth?
IÂ’m actually a little disappointed in the Christmas television choices this year. I see that a lot of stations have chosen to ignore it altogether and those that are showing Christmas related shows seem to be showing the same ones over and over again.

They have managed to cast a shadow of doubt upon all research and forecasts for decades IMO. The motivations of those doing the science now have to be questioned in all cases because of what they've done.

IÂ’m back again after the latest round of fake candy making.
Sassypants has already gone to bed, but actually I donÂ’t have any more presents to open (except the ones from Santa, which I already know) since I was with my family and we did Christmas together on Monday.
So, other than the joy of watching my son open his Santa gifts followed by the crushing sorrow of watching him leave for 10 days, tomorrow is just another day.

>>265 can't wait for this weekend to get over with..
While personally I enjoy the holiday season, I recognize that some people have a harder time with it. For one thing, it is so cold outside. And for those who are without family during the holidays, or who dislike their family, it can be a lonely, stressful, depressing burden. There is no more painful reminder to the unhappy of their personal misery than the constant and public display of everyone else's happiness. But it is up to all of us to find our way through! Whether you love or hate the holiday season, your personal fulfillment still comes from within. (Barf!) And so, if you taken no pleasure in the festive music and the colorful decorations and the promise of gifts and the company of loved ones, find something that DOES give you pleasure.

Woo Hoo! Unprecedented.
DALLAS — In much of the rolling plains of West Texas, a blizzard has never been recorded.
There has been one now.
The region west and northwest of the Dallas-Fort Worth area saw blizzard-like conditions throughout the day Thursday as up to 8 inches of snow fell in the region, according to the National Weather Service. Winds gusting at up to 65 mph drifted the snow as deep as 5 feet in some areas

One hellish summer in Houston will probably make you yearn for Dallas. Look into Austin or its outlying area. It is beautiful country around there, especially the Hill Country. San Antonio is OK, if you live in the northwest or up the road in Boerne (Hill Country again). The rest of the town is mostly shit.

I think California is friendly enough, in that it kind of isn't, but still friendlier than some.
The town were I live has some kind of misted anesthetic that makes people that don't even know each other smile and wave. It took me a while to get used to it, but now I really like it, and I notice its absence when I go across the bridge and into San Diego.

When Mrs. Five and I got married a few years back, the husband of her maid of honor had to make a late flight out from Jersey the day before the wedding. Poor guy had gone clubbing in the City the night before, hopped on a plane to Cedar Rapids (why he flew ther I don't know) and then got in a rental car for the five-hour drive through cornfields to the tiny little town that Mrs. Five's parents live in. And then realizes that his is definitely the only black face in a town of maybe 100 people. You wanna talk about culture shock...

Oklahoma on average has the friendliest turnpike workers you'll find anywhere. Makes it a little easier to hand over ridiculous amounts of money for the privilege of driving on their road.

I have, but not in a bad way. It's kind of a funny town/island. I didn't know there were places left in this state, that were near major population centers, where door locks were still optional, the neighbors helpful but not wanting to get into your business, and the police were really into preventing or solving crime.

Yeah, not pretty. Maytag has been closed for several years. A company that makes wind generators moved into one of the factories, but it doesn't even come close to employing as many people. Sadly, the union idiots in Newton did it to themselves. They never learn, it seems.

They weren't my bullies, but my girlfriend got home from work (she used to fly as an emergency nurse in the Hermann Hospital lifeflight hospital) and found them outside our door, half-keeled over. I had to find the owners the next morning and tell them.
She and a policeman got them under a hose, but the older one later went into cardiac arrest at the emergency vet's and died. I took care of the younger one until we located the owners.

'Twas the night before Christmas and Santa's a wreck...
How to live in a world that's politically correct?
His workers no longer would answer to "Elves",
"Vertically Challenged" they were calling themselves.
And labor conditions at the north pole
Were alleged by the union to stifle the soul.
Four reindeer had vanished, without much propriety,
Released to the wilds by the Humane Society.
And equal employment had made it quite clear
That Santa had better not use just reindeer.
So Dancer and Donner, Comet and Cupid,
Were replaced with 4 pigs, and you know that looked stupid!?
The runners had been removed from his sleigh;
The ruts were termed dangerous by the E.P.A.
And people had started to call for the cops
When they heard sled noises on their roof-tops.
Second-hand smoke from his pipe had his workers quite frightened.
His fur trimmed red suit was called "Unenlightened."
And to show you the strangeness of life's ebbs and flows:
Rudolf was suing over unauthorized use of his nose
And had gone on Geraldo, in front of the nation,
Demanding millions in over-due compensation.
So, half of the reindeer were gone; and his wife,
Who suddenly said she'd enough of this life,
Joined a self-help group, packed, and left in a whiz,
Demanding from now on her title was Ms.
And as for the gifts, why, he'd ne'er had a notion
That making a choice could cause so much commotion.
Nothing of leather, nothing of fur,
Which meant nothing for him. And nothing for her.
Nothing that might be construed to pollute.
Nothing to aim. Nothing to shoot.
Nothing that clamored or made lots of noise.
Nothing for just girls. Or just for the boys.
Nothing that claimed to be gender specific.
Nothing that's warlike or non-pacific.
No candy or sweets...they were bad for the tooth.
Nothing that seemed to embellish a truth.
And fairy tales, while not yet forbidden,
Were like Ken and Barbie, better off hidden.
For they raised the hackles of those psychological
Who claimed the only good gift was one ecological.
No baseball, no football...someone could get hurt;
Besides, playing sports exposed kids to dirt.
Dolls were said to be sexist, and should be passe;
And Nintendo would rot your entire brain away.
So Santa just stood there, disheveled, perplexed;
He just could not figure out what to do next.
He tried to be merry, tried to be gay*,
But you've got to be careful with that word today.
*Will ace banhammer me?
His sack was quite empty, limp to the ground;
Nothing fully acceptable was to be found.
Something special was needed, a gift that he might
Give to all without angering the left or the right.
A gift that would satisfy, with no indecision,
Each group of people, every religion;
Every ethnicity, every hue,
Everyone, everywhere...even you.
So here is that gift, it's price beyond worth...
"May you and your loved ones enjoy peace on earth."
SiM to my lovely friends.. I love you.

I've heard that about her; I have a friend who graduated from Bowdoin and met the Bushes one Sunday after going to church in Kennebunkport. He said that they are both very gracious and unpretentious people. I remember reading one year that Barbara Bush was elected Biker Babe of the Year and was just delighted by the honor. I've been to KBPT only once but liked it a lot. Maine has a number of pleasantly human-sized small towns (thinking of Rodent here).

I think there will some gains made in the Senate, and a bit more in the House, but the Pubbies really screwed the pooch pretty over the past 9 years.
I'd say three-four pickups in the Senate and around 20+ in the House. Not nearly enough to control. But Obama will face a disaster in 2012, if the Pubbies don't do something stupid.

But if you want to see how stupid the Pubbies are, look at North Dakota - a red state that has two Dim Senators and a Dim Rep,
Governor Hoeven is a RINO deluxe, but he could win a Senate seat in 2010 in a lay-down, but he doesn't seem to want to run. The Dim Rep is a lib scumbag, but his job is secure in a Republican state with less than 600,000 people.

The Cook Political Report now has 174 seats in the Solid Democratic column; 44 others rated as Likely Democrat, meaning not yet but potentially competitive; and 23 more seats in the Lean Democratic column, meaning competitive.
There are 19 seats rated as Toss Up, in which neither party can claim a clear advantage. There are eight seats in the Lean Republican column, 16 in the Likely Republican group and 151 rated as Solidly Republican.
Put in a more understandable format, the current number of Solid and Likely Democratic seats is 218, coincidentally the barest possible majority.

Yeah, my friend from Bowdoin was a great admirer of JLC. Friend went to theological seminary after Bowdoin and his first parish after graduation was in Roswell, Georgia. He went to a Civil War reenactment with the church youth group his first summer at that church and said that when the boys in blue came matching down the road to the battlefield he cheered because he was getting homesick for Maine at that point. And the kids looked at him like he had three heads or something.
Apropos of Chamberlain at Gettysburg-- I grew up about a two hours' drive from the town and visited the battlefield several times. It is quite an experience to stand where the 20th Maine was posted on Little Round Top.
I can't help wondering what Chamberlain would think of Snowe and Collins.

Not original, and well over a decade and a half old, but a good idea of how the different UC schools viewed each other.
I notice there isn't one for UCOP (Office of the President).
How many UC San Diego students does it take to change a lightbulb?
Two: one to mix the margaritas and one to call the electrician.
*******************
How many UC Santa Cruz students does it take to change a lightbulb?
Eleven: one to change the lightbulb and ten to share the experience.
*******************
How many UC Davis students does it take to change a lightbulb?
None. Davis doesnÂ’t have electricity.
*******************
How many UC San Francisco students does it take to change a lightbulb?
Two: one to change the lightbulb and one to crack under the pressure.
*******************
How many UC Santa Barbara students does it take to change a lightbulb?
Only one, but he gets six credits for it.
*******************
How many UC Berkeley students does it take to change a lightbulb?
Seventy-six: one to change the lightbulb, fifty to protest the lightbulbÂ’s right not to change, and twenty-five to hold a counter protest.
*******************
How many UC Riverside students does it take to change a lightbulb?
None: Riverside looks better in the dark.
*******************
How many UC Irvine students does it take to change a lightbulb?
One to hire the undocumented worker mowing the lawn to do it for them.
*******************
How many UCLA students does it take to change a lightbulb?
One: She holds the lightbulb and the world revolves around her.

It left me harrumphing "Bah, humbug!" and strongly wanting another shot of tequila. But she's family, so I just grin and bear it - after the shot of tequila, that is.
But Merry Christmas to all my fellow Christian morons. And felicitations of the season to all of you.

kdabear, unions, as wtr noted, are the bane of California. We may have a chance of whacking at them since Meg Whitman is absolutely spoiling for a major, bloody battle with them, and Californians (I think) are getting wise to how damaging they are.
I swear, if we can just whack those guys we might be able to train up Cali voters enough to send that Repub to the Senate when the horrid DiFi is up for re-election.

As for "A Christmas Story", I don't like the movie, butthe original stories (many of which were published in "Playboy") are hilarious. Well worth reading.

514 speaking of UCLA lefties, have you heard of Doug Kellner?
I don't think so but the name sounds vaguely familiar. Who is he?
Old friend of mine from UT/Austin. Big leftie. He taught in the philosophy department at UT (Marcuse, Marxist theory), and is now one of the heads of UCLA's education school. Rabid as hell and very public.
I'm his philosophical opposite and we had some real battles back then.

"For a Senator, you'd be dealing with the FBI."
Or the fearsome Capitol Police.
Actually, most of the CP guys were pretty good folks.

John and Ken asked Meg how she would avoid an Arnie-style collapse, and that's where she said loud and clear, "Leadership!" No wimping out, no backing down, etc.
Anyway, we shall see. They're adding toll roads all over San Diego and OC, which is pathetic. Toll roads.

Interesting that one day after he gives President Dumbass an "A" (!?!), Arnie goes on his knees to the White House for a bailout.
California fiscally collapsing a la NYC in the 70s would be the best thing for it.

Hey, man. You can't, like, expect people to be slaves to the man. They gotta be free, man. Free to do their thing.
And yeah, W was the best president Mexico ever had.

Ahnuld made a huge mistake putting out propositions that were necessary in 2005, an off year for turnout. The unions dug up the dead to vote them down while everyone else was barely aware there were elections, and the vote was in May rather than November.
Ahnuld threw in the towel after that, and not only decided to join them if he couldn't beat them, but he led the spending binge.

If this won't put you back to sleep..nothing will.
--Lost X Files Christmas episode--
Mulder: We're too late. It's already been here.
Scully: Mulder, I hope you know what you are doing.
Mulder: Look, Scully, just like the other homes: Douglas fir, truncated, mounted, transformed into some sort of shrine; halls decked with boughs of holly; stockings hung by the chimney, with care.
Scully: You really think someone's been here?
Mulder: Someone or some thing.
Scully: Mulder, over here--it's fruitcake.
Mulder: Don't touch it! Those things can be lethal.
Scully: It's O.K. There's a note attached: "Gonna find out who's naughty and nice."
Mulder: It's judging them, Scully. It's making a list.
Scully: Who? What are you talking about?
Mulder: Ancient mythology tells of an obese humanoid entity who could travel at great speed in a craft powered by antlered servants. Once each year, near the winter solstice, this creature is said to descend from the heavens to reward its followers and punish its disbelievers with jagged chunks of anthracite.
Scully: But that's legend, Mulder--a story told by parents to frighten children. Surely, you don't believe it?
Mulder: Something was here tonight, Scully. Check out the bite marks on this gingerbread man. Whatever tore through this plate of cookies was massive -- and in a hurry.
Scully: It left crumbs everywhere. And look, Mulder, this milk glass has been completely drained.
Mulder: It gorged itself, Scully. It fed without remorse.
Scully: But why would they leave it milk and cookies?
Mulder: Appeasement. Tonight is the Eve, and nothing can stop its wilding.
Scully: But if this thing does exist, how did it get in? The doors and windows were locked. There's no sign of forced entry.
Mulder: Unless I miss my guess, it came through the fireplace.
Scully: Wait a minute, Mulder. If you are saying some huge creature landed on the roof and came down the chimney, you're crazy. The flue is barely six inches wide. Nothing could get through there.
Mulder: But what if it could alter its shape, move in all directions.
Scully: You mean, like a bowl full of jelly?
Mulder: Exactly. Scully, I've never told anyone this, but when I was a child my home was visited. I saw the creature. It had long white strips of fur surrounding its ruddy, misshapen head. Its bloated torso was red and white. I'll never forget the horror. I turned away, and when I looked back it had somehow taken on the facial features of my father.
Scully: Impossible.
Mulder: I know what I saw. And that night it read my mind. It brought me a Mr. Potato Head, Scully. IT KNEW I WANTED A MR. POTATO HEAD. Scully: I'm sorry, Mulder, but you're asking me to disregard the laws of physics. You want me to believe in some supernatural being who soars across the skies and brings gifts to good little girls and boys. Listen to what you are saying. Do you understand the repercussions? If this gets out, they'll close the X-files.
Mulder: Scully, listen to me: It knows when you are sleeping. It knows when you're awake.
Scully: But we have no proof.
Mulder: Last year, on this exact date, S.E.T.I. radio telescopes detected bogeys in the airspace over twenty-seven states. The White House ordered a Condition Red.
Scully: But that was a meteor shower.
Mulder: Officially. Two days ago, eight prized Scandinavian reindeer vanished from the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. Nobody - not even the zookeeper - was told about it. The government doesn't want people to know about Project Kringle. They fear that if this thing is proved to exist, then the public would stop spending half its annual income in a holiday shopping frenzy. Retail markets will collapse. Scully, they cannot let the world believe this creature lives. There's too much at stake. They'll do whatever it takes to insure another silent night.
Scully: Mulder, I --
Scully: On the roof. It sounds like . . . a clatter.
Mulder: The truth is up there. Let's see what's the matter...
