Overnight Open Thread - Christmas Eve (Mætenloch)
— Open Blog

Merry Christmas all. Hey I wasn't supposed to be here at all but alas my flights were canceled due to snow in Dallas. So I guess it'll be Xmas eve reindeer games here at ONT central.

What English Sounds Like to Foreigners

6 Merry Christmas Eve m&m's. We made it to SC and now I've caught the crud baby girl has. Felt so bad this morning I scrubbed fishing.

12 Hey, just popping in real quick to wish you guys and gals a Merry Christmas! Off to church soon for Midnight Mass, but I hope everyone of you is with someone whom you love and care about tonight and tomorrow. If you're not so fortunate, get your butt to church - because (corny as it sounds) God Loves You.

13 So, what's the word on who will be on the ONT for much of tonight and tomorrow night?

Posted by: Sassypants at December 24, 2009 05:56 PM (I/mtr)

14

Informal poll for the ONT'ers: "A Christmas Story". Love it or hate it?

I find there are very few neutral opinions on this movie.

Posted by: Scott J. at December 24, 2009 05:56 PM (Sm0sy)

15 Yeah the cat's nose doesn't disappear for me neither.

Posted by: chemjeff at December 24, 2009 05:57 PM (Gk/wA)

16 Bob Hope was a Republican, wasn't he? Great man. I'm still amazed they kept the airport named after him. I thought they'd scrub him for being a right winger.

Posted by: wherestherum at December 24, 2009 05:57 PM (gofDd)

17 Scott J., I think it is a fine movie but not the awesomely awesomest movie that its fanboys claim it to be.

Posted by: chemjeff at December 24, 2009 05:58 PM (Gk/wA)

18 I'll be on tonight.  Tommorow night, who knows?

21 Hi WTR

Posted by: chemjeff at December 24, 2009 05:59 PM (Gk/wA)

22 I'll be here tonight, Sassy. As I said on the other thread, I skipped out on Christmas Eve dinner at a pho restaurant. My (former) childhood best friend was supposed to attend but she flaked, as I knew she would. She's allegedly coming tomorrow but I'll bet you my Christmas presents she won't show.

Posted by: Scott J. at December 24, 2009 06:00 PM (Sm0sy)

24 Merry Christmas, all!

You Morons will appreciate this tradition:  At around 11 pm, when we're all sick of each other, we head out to the near by local biker bar, where we drink even more, and play pool, darts and pinball.  It's fun to see my 70 something folks living it up in a biker bar on Christmas Eve.

Sassypants, I think you might've missed my comment last night, but I'll be around. The question is will Maet post an ONT tomorrow evening for us to play in?

Christmas Story--I like it but don't think it is worth 24 hours of showing.

Posted by: ParanoidGirlInSeattle at December 24, 2009 06:00 PM (RZ8pf)

27 I really liked "A Christmas Story". I remember seeing it in theatres back in high school. So, it's nostalgia for me.

35 Yeah, I finally re-read the ONT comments from last night this morning at 10:00 AM (I slept late), so I saw what you wrote, PGIS. Thanks for keeping me company -- unless a date pops up for you. I fell asleep early last night because I had the migraine of migraines and no medicine would put my head out of its misery.

Posted by: Sassypants at December 24, 2009 06:02 PM (I/mtr)

36 Scott J., classic!  I saw that movie just a few months ago, right before Halloween.

Posted by: GregInSeattle at December 24, 2009 06:02 PM (B5cM9)

37 Rum - is this the same friend who used to be your best friend but you guys had some sort of falling out due to politics? What is this girl's problem? Why cant she just be an adult?

Posted by: Sassypants at December 24, 2009 06:03 PM (I/mtr)

38 Hmm. are there shoes in there? If so I may take that bet... LOL, no shoes. But I did gift myself with a LeSportsac weekend bag from Zappos. It arrived yesterday. Free overnight shipping and no sales tax! (So it cost $4 more than the LeSportsac website but shipping was free and no sales tax!)

Posted by: wherestherum at December 24, 2009 06:04 PM (gofDd)

39 chemjeff, those breads sounds tasty, especially the raspberry one. Recipe? Sassy, yep, same girl. I don't know if it was over politics or what. The last time I saw her was when I crashed at her house because I was evacuated from mine due to the fires. We didn't even really talk much and I was terrified for my house burning down. She was more concerned about her phone interview the next day with some law firm.

Posted by: wherestherum at December 24, 2009 06:06 PM (gofDd)

40 32  I laughed my ass off when I saw that, as I remembered its previous appearance.

41 Well, PGiS, we think pretty much like alcoholics (even those of us that aren't)!

42

unless a date pops up for you.

The Magic 8 Ball says the outlook isn't good for that to happen. I tried, but my imaginary boyfriend turned me down.

It's OK, after I go to my friend's annual holiday brunch I'm going to come home, put on my most comfy pajamas, curl up on the sofa, watch Christmas movies, and drink myself silly.

Posted by: ParanoidGirlInSeattle at December 24, 2009 06:06 PM (RZ8pf)

43 So, it's your parents who are friendly with her parents? Why do they keep the friendship going when their daughter is so blatantly rude to you???

Not to worry the ONT always goes on.

And yes A Christmas Story is still awesome. But maybe they should cut it back to only 12 hours a day.

Posted by: Mætenloch at December 24, 2009 06:07 PM (mQi3C)

45 And she can't be an adult because she's a liberal Democrat. You should have heard what she and her law school buddy were saying when it came to Sarah Palin.

GregInSeattle, the part of my family that drinks discovered that apple martinis make everything better. After a round of them (fixed with my new cocktail shaker which I left in Denver, dammit) everyone bonded over the Wii Fit game.

51 Merry Christmas, nightshifters.

52 PGiS awwww that's so sad!

Posted by: chemjeff at December 24, 2009 06:09 PM (Gk/wA)

53 PGiS, if we lived in the same state you'd be more than welcome to come over for dinner tomorrow night. The more the merrier and we'll have dogs galore! Sassy, my parents have been friends with their parents for 20 years. We don't see them that often, just Christmas and Chinese New Year on occasion. It's tradition that her family or mine host Christmas Eve dinner. We used to alternate houses. Last year was our house and the first year she didn't come over. She was allegedly studying to take the bar again in Feb. It was too important to take a break for Xmas, I guess.

Posted by: wherestherum at December 24, 2009 06:10 PM (gofDd)

54 48, get up, watch the kids open their presents from Santa then hang around the in-laws' house watching it rain while I pray I get well enough to fish the tournament on Saturday.

Posted by: Scott J. at December 24, 2009 06:11 PM (Sm0sy)

55 Which part chemjeff, the imaginary boyfriend that turned me down or the lost cocktail shaker?

Posted by: ParanoidGirlInSeattle at December 24, 2009 06:11 PM (RZ8pf)

56 well, I think your parents should say something to her parents - something along the lines of "your daughter is being bitchy to our daughter. Talk to her." etc... Of course, what do I know? I'm drinking.

Posted by: Sassypants at December 24, 2009 06:11 PM (I/mtr)

57 Ok, all, enjoy.  I'm off to join the rest of the family in heavy drinking.  We get a new one (drinker) this year, a nephew just turned 21 and is psyched for the Biker Bar.

62 Scott J., hope you get well!

Posted by: chemjeff at December 24, 2009 06:13 PM (Gk/wA)

63 I will most likely be up by 7am to open the Santa gifts with my boy, then he heads off to his dad's at 10am and I go to my friend's brunch and eat really good pastries and then my aforementioned pjs, movies, and booze.

Posted by: ParanoidGirlInSeattle at December 24, 2009 06:13 PM (RZ8pf)

64 Sassy, last time her parents came over (a few weeks ago for a post-turkey dinner) I asked about her. Her mom said she keeps meaning to call and then I moved to NY. I told her mom I called her a bunch of times, including when I was in NY, and she never called back. Her mom didn't have an answer for that. All she said was she'd tell her to call. I didn't hold my breath and I was right.

Posted by: wherestherum at December 24, 2009 06:14 PM (gofDd)

Well chemjeff I suspect if I'd made the effort I could've had plans for Christmas dinner, but to be honest I'm looking forward to a little me time.

Posted by: ParanoidGirlInSeattle at December 24, 2009 06:15 PM (RZ8pf)

68 Christmas plans: open presents, eat breakfast and count gift card money. Then my aunt, her bf, my cousin and his wife, and said former best friend's family are all coming over for dinner. Cousin and his wife will be bringing their adorable new pug. I might also swing by another friend's house to exchange gifts.

69 Scott, I hope it's a quick one.  I had it for 2 days and then it was gone.  Still felt really tired for a few days, but not stay-home-from-fishing kind of tired.

Posted by: Hatchet Five at December 24, 2009 06:18 PM (qB3D9)

75 Anyone going shopping the day after Christmas? It seems like a lot of stores are already sold out on their Christmas stuff so I'm not sure it will be worth it this year.

Posted by: ParanoidGirlInSeattle at December 24, 2009 06:18 PM (RZ8pf)

76 75 - I was going to try to hit some of the stores the day after Christmas. But I wasn't planning on going crazy about it.

Posted by: Sassypants at December 24, 2009 06:19 PM (I/mtr)

77

69, this isn't a quick one. I started having a scratchy throat on Sunday. Had a z-pack lying around so I jumped on that.

Didn't seem to work. I was OK to fish Wed. and then that night I felt liked I'd been repeatedly kicked about the head and shoulders and that my nose was about to slide off my face.

Posted by: Scott J. at December 24, 2009 06:20 PM (Sm0sy)

78 PGiS, they really limited their inventories this year, didn't they?  I went back for a couple of things -- nope, gone!

Posted by: Peaches at December 24, 2009 06:20 PM (9Wv2j)

79 Hatchet, yeah, I came to grips with it awhile ago. I still got her a Christmas gift since we did exchange birthday presents via mail. So if I see her, great, if not, it's not my loss. One less liberal in my life. I almost wanted to wear something that said Sarah Palin on it to dinner just to taunt her. Heh.

Posted by: wherestherum at December 24, 2009 06:21 PM (gofDd)

80

PGIS, I managed to score one of the three on her list. And for more than she set as a spending limit. I tossed that out the window when I got my bonus though.

But since I ran out of time for shipping I racked up for her at Hobby Lobby. She was pleased.

Posted by: Scott J. at December 24, 2009 06:22 PM (Sm0sy)

81 Yeah Peaches, lots of stuff gone really quick this year in the stores, lots sold out on websites. Anyone who waited until the last minute won't get what they wanted I imagine.

Posted by: ParanoidGirlInSeattle at December 24, 2009 06:22 PM (RZ8pf)

82 Sorry to hear you're ill, Scott J. Isn't it fun when kids pass on their germs? I hope you feel better soon. Maybe try Limbaugh's Zicam? I've heard others swear by it. No post Christmas shopping for me. I'm spent for the month money-wise. Or at least, I'm trying to stop myself from spending anymore. Need to have a real job again.

Posted by: wherestherum at December 24, 2009 06:23 PM (gofDd)

87

WTR, I missed my window for Zicam this time. If I get on it early enough it does work. That and the Sleep Number beds are two products I believe everything they say about them from personal experience.

I took baby girl shopping for mama last Friday night and she coughed right in my face as I was putting her in the truck. I figure that was what did it.

Posted by: Scott J. at December 24, 2009 06:26 PM (Sm0sy)

88 86 Darn I missed ya by a year.  Mrs. Five and I were up there in July 2007.  Flew into PANC, rented a car, and drove around the state for two weeks.  Or at least that portion of it reachable by highway.

Guess I could pick on my poor wife. Had a 12 gauge shotshell loader on my list and she accidentally bought 20 gauge.

She feels bad but it's really not that big of a deal. When I go back to exchange it I can buy the shot, wads, powder and primers that I need to use it.

99 Hatchet, I definitely want to go back to AK, just not on a cruise. I had a lovely time in the state. In her book she talked about Skagway and it was easy for me to picture what she was talking about because it was one of the stops on the cruise. Scott J., my ex has a Sleep Number bed. That bed is probably the nicest bed I've ever slept in. But I still like my own bed better. Maybe because it's mine, lol.

107 Rum, we bought camping gear and camped out a bunch while we were there, and mixed in staying at some neat bed&breakfast places.  One was a set of converted Alaska Railway sleeper cars on a ridge overlooking Fairbanks.  Beautiful.  Another was a converted dairy in Wasilla, with a nice view of Knik Arm and the mountains, and each room decorated in a different theme.  We were in the Fishing Room.  The most freaked out Mrs. Five got (other than from my speedy driving) was when a black bear went ambling past the campground one morning while I was frying up breakfast; she made a frantic rush back to the tent for her camera and my larger handgun, and not necessarily in that order.

109 Stockings are stuffed, food for tomorrow is prepped, kids are in bed with stern warnings that Santa Claus will come and eat their fucking kidneys if they wake us up before 7:30, and now Mama and I will just settle our brains for a long winter's nap with a couple of shots of wassail.

110 Sassy, we used to open one present on Christmas Eve and then Santa comes by and drops more on us overnight. I'll have to remember to leave some cookies out for him. I told my dad one year I didn't believe in Santa and he said that must mean I don't want any presents. So for all intents and purposes, I believe in Santa. My parents even sign the gift tags "Santa." The gifts I give my sister I sign "Sandy Claws."

112 I once stopped by a bar on Christmas Day -- out taking a walk after the huge midday meal and needed to take a leak.  Not much jolly going on there.  Three or four solitary drinkers on stools staring straight ahead at nothing.  Maybe other places are different.

WTR, we bought the sleep number bed when my wife was pregnant with our first child and having major back and hip issues. It was a Godsend.

118 I feel badly for Mætenloch getting stuck here.  My sympathies go out to anyone traveling this week.  We're happily ensconced in Casa Y-not watching the Sheraton Bowl.  SMU is crushing Nevada.

Stocking stuffing was tough this year.  Usually we use Queen-sized thigh high stockings, but I think last year I must've bought normal-sized stockings 'cause we both had trouble getting them stuffed.  After watching those vids, I'm kind of hoping that there's a hedgehog under the tree!

Posted by: Y-not at December 24, 2009 07:00 PM (sey23)

119 Scott J., the bed helped with her snoring? Hmmm. Maybe I should suggest it to my parents. When I was young, my dad snored so loud sharing a hotel room sucked. It's gotten better now, but I can still hear him when my bedroom door is closed. He also has back problems. If I ever get a job that pays me good money again, maybe I'll help them buy one.

Posted by: wherestherum at December 24, 2009 07:48 PM (gofDd)

199 I should clarify, Rum. I don't like mediocre Chinese food. I have had really good Chinese food from upscale Chinese restaurants and really enjoyed it. For example, my favourite Chinese dish is good Peking duck with that hoisin sauce (I think that's what they give you) and then the pancakes you can roll them up in. There used to be an excellent Chinese restaurant in Chicago (no longer there, unfortunately) called Memories of China, and that's what I would get every time we ate there. But the typical mediocre stuff is not for me. And I don't like gefilte fish either. Especially the pickled kind. Anything pickled is repulsive. I don't much care for Jewish food. Latkes and kugel are the main exceptions. Because I love fried food.

209 205 I haven't tried either place. Mr. Sassypants loves Main Moon. He loves the hot and sour soup there. But they make it with pork and I won't eat that. Yokohama is in the Lore's Plaza. See - this is why I love Ace's site. Where else can I go and find some other poster who lives in the same tiny town as I do in CT? What are the odds?

213 I don't like mediocre Chinese food. I have days were I crave the crappiness that is Panda Express, or a restaurant similar to it. But after going to Vancouver, I don't really like the Chinese food down here except the local hole in the wall. The owners are family friends, too, and they always give us a little extra of everything.

Posted by: wherestherum at December 24, 2009 07:59 PM (gofDd)

214 213  And to think I like Panda.  I like King Buffet better.  My little town back in Iowa has a little family-owned Chinese place that always has the food ready in "fif-teen minute" when we call ahead.  Good stuff.

Posted by: Sassypants at December 24, 2009 08:02 PM (NFIi5)

216 Sassy, former BF is still allegedly coming tomorrow. Her parents said she got held up in Orange County and didn't make it back in time for dinner. I am still skeptical. She's also moving back to SF, which is fine because it's perfect for her liberal sensibilities. I told my dad if she really wanted to talk to me she could have called me at some point the entire year and never did.

Speaking of Chinese food my wife prefers to eat at a buffet while I prefer the order from a menu places.

So, we tend not to have it much.

219 212, so how was the meal once he finally finished peeling the spuds?

Posted by: Hatchet Five at December 24, 2009 08:03 PM (qB3D9)

220 214 My parents love Chinese buffets! I hate them, lol. I just don't trust them and the quality is meh. I don't really like the Chinese food my mom cooks except mushu pork and some sort of soup she makes for Chinese New Year. She never makes dumplings. My dad makes better fried rice.

Posted by: wherestherum at December 24, 2009 08:04 PM (gofDd)

231 Sassy, my cousin and his wife are coming tomorrow and I love when they're around. And they're bringing their puppy so it should be fine. I doubt FBF will show so I'm not worried. And if she does, I'm betting she won't stay for longer than dinner. Scott J., the hole in the walls we go to here have B ratings. I don't trust Chinese restaurants with A ratings. I know it should be the opposite, but the real Chinese places aren't concerned with temps the way non-Asian restaurants are. Which is probably bad for non-Asians but fine for other Chinese people.

While personally I enjoy the holiday season, I recognize that some people have a harder time with it. For one thing, it is so cold outside. And for those who are without family during the holidays, or who dislike their family, it can be a lonely, stressful, depressing burden. There is no more painful reminder to the unhappy of their personal misery than the constant and public display of everyone else's happiness. But it is up to all of us to find our way through! Whether you love or hate the holiday season, your personal fulfillment still comes from within. (Barf!) And so, if you taken no pleasure in the festive music and the colorful decorations and the promise of gifts and the company of loved ones, find something that DOES give you pleasure.

DALLAS — In much of the rolling plains of West Texas, a blizzard has never been recorded.

There has been one now.

327   285 How often does it normally snow around Dallas? I know nothing about Texas weather beyond that Houston and San Antonio are hot and humid during the summer and West Texas is arid desert. If/when I move to Texas it's going to be to Houston or San Antonio.

Posted by: wherestherum at December 25, 2009 12:49 AM (gofDd)

One hellish summer in Houston will probably make you yearn for Dallas. Look into Austin or its outlying area. It is beautiful country around there, especially the Hill Country. San Antonio is OK, if you live in the northwest or up the road in Boerne (Hill Country again). The rest of the town is mostly shit.

I live way out in West Texas. I love the desert.

The town were I live has some kind of misted anesthetic that makes people that don't even know each other smile and wave. It took me a while to get used to it, but now I really like it, and I notice its absence when I go across the bridge and into San Diego.

When Mrs. Five and I got married a few years back, the husband of her maid of honor had to make a late flight out from Jersey the day before the wedding.  Poor guy had gone clubbing in the City the night before, hopped on a plane to Cedar Rapids (why he flew ther I don't know) and then got in a rental car for the five-hour drive through cornfields to the tiny little town that Mrs. Five's parents live in.  And then realizes that his is definitely the only black face in a town of maybe 100 people. You have to dunk em' in cold water real fast to save them. We summer in KBPT, ME. just for our 3 bullies.

Posted by: sickinmass at December 25, 2009 02:08 AM (Dxfei)

They weren't my bullies, but my girlfriend got home from work (she used to fly as an emergency nurse in the Hermann Hospital lifeflight hospital) and found them outside our door, half-keeled over. I had to find the owners the next morning and tell them.

She and a policeman got them under a hose, but the older one later went into cardiac arrest at the emergency vet's and died. I took care of the younger one until we located the owners.

408 I didn't know there were places left in this state, that were near major population centers, where door locks were still optional, the neighbors helpful but not wanting to get into your business, and the police were really into preventing or solving crime. Hope Ranch in Santa Barbara is like that. Nice little subdivision in the nicer part of Santa Barbara. I have a friend who's parents live there and the subdivision has its own private beach.

Come spend more time in LA. It will disabuse you of that notion. The anger on the Westside is almost palpable.

I used to work at UCLA for a few years and I didn't think the Westside was all that bad. Not terribly happy, but not as bad as it is in other parts of LA.

Come down to Coronado Island, it's a totally different vibe from the whole rest of the LA area, or anywhere else on the planet for that matter.

413 Fa Cube, I have actually managed to avoid the kissers, but the huggers, they are aplenty. I always find it weird people want to hug me good bye after just meeting me unless we really clicked or something. When I met Liz at the meetup in CT it was like meeting a long lost sister. That's a pretty rare occurrence, though.

427 >>Sadly, the union idiots did it to themselves.  They never learn, it seems...Posted by: Hatchet Five ...

'Twas the night before Christmas and Santa's a wreck...
How to live in a world that's politically correct?

His workers no longer would answer to "Elves",
"Vertically Challenged" they were calling themselves.

And labor conditions at the north pole
Were alleged by the union to stifle the soul.

Four reindeer had vanished, without much propriety,
Released to the wilds by the Humane Society.

And equal employment had made it quite clear
That Santa had better not use just reindeer.

So Dancer and Donner, Comet and Cupid,
Were replaced with 4 pigs, and you know that looked stupid!?

The runners had been removed from his sleigh;
The ruts were termed dangerous by the E.P.A.

And people had started to call for the cops
When they heard sled noises on their roof-tops.

Second-hand smoke from his pipe had his workers quite frightened.
His fur trimmed red suit was called "Unenlightened."

And to show you the strangeness of life's ebbs and flows:
Rudolf was suing over unauthorized use of his nose
And had gone on Geraldo, in front of the nation,
Demanding millions in over-due compensation.

So, half of the reindeer were gone; and his wife,
Who suddenly said she'd enough of this life,
Joined a self-help group, packed, and left in a whiz,
Demanding from now on her title was Ms.

And as for the gifts, why, he'd ne'er had a notion
That making a choice could cause so much commotion.

Nothing of leather, nothing of fur,
Which meant nothing for him. And nothing for her.

Nothing that might be construed to pollute.
Nothing to aim. Nothing to shoot.
Nothing that clamored or made lots of noise.
Nothing for just girls. Or just for the boys.
Nothing that claimed to be gender specific.
Nothing that's warlike or non-pacific.
No candy or sweets...they were bad for the tooth.
Nothing that seemed to embellish a truth.

And fairy tales, while not yet forbidden,
Were like Ken and Barbie, better off hidden.

For they raised the hackles of those psychological
Who claimed the only good gift was one ecological.

No baseball, no football...someone could get hurt;
Besides, playing sports exposed kids to dirt.

Dolls were said to be sexist, and should be passe;
And Nintendo would rot your entire brain away.

So Santa just stood there, disheveled, perplexed;
He just could not figure out what to do next.

He tried to be merry, tried to be gay*,
But you've got to be careful with that word today.
*Will ace banhammer me?

His sack was quite empty, limp to the ground;
Nothing fully acceptable was to be found.

Something special was needed, a gift that he might
Give to all without angering the left or the right.

A gift that would satisfy, with no indecision,
Each group of people, every religion;
Every ethnicity, every hue,
Everyone, everywhere...even you.

So here is that gift, it's price beyond worth...

"May you and your loved ones enjoy peace on earth."

SiM to my lovely friends.. I love you.

I think there will some gains made in the Senate, and a bit more in the House, but the Pubbies really screwed the pooch pretty over the past 9 years.

I'd say three-four pickups in the Senate and around 20+ in the House. Not nearly enough to control. But Obama will face a disaster in 2012, if the Pubbies don't do something stupid.

442 With respect to the Senate, I think the GOP's big chance comes in 2012.  Democrats have 22 seats to defend.  That's a lot.  They just aren't going to have that much money, especially with Obama's re-election effort sucking up all of the funding away from everyone else.

Posted by: chemjeff at December 24, 2009 10:46 PM (Gk/wA)

443 I'm thinking it would take a monumental tidal wave to get the Senate back.  Right now I would rate controlling the House in Jan 2011 at 50-50.  My fear is that the idiot McConnell with a Senate majority would become the best thing to happen to Ozero's chances of re-election in 2012.  He just doesn't seem to ever get it through his head that the Dems are not gentlemen, not his friends, and have forfeited any claim to being treated as such.

460 FYI, from the Cook Political Report:

The Cook Political Report now has 174 seats in the Solid Democratic column; 44 others rated as Likely Democrat, meaning not yet but potentially competitive; and 23 more seats in the Lean Democratic column, meaning competitive.

There are 19 seats rated as Toss Up, in which neither party can claim a clear advantage. There are eight seats in the Lean Republican column, 16 in the Likely Republican group and 151 rated as Solidly Republican.

Put in a more understandable format, the current number of Solid and Likely Democratic seats is 218, coincidentally the barest possible majority.

Yeah, my friend from Bowdoin was a great admirer of JLC. Friend went to theological seminary after Bowdoin and his first parish after graduation was in Roswell, Georgia. He went to a Civil War reenactment with the church youth group his first summer at that church and said that when the boys in blue came matching down the road to the battlefield he cheered because he was getting homesick for Maine at that point. And the kids looked at him like he had three heads or something.

Apropos of Chamberlain at Gettysburg-- I grew up about a two hours' drive from the town and visited the battlefield several times. It is quite an experience to stand where the 20th Maine was posted on Little Round Top.

488 Being a history major is a leap of faith. What was your concentration in? I wanted to do American history, but UCLA doesn't really offer a lot of courses for US history. I took a little of everything, but really enjoyed ME and medieval/European history. I took maybe 3 courses that were US centered and 2 that were South America centered. Everything else was ME, medieval and Europe.

Posted by: Hatchet Five at December 24, 2009 11:14 PM (qB3D9)

494 kbdabear, you're using economic logic to try to understand unions.  That won't work.  You have to use union logic to understand unions.  It goes something like this:  Economic recovery begins when companies pay people more.  Because, when people are paid more, they spend more and buy more things.  How do you get companies to pay more?  Through union representation and negotiating obscene pay raises under the threat of business-crushing strikes.  And by using the power of government to mandate things like "living wages".  That way everyone will be prosperous!

Except companies will go out of business.

Posted by: chemjeff at December 24, 2009 11:15 PM (Gk/wA)

495 do you think Carly Fiorina might oust Boxer? I honestly don't know. I don't know how good her name recognition is for SoCal. I know Devore is also running for Boxer's seat and I know him better from John and Ken. I'm more inclined to vote for him, but I wonder if he's like McClintock and is "too conservative." Meg Whitman has been running ads the last month already. I guess she's hoping to get her name out there as much as she can.

I've been taking some history correspondence courses over the years. It is wonderful.

I've been learning some Middle English as well.

When you're in the sciences (geology and geophysics, mostly), they don't offer a lot of elective hours, so most of us get very little history. UT/Austin is strong on learning languages, however, so I took Russian and German.

I took a lot of ancient history as well as medieval and ended up specializing in sixteenth-century Germany. I enjoyed the Latin and Greek courses almost as much as the history seminars. I have a good friend (actually, she gave me my third kitteh when her dopey husband wanted to put their cats to sleep) who completed a Ph.D. in medieval studies at Cornell. She's in Ann Arbor now so I don't see her very often but we keep in touch. We still joke about being "Middle Aged."

Not original, and well over a decade and a half old, but a good idea of how the different UC schools viewed each other.

I notice there isn't one for UCOP (Office of the President).

How many UC San Diego students does it take to change a lightbulb?
Two: one to mix the margaritas and one to call the electrician.
*******************

How many UC Santa Cruz students does it take to change a lightbulb?
Eleven: one to change the lightbulb and ten to share the experience.
*******************

How many UC Davis students does it take to change a lightbulb?
None. Davis doesnÂ’t have electricity.
*******************

How many UC San Francisco students does it take to change a lightbulb?
Two: one to change the lightbulb and one to crack under the pressure.
*******************

How many UC Santa Barbara students does it take to change a lightbulb?
Only one, but he gets six credits for it.
*******************

How many UC Berkeley students does it take to change a lightbulb?
Seventy-six: one to change the lightbulb, fifty to protest the lightbulbÂ’s right not to change, and twenty-five to hold a counter protest.
*******************

How many UC Riverside students does it take to change a lightbulb?
None: Riverside looks better in the dark.
*******************

How many UC Irvine students does it take to change a lightbulb?
One to hire the undocumented worker mowing the lawn to do it for them.
*******************

How many UCLA students does it take to change a lightbulb?
One: She holds the lightbulb and the world revolves around her.

kdabear, unions, as wtr noted, are the bane of California. We may have a chance of whacking at them since Meg Whitman is absolutely spoiling for a major, bloody battle with them, and Californians (I think) are getting wise to how damaging they are.

I swear, if we can just whack those guys we might be able to train up Cali voters enough to send that Repub to the Senate when the horrid DiFi is up for re-election.

Old friend of mine from UT/Austin. Big leftie. He taught in the philosophy department at UT (Marcuse, Marxist theory), and is now one of the heads of UCLA's education school. Rabid as hell and very public.

I'm his philosophical opposite and we had some real battles back then.

573 Well I'm going to bed - no Santa for me but at least I have my life and my liberty

574 kdabear, unions, as wtr noted, are the bane of California. We may have a chance of whacking at them since Meg Whitman is absolutely spoiling for a major, bloody battle with them, and Californians (I think) are getting wise to how damaging they are.

Ahnuld made a huge mistake putting out propositions that were necessary in 2005, an off year for turnout. The unions dug up the dead to vote them down while everyone else was barely aware there were elections, and the vote was in May rather than November.

Ahnuld threw in the towel after that, and not only decided to join them if he couldn't beat them, but he led the spending binge.

575 Nite my fellow morons, enjoy your Christmas

576 Is anyone else unable to sleep? I mean besides little kids awaiting their presents from Santa. Cannot for the life of me, get back to sleep. Well, I hope everyone finds the gifts they've been asking Santa for under the tree.

577 Sassypants..
If this won't put you back to sleep..nothing will.

--Lost X Files Christmas episode--

Mulder: We're too late. It's already been here.

Scully: Mulder, I hope you know what you are doing.

Mulder: Look, Scully, just like the other homes: Douglas fir, truncated, mounted, transformed into some sort of shrine; halls decked with boughs of holly; stockings hung by the chimney, with care.

Scully: You really think someone's been here?

Mulder: Someone or some thing.

Scully: Mulder, over here--it's fruitcake.

Mulder: Don't touch it! Those things can be lethal.

Scully: It's O.K. There's a note attached: "Gonna find out who's naughty and nice."

Mulder: It's judging them, Scully. It's making a list.

Scully: Who? What are you talking about?

Mulder: Ancient mythology tells of an obese humanoid entity who could travel at great speed in a craft powered by antlered servants. Once each year, near the winter solstice, this creature is said to descend from the heavens to reward its followers and punish its disbelievers with jagged chunks of anthracite.

Scully: But that's legend, Mulder--a story told by parents to frighten children. Surely, you don't believe it?

Mulder: Something was here tonight, Scully. Check out the bite marks on this gingerbread man. Whatever tore through this plate of cookies was massive -- and in a hurry.

Scully: It left crumbs everywhere. And look, Mulder, this milk glass has been completely drained.

Mulder: It gorged itself, Scully. It fed without remorse.

Scully: But why would they leave it milk and cookies?

Mulder: Appeasement. Tonight is the Eve, and nothing can stop its wilding.

Scully: But if this thing does exist, how did it get in? The doors and windows were locked. There's no sign of forced entry.

Mulder: Unless I miss my guess, it came through the fireplace.

Scully: Wait a minute, Mulder. If you are saying some huge creature landed on the roof and came down the chimney, you're crazy. The flue is barely six inches wide. Nothing could get through there.

Mulder: But what if it could alter its shape, move in all directions.

Scully: You mean, like a bowl full of jelly?

Mulder: Exactly. Scully, I've never told anyone this, but when I was a child my home was visited. I saw the creature. It had long white strips of fur surrounding its ruddy, misshapen head. Its bloated torso was red and white. I'll never forget the horror. I turned away, and when I looked back it had somehow taken on the facial features of my father.

Scully: Impossible.

Mulder: I know what I saw. And that night it read my mind. It brought me a Mr. Potato Head, Scully. IT KNEW I WANTED A MR. POTATO HEAD. Scully: I'm sorry, Mulder, but you're asking me to disregard the laws of physics. You want me to believe in some supernatural being who soars across the skies and brings gifts to good little girls and boys. Listen to what you are saying. Do you understand the repercussions? If this gets out, they'll close the X-files.

Mulder: Scully, listen to me: It knows when you are sleeping. It knows when you're awake.

Scully: But we have no proof.

Mulder: Last year, on this exact date, S.E.T.I. radio telescopes detected bogeys in the airspace over twenty-seven states. The White House ordered a Condition Red.

Scully: But that was a meteor shower.

Mulder: Officially. Two days ago, eight prized Scandinavian reindeer vanished from the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. Nobody - not even the zookeeper - was told about it. The government doesn't want people to know about Project Kringle. They fear that if this thing is proved to exist, then the public would stop spending half its annual income in a holiday shopping frenzy. Retail markets will collapse. Scully, they cannot let the world believe this creature lives. There's too much at stake. They'll do whatever it takes to insure another silent night.

Scully: Mulder, I --

Scully: On the roof. It sounds like . . . a clatter.

Mulder: The truth is up there. Let's see what's the matter...

578 Ummmm.... Thanks, SiM. But by the time you posted that, I fell asleep and now just woke up at 10:00 AM. Hope everyone is thrilled with Santa's gifts. We have a ton of movies we rented - if the little one ever allows us to watch them. Merry Christmas all!

579 I'm still amazed they kept the airport named after him.
