Happy New Year!

And welcome to the last ONT of 2009 all. I'm so glad you all made it here tonight.

new_year_jayne.jpg

I think for most of us 2009 was a pretty sucky year. And of course to cap it off the comments are down so you'll have to direct your drunken yells over to the old New Site in the top post back up again.

68 Happy New Year to all Morons!

With the signing of an under-publicized amendment to Executive Order 12425, Barack Obama has fundamentally altered your constitutional rights. His actions are undermining your rights to protect personal privacy from a foreign internationalist police agency named Interpol.
Interpol is the enforcement arm of the International Criminal Court, or ICC. The United States never signed onto the Rome Treaty, which created the ICC, because of the potential for abuse by foreign interests. Obama has signaled he may sign the treaty over these objections and subject Americans to prosecution overseas in the ICC. This is harmful for two reasons. First, the U.S. Constitution clearly states that it is the supreme law of our land, and allowing the ICC to supersede the U.S. Constitution violates America's sovereignty. Second, the War on Terror is unpopular with Europeans, and the ICC may attempt to prosecute heroic American soldiers with trumped-up war crimes. Obama is putting brave American men and women at grave risk.

An added wrinkle to this executive order is that Interpol's operations center for the United States is housed within our own Justice Department. Many of the agents are Americans who work under the aegis of Interpol. This order has potentially created the new civilian security force that Obama proposed during his campaign. This group of law-enforcement officials is no longer subject to the restraints enshrined in the U.S. Constitution.

The order guarantees that Interpol officers have immunity from prosecution for crimes they may commit in the United States. Ironically, some Interpol nations are attempting to try American intelligence agents for their work abroad in the War on Terror.

This order shows blatant disregard for the U.S. Constitution. While Obama is extending due process rights to terrorists he is weakening those same rights for American citizens. If a citizen were to be prosecuted by Interpol, their newly granted immunity would interfere with the discovery process. Since Interpol files are immune to disclosure, a citizen could be denied his right to see the information used to prosecute him or her.

Obama's executive order has done more to weaken civil liberties than the much-maligned Patriot Act. The silence in the mainstream media on this issue should scare all freedom-loving Morons. Obama just signed away parts of our precious legal protections.

Never, never, never give up.

TSA Withdraws Subpoenas Against Bloggers

In the wake of public outcry against the Transportation Security Administration for serving civil subpoenas on two bloggers, the government agency has canceled the legal action and apologized for the strong-arm tactics agents used.
____

You're doing a heckuva job there, Eric Holder.

==========

Some good news to end/start the year:

Judge throws out Blackwater guards' charges in Iraqi deaths

A federal judge in Washington on Thursday dismissed criminal charges against five Blackwater security guards accused of killing 17 unarmed Iraqi civilians in an incident that strained U.S.-Iraq relations and sparked an outcry over the military's use of private contractors.

The judge did not rule on the substance of the charges against the security guards, but instead decided that prosecutors had wrongly relied on what the guards told State Department investigators shortly after the incident. As government contractors, the Blackwater employees were required to speak to an investigator after a shooting.

U.S. District Judge Ricardo Urbina said that the use of these statements -- which were given with a promise of immunity -- violated the defendants' rights against compelled self-incrimination.

"In their zeal to bring charges against the defendants . . . the government used compelled statements to guide its charging decisions . . . and ultimately, to obtain the indictment in this case," the judge wrote in a 90-page opinion.

The efforts of prosecutors and investigators to show that their case did not hinge on compelled testimony "were all too often contradictory, unbelievable and lacking in credibility," Urbina wrote.

Because the indictment was thrown out on legal grounds, the government could bring an appeal. It could also re-charge the guards, although a new prosecution could be difficult given the judge's finding that the case was so thoroughly tainted.

[ . . . ]

Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.), who has in the past sponsored legislation that would prohibit the hire of private military contractors, said she was dismayed by the news.
---------
Respectfully, Jan, stick it up your ass.

I'm hoping it is, but no one outside the Central Valley seems to be aware of it. It's not a huge issue here in LA, even though it should be since we stole our water from the Central Valley. I don't think the farmers unions are powerful enough. They have nowhere near the pull that the teachers and prison guards have. The legislature is so insulated nothing touches them. It's frustrating. And it's hurting Mexicans. Since it has nothing to do with illegal immigration (at the moment), the legislature doesn't give a rat's ass.

300 Can the water in the Central Valley be used as an issue with any success? I know it's hurting people in that area tremendously.

The Central Valley is pretty reliably conservative, so Sacramento and Washington could give a rat's ass if the area depopulates or dies.

A large share of the produce that the liberal health nuts eat comes from that valley, but I'm hearing that the food processors are importing from China now.

Those same leftist dipshits who are shutting down the Central Valley have veggie stores telling you the produce is local and instructs you to always buy local. Where the fuck do these hippie dickwads think "local" is, West Covina?

I don't know what Stonewall Hard Tobacco is (chew?) but be careful with that too.  The incidence of head and neck cancer and chew is very high.  It is amazing how smoking makes lungs so black.  I work in cardiac surgery, and you can always tell who the smokers are if you open the pleura and look at their lungs.  Again, good luck!  I know it's hard.

runningrn,

Stonewall is a tobacco lozenge that fits right down in the corner of your mouth and helps with the nicotine craving. There is no juice or any of that to deal with. Still, it is nicotine and all that but only four or five are used each day. And right now, I'll take that over smoking hands down.

Down the road, maybe I'll dump those too. But for now, I want to get my wind back.

'Bit late late as I just realized today is also (officially) my adopted pound puppy's 14th Birthday!

According to my veterinarian all dogs' birthdays are Jan. 1st.

Kind of occurred to me as I started to hear some of the fireworks and gunshots at the midnight hour here and wondered how much her calm demeanor had to do with with the amazing levels of confidence she has developed since I first brought her home or her incipient deafness...

Happy B-Day girl!  You get one of those god awful gourmet chewy bones that you lurve and which obviously do you no good the next day.

S' Okay, I'm taking the day off tomorrow.  I'll be there waiting for when you get that puzzled look on your face about that says "Now? Really?"

I stopped to use a gas station bathroom at a Shell in St. Louis and the bathroom was hidden behind a soda rack. Coors light used to be my Mom and DadÂ’s drink of choice when I was growing up. Of course we lived in Colorado so they had that for an excuse.

529 Plus, there wasn't much spectroscopy until recently, so chemists had to know lots of chemical reagents for investigating whatever was of interest.

Posted by: eman at January 01, 2010 02:43 AM (Cctty)

I beg to differ, but I studied spectroscopy back in the Pleistocene with my handy-dandy Morrison and Boyd Organic Chemistry, third edition.

I did get some nice syntheses for TNT and heavy-metal acetylides out of it, though.

TexasJew, I always thought that about Dick Clark as well. Or that heÂ’s actually been dead for a while and they have a muppet that takes his place.

I loved American Bandstand. Not in the 50s obviously. In the 70s. I was very little, but my sisters were teenagers so we watched it religiously. “Great beat, I can dance to it!”

I don't think that Richard Wagner was born after John Williams, since that would make Williams around 173 years old. Let me Wiki that - that's such a reliable source.

I once got stuck in my apartment years ago in northern Oklahoma during a massive blizzard, and all I had in the fridge were two large bottles of expensive Moet champagne. I called Domino's had them order a large pizza to me in the snow and ate the whole pie and drank both bottles. Was I bombed - It was being on LSD. Nothing better than a major champagne high.

737 734 Hmm according to monster.com 13 people have looked at my resume. I haven't been contacted since November by anyone, though.

Job hunting is going to suck.

745 PGiS why are you job hunting? is your job going away?

Posted by: chemjeff at January 01, 2010 12:29 AM (Gk/wA)

746 wow Jan & Feb 2010 are going to be super-busy for me

Posted by: chemjeff at January 01, 2010 12:30 AM (Gk/wA)

747 PGiS, I wish I was one of those well connected types who could take advantage of nepotism. Sadly I'm one of the most unconnected people in the world. I do know someone who owns a very successful production company, but the times I tried asking her for help weren't very productive. And I didn't want to pester her because she's so busy.

Chemjeff, I havenÂ’t had a job in 10 years, I retired young from a certain software company located in Redmond. But, I can no longer depend on the stock market IÂ’m afraid, so I need to get a real job sometime in the next 2 years.

751 Well on my way, chemjeff.

Interesting conversations I've caught up on. Think I'll have to scour the archives for the infamous Memorial Day thread, since I heard about it on the other site.

Like I said, I read AoS during the day. This is a treat to stay up and play.

Posted by: wherestherum at January 01, 2010 12:38 AM (gofDd)

755 Wow PGiS that's amazing - so are you a programmer? what kind of job are you looking for? why not start your own company?

756 756 All I ask is for a job that I enjoy, gives me decent sick and vacation time, and pays me $40-50k/yr. Is that a lot to ask?

Starting?  Yeah it is actually - unfortunately

Posted by: chemjeff at January 01, 2010 12:39 AM (Gk/wA)

757

OK I am eating my way through the kitchen now. Great, 2010 is starting with me being the human vacuum cleaner, whatÂ’s that about?

Honestly, my divorce didnÂ’t help the finances either, but that was 7 years ago. He still works for the large software company, and lives in a multi million dollar home on a lake. But, hey, IÂ’m only slightly bitter that he ended up with more then me despite us living in a community property state. Lawyers are sometimes helpful and sometimes not. LetÂ’s just say mine wasnÂ’t.

Posted by: chemjeff at January 01, 2010 12:41 AM (Gk/wA)

760

No, not a programmer unfortunately. Boeing is located in Renton, not Redmond Jay. And thankfully I no longer own stock in the company I worked for, havenÂ’t in years.

Posted by: ParanoidGirlInSeattle at January 01, 2010 12:42 AM (RZ8pf)

761 Starting? Yeah it is actually - unfortunately In LA? One HR person I talked to for a job I interviewed for asked how I wanted to make starting and I told her the above amount. She said that was reasonable and could be negotiated. Then she said other people had asked for $75k. For a paralegal/secretary position. Can you imagine? That takes chutzpah.

The thing I like about listening to the police scanner is that no matter how effed up you think your life is, it proves to you over and over again that there are people out there who have way more effed up lives then you.

Posted by: ParanoidGirlInSeattle at January 01, 2010 12:46 AM (RZ8pf)

768 Sorry PGiS, bad attempt at a joke.

And being a programmer isn't that great either, sometimes! From using the product, I'm sure that's true at the company in Redmond! At least they pay, it seems.

Posted by: Jay in Ames at January 01, 2010 12:46 AM (LJaVO)

769 wtr, I would hope that you could get 40-50k in SoCal. Sounds like it's expensive to live out there. I'm happy with that out here in flyover country.

770 PGiS that is why I listen to Dr. Laura

771 No love for the Bilal man on New Years?

Posted by: Bilal the lover at January 01, 2010 12:51 AM (SwkdU)

772 Thanks, Jay. Yeah, LA is ridiculously expensive. And yet not nearly as bad as San Fran or NYC. If I was living in NYC I'd ask for $75k starting. At least in LA I have the benefit of living at home.

Posted by: wherestherum at January 01, 2010 12:52 AM (gofDd)

773

I know Jay, just giving you a hard time. I donÂ’t think they pay as much as they used to. And it isnÂ’t true actually that I havenÂ’t worked in 10 years; IÂ’ve had several contract gigs. But they dried up a year ago in the massive lay-off cost cutting.

Posted by: ParanoidGirlInSeattle at January 01, 2010 12:53 AM (RZ8pf)

774 WTR well my sister makes $25K living in Houston, granted she's not a paralegal but still $40K may be asking a lot for starting salary

775

IÂ’m starting in on the candy, I guess IÂ’d better go to bed before I begin chewing up the furniture or something.

Happy New Year to my favorite people in the universe who keep me sane when the world is going to hell in a hand basket around us.

And thanks Rum, for helping me tonight, I really needed it and you were there for me. Hugs!!!

776 good night PGiS see u soon on an ONT

Posted by: chemjeff at January 01, 2010 12:54 AM (Gk/wA)

777 Cost of living in Houston was way, way less than LA though. I could probably live well enough on that in Houston. I was barely making $27k as a paralegal in LA and that's because the firm I worked for severely underpaid everyone. The office manager still makes less than $50k and she should be making at least that.

Posted by: wherestherum at January 01, 2010 12:55 AM (gofDd)

778 I'm related to those people on the scanner, and they are even more effed up than it sounds.

Posted by: kurtilator at January 01, 2010 12:55 AM (juh4Z)

779 Hugs back atcha, PGiS! Anytime you need anything just send me an email. Have a good night!

780 I suppose I should go to bed, too. Got some baking and packing ahead of me later in the day. Good night!

Posted by: wherestherum at January 01, 2010 12:56 AM (gofDd)

781 Those contract gigs dried up in the middle of the country, too, PGiS. Lots of contract workers looking for the full time gigs now. Going for the stability now, instead of the big bucks the contract jobs used to seem to pay.

Posted by: Jay in Ames at January 01, 2010 12:57 AM (LJaVO)

really? i didn't think LA was that much more expensive than Houston

nevertheless, there's the intangible cost of experience

799 Weird dream last night.  I took my 1973 Toyota Celica, which I haven't owned since 1981, to Syracuse University, where I had to do something related to a class or administration. I graduated in 81 and I haven't been on campus five times since.  Anyway, I had a cat in the car, and it got towed or stolen - I woke up before I found out which.

Don't mix champagne and beer.   My advice is always too late, and free.

805 An important task of an interviewer is to get past or clear up any fuzzy language, puma store and if possible any fuzzy thinking. It is especially important in the context of "news" and essential in the context of the "law" that meanings be clear. Nevertheless, politicians are often deliberately blurry, and sometimes even the law can be.Many legislators, politicians, commentators and people generally still struggle with the meanings of "obscene," jordan 4 "speech," "equal," "marriage," perhaps surprisingly "human life," and recently "discrimination." At times thankfully long gone some people thought "humans" could be "property." china wholesale nike shoes Fortunately that has been resolved; there is no serious question. A "human" is no less human whatever the skin color, and "humans" cannot be "property."Of course there are dictionaries that can go a long way in clearing up meanings, for quite many things anyway. For example, does Richard Blumenthal's use of "in Vietnam" mean the same as "during the Vietanam conflict" or "in southeast Asia during the war"?
