Overnight Open Thread - Solitary Voice Edition
— Ace

Hey it's a new experience to actually post the ONT for once. Sadly I'm kind of tapped out after today so you'll have entertain yourselves like you usually do.

The Minimum Legal Age For Men to Marry Across the World
So I wonder if kids from the Congo sneak over to the Sudan to get married. And I'm sure that Saudi Arabia will have some fancy socio-religious-cause-we're-rich reason for having no marriage age, but hey they're an aberration even by arab standards. You can see the woman's chart here.

Shoe Mania? Women 'more likely to remember first pair of shoes rather than first kiss'
Maybe not so shocking if you've been reading the ONT for a while.

Houses In The Middle Of Nowhere
Still nothing beats the secret lighthouse I live in. And by lighthouse I mean a cramped walk-up apartment.

Style Guidelines for Suicide Notes
"No matter how strong the urge, do not add a P.S. quip. It just looks desperate, and you don't want to seem desperate in a suicide note."

Hipsters Vs. the Hasidic in Williamsburg
Okay I think the Hasidics are in the wrong here, but hipsters are so damn annoying and pretentious I can't bring myself to defend them.

Pie eating competitors to be drug tested
For drugs and artificial lubricants

Tonight's post brought to you by the more famous ace:

21 Oh, and this peeved me today. I was at Borders looking for a book to get my dad for Xmas (ended up getting the Secret Service tell all -- read some of it in line and it looks juicy and it confirms that Reagan was a nice guy as were the Bushes) and I was browsing the non fiction new paperbacks. I see Sarah Palin's face on the cover and I think it's a new book, but no. It was that retarded lookalike the Demented Left released to fool people. I couldn't find her book ANYWHERE on the main floor displays. They did have Glenn Beck's newest book and Mark Levin displayed. But no Sarah Palin book. I won't be going back to Borders anytime soon.

How delicious if the sacredest of sacred cows of the left gets SP the presidency because she makes sense to people who aren't Gaia drones, but do want to consider themselves conservationist and environmentally prudent?

29 You guys really know how to take an already weak premise and just auger it into the dirt.

Posted by: Beppo at December 15, 2009 05:58 PM (CvvEA)

30 Why is Governor Schwarzenegger pushing for the same sorts of policies in Copenhagen that have helped drive his state into record deficits and unemployment? Perhaps he will recall that I live in our nation’s only Arctic state and that I was among the first governors to create a sub-cabinet to deal specifically with climate change. While I and all Alaskans witness the impacts of changes in weather patterns firsthand, I have repeatedly said that we can’t primarily blame man’s activities for those changes. And while I did look for practical responses to those changes, what I didn’t do was hamstring Alaska’s job creators with burdensome regulations so that I could act “greener than thou” when talking to reporters.

Jane's melatonin must've kicked in early.

Speaking of, this story will make your stomach turn......

Big news here today is that a daycare (a church daycare!) is investigating a few employees that were grinding up melatonin and putting in candy they were giving to the kids so they would sleep better. It's a natural drug, yes, but what would possess these people to even think that's right. And the parents weren't even notified in a proper manner--they sent a letter home with the kids.

I could not believe that when I heard it.

88 Hey all, Jane Ace D'oh, how's your son? Been thinking about you guys with all the Afghan talk. Hope he's well. First kiss-I was 15, he was 23 and an Air Force Officer. Our parents knew each other very well, so they were okay with us dating. But I married a Marine. A better kisser. And other things. First shoes? Do they mean what I wore as a baby? Or the first pair I bought myself? Parameters, people, parameters . (And my first pair of "shoes" were David Evins Pumps that I got for sorority rush. Gorgeous pumps, and I ended up with virtually every pair they made, including stompy boots. Sadly, the company folded.)

106 I remember being five years old in the car, inspecting my shoes. The right shoe had the word "RIGHT" and the left shoe, "LEFT".

Zimriel, that is sooooo cute!  All I ever had were those little red buckle kind with the perforations.  There weren't a lot of options for kids shoes back in the 50s.  Never had sneakers until I was older, though.  Or jeans, come to think of it.  My mom disapproved of them.

114 So, we'll go no more a roving
So late into the night,
Though the heart be still as loving,
And the moon be still as bright.

For the sword outwears its sheath,
And the soul wears out the breast,
And the hearth must pause to breathe,
And love itself have rest.

Though the night was made for loving,
And the days return too soon,
Yet we'll go no more a roving
By the light of the moon.

Okay what exactly is a Hipster?  I've heard that term before but I don't really know what it means

You know that part of Conan the Destroyer, where Conan is in that room with mirrors on all sides that reflect reflections ad infinitum?

Hipsters do the same thing, but with irony in place of mirrors.

410 395, Earlier today it was revealed Andi Sullivan has helpers that post on his blog, but use his byline. After being caught Andi switched to a singular voice blog. The cerebral juices thing came from an excuse made by Andi's co-bloggers. They meant it to mean their minds were as one.

Posted by: eman at December 15, 2009 07:55 PM (yf/JJ)

411 @393: Bohemia is the historic name of the Czech Republic, being called that by the Romans before the Czechs ever arrived there, sometime in the 600's. The name refers to an ancient Celtic tribe called the Boii. The government there wants to avoid calling the country "Bohemia" because the Sudeten Germans - expelled after WW2 - could then say they are "Bohemians" too and use it as an argument to be allowed to return. So the place is stuck with the awkward name, "Czech Republic." Just in case anyone cares less.

We all know by now what reconciliation is. THERE WERE ALWAYS 51 VOTES. IF YOU'RE GOING TO SIT THERE AND TELL ME THAT THE REPUBLICANS CAN USE RECONCILIATION TO PASS GOD DAMN TAX CUTS FOR THE RICH, BUT DEMOCRATS DON'T HAVE THE COURAGE TO USE IT TO PASS MEANINGFUL, BENEFICIAL HEALTH COVERAGE REFORM, THEN YOU BETTER BELIEVE BY GOD I'M GOING TO STAY HOME IN NOVEMBER 2010."

Many many libs, leftoids, still do not understand that they have a real live Marxist in charge.  No a weak tit libtard, but a full fledged racially angry, I have Daddy issues,  Marxist.

Obama has very very little in common with his libtard compadres.  He isn't the entrenched lib, he is a Marxist.  He means it.  They are just liberal and weak.  They want money money money and power.  Obama wants to make America in Soviet Union West.  The LIBS policies in fact move us closer to Soviet style crap, but the Marxist ideology isn't embraced by Reid, Pelosi , et al, they merely nibble at the edges.  Obama is not a common libtard.

Obama is a loner.  He has sycophantic hangers on'ers, he has Kult Kool-aid kooks and he has a large portion of the Black Sheep.  If you are a SHEEPIE, black or otherwise, you follow, you don't think, you merely parrot the same excuses in support of your Shepherd Opie.  Those who are "dyed in the wool"  (what a fucking great pun) LIBTARDS feel CHEATED and JILTED.  As for Congress and the Senate?  They are retiring, prevaricating, and putting their fingers to the wind.   Obama is loyal to NO-ONE.   He shit on his own mother and grandmother, and wrote glowingly about his Muzz, Drunk, Socialist, Bigomist, Daddy, who abandoned him.  Obama has some serious psychological issues to deal with.

706 Hey I have an idea I wanted to bounce off the morons...

I know some of you want to connect offline but didn't want to exchange private info in an open forum. So I've been acting as a go-between, but I've been thinking of a way for morons to connect without losing their anonymity. Facebook would be a good solution except that I'm pretty sure you can't join anonymously.

So what I'm thinking of doing is setting up a private Yahoo group that would be moderated by some of the morons of semi-decent character. One good thing about yahoo is that you can create a profile using any name available and control exactly how much info is given out. Any group emails sent to your profile would privately get forwarded to your 'real' email address. Plus Yahoo had email, chat, and other Facebooky stuff.

Anyone interested? Thoughts?

Posted by: Hatchet Five at December 16, 2009 01:32 AM (OS2KR)

Well that is one thing I worry about. A lot of the ONT regulars seem to have migrated over to FB, but a lot still come to the ONT for the real time chat aspect.

A Yahoo group would really be more of a mailing list and clearing house than a chat site. Mostly it's a way for morons to find each other and talk privately if they want.

But I could be wrong which is why I wanted to see what the ONT regulars think.

Posted by: Mætenloch at December 15, 2009 09:39 PM (mQi3C)

734 Maet, it would also mean a big hit to Ace's website statistics.  I don't really know how web advertising works, but aren't rates related to website visits or something?  The ONT's are the only ones that routinely get 700+ posts per day and who knows how many more pageloads.  So maybe this idea is worth running by Ace first.

Actually, wasn't there supposed to be some sort of redesign of Ace's whole website?

737 We did lose ginger to FB. Is that what happened to ginger? I wondered. I don't think the Yahoo group is meant to replace the ONT. It's just a place where if we want to contact someone here, we can do it through the forum instead of blaring our emails on the blog.

Posted by: wherestherum at December 15, 2009 09:42 PM (gofDd)

738 Also, we wouldn't have to give our real names in the Yahoo group, as Maet said above. I think joining on FB means you have to give up your real identity? Unless FB is okay with people using aliases.

Posted by: wherestherum at December 15, 2009 09:43 PM (gofDd)

I emailed him but haven't heard anything back. But I know some of the morons already have gmail groups they use to coordinate things so it's not like it's unprecedented. And it's not designed to replace or cannibalize the ONT.

It's really intended just as a way for morons to hook up and share stuff without giving up too much privacy.

759 Well Maet as I said I think it will lead to the eventual elimination of the ONT, and lower website statistics for Ace (and whatever that will do for Ace's ad revenues).  But why not try to replicate those same features here on AoSHQ?  Can't we implement some of those desirable Yahoo-type features here?  That is why I asked about the AoSHQ redesign.  I remember there was some post a while ago from Ace, something like "yeah yeah, that new website will be here any day now".  Is that a serious possibility or is AoSHQ going to stay with this style and format forever?

Or, maybe those Yahoo-type features could be integrated into the existing site somehow so that people still come here for their AoSHQ-goodness and we don't lose this community of "smart military bloggers" that Ace has cultured.

Based on what little I've heard any mu.nu site improvements are coming 'real soon now'. So it could be a year or years away. And adding the Yahoo-stuff may be too difficult unless you move to a site that supports it or are a full-time bicyclist/programmer.

808 805 790, you can organize people you follow into various lists. Heather Radish has hers set up the best that I have seen. And I tend not to follow people who just tweet useless crap. Like MegMac, for example.
Posted by: Hatchet Five at December 16, 2009 02:14 AM (OS2KR)

Is that a Twitter feature or something that one of the clients adds on?

Posted by: Mætenloch at December 15, 2009 10:16 PM (mQi3C)

809 805- Yes, Hatchet Five and I have been tweeting each other when the ONT has a lull.

Posted by: Girl Thursday at December 15, 2009 10:16 PM (Oywr+)

810 Even if I was getting paid to stalk someone, I'd probably lose interest and start slacking off. Even a Kelly Hu lookalike with more knowledge of British history than most Brits?

812 812- I don't know about that. And, actually, I suspect it's not the real Vanilla Ice who's following me. I definitely had a fake Hasslehoff following me for a while.

816 818 Awesome. That movie never fails to amuse me. I've seen it a hundred times and I still love it.

817 It's probably less grand than you imagine. And it's not like I'm trying to go behind Ace's back in any way. It's really meant as a way to build an AoSHQ community in a more organized fashion. Especially for planning upcoming Aceapalooza.

Oh no Maet I wasn't accusing you of that.  I think you are well-intentioned.

Yeah, I know I've been remiss. I'm so swamped with emails and gathering links for the ONT that I barely have a chance to even look at tweets.

Posted by: Mætenloch at December 15, 2009 10:33 PM (mQi3C)

828 WTR, some things are fads, some really change things.  The Iranian protest movement this summer, for example - coordinated and reported on Twitter.  MySpace appears to be a dying fad, while Facebook has every old lady in the country following her grandkids on it, or so it would seem.

830 833- I agree with Hatchet. It's also a quick way to get tipped onto info without having to scan the Internet all day for stories.

Posted by: Girl Thursday at December 15, 2009 10:40 PM (Oywr+)

831 That's true, about Twitter. I still don't like having that much of a presence on the Internet. I'm sure Irony is laughing somewhere. The first time I heard about Twitter was on Leo Laporte's tech show and no one was really using it. Then it suddenly exploded into popularity. I just hate being part of things everyone uses. And maybe I'm like Crichton in that I just don't trust computers or the Internet, lol.

Posted by: wherestherum at December 15, 2009 10:40 PM (gofDd)

Okay I kinda thought maybe there was an underlying reason for your proposal.  You've been our unofficial go-between for personal email swapping; is that duty too burdensome?  Is it unfair for us to ask this of you?

Posted by: chemjeff at December 15, 2009 10:45 PM (F+U5/)

838 Shall I sing a song for you? What if I want out?

Posted by: wherestherum at December 15, 2009 10:46 PM (gofDd)

839 And maybe I'm like Crichton in that I just don't trust computers or the Internet, lol.

The key is you control how much goes on twitter or facebook.  My profile pic on both is the family dog, for example.

Posted by: Hatchet Five at December 15, 2009 10:46 PM (OS2KR)

840 Okay I see part of my problem with Twitter.  Apparently I am following 400 people.  I am now going through and removing most of them.  Who should I follow?

Posted by: chemjeff at December 15, 2009 10:47 PM (F+U5/)

841 My profile pic on both is the family dog, for example. That's my profile pic for Gmail. I have Stitch as my profile for Yahoo. I see where FB and Twitter are useful. I just don't want to be part of it. If I need to communicate with people, I generally already have their phone numbers and/or emails already.

Posted by: wherestherum at December 15, 2009 10:48 PM (gofDd)

842 I'm paying for text messages for a reason, aren't I?

Posted by: wherestherum at December 15, 2009 10:48 PM (gofDd)

843 I'm down to following 98 people

Posted by: fartbubble at December 15, 2009 10:49 PM (cBeTr)

844 Okay looking at the documentation it looks like Twitter lists do a lot of what I'm looking for but maybe not everything.

So it looks like someone would have to create an AoSHQMorons list and act as a gatekeeper as far as adding new interest morons. Then once you're added, you can follow the group and be able to direct message anyone else on it as well as broadcast.

So it could work but it seems like more hoops to jump through than just using a yahoo or gmail. Or am I missing a key benefit?

Posted by: Mætenloch at December 15, 2009 10:49 PM (mQi3C)

845 Hey what is this "list" thing on Twitter?  Is this new?

Posted by: chemjeff at December 15, 2009 10:50 PM (F+U5/)

846 Who should I follow?

Definitely not @planetromney

Posted by: Hatchet Five at December 15, 2009 10:50 PM (OS2KR)

847 845- Follow me, of course Ace and Gabe tweet fairly regularly. Steven Crowder and Adam Baldwin are entertaining to follow. A lot of the high-profile conservative chicks you guys crush on are on there. Definitely follow Sarah Palin, she has some good tweets.

Posted by: Girl Thursday at December 15, 2009 10:52 PM (Oywr+)

Posted by: chemjeff at December 16, 2009 02:45 AM (F+U5/)

No, the go-between stuff hasn't been a problem. I'm just thinking ahead on how to automate and scale it.

Posted by: Mætenloch at December 15, 2009 10:53 PM (mQi3C)

850 Twitter is a very open forum, though, isn't it? It's not as open as the comments here, but what you say to other people is open to the public, if I'm not mistaken. Plus you're limited to, what, 140 characters per tweet? I can see how that would be good for fast meet ups and the like, but what if we need to pass on more extensive info?

Posted by: wherestherum at December 15, 2009 10:53 PM (gofDd)

Yeah, I don't think there's any way to restrict your tweets to a certain group of people. So it's not quite a fit for what I'm looking for.

Posted by: Mætenloch at December 15, 2009 10:56 PM (mQi3C)

856 Rum, you have the option of making your profile private if you choose.  Then people have to be approved by you before they can follow you.  Most of them I don't worry about, even the "Michael Moore Megafan" who just started following me.  :/

FB wants a real identity on who you are due to the crackdowns on those predators who stalk the underaged online.

There are privacy settings just enhanced on FB, you can control who can even find your name in a search.

FB has emailing between members which would keep your information just between you and the recipient.

911 Yeah, as a non-Facebooker I'm curious how active it is. I don't think any of the co-bloggers are members so it's kind of an unknown.

It's not an active chat board, mostly it's bulletins with a few comments, most active is the moron who's who so people can find each other. Ginger and DrewM are moderators and your group membership has to be approved by them.

It's handy sometimes for those times when something happens here and the FB morons haven't noticed it or missed it, like banhammer and dum-dum's banning

Most of the discussion occurs on the FB member's wall when some article or status is posted and starts a little discussion. One moronette mentioned banhammer and it started a 60 comments string on her post.

912 I'm still doing all of mine from "web".  What is the big advantage to tweetdeck, really?

913 kbear, I've been getting email from @facebook that my email account tells me contains a virus. I don't have a facebook account anyway, so I'm guessing the emails are just phishing or spam. Have you seen this?

that's nothing, I've got about 13k in unread messages in my yahoo account

915 I have a hard enough time keeping up with 2 email accounts (and on both I have something like 200+ unread messages) So that's why I haven't heard from you. I promise I don't bite. Unless you want me to.

Posted by: wherestherum at December 15, 2009 11:38 PM (gofDd)

916 914- Tweetdeck lets you have several columns so that you can see DMs and Tweets mentioning you immediately rather than having to look them up. Also, you can have a facebook column. So, if you have Tweetdeck open, you can see Twitter and FB updates live. Also, you just click on a person's avatar to convo or retweet them. It's very handy for multitasking ADD types.

Okay I didn't realize DrewM was on the list. What I'm thinking of doing is kind of the same thing except with a lower barrier to entry. Plus you can use your AoS moniker and stay anonymous. I'm just gauging the interest out there.

925 chemjeff, what the hell are you doing that they locked you out of your account?

926 918 kbear,

I've been getting email from @facebook that my email account tells me contains a virus. I don't have a facebook account anyway, so I'm guessing the emails are just phishing or spam. Have you seen this?

Posted by: wherestherum at December 16, 2009 03:37 AM

Yeh, that's phishing without a doubt. I've set my FB not to send email copies to my regular email (the one you need to provide to sign up), otherwise you get a flood of hundreds of messages to your inbox that you've already read anyway.

Posted by: kbdabear at December 15, 2009 11:43 PM (sYxEE)

927 So I've been locked out of my own Twitter account so I think that means it's time for me to go to bed - oh and I have to be up at 6 AM tomorrow so WTH am I doing still talking to you???

Remember the rule when gauging interest impulsively in the wee hours. Initial interest degrades geometrically each step you take. That's why events have RSVP's

Hell yeah! Once you set it up it can take up to 20 hours to complete, but it's done on their servers. I guess it depends on how many emails you have stored. I had 700 when I applied the application.
Lot's of other apps too! I like the photo editing..better than Picasa3.

Yep. So far interest seems rather mild. On the other hand if FB and the other groups haven't hurt the blog, one more group probably won't either.

946 O/T
The Pentagon announced THIS MORNING the formation of
a new 500-man elite fighting unit called the : United States Redneck Special Forces (USRSF)
These mostly Southern boys will be dropped off into Afghanistan and will be given only the following facts about the Taliban and terrorists:
1. The season opened today.
2. There... is no limit.
3. They taste just like chicken.
4. They don't like beer, pickups, country music, or Jesus.
5. They are directly responsible for the death of Dale Earnhardt.
The Pentagon expects the problem in Afghanistan to be over by Friday.
Applications are available at your local Wal-Mart sporting goods counter.

949 On the other hand if FB and the other groups haven't hurt the blog, one more group probably won't either. I think it'll be nice to have a centralized group since the other ones are regionally based. Esp when Aceapalooza gets underway, like you said above. Ok, now I'm going to bed. 'Night!

Texas Czechs have been quite successful. LaGrange Texas was the home of both the famous whorehouse, and its famous kolaces.

If kolaces is pronouced as 'kolacheh' I think I know how to bake them and which I will be doing in the next few days.  My mother-in-law was a wonder at this and before she passed away she shared her secrets.
