The downside is that it uses x-ray diffraction instead of millimeter radar. So if you do a lot of traveling, you'll be exposed to a non-trivial amount of radiation though they claim that each scan is 50 times weaker than a normal x-ray. They already have systems like this for scanning checked bags, but they're very slow and can handle maybe 60 to 70 bags an hour. I doubt human scanners will be any faster.

Seeing Barry reminds me of someone in college of whom I have a very hazy memory of once saying she wanted to adopt a black kid. No reason I bring it up, except I definitely wouldn't have called her a liberal at the time. I never knew if it was idle speculation designed to feel me out or a the glint of a relentless waterfall within that would (gently) not have relented till it wore down opposition (towards adoption in general, that is).
As it was, I could not wear down her opposition, so I never found out...oh well. Did manage to graduate, though.

Yes, I liked that version of Blackadder the best as well.
We should really consider bringing back tights - and codpieces - for men!
Now for that list this one:
(
seems really out of place. Maybe British women are more devoted to housewifery than American wives, but I don't know many (any?) women who are so devoted to housework.
Of course, some take that to an extreme. A good friend of mine is at his wits end working full time (and bringing in 80% of the family income), taking care of three kids, and doing all the cooking, shopping, and cleaning. Oh, and he's having major surgery next week. I spent 1 1/2 with him on the phone yesterday trying to help him come up with a way to broach the subject with his (pretty shrewish, imho) wife without it turning into a trip to divorce court.
I'm not the best housekeeper on the planet, but some women are truly awful.

Elizabeth, ask Mortis to tell you when he realizes his place.
Mine came when I went with my wife for her first OB visit.
We're in the exam room. She's on the table and I'm sitting in a chair near the door.
The nurse busts in, flinging the door open and all but smashing me behind it and runs up to my wife saying "congratulations, how are you feeling". No "I'm sorry, sir" or "are you OK" until I mumbled something about "I'm fine too, not that anyone cares" as I moved out from behind the door.
Told my wife later that sort of underlined the point for me.

@58 - My pregnant wife was at a friends, tripped on a step and fell on her face. I took her to the hospital to get her checked out. Boy, did that nurse treat me like the Devil. She tried to ignore me, looked at me like she was thinking "Sure, she 'fell'", and even went so far as to deliberately turn the ultrasound screen away from me as I kept moving to try to see it.

Sassy - being without my laptop has really made me slow to be online at all. I have the ability to use the mans computer, but his keyboard sucks... plus he hasn't been working much lately due to a slow time of year so we have been spending lots of time together just hanging out.
I am already getting the icky smells thing. The combo of being prego and quitting smoking at the same time has really made my sense of smell go nuts. Tonight I would have sworn that my body lotion smelled like rotten milk. The man says it didn't but it just reeked so bad to me that I almost took another shower... thankfully that icky smell passed quickly though.
Lacey - lately I have been craving lots of gummi bears. Strange since I didn't like gummi bears for the past 15 years, but they are one of my favorite foods now

Did you see the "color" trick on yesterday's status updates??
(if you don't have it, there was this mass email asking women to just state the color of their bra on their status updates to stand in solidarity of breast cancer awareness. Of course it was fun to confuse the guys as to why all the girls were posting their colors.)
Well here was the response from a few guys I've seen today:
URGENT! FACEBOOK VIRUS ALERT. An email recently went out to women asking them to post the color of their bra. THIS IS A VIRUS.To fix it, you must remove your bra, then go to Settings>Enable Webcam> Record Movie. Please repost to your status and let all of your friends know.

I'm not usually the confrontational type either, I try to use humor to defuse situations. The whole time I was weighing in my mind whether I should say something like "You know, maybe next time you'll do what I say" in the presence of the nurse. Wisely I didn't. This was the same hospital we were going to have the kid in, so not a good idea.
I fully appreciate the pregnant woman being the only thing that matters at the hospital, but I don't like to be thought of as a typical Law and Order or Lifetime Movie of the Week character.

Isn't the best, easiest, and most effective method to insure no "profile" terrorists is issued a visa to enter the US, even for a visit? Sure that will mean "harassing" legitimate travelers who are coming here for perfectly reasonable and legal reasons.
But, it:
1. Allows for a much more thorough and thoughtful "screening." 2. Keeps potential terrorists away from the airport in the first place. 3. Intrudes less on the thousands and thousands of travelers who have no ill intentions. 4. Allows those legitimate travelers time to prepare to face tighter visa restrictions. 5. You're mainly ticking off non-Americans and frankly, who cares. 6. Keeps the TSA and other authorities at the airport as a last line of defense, not the main line of defense.
Is it perfect, no, I'm sure there are ways to circumvent even this type of crackdown. But, coming here is a privilege and if someone wants to do so, they should be prepared to go through some extra legwork for the opportunity. If not, stay at home.
Think of the billions we're spending on TSA and ask yourself, wouldn't a better investment of that money be spending on beefing up the visa approval process overseas? Keep terrorists as far away from boarding a flight in the first place as possible.

The pattymelt is awaiting company or a visit from a friend.
I have a package of Antelope/Wagyu burgers that I was planning on using. They are packed in 3's and I would have had to commit to burgers for a couple of days once I defrost them...
unless I can lure some cute lass here to make pattymelts for.
Also, I wanted to substitute Shallot Rings for Sautéd Onions and I only had one tiny shallot
. (I do this for Cheese Steaks and the results are pretty ridiculous.)

I think the lowest temp I've seen this Winter is 15.
The big deal is number of hours below freezing. We dropped below 32 around dark yesterday. Won't cross that line going the other way until Sunday.
We haven't seen a temp in the 40's since sometime last week.

We had an amnio (my wife was high risk due to an auto-immune condition) and the doc swabbed on a little iodine, pulled out a damn sewing-needle sized thing and, with no anesthsetic or further ado, shoved it right into her huge belly. Her eyes got as big as dinner plates and she just had time to say "Whoa..".
I've falled from great heights, been shot at, electrocuted on several occasions and been stomped on by a damn Santa Gertrudis bull the size of a tank, but I have never been as scared as when he was poking that huge damn thing into my poor wife without any ado and we both could see our little baby dodging it on the sonogram.

The left will fight, and fight, and fight, but the sand is washing away from beneath them. Heck, even in movies made by hip ex-stripper directors (Juno) the oh-so-hip girl has the baby.
This is a case where the Alinsky tactic smacks the liberals square in the gut: make the enemy abide by his own rulebook, and libs keep going on about the sanctity of life whenever snail darters or serial killers are in peril.

I'm not taking any meds now, and haven't taken any since september or october. I was diagnosed with a type of connective tissue disease several years ago, but they never gave me anything more than 10mg a prednisone (a baby dose) and I stopped taking that almost a year ago and everything is still fine. I have my first docs appointment with a normal doc at the end of the month, and I don't think I'll need a high-risk OB (at least I hope I don't because the nearest major hospital with a high-risk doc is over an hour away).

It is insanely good with Duck Breast! Try it in a Crepe with some Duck (smoked!) and Robiola or Taleggio cheese.
Cheese is really restricted right now (although we had a tiny bit of crumbled blue in the duck salad yesterday) 'cause of Mr. Y-not's diet. But if/when his glucose comes down - or for some special occasion - I'll check those out.
I cut an imposing figure in the local Hippymart (WholeFoodsType Store).
We have a Trader Joe's here (well, several), but I just don't "get" it. Their produce is not particularly imaginative (no Swiss chard, for example) and it's all pre-packaged. I guess the appeal is that it's fresh food packaged for busy people who don't cook or something.
Obama has ruined arugula for me. Not that I ever had it a lot before, but now I see his ugly mug in every leaf. So yesterday I just closed my eyes!
The other hippymart nearby is called Sprouts. Their produce is good and you can get bulk dry goods (like bulgur), but I'm put off by the aisle after aisle of bottled nutritional supplements. Call me crazy but pills just don't scream "health food" to me.

Heh.
Liz..
An economics professor recently estimated that Tiger Woods' marital problems have had a whopping $12 billion stock market impact. This bizarre intersection of personal woes and global finance is all about branding. Woods had been the public face of a wide range of products and services. His image of focus, grace under pressure, and peerless performance resonated far beyond sports. It didn't hurt, too, that golf is the pastime of choice of the corporate set. So Woods added value, all of which drained away -- with interest -- over the past weeks.
The biggest corporate victim was consulting giant Accenture, which had made Woods the entire face of its organization. Woods' image equaled Accenture's image, so the company was forced to perform an emergency image-ectomy. And that's where baby names come in.
Naming a child after a living celebrity is risky business. The problem is that the name's cultural meaning isn't yet settled. Just as Tiger Woods "means" something different in our society than he did a year ago, the meaning of celebrity's name can shift unpredictably over time.
(Don't believe the breathless media accounts of a flood of baby Baracks! hehe)

If you had ever spent two days in mid December in the Norfolk harbor on the USS George Washington waiting for the winds to die down enough to dock you, your opinion of that movie would be quite a bit different. Some smartass thought that it would be a perfect 24/7 movie to play until we managed to make it pierside.

If I had a way to hang myself from the ceiling by my left ankle, I think I would die of pleasure. I have found that some core exercises and stretching done with the aid of an excercise ball help a lot. But when that hip joint loads up with gas, it just miserable until it releases the pressure.
You need a good 1/2 hour of elbow in your upper hip joint/lower back with some targeted massage over your left glute, hip bone and down your left thigh.
Next to back pain, this can be the worst kind of discomfort.

Just throwing this out there, I don't really care, nor do I think it was fair. Some years ago the Lions were doing the replace the coach thing. They fired their coach and IIRC they hired Mariucci. The powers that be got angry because no black men were even considered for the job. The Lions pledged to interview suitable black candidates from that day forward and the issue was diffused. Fast forward to now and the skins fired their coach, hired Shanahan, and not a word was said about it. Do they have short memories, selective persecution, or what? Yes, I know the Lions still suck!!

Yep...
Seattle must interview at least one minority candidate before hiring a new head coach, according to NFL hiring protocols. The Seahawks requested to interview Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, who is African-American. There were conflicting reports Friday on whether he would choose to interview for the position.Posted by: Editor at January 08, 2010 09:06 PM (YX6i/)

sham interview to one of Zorn's black assistants, then went ahead and
cleaned house for Shanahan.

Yup. And, if I remember right -- they actually interviewed the guy before the last game, then pretty much set up everything with Shanahan, but to actually satsify the Rooney Rule, had to re-interview the guy again after the season officially ended. If I were that position coach I would have told them to f#@& off.
What a joke!

--Frazier should be good enough to do it on his own merits. I'm torn about the rule, since sometimes good coaches may not interview well, and at the very leaset it gives them practice at it. Still, if there's not good faith in both directions, I am not sure whether it even gains them any real practice.

Although there are qualified black candidates out there, this rule is pretty much a stick in the eye to any minority who may interview for a head coach position. Most team owners already have a new coach in mind before they fire the old one anyway.

I can't read hearts, but I would hope that the success or failure of coaches speaks more to any owner more than skin color. With a critical mass of black assistants now built up, there should not be a problem finding one who is due for a shot.

I mentiond Robinson Crusoe On Mars earlier. Just looked it up on Rotten Tomatoes. It pulled a 91% rating! Wow! I always thought others considered it crap.
I looked it up because it seemed like it had to be rated better than I thought. I was just watching the spaceships attacking Friday as he ran away from the slave camp. Inadvertent great effect. The way the ships sound, and the way they move. They flit around like dragonflies. It was freaky when I was a kid, and it's freaky now.

Okay, here's a question for some of you older Morons: I remember watching a Western movie in the 70's on TV about two buddies, one white, the other black, who used to go around the Antibellum South and sell the black friend to slave-owners, then the white friend would free him and they'd run the scam again somewhere else. Of course, what happens is the white friend is prevented from freeing the black friend and he finds out what it's like to be a real slave--whippings, hanging, hobblings, etc.
Now, I must've seen this movie about 4 times (this was before video, ya young punks!) although it must've been broadcast at least twice a year for about 10 years, but I can't for the life of me remember who was in it, or what it was called! Can any of you film freaks help me here?
Thanks in advance...
You can go back to acting like you can hold your liquor and occaisionally get laid.

If you don't see me here on the ONT tomorrow night, I probably ate my gun.

I don't know what just happened, but I just started a game to cruise around and admire the scenery, and my guy started in a wheelchair, near death, with a slew of permanent injuries, and now he's hacking networks without my having told him to. What on earth is going on?"
As far as bugs go, that one is a doozy.

When I was moviong up to Saratoga Springs, NY I heard endless litanies about how I was going to have problems driving in the snow and ice.
I never had a single problem. In fact the only people I saw that had problems were the locals.
The fact is there are stupid drivers in the North and in the South. The biggest difference between the North and the South in driving is the ability of the local government to deal with snow and ice removal.
In the North they spend huge suns of money for snow plows and salt spredding. Not so in the South. What they do down here is call out the road scrapers that are used for dirt roads. That turns a snow covered road into a a packed ice road. They manually spread sand on black ice which provides about zero good.
Most intelligent people realize that the roads are bad and drive accordingly. However there are always idiots.

Fox had their in-house security expert on there a few minutes ago talking about the failures of out security at the airports.
He kept talking about the stupidity of putting in these whole-body scanners to take porno shots of innocent people because we would not "profile" for the real people doing the bad shit.
What jacks my jaws is you NEVER here any of these so-called experts discuss the ONLY way we will ever stop this shit. That is to go after the nation states that support and finance these goons.
Until you make it extreemly painful for the places like Iran and Syria to support terrorists we will continue to have terrorists.
My feeling woould be each time a terrorist does something like this we find "best evidence" and take out a city in the country concerned. Preferrably the city that has their leadership.

Actually,
Until you make it extreemly painful for the places like Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Syria to support terrorists we will continue to have terrorists.
Most of what gets exported to the West has "Made in Saudi Arabia" stamped on it at some point in the process. They've got the money, you know.

My intent was not to limit the list to Iran and Syria, that is why I used the term "like". But, there is a difference bwteen Iran, Syria, and Saudi Arabia. The body of "public evidence" for Saudi Arabia is that the terrorists from there are not supported by the State, whereas Syria and Iran make terrorism public policy.
I think that when a country has active terroism support by private interests though they should be forced to take action to combat those private interests. Then if they do not we can take action against thjose proivate interests ourselves.
There is precedence for that. When Panco Villa crossed the border to attack U.S. towns we dispatched the military in an expidition against him into Mexico. A few cruiise missles launced at the Madrassas in Saudia Arabia may be required if they will do nothing.

If we built more nuclear power plants and thereby greatly reduced our dependence on Middle Eastern countries for oil, seems to me that would reduce frictions and spare everybody a lot of grief. But I could be wrong.
BTW, This windmill idea is loony. It just puts money in the pocket of the environmentalist people who own the company that makes those goofy windmills, and guess what? That company and its owners and its lobbyists are huge financial contributors to the Democrats. No surprise there. Greed is good.

Most ppl miss that subtle distinction.
Agreed we need to put the hurt on those who give financial, logistical and technical support to radical Islam as well as those who support the the spread of it, meaning key players in countries like Syria & Iran as well as Madrassas in Saudi Arabia. We definitely need to start doing something new/different and that sounds like as good a strategy as any that's been offered as yet.

"That company and its owners and its lobbyists are huge financial contributors to the Democrats."
When all is said and done, AGW may be remembered most for all the felons it produces. I can't begin to imagine the illicit web of interconnected green/Dem moneymen that exists. I'm sure some of our most prominent "leaders" are personally involved in the largest of the scams.
We're not quite there yet, but a couple more scandals (something like 7.8 billion dirty dollars in one crooked Euro carbon scheme) and somebody serious is gong to start an investigation here in the U.S.
At least that's what I'm hoping.

Your logic eludes me. I fail to see the connection.
Think about this: With respect to the terrorists, the manner in which Democrats address that issue goes to the crux of that issue. Their screwy mindets won't allow them to address that issue rationally; cases in point are too tedious and too numerous to list here.
Democrats are a coalition of the mentally ill and the mentally retarded.

Building Nuclear Power Plants is a good idea but it would do little to reduce the use of middle eastern oil. We generate very little electricity from oil these days. (Truth in advertising I retired after 30 years in the nuclear buiness)
The use of windmills for large amounts of generation is also stupid for a large number of reasons:
1. Too expensive
2. Very few locations where it is feasible
3. On a large scale it simply will not work because the output varies greatly. If we actually ever did put out these things on a large scale it would destablize the grid.

It's like something out of a half-assed dystopian novel.
Private terrorist chasers who go after all the nasty right-wingers (or anyone else who happens to piss off the Lefty establishment). No doubt it was some graduate student's wet dream made reality when he finally got his big Government job.

It really is obscene. The only possible reason for setting up such an agency in the way this one is set up is to allow the Left to publicly fund a private political police force with Government money while exempting it from the rule of law governing disclosure and access.
It's an evil tactic being used by evil people for evil ends. Here's hoping someone in the UK stands up and does something about it. They're well beyond the slippery slope stage already, and they need to rapidly start climbing out of the hole.

Friends are considering buying their season tickets. Been in their family for eons. However to buy the right to buy the tickets is ridiculously exorbitant. Then the tickets have gone up a lot. This could very well encourage some to buy a really great big screen, some lazy boy loungers and a surround sound system and to buy the season ticket option on their cable and just stay at home. That will definitely impact the stadiums as they are paying for new stadiums with the tickets to some extent.
