Overnight Open Thread - Turkey Day Edition (Mætenloch)
— Open Blog

Happy Thanksgiving all. I hope everyone had some good food and good times with friends and family. Personally I've always found that I could love my family a lot more along with some rum and coke. Whiskey if certain branches show up. And of course the same is probably true of your fellow ONT sub-morons.

Remembering the Great Cincinnati Turkey Drop
Oh the humanity. A day that will live in infamy at the Pinedale shopping center. And when I saw this as kid, it was my first inkling that well maybe turkeys can't fly. You can see more here and the entire episode here.

Tranny Watch: Dude Looks Like a Lady(boy)
Take the spot the tranny challenge. It's harder than it looks which is why you can never be too careful in Thailand.

Royal Navy Now Giving Sailors PSPs
For 'studying'. I actually have a PSP and reading docs on it would be kinda awkward at best - a cheap netbook would be a much better solution.

Georgia high court rules lawn mower isn't a motor vehicle
So does this mean you can't get an MWI in GA?

Breeders Now Raising Poison-free Blowfish
Friends that have tried fugu tell me that it's just ehh without that extra frisson of flavor from cheating death.

40 #34...I don't understand why the smartest politician evah made the announcement he's going to Hopenchangen before more of this fleshes out.

What if more hoaxie stuff comes to light in the next week?  What if scientists start resigning and walking back some of their claims.  Then B to the O has to make a decision, stay on a sinking ship or change his plans and look like he acted hastily in the face of obvious evidence he shouldn't go.

Even if he thinks Climategate will blow over, he could have held out his announcement for another week or so and let things play out more and risked much less.

He really has poor political judgment.

My older brother was in Bangkok from 71-74. I got there once in the 90's. I was also on the last TDY to Clark AB, PI in 91. Shortly after I left, Mt. Pinatubo blew up and Clark was no more. I shed a lot of tears over that. Got a couple pics of the mountain steaming but nobody thought it would blow like that.

Never made it to Subic. By the time I started going to Clark, the NPA was killing Americans and we weren't even allowed to go to Camp John Hay because we were TDY from Korea. A close friend of mine from those days wants me to go back there with him for a vacation but I'm married and he married again recently. He lived there for four years. 168 Oh, and copying this over from the Thanksgiving thread, 'cause you deserve the end of the story:

My Thanksgiving dinner for orphans, misfits and stranded foreigners turned out far better than I had feared. All the side dishes were cooked and set aside for reheating and the turkey was in the oven before noon when the kids returned from the parade. Sally, a gregarious Welsh lass, made a point of drawing everybody out while they spectated, so they all knew one another better than I knew any of them and even the painfully bashful Yu Lo was speaking full sentences loudly enough to be heard. Pritee played three songs on my guitar (quite well) and everyone sang along (not quite so well).  We watched the tail end of a dog show and snatches of football game. Young Ronnie was able to explain both the dog judging and American football. He also observed that the eight black T-shirts and five pairs of khakis on my shelf are arranged in order of fadedness. I perhaps need to broaden my wardrove choices a bit.

We drank, talked, got hungry and had a fine feast at 4, The gravy was the only element ever in doubt and a surreptitious can of Campbell's made it thicken up properly. I wisely made too little of everything, leaving very little leftovers after everyone took a dish of turkey for sandwiches back to the dorm. Hosting tip: Slices of bread in a sandwich baggy and foil packets of condiments make the doggy bag complete.

Two handsome and noble brothers took leave from their parents in Queens for a few hours to share dessert, flirt with our women and get the inebriated underclassmen safely back to their dorms. As a bonus to me, they offered to give a lavishly embellished report of the festivities to the bitch who maligned my guests on Monday.

Lesson of the day? There's no point looking for holiday spirit out there, You need to make your own.

Moronettes, I wore the most comfortable dress today. I’d bought it on sale at Nordstrom in September but never figured out an appropriate occasion to wear it so today I thought what the heck. It is one of those long dresses like the chicks in the 70s wore, I think they called them ‘maxi-dresses’ which I always thought sounded stupid because of the whole ‘maxi-pads’ thing. This one wasn’t fugly like some of those 70s styles though, it was a simple long black dress with a very low cut scoop neck.

213 Sorry PGIS and Eliz -- I had fallen asleep temporarily and the thread seemed kind of dead minus the tranny talk. And besides, this posting on iPhone with no wifi capability sucks majorly. I'm glad everything worked out with your mom, Eliz. She sounded like she was on her best behaviour. She must have really taken a shine to Mortis. And PGIS - tomorrow I hit some stores in the afternoon. I gave an appointment in the morning. I also think I may have generated some business for myself. One of the women who shared the car with me is a judge who is coming out with a new book in January and she needs an outside publicist. -- separate from her publishing house. So I was pretty psyched.

LOL, thanks, PGiS. If only it really worked that way! But we're having dinner with my other aunt on Sunday and there's rumours of a turkey for that one. I asked my mom to make mashed taters and kept telling her hers are the best (because they are) so hopefully she'll make them. She puts in cream cheese and sour cream and makes the taters a little chunky. They're absolutely perfect.

384 GA court rules lawn mower is not a car. Finally, common sense has prevailed. Now, does this mean that all those people who had DUI convictions for driving a lawn mower while drunk will have those convictions overturned?

And how about those convicted of riding a horse drunk?  Will it take a court to rule that a horse is not a car?

386 Gau @ 337: I have Streets of Fire running on repeat in the background. Walter Hill, Deborah Van Valkenburgh and a cameo by Lynne Thigpen, which ought to satisfy any Warriors fan. The songs are great, Michael Pare sounds exactly like Stallone in Rocky, and the climactic duel is fought with nine-pound sledgehammers. What's not to like?

Is it just me, or is Diane Lane way hotter now, 25 years later, than she was then?

BTW, I just realized that we have a month left to celebrate the 25th anniversary of 1984,

388 GA court rules lawn mower is not a car.

I have a drunkard friend up in NY who did a year in state because of repeated felony DUI's.  When he came out he realized he wanted to drink more than he wanted to drive, and he didn't want to go back to prison, so he gave up the D/L and hasn't be in a driver seat since.

He does however tool around all over town on a lawnmower ;->

Posted by: Purple Avenger at November 27, 2009 07:34 AM (1Ha1I)

389 He does however tool around all over town on a lawnmower ;->

We here have what they call "DUI bikes".  These are the modern version of the moped with less than 45 hp. Will do a max of about 40 mph with the average weight person on it.

You can not license them and you do not have to have a DL to drive them. Legally they fall under the category of "motorized bicycle".

The DUI people drive them with impunity around town, and in some cases, out on the highway.

I'm sure that sooner or later MADD will stick their snotty noses into it if they haven't already.
