The Latest on Missing Flight MH370

So after examining all the data collected so far authorities are now fairly convinced that the plane was deliberately diverted due to human action. This is based on a couple of details:

  • The fact that the ACARS system was logged off (versus just being cut off) over 10 minutes before the transponder cut off (which happened right at an ATC handoff).
  • Military primary radar returns showing a plane heading west over Malaysia shortly later and making course adjustments and possible drastic altitude changes.
  • Satellite hand-shake pings going on for another 7+ hours

None of these are conclusive but the combination is extremely difficult to explain by any other scenario than a takeover by someone.

So based on the strength/timing of the last satellite ping, the satellite footprint, and remaining fuel authorities believe the plane went down somewhere near the two arcs shown below in red. People are referring to the two possible arcs as the Terrorism route (Northern arc) and the Suicide route (Southern arc).  [Note that the arcs represent the possible location of the plane at the last ping - not the flight path up to that point.]

The Northern arc is problematical due to the mountainous terrain and large amount of radar systems along all the national borders. So far no country in that area has reported any contacts that might match the plane's flight. And on the Southern arc there are very few radar installations except for Australia's JORN OTHR system which may not have been active during the flight.

The Dumbest John Kerry Statement Ever

Which is a tough call given his long record of arrogant wrongness and his short tenure thus far as secretary of state.

Kerry is never merely convinced of things, he's "absolutely convinced." And almost invariably, he's absolutely wrong.

Kerry is now absolutely convinced that "it's a mistake" for Israeli leaders "again and again" to raise the PLO's refusal to recognize Israel as a Jewish state "as the critical decider of their attitude toward the possibility of a [Palestinian] state and peace." Apparently, Kerry believes that Israel should consider as its peace partner an entity that doesn't accept its right to exist as it is fundamentally constituted.

So in Kerry Reality it's perfectly plausible to be able to make peace with people who won't recognize your right to exist.

Gays vs Blacks in DC along with a few other fault lines.

In case you guys don't follow this, Catania is the openly gay councilman, who's been an at-large member of the Council since 1998. He used to be a Republican, but since 2004 he's been an independent.

...Second, and much more importantly, Catania's run explodes the entire DC political equilibrium. White liberals are going to support Catania, while urban blacks are going to support Mayor Gray (or whichever black person gets the Dem nomination).

Architect Sentenced to Year in Jail For Firefighter's Death

An architect was sentenced to a year in LA county jail after pleading no contest to the manslaughter of a firefighter who died while trying to contain a fire in a home the architect had designed for himself.

The case dates back to 2011, when a fire broke out in the Hollywood Hills home of a German architect named Gerhard Becker, who designed the building himself. The fire began in one of four fireplaces that had been manufactured for outdoor use but hidden within the houses itself; this means they were in clear violation of local building codes.

The flames then melted a water pipe, which leaked thousands of gallons of water into a ceiling above the heads of the firefighters battling the fire. When the ceiling collapsed, it crushed 61-year-old Glenn Allen, who died the next day of his injuries

Becker allegedly had the fireplaces installed after the mansion had cleared its inspection, writing, "I want this to be installed after the final inspection so we don't have any final delays by the inspector."

And he was less than remorseful after the fire:

Becker was interviewed by fire investigators, but two months after they last spoke to him, he broke the lease on his home, sold two vehicles and flew to Switzerland and then Spain, where he began to build another luxury home. There he set up construction companies in the name of his wife, a yoga instructor, investigators said.

BBC Censors the Word 'Jesus' From Song Lyrics

BBC management banned singer Eliza Doolittle from using the word 'Jesus' in a performance of her love song 'Walking on Water'. She was forced to change the lyric from "Sometimes I wish I was Jesus, I'd get my Air Max on and run across the sea for you" to "Sometimes I wish it was easy..." when she appeared on the Chris Evans Breakfast Show on Radio 2.

...This is the second instance of politically correct censorship on the BBC in just one week. On Thursday it was also forced to defend a decision to postpone a discussion on BBC Three's 'Free Speech' show about being gay and Muslim.

6 ... and, speaking of the northern arc for MH370, a slight turn to Sri Lanka is curiously not included. India may have virtually no radars along its coastline, as their threats are Pakistan and China ... India might be unable to see more than 20 miles out to sea ... ... and Sri Lanka ... perhaps some radio negotiations took place on the ground, to prevent any bloodshed.

Isaac Yeffet, who served as head of global security for Israel’s national carrier in the 1980s and now works as an aviation security consultant in New Jersey, said investigators were correct in honing in on the two fake-passport carrying Iranian passengers on the doomed flight, and they have wasted valuable time by exploring other leads. “What happened to this aircraft, nobody knows. 55 As I understand it, the arc describes by points on the surface (or just above it) equidistant from the satellite with the distance determined by the transit time for the message to the satellite and back at the time of the last message.  the plane could have been be anywhere along that arc at the time of the last message (taking into account range and fuel loaded at KL).  It doesn't mean the plane is thought to have flown along that arc.  It was somewhere along that arc at one moment in time -- the time of the last message.

74 Some quibbles with that Buzzfeed list: 1. Fedoras Fedoras, like many hats, are perfectly fine for men over forty. Further, people aren't wearing enough hatsÂ… 6. Capes Only men over should wear capes, and then only if they are manly enough to do it. 9. Overalls. Perfectly legitimate if you are doing actual work where having overalls makes sense. Clearly this list is aimed at hipsters who can't wear hats or overalls without terminal "irony". 12. Skull jewelry when you are not in fact a sorcerer. Why not? Sorcerers shouldn't have a monopoly on that! It's discrimination! 13. Duster coats. If the weather or environment warrants a duster, then a duster one should wear. It is only stupid if you are, again, a hipster. Also, it is the under-30 crowd who usually can't get away with wearing one. 15. Free T-shirts from your bank. What's wrong with wearing free stuff? Not everyone can pay for an expensive hipster get-out that is intentionally made to look like something that is much cheaper. Everything else is what no one ought to be wearing regardless of their age.

93 83 61 A pilot on Fox says an electrical fire could explain much of this plane story. Meh. Maybe. Posted by: eman at March 16, 2014 10:55 PM (AO9UG) Not a chance. I think we can pretty much rule out any kind of accident at this point. If the information I've heard is true, the plane made several changes of direction and altitude after the transponder was turned off. It wasn't just flying on its own with the crew incapacitated. Posted by: rickl at March 16, 2014 11:00 PM (sdi6R) The pilot claimed autopilot will do that as it tries to maintain constant speed. It sounded kinda iffy to me.

I dunno - Bogart wore a fedora pretty darn well - partly because he wasn't wearing one "ironically." It was just an everyday part of most men's wardrobe in those days. My dad was still wearing hats in the 70's - he didn't care if they were "in" or not.

I still remember when the church we attended had these metal clip thingees on the pews, so men could hang their hats during mass, rather than putting them next to their seat and taking up space.

191

Thought exercise.

1.  Our military boffins know exactly where the plane landed, and is, at this very moment.  Fact is, they knew about week ago.

2.  Rather than trumpet that fact, they're helping to feed the confusion as to it's fate.

3.  Because, of course, they don't want the bad guys to know that we know, or what we know.

4.  Buying time of course, for a proper, intense and highly detailed gathering of intel to occur, especially as gathered by highly talented parachuting n' swimming men in green faces, who silently go where they're not invited.

5.  Working up, one hopes, to the development of a highly effective insertion, strike and recovery package to recover any (hopeful) plane survivors intact.  And, to recapture or destroy the plane.

6.  And, to very seriously capture the persons involved in the terror mission, so as to fully *ahem   "debrief" them, in the most socially incorrect ways possible.

7.  Ending, hopefully, with a noticeable number of strikes higher up the terrorist food chain, even extending into certain islamo-governments.

Yeah, just a thought process......  but, it's logical, and I would hope that something like this would be in process.  If, that is, the plane isn't just simply a new reef on the bottom of the ocean.

244 Miss Tammy, please try to remember that, for quite a few of us, those "mushy girly" feelings get displayed as anger and annoyance. The madder he gets, the more it's an indication that he misses you, loves you and wants you with him. I would, honestly, be pretty livid if my wife was voluntarily gone for any length of time. Husbands and wives belong together. But the same goes for him. Unless he's working those hours to support the two of you, which is doesn't sound like, then there's no reason that he can't meet some of the things you're talking about. Not to mention that working hours like your describing will be detrimental to his health. Eating together, taking days off, coming to be at reasonable hoursÂ…those are things that benefit you both emotionally and physically.

270 Besides being Green Beer Day, tomorrow is also the 18th anniversary of the day I first put a page up on the web. My goodness, how our little web has grown in 18 years. And so has my website. I didn't know what to do with a website at first. I started by advertising (semi-seriously) my 25c print mini-comics. Then I put a "sample" comic up. Then the light bulb went off. Unlike my blurry, xerographed, monochrome print mini-comics, the cartoon on-line was sharp (as much as monitors of the day permitted), and wow! sixteen whole colors! Four times as many as print! It took me a few days, but that's when I realized Print is Finally Dead. I've been loading comics, opinions (of course), VR worlds, songs, noises, vids, and all kinds of nonsense and drivel onto my website ever since. At first I didn't have a domain; my site was on that spin-off of CompuServe known as Sprynet. Something like home.sprynet.com/~mindful, IIRC. Sprynet got eaten by MindSpring. MindSpring got eaten by EarthLink. The Sprynet site was good all the way through, until the EarthLink account eventually got dropped. By that time, the site was just pages that forwarded to the domain. But, History lost. I can't even remember getting the domain name, but apparently I did. I'd published the mini-comics for years under "Little Mindless Publications," but the website became "Mindful Webworks," just to go upscale. I was getting old. Now, there's about five hundred webworks under several topical albums, nearly seven hundred random "daily doodles," and just for fun a giant 'blog heap o' links' that I maintained for many years and lately have been trying to revive... (Continued... so I have TWO tl;dr posts not just one!)

277 (Continuing. I promise I'll never do this again. Until the 20th anniversary, anyway. I should live so long.) A couple of years ago, I moved from "static" to "dynamic" website. I've spent the past several years trying to figure out how that works, and how to make my site take best advantage of it. Among other things, with a dynamic site, I can finally have comments mostly without spam. I've opened a few pages to comments, and actually received one. (Imagine, 18 years on the web and 1 comment. Why I call it the web's best-kept secret.) I haven't opened up most pages to comments, though. The site was originally just my portfolio of eclectic nonsense. The webpage is a frame. You don't hang a work of art on the wall, carefully framed and lighted, then leave a Sharpie hanging on a string so folks can write their opinions on the wall all around the art. But... but... people like interactivity. Sure, there's trolls, and spam, and h8rs, but look at the community here (noting the several sentries armed with banhammers). Or, take an "art" site I really like, http://braveandboldlost.blogspot.com/ - all the comments discuss the guy's work and make suggestions and it's nice. So, I've wondered about opening up my site more for comments. I watched a lot, and did a little, of SysOp back on CompuServe, and from BBS to Blogs, it can get weird. But it's a new and interactive age. I might do more comments-opening on pages. But I'd hate to get into that, then find it such a burden or time-consuming away from content production, or, worst of all, off-topic or flamewars that lead to closing out comments altogether. Well, that's quite a ramble, and I'd be ashamed except, I'm too tired to care, you didn't read it anyway, and anyway, I haven't been commenting much lately as I've been so busy tinkering with the website behind-the-scenes stuff, trying to give it a bit of housecleaning and facelift for the anniversary. So, I earned one tl;dr, maybe, huh? Back to y'all someday when time permits. Meanwhile, [salute!] to the ONT folk, and.. ...my goodness that was quite a hidden kitteh!

301 Has anybody considered a frozen lake as a possible landing point for the missing 777? I happen to think it's final destination was Davy Jones' locker, but to throw a bone to those who think some nefarious intrigues are afoot: there's no way it could land somewhere from which it could refuel, dispose of the passengers, and get airborne again without detection. It could probably land on an improvised strip, but wouldn't be able to take off again. Could it have gone far enough north to find ice thick enough to land on on a lake big enough that it could take off again? I remember hearing about a B-17 landing on Lake Minnetonka once during WWII and I don't see why it wouldn't be possible as long as the ice was thick enough and there wasn't a lot of snow on top.

316 No I believe the satellite is able to determine the angle of the signal to the satellite so they're pretty sure it was close to the arcs at the last ping.

Posted by: Mætenloch at March 16, 2014 11:29 PM (XkotV)

The satellite computes the round-trip travel time for the ping from sat-to-plane and back again. Knowing that radio waves travel at the speed of light, that small time delay can be transformed into a distance. Those arcs represent the places on the Earth's surface exactly that distance from the satellite. If there were two satellites pinging the plane, you'd have two arcs, and their intersection would give you a fix.

GPS works the same way, but in reverse. Your GPS unit receives signals from multiple low-altitude satellites, whose positions are known, and the signals are time-stamped. The GPS unit says to itself, "Hmmm...I'm X miles from satellite A's location (at the time of the fix), Y miles from satellite B, and Z miles from satellite C. Those three vectors can intersect at only one point in three-space, I must be on the top floor of the parking structure at Fourth and Broadway.

327 I actually just came up with a morbid speculation as to why the pilot (1) went up to 45,000 feet, (2) put it into a power dive to less than 20,000 feet, and (3) then set off on his intended heading.

So, he was at normal cruising altitude and disabled the safety masks in the cabin, then cracked the pressure. As the pressure faded away in the cabin and the masks did not deploy, people would have come forward to pound on the (locked) cockpit door, and he could hear them pounding.....so he climbed until the pounding stopped.

Then he pressurized the cabin again and tried to open the door, and found that it was blocked -- by all the bodies of the asphyxiated crew/passengers, so he had to do the power dive to "float" [zero-g] all the bodies away from the cockpit door so he could go to the lav.

But, gimmie about 30 minutes, and I'll go waterboard the local shop-n-rob storekeeper (no, not the one with the "dot", silly!), and he can do the honors.

Well the convergence of leaks has consistently been towards a stolen plane (and probably by the original pilot), so unless *everyone* is lying, that much is at least likely. Which is certainly possible.

You might want to check what latitudes we're dealing with and whether SE Asia had as cold a winter as we did-I'm not sure if there even are any frozen lakes in the area indicated.

If this was a state sponsored operation, then all the plane has to do is reach friendly territory (to the cause) and its landing wouldn't be reported to anyone in the broader world.

353 The satellite computes the round-trip travel time for the ping from sat-to-plane and back again. Knowing that radio waves travel at the speed of light, that small time delay can be transformed into a distance. Those arcs represent the places on the Earth's surface exactly that distance from the satellite. If there were two satellites pinging the plane, you'd have two arcs, and their intersection would give you a fix.

Well that would be more like space radar.

My understanding is that the plane occasionally sends a message up to the satellite and then the satellite sends back a response. This lets the plane know that it is in contact with the satellite and the satellite know the approximate angle to the plane so it can direct its signal more efficiently. I'm assuming the satellite uses a phased array antenna so the timing comes from the relative phase differences between the signals at different parts of the array.

They aren't courses. They are the positions the plane could have been in at the time of the last ping (which would be an entire circle) constrained at the ends by the distance the plane could have travelled from the point where contact was lost, and in the middle by the presumption it didn't just fly in circles. It probably wasn't at the very end if it was zigzagging about, but it probably also wasn't near the center as the post disappearance pilot (who may be the original) presumably flew for that period of time for some reason.

Then you lay down the ultimatum--the shit-or-get-off-the-pot stuff. Thor, do you or do you not give a damn about my need to connect, daily, in a meaningful manner? Yes, or no, and are you willing to show it?

His answer will make your determination.

Relationships all boil down to whether or not you can handle this particular set of bullshit events and actions, in sight of whatever perceived advantage you gain by staying. I will tolerate a great deal of dirty laundry, occasional bad breath after a night of carousing, having to cook every damned meal, and even running errands when his back is out, in exchange for being loved to my very core, protected with his life (if need be) and certain lifelong commitment.

But, it took the ultimatum to get him to agree to this setup. He could have me, 24/7/365 +/- 60 years, if he would give up booze and the other ladies. I did not ask him to change himself, since it is himself that I love very much, but only some of his choices. He said yes, and so did I, and we are very happy, indeed.

I looked it up recently -- Everest has been climbed without oxygen -- and that's 29000 feet and climbing a mountain to boot.....so, presumably, some people could go higher if all they were doing was panting. You/re right. Those aren't "courses". They are sets of possible positions for the aircraft at the time of the ping. The diagram is saying, "At the time of the last ping, this plane was at 23.xxxxxx thousand miles from that satellite. An imaginary sphere of that radius will intersect the surface of the Earth along the arc shown."

The plane probably never flew along that arc, but at the time of the ping, its course intersected the arc at some point.

right, the reason the arcs do not complete a circle is the plane did not have enough fuel to span the diameter of the circle.

The arcs are bisected by other satellite footprints that did not register the aircraft.  So that bite out of the middle is due to the trialling coverage from the easterly bird and the western terminus due to either polar region having no coverage or a northern hemisphere bird.

Those are just ideal intersection arcs for the 8.11 ping.  A lot of things could make that line very fuzzy:  Satellite and transceiver error, aircraft roll relative to the satellite, other interference, etc.  If the aircraft was banked to with west, the easterly bird could have missed the ping, rendering the un-joined arc meaningless.

The curved arcs are NOT the flight path. Apparently the satellite can determine the angle of the signal and the arcs represent the points on Earth that could have sent the signal at that angle minus the footprints of other satellites that didn't receive any signals as well as areas with good radar coverage where the plane wasn't seen.

The footprint of the satellite is clearly larger since it also received pings from the plane while it was traveling towards the arc from Malaysia.

If he is I would clarify the goal / time and negotiate everything after this immediate goal is achieved.

392 But they said there were 7 or 8 pings...'if' they were able to show distance, then the distance would have changed, unless it was following that exact curve.

Hard to believe that the plane would fly a course, through even 5 or more data points, that would be a constant arc from a single point (that being the Sat).

That graphic doesn't show any information from the earlier pings.

Yes, it would be useful to get the position arcs from the earlier pings but that information, while available to investigators, is not available to us.

397 "... there were 7 or 8 pings ..." The satellite in question is orbiting at about 22,300 miles, and so far, only data from this one satellite has been released. If the accuracy of the signal strength measurement is 1 part in 1000, then the plane's position was known to the nearest 22.3 miles, per ping. How far apart (in time) were the pings? Do they show a course? I'm suspect that MH370 has been on the ground for a few days, and that "hostage negotiations are taking place" ... maybe for real, maybe because the "host country" has realized that MH370 has severely pissed the Chinese ... who will be cutting balls off, real soon now.

399 Realizing that the arc shown on the map is the distance fom the sattelite for the final ping, if they were to utilize the same style data for the 'other' hourly pings - they might be able to determine 2 or 3 potential flight paths and minimize the area that they are searching

And presumably each of those earlier pings would also have an arc. The arc in the diagram is clearly labeled "arc of last contact at at 8:30 A.M.", meaning any point on that arc is possible location for the plane. The arc is a set of possible locations. As Jean says above, the gap in the middle may be due to the footprint of another satellite, which DID NOT ping the plane, intersecting, or maybe it is within the coverage area of the Malaysian ATC radar, and eliminated for that reason. I would like to see the arcs of the earlier pings, too. Assuming the plane kept to its nominal cruising speed, you could note the time between pings, convert to miles at that speed, and then try to fit a line segment of that length between the arcs. For each pair of arcs, you should get 2 solutions.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at March 16, 2014 09:00 PM (2w1g0)

401 The plane probably never flew along that arc, but at the time of the ping, its course intersected the arc at some point.>>

The part I don't get about the arc is why it is so large. If I know the time of the planes last position and the speed range of travel. Why can't they limit the arc since they also know the time of the ping?

Yeah, I get all that -- that's why I was thinking about the explanation....and that's where the idea idea that once everyone's ears started popping, the cabin crew and some passengers in first would start pounding on the cockpit door came from. But once they were at the door, they could keep pounding for longer than was survivable -- breath-hold diving records are in excess of 10 minutes. And, of course, it takes time to depressurize or repressurize a plane using standard systems (i.e. not blowing a hole in the side).

Which led to the grim scenario originally described. Cut the air supply and set the cabin for depressurization and go on like your simulator said you -- shit! They're pounding on the cockpit door! They're supposed to be quietly going into the final sleep, and -- that sounded like metal on metal! More pounding! The gauge says they're at the pressure equivalent of outside, but they're still at it! Climb!

Posted by: cthulhu at March 16, 2014 09:00 PM (T1005)

403 The arcs are bisected by other satellite footprints that did not register the aircraft. So that bite out of the middle is due to the trialling coverage from the easterly bird

Okay, that makes sense.

The point that I had originally made was that there was an earlier disclosure that the plane was settling into a standard route through airspace -- there is a network of preplanned routes that all airliners use (to see it, go to skyvector.com and head to a section of the map that is not particularly "busy"). With no transponder, the pilot could have selected a variety of such routes, but knowing that the route he was on intersected the arcs of each satellite ping one hour's cruising distance apart would make it pretty obvious pretty fast.....if we had all seven arcs. But we don't -- we only have the last one.

All the arc in the diagram conveys is the plane's possible position based on  its distance from the satellite. And as mentioned by others, this is limited in the middle by another satellite that would have pinged it if it had been there. The outer ends of the arc are, I assume, limited by the maximum distance the plane could have travelled in the 7+ hours between the disappearance and the last ping (this is a pretty large number).

It probably wasn't at either end at that time since it doesn't seem to have travelled in a straight line, and every course change (unknown to us) would reduce the length along the arc it could be from the point of disappearance

The arc covers thousands of miles. If I draw a line from last known contact point to locations on the arc the distances are wildly different. There is no way the arc needs to be that long. And travel after the ping has no connection to the arc. My point being there is a small portion of the arc that has meaning to the planes last approximate location.

There are several pieces of data not being made public.  Those previous arcs, which could with a simple time function illustrate if he was maintaining straight course and nominal airspeed.  The performance arcs of active search radars vs a 777 at the last known altitude, would be interesting to see.  The ACARS ground station VHF transponders locations and antenna footprints - to see if they were tickled.  Same with isolated, edge of network cell towers near the suspected flight paths.  The damn cargo manifest and specific fuel load - not "nothing dangerous" and "a little more then needed".

a. because flying an evasive flight path with random turns and back-tracking would in itself look suspicious, and cause any radar operators to alert

b. because if the pilot altered speed, direction, or altitude randomly, you couldn't really do the average speed calculation.

I'd say do the calculations once with the plane flying at max possible cruising speed, and again at say 2/3 normal speed, to allow for some evasive maneuvers. Those two calculations would set limits to your search area. Then I would look for known useable runways inside those limits, especially those that are in the hands of islamist-friendly governments or insurgencies, or that could be temporarily so occupied.

491 Tammy, I've no personal experience at all when it comes to marriage or even long term relationships but two things come to mind based solely on observation.

There is a sort of male menopause phenomenon that seems to have the symptoms you've listed. The men aren't consciously drawing away from their wives but throwing themselves at their work is often how they deal with it.

Alternatively, it could be pure straight-out fear of what the future holds. I have nothing myself, so nothing to lose and that creates an intense anxiety as I'm underemployed and worried about someday outliving all of the family that makes it possible for me to survive at all. But for anyone paying attention to sources besides the MSM things have to be pretty damn scary. You may officially have a very solid financial footing on paper but that could all go poof tomorrow if enough people suddenly are forced to acknowledge the rickety debt structure holding up the world today. If I was working regularly, especially if I was capable of earning in the six figures, I'd be terrified to stop out of concern that so much of what I supposedly have could be declared null and void overnight or seized by a flailing government seeking to keep the machine going just a little longer.

513 471 Tammy, listen to me. Husband over mother. He should be first. You need to be his wife, or you won't be anymore. Go live with him. Mom is not abandoned, she can follow. She's your excuse, not your reason. ----- Then again,Gothere's advice is good, too. Since I have now read that you were married 25 years before this, I'd say, as another poster did, that time will take care of this. If your mother isn't real bad off, and you can get other people to stay with her, then I think GoThere speaks wisdom. In any case, I'd be wary of any sort of ultimatum. I'm not a big believer of telling husbands what to do in their work life, either. (Married 36 years here.) Chances are good that if you're just supportive, he will probably decide to temper the workaholism on his own and sooner rather than later. Rather than talking him to death, I'd just make my needs and desires known (which you have). Then stay up and when he goes to sleep on the couch, no, you have him come to bed whatever the hour. When he wants a sandwich, you bring it along with yourself and your own sandwich, and voila, a meal together. That many years of marriage, seems like all this angst and discord just isnt worth it. Plus, you can't control everything. Jmo from 36 years married here. This too shall pass, even if you stop fighting it.

I guess the thing is we always managed to get some "us" time in. When we were younger I dragged her all over the place, so I think she had enough of her fill to just let me do my thing, plus her career started demanding some of her time too. It all works out.

Yeah. Of course there is a "safe maximum" and then what the plane would do if you firewall the throttles and go as fast as you can. And then there is the minimum cruise to maintain altitude, and/or slower over-the-ground speeds achieved by circling. I doubt a pilot wishing to "hide" in plain sight (so to speak) would wish to call attention to himself by flying the plane so far out of its normal envelope.

Works with "beloved husband" and "dragonslayer", too. The point is that evolution has pounded into guys over generations that they are expendable, so long as the cause was right: "Women and children first" and all that.

Well it depends, if you were up each other's ass for years then a little independence isn't actually a bad thing. Thor is probably right at the age where he knows he only has so much time left to build a good nest egg. Me and the wife never grew apart, and we are both very independent.

Go to skyvector.com, zoom out, go find the Philippines and zoom in until it fills your screen. Make sure you're on "World Hi". If you were flying around the Philippines and didn't want to be noticed, you'd be on one of those lines.

If you did want to be noticed, and wanted ATC to help you not run into someone midair, you'd be saying things like, "On A583 [zoom in until you can read the line markers] at 32000 feet, intending to turn at W17 toward Puerto Princesa at same altitude."

There'd be a constant stream of commercial planes in the designated air corridors, with only a few joyriders off in the boonies (and avoiding the hell out of corridors).

well, for that money you can have a recent american tele. The body on that Ibanez tele looks like a jenga game. I was never bowled over by the lawsuit guitars, because in reality they were trying to make guitars better than the american guitars were at the time, and those guitars were soooo fucking pitiful that even if a copy was made marginally better you still were pretty far off the mark overall.

In my mind, the thing to understand about guitars is that they are approaching a set of problems with an infinite set of solutions, so you have to 'grok' where they're coming from in order to evaluate them against the standards of what they are attempting.

Case in point -- LP's pioneered humbuckers to have a warm, rich, fat sound with little noise. They represent fretboard virtuosity because the fretboard is more spacious (wider) than other guitars, and they are meant to "ring" and sustain, through their use of pocketed and joined necks instead of bolt-ons and bodies of exotic woods. You can surpass an LP by making better pickups, cutting the noise, emphasizing the sustain, or making the sound richer or more variable.

Strats tend to have a thinner, "lead-ier" sound from their single-coil pickups (though they have more variety in-play from bridge to neck), be faster to finger (because their fingerboard is narrower) but less accurate, and are optimized towards more staccato phrasings than washes (bolt-on neck). They are also more bend-y. To be better than a Strat, you can have more versatile pickups, a faster neck, and a better tremolo.

That's not to say that you can't graft better sustain into a Strat, or thinner, "lead-ier" sound into an LP.....but that's not why you should have chosen that "style" of axe in the first place.

It gets more fun from there. Back in the day, if you had money to burn (like, maybe, you were a touring act with a recording contract) you'd have whole different amplification systems to go with your different axes for different sounds.

My ex-boss, the long-time guitar collector, recently converted most of his stuff to Line 6 Variaxes. Things have gotten to the point where the nuances of sound output can all be simulated reasonably-well using virtual pickups and virtual amps, and most of what matters is comfort in the hand. I think there's still a difference, but wouldn't bet on there being one in five years.

Yeah there is really no reason to get a copy anything, because there are just too many good real ones out there. That wasn't the case some years back, but it is today. Ok yeah, there are some guitars that are soooooo fucking epensive that a copy is the only thing one can get, but for the most part it don't pay. Sometimes you do find some cheap guitars that are absolute freaks of nature and you just can't pass them up. I have this one les paul copy, its called an SVK. I think it was a pair of American dudes who had them built overseas to their specs until gibson caught wind and put a stop to them. Its a set neck, made with really nice mahogany, incredible neck and fret job, and I needed it like a 3rd asshole because there are 5 real ones here, but for $200 with real grover tuners I couldn't say no, because it plays insane and once I added some better pickups the sucker became a blowtorch.

One of the things that I do, when I'm not obsessively pursuing Ibanez Musicians, is consider the total space and what I've got covered. I ain't got twang, for instance....I could well use a Tele and learn to do some chicken-pickin'. On the bass end, I can run all over Precision or Jazz basses....but can't quite get enough growl for a Ricky, thwub for a fretless, or ring for an acoustic.

Posted by: cthulhu at March 17, 2014 12:19 AM (T1005)

575 I'll say one thing, if you put some duncan hot rails in a strat that sucker will be a fire breather. I have 2 set up that way, and it keeps up with any of my full humbucker guitars. It gets the iron maiden sound from hell. It has a tight focused huge crunch. I'm not normally a strat dude but those things are downright evil with a hotrails.

Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at March 17, 2014 12:20 AM (FMbng)

576 One of the things that fascinates me -- and would make a good thesis topic for those pursuing an MA in Music -- is iconic solos played on one style of instrument that are played on a different style in concert. As an example, let's take a totally Strat performance -- for instance http://tinyurl.com/ydhrc4d which is pretty iconic.....why did he then do an SG version (an SG is more LP-ish)? You will note that it is very much "wash-ier" -- http://tinyurl.com/4j95w3w

Seriously -- same dude, same song, guy knows his way around a fretboard, different axes....different interpretations.

579 You'll go nuts trying to figure whats going on in Eric Johnson's head. I remember reading an interview with him on exactly why he used fenders and gibsons. I don't remember it exactly, but I think he said he prefered the gibson, and may...may have used the strat for only a small part on the studio cut. I could be wrong, but I seem to remember it being the case. It strikes a bell because I remember setting up one strat with custom shop '54 pickups just to get THAT sound, and then finding out it wasn't "all" strat anyway.

Dude, ignore what's in his head -- the variables between those two vids is a minor amount of time, a minor amount of approach, and two very disparate guitars.

581 Hey, it's just past 5 o'clock here. Is it too early for a cocktail?

582 Guitars? Cool. Serious question. It seems like with today's electronics, unless you're wanting to just use guitar/amp and nothing else, you can get just about any sound you want out of any guitar. Don't take that wrong. Even as mostly somewhat of a drummer, I think the old American made classics are, well, classic. You want twang? Does my old Fender Bullet Deluxe qualify? My favorite of the very few I own? Taylor DN8. Now to see if I can get back in after hitting post.

584 By the way, you guys and gals who speak that second language of knowing your way around the neck of a guitar,,, I hate you. Okay, not really hate,,, just a monstrous case of envy. Kinda like the folks with a great set of pipes. Hmm, throw in a fine song writing ability and I just described a close friend.

585 Good morning, Sven. Are you still awake or did you just wake up? I woke up too early today because I am pissed that my brother is in the hospital for 35th time. I have pads of paper with details. I only know he has pneumonia again & rehab didn't call to tell me. He called after 11:30 & had been there since 5:30.

586 586 Carol, Just waking up ma'am. Wife says I conked out like a switch had been thrown. I sleep a lot more. Hope things work out vis a vis the hospital.

587 Carol....
Prayers for you and your brother.

And Baltimore County schools are closed due to snow.
Imagine that.

589 Thank you, Sven. He has been in the hospital or rehab since March 30 of last year. Paul is a quadriplegic from strep infections, the one is in cervical spine is the one that caused paralysis. They initially thought he may have had a stroke after they woke him up after being on ventilator & all the other machines and he couldnÂ’t move thing. I am sure if he was in a hospital in Boston area they would have found infection in neck earlier than 19 days later before it did all the damage to him. I have to call administrator of rehab & have list of why he has to be returned to MA. He would be much better if he had family visiting him regularly. I went to Maine once & his kids went twice. Three visits from family in a year isnÂ’t helping him. Social worker there is useless. Thank you. I hope your heart is doing better.

592 "Is it too early for a cocktail?" ---- Depends on the time zone you're in.

594 So, why has nothing been said of a fire in the plane?  This was a 777 by the way.  Remember they had fires?

That could also explain the slow loss of electrical systems. And the drastic changes in altitude as the pilots trying to get high enough to put out the flames, and then a dive to "whip" out the flames (or they too succumbed to the loss of O2).

595 My whacky theory:  1) Competent pilot (either of the two pilot or a third) get control of the cockpit.  2) Kill transponder/ACARS 3) Say Goodnight, mumble something to other aircraft 4) depressurize until passengers are down.  5) Fly up and over Burma. 5) At some point switch transponder cables to reprogram as another flight, for which a flight plan has been filed.  6) Land in China, near Nanning. on a commercial field.  7) Hanger the aircraft - keep AC on until passenger corpses can be off-loaded.  Clean-up, repaint. 9) Profit

You would need: An experienced pilot, a hanger, a couple of guys to move bodies and paint.  You could have the cable made, most cable house would have no idea what it would be for.  The hardest part in the hanger.
