Overnight Open Thread (4 Apr 2014)
— CDR M

So, it looks like Al Gore may want to make a sequel to An Inconvenient Truth. Sorry Al, that dog don't hunt.

Laurie David believes "everything in that movie has come to pass". Really? Was there an increase in destructive tornadic activity? We're in our third straight year of record low activity. Increase in hurricanes? Nope. Obama has the lowest hurricane frequency of any President. North Pole will be ice free? Nah, multi-year ice is growing. What exactly did come to pass then from that movie? Kelo v. City of New London

Remember the Kelo v. City of New London Supreme Court case? It seems it all may have been for naught as the 90-acre plot once earmarked for office buildings, luxury apartments and a new marina, remains vacant.

So how does New London, specifically Fort Trumbull, look now?

“The homeowners were dispossessed for nothing,” wrote The Boston Globe’s Jeff Jacoby. “Fort Trumbull was never redeveloped. Pfizer itself bailed out of New London in 2009. The Kelo decision was a disaster, as even the city’s present political leaders acknowledge.”

Game of Thrones Philosophies

Season 4 is coming this Sunday.

Military Inventions

11 incredible products that were really invented by the U.S. military.

It turns out that you were right all along when you called it "duck" tape. Soldiers in World War II first using the new adhesive called it a variety of names, one of them being an homage to the small water fowl. Johnson & Johnson had created a tape for infantrymen that could seal their ammunition cases in any weather and be ripped from the adhesive with their bare hands.

After the war, the tape got its grey coloring (it was a camo-esque green pattern before, go figure) and made its way into hardware stores. Eventually it became known as a good wrap for air ducts, kicking off its new name and decades of confusion about whether there really is a "t" at the end.

Scenario

So morons, what do you do in this situation? Father hires escort who turns out to be someone he knows far too well.

32 speaking of quotes on "destiny", I give you Sheila Jackson Lee I call upon the aviation industry to stop hiding behind costs and how much it costs and start ensuring that our pilots and our customers, our flying public, are safe. Why do we have the capacity, uh, to dismantle the transponders? Why wasn't the emergency call already in place that it automatically signals when a[n] aircraft goes off its, uh, discerned or destinated -- uh, destiny and destination --uh, as relates to, uh, its flight pattern. Why does it have to be done manually?

It really is a crappy wrap for ducts. As it will dry out over time and leak like a sieve. So it seemed like a good duct tape when introduced and proven to be crappy 5 years later.

81 Nearly one year after they were both seriously injured in the Boston Marathon attack, Rebekah Gregory and Pete DiMartino were married on Friday, following many tough months of recovery. The couple said 'I do' on a 19th-century estate in North Carolina, with the bride slowly walking down the aisle using a special crutch for her left leg, which may soon be amputated due to the severity of her wounds. She was guided by her father, Tim, and son Noah, six, down a bed of pink-and yellow-hued rose petals to her awaiting groom. Sniffles were heard throughout the short ceremony, though the crowd laughed when the officiant asked Rebekah if she would take DiMartino as her husband: "Absolutely!" she replied.

108 Regarding the previous topic: The Marvel studios movies are good popcorn films without being too insulting. Movies like Transformers are insulting. In my book nothing comes close to the Dark Knight movies as far as quality. Man of Steel was dreadful. The X-Men movies always look so cheap for some reason and the new one looks no different. The new Spiderman looks just as bad as the last one; one cannot combine "heavy drama" (i.e soap-opera level acting) in one scene and fighting a lizard man or electricity dude in the next.

After that advice last year, I didnÂ’t want to listen to her about buying Airport Extreme as a router. I read reviews & it was easy to set up. I was working from here today & needed to print something from work. I have wireless printer & program will not recognize wireless printer. I forwarded to my home email & printed from my iPhone. IÂ’m not going to uninstall wireless printer just to work from home. IÂ’ll forward. I was able to print work things at printer here but now I cannot.

203 XP was good, Win7 was good. Looks like Win 9 will be okay, they're being pilloried for the screwup of Win 8. The idea that "metro" apps on a Windows computer would be "only full screen" and "not act like windowed applications" was probably the keen idea of some idiot middle manager who wanted to "make a statement" and "rebel against conformity", i.e. stupid fricking hippy crap. Strangely enough, the new update for Win 8 is going to re-institute the Start button and shove the worthless full-screen apps into a small box and allow you to disable the worthless buggers. So an adult is in charge now over there.

Posted by: D-Lamp at April 04, 2014 10:59 PM (bb5+k)

My understanding is that the President can pardon an individual for any identifiable crimes or accusations. So a Prez could say, "I pardon X for all crimes for which he was convicted on April 8, 2009." Or "I pardon Z for all indictments returned by the Grand Jury on September 14, 2010." But -- again, as I understand it -- the President may not pardon anyone for unspecified wrongdoings or classes of actions. In other words, a President may not say, "I pardon Eric Holder for all instances of perjury during my term in office." or "I pardon Eric Holder for anything involved with Fast-and-Furious."

I think the problem is he took the single book, and tried to make it into three movies. (For reasons of greed on the part of the movie company.) Naturally they had to add a bunch of ridiculous crap to fill out the greatly expanded time slots they needed to fill.

Bernhardt's actually very good in it. Crazy bitch indeed. It's a tryly great film. For my money, Deniro's 2 best are KOC and Midnight Run, both from the 80's and both comedies. Casino is a great movie and IMHo better than Goodfellas, which is also great. Raging Bull? You should probably see it, it's technically brilliant, but I fell it's overrated. ::: walk in to find known local arrogant shitweasel trying to kindle fireplace :::

::: head for kitchen, grabs beer, scopes out large pot locations :::

::: shrieks of horror from living room :::

::: fills largest pot with water and heads over :::

::: extinguish pile of burning kindling that has rolled out onto (new!) carpet :::

::: accolades :::

::: dumb shit departs, ranting about lawsuit over "defective" fireplace :::

Would have loved to have seen that guy trying to get a fire going in the woods at night with minimal tools.

Posted by: mpfs, One ping only at April 04, 2014 11:30 PM (FQPey) No, still HPV. One needs BS4 conditions to study Ebola and from what I'm told, usually the basic Ebola research is done in fragments i.e. studying the function of one Ebola protein in entry or egress or something such as that. Once there is enough proof of concept to start using animal models, that benchwork is contracted out. Makes sense. Fortunately, Ebola is self-limiting so there's that going for us. However, from what I understand, this current outbreak in Africa is a bit more scary because it's not limited to one village. Still, as long as somebody doesn't do something stupid like be part of a mob that rushes Ebola treatment centers (http://tinyurl.com/pytdh34), it should burn out in a few weeks.

405 My understanding is that the President can pardon an individual for any identifiable crimes or accusations.

Pinch off one end with pliers and melt the flat end with a lighter

Cut to length and stuff with the cotton, leaving about 1/2" of room at the end

Pinch off the open end and melt to seal

When you need tinder, cut both ends with your knife and push out with a stick or twig

Ford pardoned Nixon, obviously at a time that Ford was a president and Nixon was no longer a president. He was just a private citizen at that point. It was a presidential pardon of a man who used to be president. Maybe I'm missing something in the point you are trying to make?

Heh.

But seriously, lighters can be fragile and leak out their fuel over time, kitchen matches are one-time-use and not waterproof.

Carrying multiple methods of firestarting is always a good idea, and paradoxically you use the more difficult methods when conditions are good, keep the easy stuff for use when things are bad (rain, blizzard, windstorm etc)

447 407 My understanding is that the President can pardon an individual for any identifiable crimes or accusations.

Ford gave Nixon an unconditional pardon for any acts he may have committed during his presidency. Although it was very unpopular in some quarters, I don't think I have heard of anyone arguing that it was beyond Ford's authority to do so.

Posted by: Anon Y. Mous at April 04, 2014 11:44 PM (IN7k+)

I believe that the "beyond his authority to do so" was actually raised, but....(a) Presidents are not normally liable for Presidential acts; (b) the remedy for Presidential misconduct is impeachment, not damages/jail time; (c) the incoming administration (Ford's) was clearly signaling that the era of flogging Nixon was conclusively over, so the AG wasn't going to press things; (d) Congress wasn't going to press things; (e) nobody else had standing.

In the event of a hypothetical all-encompassing pardon of Holder, the situation is entirely different. Each jurisdiction/grand jury/etc can go after Holder, Holder can brandish his "get out of jail free" card, and each prosecutor can then take it to a court and argue the merits of the pardon.

It looks to me like his pardon power is unconstrained by the text, with the sole exception of impeachments. If the Congress wants to impeach someone, the President will be unable to prevent it. But other than that, when it comes to Federal crimes, the President's pardon power is absolute.

What do you want to know specifically? Esbit stoves have a good track record. Got them as standard issue in the army back in the day. They are light and work well, even in the tropical wet. The downside is long term use. The tablets are not terribly easy to source and if you get enough to last awhile, then what you gain by the lightweight stove, you lose in having to lug around a whole bunch of tabs. As a short term thing, though, they are excellent.

488 ...how to build a fire in a fireplace let alone in the woods.

Got invited to Boss's New McMansion about 20 years ago, back when yuppie know-nothings were still a joke and not the norm. Slyly noted to self that white carpeting extended right up to edge of fireplace, glass doors were of the ornamental, non-airtight variety, and fireplace had a proper damper control for actual fires, but with "switch-on" gas log installed over grate. Saw trouble coming.

Sure enough, proud new owner had to demonstrate several times how Big Fire could be made to flame up with remote control, and how cool it looked behind glass. And then to demonstrate energy efficiency, went to top of stairs and turned on the whole-house fan.

Flame leapt out of door gaps like from a blacksmith's forge. White carpeting suddenly two-tone! Nylon fibers had started to singe before I could get to the damper handle and, more or less, save the place from burning down. They got a nice new "hearth rug" the next week, though I suspect it was polyester.

The next Boss up the ladder from that one (should have known better, came from the real west) had a single-layer metal flue pipe inside a vinyl-siding chimney enclosure. Got a newspaper-log roller and burned that house to the ground.

I've heard mixed reviews about the smoke and residue from the fuel tablets.

Someone told me that they borrowed a friend's Esbit and promptly ruined a meal with the harsh chemical odor the tablet smoke imparted to the food. They were hungry but couldn't eat what they had cooked.

I have wondered if this might perhaps be down to cut-rate discount brands of tablet. Or aged milsurp tablet stock that had chemically reacted with its packaging while in storage.

522 Extreme long range lightweight hikers. In their element, which is a rarefied one indeed, they are awesome to observe. But the rest of the time? Quite a source of amusement, like people bicycling to the grocery in compression pants.

They'll break the handle off a plastic spoon to save that eighth-of-an-ounce. And the stuff they eat, oh Jesus. One thing I like about camping is the camp cookery. Even back-packing, I'll carry a small dutch oven or a thick aluminum skillet. And I cook from "staples," not pre-made freeze-dried space food. They pack fine.

Sadly and accordingly, a lot of the special stoves made for backpackers are not really for cooking, only for boiling a small amount of water. And mixing greenie-powders into it. Put yourself on that diet for a week, and you're in for another week of distress when you come off of it.

Yes I can envision, darkly, some Mission where that regimen might be called for. But all of my concepts of going into back country for pleasure, and most of my bug-out strategies as well, involve at least one piece of iron.

Hmmmm. Maybe. I remember them being a bit stinky, but, not affecting anything that we brewed up. Not tea or coffee or chow. You would normally cook up something in a relatively high can or a billy or something. Ideally covered, but not necessarily. Did they cook/boil up under cover, or on a tin plate, or something? Otherwise the tabs shouldn't do that really. It might be the age of the tabs, like you suspect I haven't had any experience with... wait a minute, I likely did use old stuff. We often got all sorts of ancient shit issued to us. Even WW1 shit on occasion. So, old tabs were likely used, but didn't misbehave like that. Dunno. Maybe it was the brand?

530 "where are you and how much of an outdoor girl is MrsTorquewrench?"

NorCal. So our baseline resilience scenario is a quake big and bad enough to unhouse us, with long delays for humanitarian aid.

The kicker on that is water. Some funds have been spent in recent years to improve the seismic stability of the water distribution in Commiefornia, but we both still remember being without line pressure for some time after the Loma Prieta quake of '89. Which was NOT a genuine "big one".

Water is goddamned heavy. Big trouble to lug around.

The missus is an experienced amateur outdoorswoman who doesn't panic easily and has camped under difficult conditions. It's just that carrying adequate provision and kit is tough for her.

If I'm there to be the big dumb beast of burden, things get simpler, but we can't assume I will always be at home just in time for the shit to hit the fan. Hence the grabbable lightweight "satellite" bag concept atop the main bag.

563 And alternate routes would be available vs my car.

Now that is something worth thinking about, and most people skip it when they're doing the "Going to Mars" game of prep. It's typical for dwellers of the biggest highway-bound cities to know the "surface level" alternate streets, and escape routes, because of traffic jams. But people in more efficient towns don't need to think of that, so they don't.

You need to look at your surrounding neighborhoods topographically, not by the political and property-line maps you use for civilized transportation. Especially, pay attention to invisible watercourses, like artificial streams, ditches, and detention ponds, and know their flood and drought seasons. Once you look at the suburb as a battlefield, there's a surprising number of "egresses." Unless you're on the VFD, don't count on practicing these much.

Ever notice, the newer four wheel utility vehicles are about the same size and HP as the WWII Jeep? I keep waiting for Jeep to notice.

Have a well here, and a pretty defensible road coming in, and a little place up the mountain that has water, even if the neighbors have to get together and hook up our generators to keep it running, but far enough away from the zombies that I think we are fine.

And fires - reminds me of when family would go camping. First thing was, find firewood, then find mom what we called a poking stick, then leave the fire to mom.

Now that she's gone, I get the poking stick, to make the fire burn just so, and I usually get the honor of starting it.

They will continue to harass local/small banks for not having the manpower to keep up with all the new govt paperwork, and they will levy fines against the big banks who will pay the fine because it is probably equal to the amount of money they would have lost making loans to the deadbeats that the govt wants them to make bad loans to. Neighbors where I live are already pretty much all on the same page as far as survival. Most moved there back when...

I am not that worried about me and the bh, we will be fine. It's those who need to get up here I worry about.

I just hope I can hold on to everything I have, and next generation sees the practicality of what we have set up for surviving instead of selling off for $$$ if we're not here when the time comes to really need it.

And, funny bebe's boobs, Hubby calls me his pack mule when we are unloading my "gathering" expeditions. His back isn't that great, so I set everything up so he doesn't have to twist at all when he's lifting, and I try to take the heavier stuff, since thank goodness my back is fine so far.

The only reason I use those recyclable bags is because you can pack more in them, and I can put it over my shoulder and it's the right height and doesn't bang into my knees when I am carrying stuff. Have to have two bags the same weight, so I don't mess up my back.

Very short legs, and it helps not to have the stuff banging you in the knee while hauling!

Read a piece by someone else who grew up in Shitcargo.

They said that their family just loved to argue politics back and forth across the dinner and/or holiday table.

So when this person got old enough, they had the brainstorm, to say to the rest of the family, "Hey, enough talk without action. Time for all of us to get directly politically involved and active, whaddaya say?"

Instant visceral fear from the family elders. "No! If we do that... they will _destroy_ us. Ruin our businesses, wreck our careers, threaten our safety."

The cats will have a say in that.) The 11 Things Invented by the Military article was interesting. One thing that jumped out at me: The KH-11 Kennan satellite, launched in 1976 by the American National Reconnaissance Office, was the first major project to use digital photography. A year prior, Steven Sasson of Eastman Kodak had discovered a way to use a sensor (instead of film) to collect light, and a means of storing the information numerically. So a Kodak employee invented the technology that ended up pretty much killing Kodak. Ironic. That's a pretty good example of "creative destruction".

631 For years I've bought whole bean coffee and ground it before brewing. I always kept the bag in the freezer. Recently I learned that that's not actually a good idea, because condensation can form when the bag is repeatedly removed and replaced in the freezer. So earlier this week I ordered a Friis Coffee Vault and received it on Friday. That was perfect timing, since my current bag is almost empty and I have a fresh bag ready to open in the next couple of days. They have a glossary of coffee terms on their website: http://www.friiscoffee.com/coffee-glossary/ I guess coffee is something we can credit the Muslims for, since it first became widespread in the Ottoman Empire and the Europeans got it from them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coffee#Social_and_culture

Posted by: rickl at April 05, 2014 01:02 AM (sdi6R)

632 Rickl, I hate the way the freezer smells, even when there isn't much in it. My doctor told me to put coffee in it & it will absorb smell. I buy cheapest coffee on sale & it does help. I have three one pound cans in my freezer now. As soon as it warms up, if it ever does, I am going to dump the oldest two in garden. Coffee grounds are good for the soil.

633 I got up hoping it might be decent enough to go start cleaning up rose garden. It's raining & I'm not happy. Tomorrow it's going to be in mid 590s & sunny. I'm cleaning out coffee pot with water. Last time I read directions on how to clean it out, it said to use a cup of vinegar in pot. I had to flush with four times of plain water to get rid vinegar smell & pot cracked. I only use water to clean now. Cream of Tartar removes all coffee stains in pot. Soak in warm water with some added & coffee stains rise to top in a ring, then wash with detergent.

I've read the same thing, somewhere. Yet the first time I saw a digital camera, I said 'Those things are going to kill the film market.' But it took a while, as prices were steep to start and quality could still be beat by film (plus film was more versatile).

Posted by: GnuBreed at April 05, 2014 01:33 AM (cHZB7)

635 Yeah, the image quality of the early digital cameras was vastly inferior to film, so I can understand why a lot of people didn't take them seriously.

669 I can see clearly now the snow has stopped falling. Once I have cleared all obstacles from my path, there will be things to do, places to go, and people to avoid. So best get to it.

670 Walks up slowly. Pokes it with a stick. Yep, it's dead. No doubt about it. Dead. It's dead alright. No sign of life, at all. Flat lined. Starting to smell a little gamey. More gamey than usual I mean.

Posted by: weirdflunky at April 05, 2014 03:42 AM (dpCGE)

671 ...checks again, just to be sure. Yeah, it's still dead.

674 The psalms are a wonderful spiritual resource for those that have an interest in reading them. They address all kinds of human feelings such as depression, questioning of God, fear, desire for vengeance as well as justice as also exhibit praise to God, thankfulness to God, desire for forgiveness and trust in God. The psalms were written by David, the sons of Korah and some unknown authors. Here are some places to go to psalms for help with different situations: If you need comfort: Psalm 23 to know how to come to God each day # 5 To know that God is in control #146 To know why we should worship God # 104 To learn more about God # 24 To feel worthwhile # 139 To please God # 15 To give thanks to God # 146 To meet God intimately # 103 When we're afraid .#s 3, 4, 27, 46, 49, 56, 91, 118 When we're overwhelmed 25, 69, 142 When we need courage 11, 42 When we have to deal with evil people 10, 35. 36, 49, 52, 109, 140 When we need guidance 1, 5, 15, 19, 25, 32, 49 When we need peace 3,4 More resources on psalms and other discussions on living a life of faith can be found in "The Life Application Bible" from which these suggestions were taken.

675 Congratulations to Soldier of the Light Carol, for her unwitting thwarting of the forces of darkness. May your reward be abundant! And now, by the power invested in me by Murphy, overlord of unfortunate coincidence, I declare it time for a dewey-fresh morning thread! (I'll bet it's too early for that to work; maybe if I go feed the pesks....)

676 @676: The central point is well made, and that's one of the wonderful parts about the Bible on the whole. Almost the whole of the human experience, up until modern times is reflected in its pages. Technology may change, but feelings and every type of conflict a human being can experience don't. I might have to read a few of those when I get home, now.

Posted by: Cato at April 05, 2014 03:58 AM (J+mig)

677 ha! if any comment brought on a morning thread, out would be Fenelon's! I may have spent more time in Psalms, and Proverbs, than even the Gospels. (Not to suggest I spend "enough" time with scripture at all.) Probably because they're so easy to find. I just crack my ol' King James right in the middle.

Posted by: mindful webworker - who, me? at April 05, 2014 03:59 AM (qG1i2)

678 I got off my security gig at 2200 last night, came home, talked to Mrs. E, looked at the thread when it was but a pup, went to bed, and sorta slept. Now IHOP for the girls, errands and chores, and back to work at 1400.

679 Oh hell, the roads are a mess, all ice. Too cold for salt to work. Plows are scraping, not plowing, and to no good effect except paid overtime hours for the driver. and when the sun hits it will be worse for several hours. Good conditions on the ski hill though, if the tour buses don't get stuck.

680 Daywalkers up!

681 And a hymn based on Psalm 104- "Sing praise to God, all glorious above" with words of the psalm and pictures from Yorkshire, England https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1JAJ8JLZkE Psalm 104 is a poetic summary of God's creation of the world as found in Genesis 104. Creation is varied and reveals the richness of God's creativity, goodness and love The world is built on God's foundation and even though the Bible says that one day the heavens and earth shall be destroyed (2 Peter 3;10) God will create a new heaven and a new earth (Isaiah 65:17, Rev. 21:1) God provides hope and a firm foundation for believers. Consider taking time to be with God today by praying, reading Scripture and other spiritual writings, participating in Holy Communion and/ or just being in silence with God. God loves you, is with you always and wants to spend time with you, God bless everyone here, and Keep on praying!

682 FenelonSpoke @ 683-
We sing that hymn, and many other likewise beautiful ones in the Presbyterian church, too.

683 "...Psalm 104 is a poetic summary of God's creation of the world as found in Genesis 104." ??? Apparently, my King James is missing a few chapters. Are those the ones where they explain Nod?

686 That's one of the things that unites us as Christians in the Protestant tradition-We sing many of the same hymns and even some of the hymns we have have either come from or made there way to our sisters and brothers in Christ in the RCC.
