Reidcare Taxes Tanning Salons Too
— Gabriel Malor

Oy. Earlier I posted on the phony tort reform in Reid's version of healthcare reform which will make healthcare more expensive. Now let's talk about its tax on indoor tanning. Yes, ReidCare imposes a ten percent tax on ultraviolet tanning at tanning salons.

Tanning causes cancer (except for those studies that say it doesn't; whatever), so Democrats link tanning to healthcare and voila: tax it. Hey, never pass up an opportunity to tax something that idiots will say should be illegal. This is fairly banal creeping socialism: the government should discourage stuff that's legal but not good for you by tax and regulation. In other words, these are mincing steps toward making it illegal. (See Smoking, indoors, in the presence of children, in your own car, etc.)

Entirely facetious observation: isn't the tanning tax going to disproportionately impact Americans of a certain racial type?

UPDATE [DiT]: More Taxes! Here's a comprehensive rundown on additional taxes and penalties (taxes) imposed in the Reid-Obama version of the health bill (via eddiebear).

Whether one believes this, or not, it is mooted by the fact that the federal government has no business in any of this. Most of the interactions between the government and the individual are relegated to the states and health care/insurance/... is certainly a slice of that.

This is a feral government, broken from the civilizing constraints of the Constitution. It shall never be domesticated, again.

Here's my idea:

Want an automatic transmission instead of a more fuel efficient standard? Fine -- but it'll cost you a $2,000 carbon tax. Want air conditioning in your vehicle? That'll be another $2,000. An engine larger than four cylinders? Sure, for $500 per cylinder. Towing package on a truck? That'll be $2,000 to offset the pollution you cause towing your boat around. Rent a U-HAUL trailer? There will be a $100 carbon tax added onto the rental fee.

Taxing toothbrushes and tanning sessions are just baby steps. They've got a brave new world waiting for you.

It's all about the taxes, stupid.

The CBO assessment of the bill tells the appalling story. We are going to raise taxes by half a trillion dollars over the next ten years, increase spending by more than a trillion dollars, cut Medicare by $470 billion but use that money to fund a new entitlement rather than to fix Medicare itself, bend the health care cost curve up rather than down, insert layers of bureaucracy between doctors and patients, and compel and subsidize universal participation in a failed system of health insurance rather than reform or improve it.

They, of course, live a healthy lifestyle and do not indulge in such self-destructive nonsense. That's wonderful, and to be admired, I suppose. But it's important to remember that that incremental socialism never draws a line in the sand. These neo-Marxists aren't going to just stop one day and declare they are satiated. One by one, what are considered "choices" or non-essential activities will be taxed. Then one day, something that you indulge in and hold near and dear to your heart will fall under the confiscatory umbrella. You can count on that, as sure as the sun sets in the West.

141 Weirdness from Politico:

Senate Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad said Sunday that itÂ’s the Senate bill, or nothing at all, when it comes to health care reform.

"It is very clear that the final bill that passed in the United States Senate is going have to be very close to the bill that is being negotiated here," the North Dakota Democrat said on “Fox News Sunday.” "Otherwise you will not get 60 votes in the United States Senate.”

But the White House has suggested that the Senate bill, which has drawn heated criticism from liberal Democrats in the House, may still change when it is reconciled with the House health care bill.

Writing in Sunday’s New York Times opinion page, Vice President Joe Biden said that “I share the frustration of other progressives that the Senate bill does not include a public option,” but suggested nothing is set in stone just yet. “If the bill passes the Senate this week,” wrote Biden, “there will be more chances to make changes to it before it becomes law. But if the bill dies this week, there is no second chance to vote yes.”

And senior White House Adviser David Axelrod took a similar line on ABC’s "This Week," suggesting the administration prefers the House’s abortion compromise, saying “once the Senate passes this bill, obviously there's work to be done. The House has its version; the Senate has its version. They have to agree, and we're going to have to go through one more round.”

I can't figure out how seriously to take this. Does this mean the Dems still have a problem in the House??

Posted by: Robert_Paulson at December 20, 2009 08:12 AM (+deq6)

142 So... since abortion is going to be part of this bill, does that mean that all the Catholic hospitals in the US are going to close? And if so, who will that hurt? Minorities you say? But Democrats love minorities? What? You say that's a myth? Damn you and your magical logic!

AP Poll: Most see climate change as serious

WASHINGTON — Three of every four Americans view climate change as a serious problem that will harm future generations if not addressed, according to an Associated Press-Stanford University poll.

The survey also said that about the same number of people say the Earth probably already is warming, slightly fewer than the percentage expressing that view when asked the same question a year ago.

The AP-Stanford poll of 1,005 adults contacted by telephone in November suggests that people's concerns about climate change have not changed significantly.

Kabuki Theater

The republican "fight" in the Senate over health care.  According to RedState, Judd Gregg advocated eliminating any unanimous consent decrees in the December debate.  In other words, fighting them tooth & nail through the whole month of December.  Instead, the leadership under Mitch McConnell opted for messaging amendments.  And it looks like the health bill will pass by Christmas.

I have no proof, but I bet that this result was determined weeks ago.  I bet that the many Republicans (particularly the Maine sisters) had no stomach to argue this over the holidays.  They needed to get home for Christmas.  But they had to put on a show for their base.  Notice the Drudge headline--McCain says GOP can do nothing to stop bill before Christmas.  How much do you want to bet all this "debate" does get wrapped up before Christmas?  I just hope Nancy doesn't have the votes and the will to bring back her House members and pass it before New Year.

Now, I don't want to go wishy and start despairing about the end of the Republic.  It just means as conservatives that we have to double down to get conservatives back in the leadership of the Republican party.  Get leaders who are willing bring Mavericks back into line and fight for our principles.

As an example, I am cutting a check today to the Senate Conservatives Fund founded by Jim DeMint.  You don't have give to this organization.  Their are others and other conservative leaders.  Hell, you don't even have to give money.  How about giving your time during the next election cycle?

Enough of this "woe of the Republic" crap.  They are firing shots across the bow of our ship.  Do we lay down?  Or do we fight? Isn't this one of the greatest opportunities to reestablish our constititional republic for our kids and grandkids?  Where we stood for freedom?

Or as stated by Bluto (Animal House):

D-Day: War's over, man. Wormer dropped the big one.
Bluto: Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!
Otter: Germans?
Boon: Forget it, he's rolling.
Bluto: And it ain't over now. 'Cause when the goin' gets tough...
[thinks hard]
Bluto: the tough get goin'! Who's with me? Let's go!
[runs out, alone; then returns]
Bluto: What the fuck happened to the Delta I used to know? Where's the spirit? Where's the guts, huh? This could be the greatest night of our lives, but you're gonna let it be the worst. "Ooh, we're afraid to go with you Bluto, we might get in trouble." Well just kiss my ass from now on! Not me! I'm not gonna take this. Wormer, he's a dead man! Marmalard, dead! Niedermeyer...
Otter: Dead! Bluto's right. Psychotic, but absolutely right. We gotta take these bastards. Now we could do it with conventional weapons that could take years and cost millions of lives. No, I think we have to go all out. I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part.
Bluto: We're just the guys to do it.
D-Day: Let's do it.
Bluto: *LetÂ’s do it*!

A pacemaker added about twelve years to my late mother's life, and it was a good  twelve years.

Posted by: Pelayo at December 20, 2009 12:44 PM (8NGHm)

I hope people realize that pacemakers aren't only for old people.  There are patients who have pacemakers implanted at a young age - yes, even pre-teen.  For some, without it, they'd be constantly passed out.  A pain pill won't fix that.

I'd like someone, shomewhere explain to me when a pacemaker is indicated how a pain pill would be a fine substitute.  That situation does not exist.

199 Well, I'm hoping that Republicans will be politically astute enough to realize that the next few years will allow them to campaign against Death Panels, against vicious seniors' healthcare cuts, against throwing Junior in prison for the high crime of refusing to buy health insurance, against impending doctor shortages, hospital shutdowns, the death of the pharmaceutical innovations, and looming healthcare waiting lists. I mean, Good God, if they can't win with THAT kind of ammunition, they may as well formally disband now and save us the trouble.

205 The problem is that the Republicans will run in 2010 and 2012 against all this stuff. They will win majorities. And then they will turn around and do the same earmarking, deficit spending, special interest buying, corrupt bullshit.

We all talk about how great Newt's house was, but it was still corrupt. And Hastert was the worst. Every time the dems lower the corruption bar, the repubs take over and prove that they can still lower it further yet. "We see your corruption and raise you a K-street project and a bridge to nowhere"

209 High frequency of gender defect in Gaza families, result of inbreeding

When these children, identified as females at birth, go through puberty in their teens they grow facial hair and their voices deepen.  This is because they are actually males with defective genatalia that is not descended. Many of them make a transformation to living life as men at this point but surgery is necessary to make a complete physical change.  Medical care in Gaza is not advanced and is quite expensive.  This is happening to multiple members of the same families which makes it that much more prohibitive.

Why?  Families in the region marry cousins and other relatives and their gene pool is not broad enough to maintain health of the species.

The article says that this is a humanitarian issue because of the above reasons that transformation to living as men is difficult.  What about addressing the cultural root of the problem?

I wonder what the fate of the Gaza people will be?  We know how deeply rooted cultural customs are.  Will they change the custom of interbreeding in time to save their people?  They can't procreate if their men do not have male genatalia.

/RACISM!

222 155 So... since abortion is going to be part of this bill, does that mean that all the Catholic hospitals in the US are going to close? And if so, who will that hurt? Minorities you say? But Democrats love minorities? What? You say that's a myth? Damn you and your magical logic!

Posted by: shibumi at December 20, 2009 12:13 PM (OKZrE)

You must've missed the smug comment by some libtard congress critter (not a household name, so I forgot it) when he was asked about the imminent closure of Catholic hospitals because of the abortion provision.  He said, "We'll just buy them and operate them ourselves."  They've obviously discussed this "in committee."
