Above the post update:
Reid just made a statement.
Senate leaders said they had reached a "broad agreement" late Tuesday on a compromise to replace the government-run insurance plan in the chamber's health-care package, but they declined to release details, pending analysis by congressional budget analysts."Tonight we've overcome a real problem that we had," Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) told reporters, adding that the Senate was approaching the end of "a long journey."
"Not everyone is going to agree with every piece we sent over" to the Congressional Budget Office, he said. But "is the end in sight? The answer's yes."
There's a lot of confusion about if they are dropping the public option or not (hence the question mark in the headline). Reid says they aren't killing but it looks like depends on what the definition of "public option" is.
In place of a government-run plan, originally designed as a way of forcing competition on private industry, officials said the Democrats had tentatively settled on a private insurance arrangement to be supervised by the federal agency that oversees the system through which lawmakers purchase coverage. Additionally, the tentative deal calls for Medicare to be opened to uninsured Americans beginning at age 55, a significant expansion of the large government health care program that currently serves the 65-and-over population.
That will drive the Olbermann Left out of their minds. They'll claim it's simply going to enrich insurance companies. Obviously, the details will be what matter.
Original Post...
Wow.
The Senate majority leader, Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, said Senate leaders “have a broad agreement” on dropping a government-run plan from the health care bill, and that the Congressional Budget Office would review the implications of such a move on the budget.“I told head of C.B.O. we would send him something he would have to score,” Mr. Reid said. He added that he had asked Senators Charles E. Schumer and Mark Pryor to work together with a group of liberals and moderates on making sure the health care bill has a vehicle to expand coverage to achieve the aims of the so-called public option.
Well, that will kill the idea of the House just passing the Senate version of the bill PA posted on.
Earlier tonight, the Senate killed Ben Nelson abortion prohibition amendment.
Not really a surprise but he sounds like he's hanging tough on this being a make or break issue for him.
Nelson said he will not draft a compromised version on his original amendment: "I had no Plan B, and I'm not looking for a Plan B. Others may be."But he left the door open for other senators, including Majority Leader Harry Reid, to find a workable solution. "I always listen to the Leader, if the Leader has something to say. But it's not my intent to go looking to achieve a compromise... If others are trying to develop a Plan B -- you always look at Plan B -- but I can't imagine how it would be satisfactory."
A reporter then simply asked, "Are you a 'no' vote now" on final passage?
"They've made it harder to be supportive," he replied.
I'm still not convinced he won't cave in the end and use whatever weasel language Reid offers up as cover to support the bill. No doubt a few hundred million dollars in aid to Nebraska to help it go down, just ask Mary Landrieu.
Right now though, the whole dropping of the public option (or whatever the hell this is) throws everything into turmoil.
Thanks to Dave in Texas for graciously allowing me to move my post up. Be sure to check out his Medal of Honor v. Home Owner Association post below. I really hate those idiots (the HOAs, not the Medal of Honor recipients).

From the article.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senate Democrats said they reached a broad agreement on Tuesday on a possible compromise over a government-run insurance plan in a sweeping healthcare overhaul and would seek cost estimates on the deal.
HEALTHCARE REFORM
"We have a broad agreement," Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid told reporters, refusing to give any details on the talks.
Reid said reports the government-run "public option" had been dropped were "not true."

Many HOA's in Florida are populated by northeastern liberal lawyers who retired with nothing to do. After a lifetime of screwing people up the squeakhole, it's very difficult to find another channel for life, so they volunteer to do battle with vendors, other homeowners, and anyone else who walks on their communal lawn.
They also police the swimming pools looking for dogs, children, or anyone attempting to pee in the pool.

Public option--it's in, no it's out. Abortion language-in, no out.
Look folks, the real point is to create a moving target so opposition can't coalesce around a static bill, like the house version 3200. They learned their lesson over the summer. Any spoken opposition will be dismissed as worrying about a bill in a state of flux, and then suddenly, it will be done. And signed. And there won't be a thing we can do about it, until election day.
Same thing with Cap and trade legislation. The EPA now has the green light to tax, fine and regulate one of the building blocks of life on Earth (CO2). No need to pass that monster bill when they can foist responsibility off on an agency of the gov. that doesn't have to concern itself with electoral consequences, or the consent of the governed.
Your chains and shackles have been cast for you by your government. Step up and slip into your yoke.

When I worked for the Florida Legislature a few years back, I was counsel to the select committee that went around the state taking testimony regarding possible revisions to the HOA and condo statutes. That was surely the worst experience of my life, comparing unfavorably to discovering my near-fatal allergy to fire ant bites.

Torches and pitchforks, huh? It would be a start. But only a start.
The Left doesn't respect or fear the average American. Groups that over time have shown themselves willing and capable of civil unrest, from rioting to filling up jails with protesters, get their way. Tea Partiers and Town Hall protesters who clean up after themselves, leave in a timely fashion, cross at the crosswalks (with the light), doesn't garner fear or respect, only disdain.
Oh, don't forget mockery. Even the precedent mocks "those who disagree" with his goals.

This is what Obama said at the jobs summit this week:
We have a structural deficit that is real and growing, apart from the financial crisis. We inherited it. We're spending about 23 percent of GDP and we take in 18 percent of GDP, and that gap is growing, because health care costs — Medicare and Medicaid in particular — are growing, and we've got to do something about that.
So the Democrats solution is to EXPAND Medicare and Medicaid? Wow, I guess that makes sense to them, but I'm baffled. It must be that "pass something, anything, and will call it a success" mentality.

Rep. SchakowskyÂ’s husband, Robert Creamer, used to be the leader of Citizen Action/Illinois. He also founded its predecessor, Illinois Public Action, in which Ms. Schakowsky served as Program Director. He runs a political consulting firm, the Strategic Consulting Group, which lists ACORN and the SEIU among its clients and which made $541,000 working for disgraced former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich.
Creamer resigned from Citizen Action/Illinois after the FBI began investigating him for bank fraud and tax evasion at Illinois Public Action. He was convicted in 2006 and sentenced to five months in federal prison in Terre Haute, Indiana, plus eleven months of house arrest.
While in prison—or “forced sabbatical,” he called it—Creamer wrote a lengthy political manual, Listen to Your Mother: Stand Up Straight! How Progressives Can Win (Seven Locks Press, 2007).
The book was endorsed by leading Democrats and their allies, including SEIU boss Andy Stern—the most frequent visitor thus far to the Obama White House—and chief Obama strategist David Axelrod, who noted that Creamer’s tome “provides a blueprint for future victories.”
In the book, Creamer draws lessons from decades of experience on the radical left, including the teachings of arch-radical Saul Alinsky, and several episodes from Rep. Schakowsky’s political career. He also lays out a “Progressive Agenda for Structural Change,” which includes a ten-point plan for foisting universal health care on the American people in 2009:
* “We must create a national consensus that health care is a right, not a commodity; and that government must guarantee that right.”
* “We must create a national consensus that the health care system is in crisis.”
* “Our messaging program over the next two years should focus heavily on reducing the credibility of the health insurance industry and focusing on the failure of private health insurance.”
* “We need to systematically forge relationships with large sectors of the business/employer community.”
* “We need to convince political leaders that they owe their elections, at least in part, to the groundswell of support of [sic] universal health care, and that they face political peril if they fail to deliver on universal health care in 2009.”
* “We need not agree in advance on the components of a plan, but we must foster a process that can ultimately yield consensus.”
* “Over the next two years, we must design and organize a massive national field program.”
* “We must focus especially on the mobilization of the labor movement and the faith community.”
* “We must systematically leverage the connections and resources of a massive array of institutions and organizations of all types.”
* “To be successful, we must put in place commitments for hundreds of millions of dollars to be used to finance paid communications and mobilization once the battle is joined.”
