— Dave in Texas Steyn on the nonsense of the "peer-review" claim.
The most amusing part of Ed Begley Jr's spat with Stuart Varney was his grey brow-forward, in your face insistence that "peer-review" is what makes it Science!™ and not mucky opinion-nonsense from all the deniers.
He yelled this at Varney while the world was reading the email exchanges from the "scientists" who for years have been doing their best to hide their work and selecting their peer reviewers. And selecting their willing media acolytes (NYT link, polar bear on slushy ice photo, no charge).
It ain't rocket science for me to take a cheap shot at an idiot celeb whose awareness of current events makes him sound like an idiot. And it ain't rocket science (but it is a cheap blog post) for me to mock it.
I'm just giving you an 81mm round to hand back to your second cousins this weekend when they claim "scientists" are checking all the facts ma'am. The "scientists" are in the bag. Feel free to express that point. It bears repeating to the claim of "the science is settled".
The "science" had owner obligations, and unethically cooked the books to maximize investor returns.

The most annoying part is that we'll still be having to deal with the delusional die-hards for years now, still claiming that their fantasies were reality all along. But the turning point has been reached...I f-ing hope.

I have always liked the "peer review" meme from the scammers. The first hint of the fraud on this came years ago back when my blogging was at Townhall. (I was a lurker here as well but no posts).
In any case someone linked to a site where one of those so-called peers wrote on the topic. He said that he had turned in many comments on the errors in the "hockey stick" graph. Most notably, the lack of coverage for the medieval warm period which made the graph appear to increase dramatically even before the "models" kicked in.
He said that they refused to incorporate his comment and also refused to remove his name from the list of "peer reviewers" when they would not accept his comment.
At that point it became obvious to me that the entire thing was intentional fraud instead of stupid errors.
What I would like to see is the EPA chief being grilled in a Senate hearing. Make her/him defend this data and produce the data they are basing their proposed regulations on.
A good followup would be to ask the head of the FDA about the emails and to suppose that these emails had been uncovered by a whistle blower at several major pharmaceutical firms.
How would the FDA react?
A; Some CEOs would be in jail.

It's settled science that I have a big dick. The women I've banged all said so, though I don't recall if that was before or after I got them drunk and/or paid them.
Sure, I've not nailed any porn stars, but those big dick deniers aren't to be trusted as credible enough to peer-review the science of dick size.

I think what Dave is saying in Texasese is that the scientists had fiduciary responsibilities. Instead, the 'science' has been corrupted by malfeasance.

30 years ago it was "settled science" that stress caused stomach ulcers. A few "deniers" said it was bacteria. The "peer - reviewed" literature all agreed it was stress.
Turns out the "settled science" was totally wrong. Huh.

Eventually, when cooling is obvious and many of these idiots fired, we're still going to be wrong for attacking the scientific method. You see, it was just a few bad apples who corrupted the peer review process. Conservatives were eeeevil for doubting the process, liberals were all right and science-y.
It'll take a while before they give up defending these idiots, but it will happen eventually.

Obama has done a "save face at all cost" decision. This house of cards is coming down with the speed of an avalanche once it starts to gain speed and mass. A lot of people were deceived on this, particularly progressive liberal political people. The progressive liberals wanted this to be real so that they could claim "they" saved the world from mankind.
But it all came crashing down, and now how do you hold the tidal wave of questions on why these people who created this mess of over regulation got to the position they received. Somebody has to go down on this but who? There were tremendous regulation and laws voted on that damaged thousands of jobs and businesses. Who is going to take responsibility for the plant closures? How with a straight face can a progressive liberal demand further traveling down a path of carbon taxation or carbon trading? How can you close the affordable coal fired plants when all the evidence for the reason of the closure was fictitious, and fraudulently created. There were a lot of law makers who used the IPCC material to demand coal closure when in fact it was all fabricated.
I see a lot of law suits aimed at the Sierra Club now, and others for pressing legislation targeting industries and utility companies who were red flagged for closure due to misrepresented studies and clear and utter lies.

Wait a minute: I thought the Coming New Ice was Settled Science, settled way back in the '70s...

This is a watershed for us conservatives, as Sickinmass points out above. The rules, regulations and laws that were passed based on this now-proven-to-be-fraudulent "science" absolutely must be repealed. If not, then any politician who still supports them is ripe for replacement for a very good reason.
There is no longer any excuse for us to restrict oil drilling, or build nuclear power plants, or outlaw incandescant light bulbs, or any of that nonsense. There should be a flood of lawsuits against Greenpeace and the Sierra Club and any other group that's forced us to delay and pay more for energy because of their lawsuits. Hell, if I had the resources, that would be my day job.
We now have a litmus test for anyone who's interested in running for office: "Do you believe in "climate change"? If the answer is yes, it's grounds for instant disqualification, just as it should have been before Climategate.

I must respond to this post:
The Bay City Rollers
Don't understand the reference here.
Pet Rocks.
Not a fraud or a stupid invention. The pet rock craze was just a new method of marketing a joke book.
Y2K.
I have seen a lot of references here at AOS to this being a huge fraud based on the fact that "nothing" happened. Nothing major happened because big companies spent millions revamping their software AND hardware to remove Y2K bugs.
There were about 50 people on the team who were responsible for different items all over the company. As it turns out my software WAS impacted, but it was a minor impact on a function that I did not use. This was not the case for all the hardware and software on site. We wound up having to actually replace hardware that had negative impacts physically wired into them.
The Y2K "scare" was not a fraud.
Global Warming.
Yes a massive fraud.

One can only hope we can return to life as we knew it, utilizing our natural resources etc.(we are capable of doing that responsibly) plus getting rid of the power wielded over our choice of vehicles, and demanding the use of products that are pure trash, all in the name of protecting the environment lie. The truth is nobody wants to ride around in clown mini car deathtraps, sit freezing in our homes, using mercury ridden dim bulbs, and all the rest of the regressive plans being foisted on us. If you were to draw up a matrix of political and economic policies, of every country in the world, and look for overlap, look for areas where they all pretty much agreed, in actions, if not in words, youÂ’ll find just three or four areas. One would be that they are all into this climate change crap. Another that theyÂ’re all (increasingly) censoring the internet within their borders, and in some case outside. And a third, interestingly, is that they are almost all shifting intellectual property breaches from the civil code, to the criminal code.
I donÂ’t believe this is coincidence.

Yeah, the Y2K thing was pretty much a non-issue for me. I understand that businesses rely on computers much more that I do and must therefore take that much more seriously. When your payroll is computerized, it's important. IIRC, Microsoft put out a patch for it, which was the extent of my preparation for it.
Still, this whole climate change thing is becoming a pervasive annoyance. You can't watch a TV show without some overt or covert GW message. Schools are emphasizing it instead of core instruction and kids test scores and ability for critical thinking are suffering as a result. There's no way to get away from the subject unless you turn off the TV or radio, which, come to think of it, isn't a bad idea.
I hope that Climategate kills it for good. I know it'll take a while for the programming to wear off for the easily swayed. But this is a crisis for the left, one that we shouldn't waste.

Yes, a lot of time and money had to be spent to update old code, and minor glitches no doubt showed up. However, the lights stayed on, airplanes didn't fall from the sky, bank accounts didn't get wiped out, and for the most part nothing happened.

Some of those "minor glitches" could have caused MAJOR failures if they had not been fixed. For example; we had some hardware that actually froze up under the testing regime.
everyone had to be at work on New Years Eve in case of major problems that never happened.
Certain circles in the government wanted us (Nuclear Power Plant) to activate the Emergency Facilities and man up the E-Plan as if we had had a major accident on New Year's Eve. Luckily saner heads prevailed on that one.
The industry was able to convince them that it would needlessly scare the public.

Like - "500 thousand jobs created or saved", or "socialized healthcare will actually save money over ten years," or "the most ethical and open congress in history," or "the problems this administration inherited."
It is in their minds so it is true...

Remember the Cold Fusion hubub a few years ago?
The two inventors, Fleishman & Pons, ran an open book operation. The scientific community reviewed their work, was unable to duplicate their results and tore the theory to shreds.
If Cold Fusion data and methods were as manipulated and kept as secret as AGW we might be spending billion building Cold Fusion reactors.

For the proles it's a faith based program. The people spreading this message still have faith, and will continue no matter what. Even if it means changing the message slightly.
For the high priests and priestesses it's all about the money. There is a lot of money to made in fear mongering. You think GE is going to let a few leaked emails put a stopper in their plans?
Note also that Christianity has been attacked by the MSM/commies for a better part of century is this country, and it is still a powerful religion in the world.

I was shocked, confused, bewildered As I entered Heaven's door,
Not by the beauty of it all, Nor the lights or its decor.
But it was the folks in Heaven Who made me sputter and gasp--
The thieves, the liars, the sinners, The alcoholics and the trash..
There stood the kid from seventh grade Who swiped my lunch money twice.
Next to him was my old neighbor Who never said anything nice.
Herb, who I always thought Was rotting away in hell,
Was sitting pretty on cloud nine, Looking incredibly well.
I nudged Jesus, 'What's the deal? I would love to hear Your take.
How'd all these sinners get up here? God must've made a mistake.
And why is everyone so quiet, So somber - give me a clue.'
"Hush, child,' He said, 'they're all in shock.
No one thought they'd be seeing you.'
JUDGE NOT!
Remember...Just going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more
than standing in your garage makes you a car.
Every saint has a PAST...
Every sinner has a FUTURE!!!

I wonder if some of this lack of skepticism isn't partly attributable to the difference between Science and Engineering.
In my first year of Mech Engineering I was taught that in general, engineering is the economic application of science. There are other more elaborate definitions, but that's good enough.
Hell, I'm continuously sceptical of my own work. Sleep on it, recheck it and check it again. Then present it to peers, Mgr, VPs for potential better ideas, revisions, approval and funding.
When engineers are wrong bad things happen promptly: People are injured or die, pollution happens or as a minimum we just lose money.
... that said, my brother is a scientist and it seems like he and his peers go at each other like dogs. This AGW Cabal needs to be punished severely.

There was no end to the doomsday-ish Y2K hyperbole. I got sick of it real quick. Anyone with a little gray matter knew that there was going to be minor--if any--problems. I was in the Army at the time, and I knew people who were stocking up on non-perishables and ammo in preparation for the "coming apocalypse". I toasted in the New Year and smiled when the electricity stayed on, computers still functioned, and no body had to end up foraging for food. What a surprise.

As Mark Steyn points out, Ed Begley Jr. recites "peer-reviewed" many times, as though it were a talisman to protect someone or some thing. What is Ed afraid of?
Wiki indicates that Ed Begley Jr. graduated from Loa Angeles Valley College, a community college. This looks like the answer. Ed studied acting, but his mathematics and science skills are still at the high school level. Ed just isn't up to thinking for himself at the level required.
Someone here at AoSHQ posted a list of Hollywood actors and their educational level (mostly high school grads). Ed is one more for the list.
Ed B.: your "peer-reviewed" articles are "fixed". The published studies aren't really peer-reviewed, and one of the released e-mails proves that the fools at the CRU conspired to limit review to "predictable" reviewers only.

A lot of that was done. There was a certain amount of internal politics involved in many organizations as well. It was seen by some as an opportunity to upgrade hardware (using a different budget rather than limited hardware budgets) even if it didn't require upgrading.
Prudential, for example, had a number of critical systems running on IBM PS/2 hardware, which had RTC issues where they wouldn't "roll over" correctly "automatically". If however, you simply reset the data/time manually to 1JAN2000, then the RTC would maintain that and all would be well for the next 100 years or so. The easy way out would have been to simply do the manual date reset on Jan 1 which IBM had certified as an acceptable workaround.
However...those PS/2 systems were hooked up to a (very reliable and robust) Token Ring LAN but the Ethernet Nazis were keen to see that all go away even though when it came to "hauling the freight" under combat conditions, I'd benchmarked the existing 4mpbs T/R being only slightly behind the new 100mpbs Ethernet they wanted. A trivial config change to the 16-4 cards to switch them to 16mbps would have had the T/R at parity with the Ethernet -- which would have been politically unacceptable. [Lesson: stated "speed" numbers are often meaningless, you need to test a given LAN architecture under load to see what it can really do]
I didn't make a stink over it being a hired gun and it wasn't what I was there for anyway, it just happened that the machines I was working with were on the T/R and some on the Ethernet so I was in a position to draw comparisons.

We had some of that "lets upgrade hardware" using Y2K budget as well. Like I said, we had about 50 people on the team and we were each required to develop a testing regime for the items we were responsible for
What some of the people tried to do was do a write up saying that a particular piece of hardware or software could not be adequately tested therefore replacement by a "certified" product was justified.
When those papers went forward they were halted at management review and the writer was required to personally justify why it could not be tested to the Manager.
Most of them were sent back to the drawing board.

Now, I am no scientist, and have not kept up with that issue as I have AGW, but when I was a kid (late 60's thru 70's) I used to fish a lot every summer. so did most of my friends.
