The high cost of removing global warming
— Purple Avenger

That impish prankster global warming is already crushing state budgets with whopping bills for snow removal.

...Maryland's State Highway Administration has spent more than $27 million this year on snow removal, the bulk of that clearing away a massive pre-Christmas storm. But the agency's annual snow-removal budget is just $26 million...

...Stacey Stegman, a spokeswoman for the Department of Transportation, said it costs Colorado $4.85 to send one snowplow one mile down one lane of highway. "It adds up," Ms. Stegman said. "We're tightening the belt."...

Of course there is a "sliver lining" to all this global warming. After we've embraced the suck and accepted our fate, and created the vast new network of dirt ox cart paths connecting our mud huts, global warming removal will no longer be necessary. Did the settlers on the plains living in sod houses have snow plows and paved roads? Of course not, and they got along just fine.

3 They plowed our roads in NY with mega high taxes on us......a lot lower taxes in Colorado and they only plow  the main roads.  So when it snows heavy you just stay home from work.  A win-win.
Good work Gore.

4 Global warming causes excessive snowfall.  Also plagues of blood, plagues of frogs, plagues of lice, plagues of flies, plagues of livestock deaths, plagues of boils, plagues of hail, plagues of locusts, plagues of darkness, and plagues of death of firstborn.

It no longer matters what reality is and how many people oppose these things. We will get force fed the shit sandwitch regardless.

6 Budget buster or not, the irony of Barry returning from the UN "global warming" summit to two feet of snow in DC was worth every cent!

7 This year is already worse than last year was up here in MA. We have had the same snow on the ground for at least 3 weeks. 10 years ago it was a treat to have significant  snow before Christmas.

9 That the state of Colorado knows exactly what something like that costs is either incredible, or that is what the contractor quoted them.

"...it costs Colorado $4.85 to send one snowplow one mile down one lane of highway."

Oh really?  Do the snowplows in Colorado run on snowplow driver farts?  Even if that is the case they also need to factor in the cost of the driver's Taco Bell® diet.  I'm thinking she's WAY off her numbers.  Which is why government sucks so bad a budgeting.  Looks to me like she added the driver's pay and the MPG on fuel and then put her pencil down.

Insurance for the snowplow and the driver?
Cost of the snowplow itself?
Maintaining the snowplow?
Dispatching,  weather monitoring and other support for the snowplow?

I guess math is hard.

They got along fine because the government was far away and seldom thought about.

17 Why don't they just tax the snow, and use that money for snow removal (and then double-count it and use it for health care, too)?

Or they can just tax the snow's employer, so that way it will essentially be free.

18 Also not figured into these things is the cost of repairing roads. In Colorado, you'll get dumped on, then the sun will come out the next day with a vengeance; clouds dump on you the day after. Build up enough snow and you get ice once you smash it down.

Run the temperature up and you get expanding and contracting asphalt, ice melts and freezes again in the cracks and everything shatters. Couple of years back we got AlGored. City didn't get the snow off, so by the time it all melted all of the roads were chopped up with potholes.

It took a long time and a lot of money to patch them.

19 The northern hemisphere is about to be hammered with some more global warming:

I do love hypotheses that are 'proven' by anything that happens!  It makes science so much easier...and profitable.

21 Even in horse and buggy days they cleared streets and roads of snow at least the deeper drifts. Hopefully not too many states planned their future snow removal budgets on global warming forecasts. Mid term forecast show the Eastern half of the US getting really cold over the next few weeks, the West should be nice and warm.

22 Or you could live in a liberal state like Washington and have the mayors not plow anything or salt anything because it might endanger some snail darter. Just hunker down in your homes til global warming melts the snow and ice naturally. But don't watch any tvs or use your radios, don't want to increase your carbon footprints.

23 Hey PA: What the hell are you talking about? We froze our asses off! What we would have given for a snow plough or even the $4.85!

24 A normal thinking person would believe that with the emails from East Anglia/CRU released, along with the epic fail at HopenChangen, and this effing record cold and snow everywhere, that the Carbon Credit license to tax/steal scheme would be DOA.  I have been from one side of teh internets and back, and you will be shocked to see how many corporations have small armies of lobbyists waiting, just waiting for Obama to give the go ahead.  I predict the amount of money stolen is going to be breathtaking.  By the way, what comes after trillion?

Posted by: sirsurfalot at December 30, 2009 03:46 PM (UPNlB)

25 You are all gonna die in a fiery blaze if you don't give me lots of money real soon.  Heretics.  Ignore the snow around you, it means you have less time to live if you don't give me money.

26 Hi Sir...: I would assume quadrillion, but what do I know? We do not have all the trillions owed, so the question is moot. I say exploit our natural resources that we know that we have. They are really more valuable than "carbon credits" or dollars at this point (or damn soon, even as time is reckoned with the living). As a zombie I am in a position to know about underground resources of the natural variety! They can at least keep us warm! Well, at least the living. I suppose I should not assume a zombie persona without the proper popular cultural "facts" involved conveyed by movies (sounds like AGW really), but I will be an ass and wing it anyway! We will more than likely be moving into a "value" society soon enough. My wicked-smart (I am not kidding, I can easily get into Mensa and he can make me feel stupid at his whim!) brother is thinking of going the survivalist route in Canada where he now lives (well, a "sort of kind of" survivalist on 100+ acres!). He may be a Canadian in a year! Brain drain! Dogs and cats living together! Individual zombies having more brain power than the president of the US! That is just sad! Do not get me started about the Congress of the US. WE ARE SO SCREWED! Aside to AlGore. Join us. We are so waiting! Mother Earth so wants your fat pompous ass fully grounded. I am just sayin'. My smarter brother also said that I may be interpreted as the chief "wingnut" in my locale. Any help on why this can be considered funny would be appreciated. Wing nuts seem sort of innocuous, but then I did not know what "teabagging" meant! It seems weak which always makes me wonder when I should get the long knives out. Old, dead, but still feisty!

27 The Oklahoma City/County road people announced this morning that trying to deal with the maximum 14" of globular warmering debris that fell last week has used up most of the yearly budget of road salt & sand; and considering how little good that did in many areas, if we get anything else like this this winter, we're screwed.

Posted by: Firehand at December 30, 2009 05:53 PM (i2fkw)

28

When my late dad worked for the county road dept they used big snowplows called FWDs and rotery snowblowers and would often close the road till the snow was cleared away

29 These winter snowstorms were caused by unusualy high amounts of percipitation, none were caused by abnormally LOW temps. Morons must have been smoking dubies in the biy's room during that 8th grade earth science class
