ok, here is my question: if the Senate votes to scrap the public option & increase spending on Medicare & Medicaid instead, won't that raise a hue & cry from the state govts which must partially fund Medicaid?
don't the people in CA & Mich. get it yet?

From Moody's link:
"In a report released on Tuesday, Moody's set the two countries apart from other top-rated sovereign borrowers, calling them merely "resilient" rather than "resistant," a label it applied to Canada, France and Germany, where public finances are in better shape."
Economic diplo speak for "your countries' finances are going in the toilet faster than the others, do you want your Chinese-issued credit card revoked or not"?

In Tiger's case, it's probably more quickies. He has all the symptoms of a sex addict.

meanwhile, in MA...
I voted in the primary this morning.
On the Democrat side we have 4 nitwits running to the left of Obama and all promising to "carry on Ted's legacy" of corruption and shitty legislation. One candidate, Cocksucker Capuano, is actually running against Dick Cheney in his tv ads.
On the Republican side we have a great candidate in Scott Brown, a state senator. Brown is handsome, clean, and articulate, so I'm pretty sure he's got Biden's vote.

I watched a little of Andrew Sullivan on the Joy Behar show last night. It is pretty obvious that that is one bitter, crazy woman. And that Joy Behar is not much better. Two charter members of the Cocoa Puff's Society.

Some thoughts about this.
Minneapolis is home to some of the moonbattiest liberal moonbats in the land. It's a great town -- great live music scene, especially -- but the politics are far more liberal than the rest of Minnesota. Garrison Keillor is a good example of the breed: a guy who's made his fortune as the avuncular sage of the midwest, chock full of traditional values and love for hearth and home; yet is a colossal dickhead in person, and festeringly bitter liberal partisan.*
Minnesota is also a bastion of what is called the "prairie socialist" mindset. These are good folks of Norwegian and Swedish stock who have carried a fondness for statist intervention in their genes from the Old Country to the new. However, there are also very many center-right folks in the state, especially in rural areas. It has a large Lutheran and Catholic population, and a growing evangelical Christian one. It's this odd dichotomy that has led Minnesota to elect two of the most liberal Senators in Congress (Franken and Klobuchar), and yet elect a Republican as governor (Tim Pawlenty).** I have a feeling that this state will trend Republican in the 2010 mid-terms -- for the simple reason that the Obama-buzz has faded into a morning-after hangover, and the Donks have acquired a squinty, put-upon frown in this state as the unemployment numbers trend ever upwards and the hated wars overseas drag on.
The state's budget is in the crapper, too, and Pawlenty came under a lot of heat for basically cutting the budget himself after the state legislature failed to do so. All the usual suspects were outraged when the money disappeared: public-sector unions, the educational combine, the public-safety unions (cops, firefighters), the various welfare agencies. But the anger of the voters seems to be directed more at the spenders than the Governor over this, and I find that a hopeful sign.
*Senator Rodeo Clown, the Hon. Al Franken, could be his twin.
**We also have a love for the freakish -- Jesse Ventura was governor before Pawlenty, and managed to piss off nearly everyone while not really accomplishing very much of note besides making the Governor's office a laughingstock.

Ventura's election was a good example of a common malady in democratic societies -- the apathy of older voters and the exquisite stupidity of younger ones. The twentysomethings who voted for Ventura loved the idea of it, but the actuality of his tenure was an unabashed disaster. (Rather like Obama's tenure so far, in fact, and for many of the same reasons.) He left the state government apparatus a shambles, the budgetary system in ruins, and a bitterly-divided state Legislature.
Ventura refused to actually lead during his tenure, and fobbed off a lot of the bread-and-butter stuff onto the state legislature. And -- Democrats being who they are -- they interpreted this as a mandate to go nuts with welfare and infrastructure spending. Now, nearly a decade later, the bill is coming due at the worst possible time and everyone is pointing fingers. It's a pretty shameful display. Pawlenty actually did the hard thing in forcing a budget cut over the (Democrat-controlled) legislature's objections, but we'll still be living with the consequences of that clown Ventura for years to come.

What bothers me the most are the women in my office crowing about how Tiger "got what he deserved" when she whacked him with a golf club. This bothers me because if it had been the other way around, they'd be screaming for his head on a stick. Double standard much?
I'm also pissed because I've been reduced to eating rice and beans like a third world peasant, and it's probably going to get worse from here. I've cut my rent and utilities in more than half and I haven't bought new clothes in six months (and I'm closing on losing 50 pounds, so they hang like a dishrag on a doorknob -- and my boots gave out right as the snow started) -- and I still can't afford meat. And if this all Copenhagen/Cap'n'trade/Healthcare/God knows what-all goes through the way Our Masters want, I honestly don't know what's going to happen. And I've only got myself to worry about -- I can't imagine trying to support a family under these conditions.

Joanna,
I'm sorry about your budget woes. I've been funemployed for over a year, but fortunately my husband has a good job. Still, we are on the first food budget since we were first married 25 years ago.
If you'd like to try to incorporate some meat into your meals and you like pork, I'd recommend you look for sales on pork blade roasts. Out our way (SoCal) we can get it on sale for about $1 a pound (sometimes 97 cents a pound; sometimes $1.29). Get a big hunk of meat, make the first meal something relatively simple, then the following meals can be made with leftovers. I have a lot of good pork recipes if you'd like them.
Hang in there!

It's not that I don't *like* rice and beans, because I do -- I'm a good cook and I make the most of it. It's the indignity of it that galls me -- this is the crap my grandparents had to put up with, for God's sake. I practically have to choose between eating a hot meal and eating with the lights on. Why in hell would anyone want to do this on purpose? Screw the polar bears; I'll settle for *not* having a B12 deficiency.

The good news is, we will eventually bottom out on the unemployment thing and begin to increase again. Whether or not this happens before 2012 is the big question. I'm gonna work a lot of crummy jobs before I get a good one again, but what else is there to do? I'm too old to be a Chippendale's dancer, Ohio literally has no more unemployment to hand out to White Males, and I honestly can't take welfare payments in any shape or form. Too bad. It was a real life-saver for our budget and pork is so darned versatile! I guess I'd go for chuck roast, large size, and cook it by braising on a weekend, then use the left overs.
The whole psychology of this unemployment/funderemployment/economic woes is depressing. My husband is in the biggest job he's ever had, but he can't really enjoy it because we are on a tight monthly budget (for the first time since I was in grad school umpteen years ago) and have seen our house depreciate about 15% since the three years we've been in it. Kinda sucks.

It occurs to me that while I have been reduced to what amounts to genteel poverty, in cooking, reducing involves cooking away the excess to produce a thicker, stronger, richer substance. So I think I'll get through this without too much damage.

My guess is that we will see closings of stores, too. Most particularly Macy's, K-Mart, Sears, and Penny's.
Around here, the little boutique stores and gift shops have already closed, and a lot of strip malls are at less than 50% occupancy.
Also, even if corporate sales are ok, they may have made those sales figures through their internet operations, and will figure that the bricks and mortar stores are an expense they don't need.
Commercial real estate is really in trouble here in Indiana, and I don't see it bouncing back any time soon.

Have no fear about the economy or jobs lord Obama creator and saver of jobs is here to rescue all of us!
Dec. 8 (Bloomberg) -- President Barack Obama is proposing new aid for small business, public works projects, and home- energy efficiency measures to create jobs and reduce the unemployment rate from a 26-year high.
The initiatives, which Obama will discuss at 11:15 a.m. today at the Brookings Institution, a Washington research institute, follow a jobs forum he hosted at the White House last week on how to bring back the more than 7.2 million jobs that have been lost since the start of the recession.
Barry will invent jobs and the media will dutifully report it for him.

President Barack Obama recently called Rep. John Conyers Jr. to express his frustrations with the Judiciary Committee chairmanÂ’s criticism.
In an interview with The Hill, Conyers said his opinions of ObamaÂ’s policies on healthcare reform and the war in Afghanistan have not sat well with the president.
According to the lawmaker, the president picked up the phone several weeks ago to find out why Conyers was “demeaning” him.
ObamaÂ’s decision to challenge Conyers highlights a sensitivity to criticism the president has taken on the left. ConyersÂ’s critical remarks, many of which have been reported on the liberal-leaning Huffington Post, appear to have irritated the president, known for his calm demeanor.
People need to stop picking on poor little Barry. Don't they know how historic he is?

I read and hear about these folks who save so much with coupons, but I have to say that I have been using coupons for over a year now and they don't really cut down on the food portion of the bill all that much. The coupons tend to be for ready-to-eat and junk food items or for premium brands of staples. Coupons make a big difference on household goods and medicines, but not so much for food.
The key in cutting our food bill has been me hitting sales, stocking up on things when they are cheap, and freezing them. Also, going to the same store where you know their product line and using the store discount card.
The diet we're on now makes it harder because some things are simply off the table now.

Thanks for asking, Mama! I think he's doing pretty well. He's lost about 13 pounds (in three weeks) and, more importantly (from the standpoint of his blood glucose thing), he's getting almost an hour of exercise a day. The doc recommended losing 15 pounds to start and his next blood test is next week.
In addition, I've lost 8 pounds, so that's nice!
The hardest part has been interpreting the carbs/sugar thing. Cutting out the fat has been no problem, but cutting carbs, particularly sugars (if you include natural sugars from fruits and veggies), is hard. We have three weeks of data on our diet now so we're ready to go review the diet I made up (based on the Mayo Clinic) with a nutritionist. If processed sugars are all that matters, we're golden, but if the natural sugars "count" then it's still a struggle every day.
Salt is also really really hard, but fortunately his blood pressure is ok.

Also, if you go to bakerys and bagel places at the end of the day and check the dumpster, they chuck hordes of bagles and donuts and crap in the garbage (in sterile plastic garbage bags) just becuase they're a day or two old.
And if you put on raggedy old clothes and smear dirt on your face you can pretend to be homeless and panhandle or go to food shelters.
And if you check behind the fast food places you can steal their used frying oil and make biodiesil.
But then again, if you check in your neighbors house and hit him with a toaster you can just steal stuff from his fridge.

Gawd, Entropy, you owe me a monitor. I literally spewed when I read that.
I think it's not the survival aspects of these tight budgets that are a killer so much as the psychological aspects. And, of course, everything's relative. When we were first married and I was a grad student, I got 4 meals off of one chicken and happily made meals based on lentils, beans, and whatnot. But we're almost 50 years old, have worked our asses off all our lives, never had ANY help from anyone, and should be planning retirement, not clipping coupons.
I know many people have it much worse than we do, but it just makes me sad to see my husband drudging off to work feeling like a failure when he is at the top of his field now and should be enjoying life.

Salt is salt, otherwise known as NaCl. Someone asked me about it back a few years ago and I checked it on my nutrition program.
I should have known that anyway being an "old salt" who used to go to sea all the time.

CHICAGO (Reuters) – Hunger is spreading while the number of homeless families is increasing as a result of the recession and other factors, according to a report on Tuesday.
The U.S. Conference of Mayors said cities reported a 26 percent jump in demand for hunger assistance over the past year, the largest average increase since 1991.
Middle-class families as well as the uninsured, elderly, working poor and homeless increasingly looked for help with hunger, which was mainly fueled by unemployment, high housing costs and low wages.

175 -- while I will neither condone nor vouche for Entropy's oh so nuanced attempted to elicit quick sexual gratification for himself (perhaps this should be henceforth referred to as the Tiger Effect or "tigering" if you will); he has a great point about procurring meat for one's table. My adendum onto that would be -- manage to snag yourself a crock pot, and you'll be set.
Squirrel chilli isn't too bad. And you can pick up ham hocks and stuff like that relatively cheaply if you look out for them. You can also try going into cahoots with another person on expense sharing.
As for Mr. Woods -- well, live by the sword, die by the sword (pun intended on every level). My husband and I have the perfect relationship agreement: mutually assured destruction in the case of infidelity. He'd kill me if I ever thought of straying, and likewise right back at him. (although we're pretty faithful, and we're well into middle age now, and kids, so no money -- we're not really high risk canidates -- back in the day however, pitches were thrown both of our directions, basic love for one another, respect for the family unit, respect for our own moral code...and fear of being torn apart and never being found kept us from swinging I'd like to think in that order).

Fortunately, no. (Of course, the doctor didn't really give very helpful advice - basically just told my hubby to avoid fat and sugar... as if we didn't know we couldn't it donuts any longer!) Permit me to say that most MDs with whom I've dealt stink. The only good ones I've dealt with were radiologists and orthopedists.
His BP is fine and there really is no reason to worry about salt. Unfortunately, this whole glucose and diet thing has him so worked up that he's literally trying to track everything and hit all the numbers perfectly all the time. God bless him, he's never dieted before and it sure does show! He doesn't have the diet psychology down right yet.
Anyhoo, Mayo Clinic recommends staying belw 2300 or 2400 mg of sodium, even if you're healthy, and that is surprisingly challenging. But we're managing.

So you don't have to catch it and feed it corn dodgers to cleanse it. I just thought since they were omnivores they might be gray meat like possum.

Runningrn, IÂ’ll let you in on a little secret, you can go earlier in the day of their special event and put aside the things you want and then you just go in and pick up your packages. Or, if you get to know one or two salespeople really well, you donÂ’t even have to go back that night, you can go in the next day to get your stuff. And theyÂ’ll ring it up that night so you get the 10 points per dollar! IÂ’m on my way there this morning to pick up my stuff that got rung up Sunday morning.
I think we just live in an area that has so far not been hit with as much of a downturn, though I find it hard to believe given that AT&T is mostly gone back to Atlanta now, Microsoft laid off thousands and canceled contracts with many vendors, Boeing has had lay offs, all the big architectural firms have as well. IÂ’m just not sure where these people work that have the money.

My hygiene may be lax but I've got squirrel steak! Now will you have sex with me?
For squirrel? No. Come back when you've got steak from something with more than one stomach, and maybe we can talk.
The rest of you guys are awesome (even polynikes -- I know where you're coming from with the coupons and what-not, but I don't subscribe to a newspaper (shock shock) so I don't get coupons, and I can't afford to print them off the intarwebs -- plus I try to avoid boxed diners and such). If there's more like you out there, we'll make it through.

Yeah, they are basing that on that one tree that we were making fun of last weekend.
This is what irks me about the coverage of climaquidick. All you here about is the e-mails and hiding shit. Nobody talks about selectively cherry picking data and creating bogus fudge factors for temp data.
All of that is intentional fraud and not a damn soul is talking about it!

For those of you who, like me, can no longer stand to watch the jug-eared asshole on TV, HERE is the transcript of his last speech.
Basically he wants to take the TARP funds that have been repaid and spend them on porkulous round II. It seems that throwing money at typical liberal welfare programs, union cronies, and bribing other blue State pols really doesnÂ’t do anything to the economy.
So we should do it some more. One wonders about the legality of spending money allocated for one use by congress on another use. He probably doesnÂ’t give a shit though, he knows that this congress will NEVER hold him to task.

I guess they aren't including state and local taxes as part of that inflation thing, because ours have risen like a rocket ship, and NY is still in trouble.

polynikes: Smart shoppers know where to get the best deals in their area.
'nam vet: Ohio is currently loaded with white-tail deer, or as we are calling them out here, "poor man's beef". One more bad winter, and there will be more poaching than a Robin Hood movie.
runningm: The people who have Xmas dollars to spend will be spending them. For a lot of us bummed-out bloggers at home right now, there are not so many this year.

Just to pick up on the food trend. When I was in College, I and a buddy got an apartment one summer. Food intake consisted of beer, hot-dogs, beer, pizza.
I gained some weight. Actually,a lot.
Since I wanted to lose it, my sister suggested some sort of no-carb weight loss program. No bread, no sugars, etc. So I tried it. This coming from a guy who drank a shit load of coffee a day with three scoopfulls of sugar in each cup. I wound up replacing the sugar with sweet-and-low, and cut out the bread with my meals.
It worked. I did lose the weight. Odd thing though, I also lost my taste for sweets. To this day, I don't care for ice cream, chocolate, cake, or any kind of candy.
And I'm someone who could have OD'd on Butterfingers when he was a kid...
Funny thing is, no one that I know can understand why I don't like sweets. It's almost that I'm not human.

Our wars over there are just a thin layer on top of the Sunni/Shi'a, Arab/Persian civil war. This war has been blowing hot and cold for centuries, and now that Iran and Pakistan have nukes, who knows where it will go? America and the rest of the West really have a limited amount of leverage here: the real war is within Islam, not Islam against the West. There's going to be a lot of "splash damage", too: the Turks, the Jordanians, the Moroccans -- all "moderate" states in grave peril from one extremist camp or another. Even Indonesia (the largest Muslim state by population, though neither Persian nor Arab, is predominately Sunni) is at risk.
Suicide bombers are the guided missiles of the Islamic civil war now raging in the middle east. Human life has never been held all that dear in that part of the world, but it's cheaper now than ever before.

Hi, Joanna, here are some tips I learned after my husband died, leaving me in a horrible state:
You can sell almost anything. I sold my wedding/engagement rings, all of my other jewelry, my old lps, artwork, electronics, etc. Plus, bartering can work with small goods and a local corner store. Gold and silver prices are high now. As Gandalf said, paraphrase, if you are too attached to an object, it will not help you.
Go to the Farmer's Market late its last day of the week. They're practically giving food away because it won't keep and they don't want to take it back with them. Look pathetic but determinedly cheerful and be extra-polite and they will fill up bags of food for you.
I know you wanted to be a reporter. Give up that dream. Do anything else, even volunteer--it can lead to pay at some point.
Resole your shoes if they give out. Way cheaper. Thrift stores and the Salvation Army are your friends.
Library books and meditation breathing to distract yourself from bad or hopeless thinking. Get up and physically change your position if you get stuck in a bad mental place. With practice, you can do meditation breathing anywhere.
Clinics--go to immediately when you are sick. Do not let yourself get run down if you think, "I can't afford the clinic." You can pay in installments, but you must not lose your health.
Hit the local co-op and ask if they have a program for cat food and litter for cheaper. Explain how much you love your cat.
If you don't have some kind of water bill, long hot baths. With a library book in hand.
Anyone who harps on you or bugs you about your current state is not helping. Drop them until things get better.
My best wishes for you.

So what are you saying? Nuke the mid-east oil fields? And that would accomplish what?
No, that's not the way to go.

"Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof." Truer words never spoken by Paul, there. Today's troubles are to be taken care of today, not tomorrow, but they are today's worries only. Tomorrow's problems will belong to tomorrow. That may not seem very helpful in this day and age of financial obligations, but it will keep you sane, and you may be surprised at what a few incremental successes can do for you.

Hey, I'm writing a novel. I start the second draft next week. It's my second job; it just hasn't paid me yet. So that's something.
Like I said before, reductions make for a much stronger end product. I just have to keep that in mind while I'm picking at my beanie-weenies-sans-weenie. :-)

As you get older all of those sweet things don't appeal to you very much.
One gets a LOT of sugar in things you pruchase. Look at a bottle of tea. How many calories? How many calories in a teaspoon of sugar? (15) 250/15 is a whole lot more than I would put in two cups of tea.

Can you recall any incident where a conservative threw an object at someone he disagreed with?
The Adrian jerk I paraphrased had a list of "good" pie attacks etc. such as against Coulter to defend his position. Although he missed the Bush shoe-thrower for some reason.
