Story over at Fox

BambiÂ’s latest outrage.  He is declassifying millions of pages of documents from the cold war in the sprit of “openness”.  In the past agencies have been against this because it reveals sources and methods as well as potentially revealing current agents.  But does Bambi give a shit???  Probably yes, he is doing this to cause harm. There is no other explanation for his actions.

Human error, although the involvement of an El Al jet makes me think raaaaaaaacist thoughts.

Heard about that one on the radio this am. Anyone know the implications of this? Have head about the possibility of the "poles flipping" in the past but can't remember what the after effects, if any (aside from screwing up compasses), are.

9 Some of the effects of a magnetic pole shift:

1. Reduced magnetic field strength.
2. Many local magnetic anomalies.
3. Local geomagnetic storms.
4. Increased solar radiation (particle).

It's really bad, except when it saves the day.

11 Old Sailor: What does that mean in practical terms? Will things not work, or will they work better, or will we all be flung off into space to collide with the newly summoned meteor?

12 Partial transcript of Cheney comments I picked up at the end of the Overnight thread:

Former Vice President Dick Cheney accused President Barack Obama on Tuesday of “trying to pretend we are not at war” with terrorists, pointing to the White House response to the attempted sky bombing as reflecting a pattern that includes banishing the term “war on terror” and attempting to close the Guantanamo Bay detention center.

“[W]e are at war and when President Obama pretends we aren’t, it makes us less safe,” Cheney said in a statement to POLITICO. “Why doesn’t he want to admit we’re at war? It doesn’t fit with the view of the world he brought with him to the Oval Office. It doesn’t fit with what seems to be the goal of his presidency – social transformation—the restructuring of American society.”

13 It means your DNA will mutate more often, Joanna.  And during a local particle storm, you won't want to stay outside for long.  Plus, all your magnetic compasses won't work (but fiber-optic gyro's will).  Most of our satellites will fail.  In short, unpredictable havoc will result which could last from dozens to thousands of years, according to the geological evidence I've read.

Posted by: Old Sailor at December 30, 2009 05:29 AM (/Ft4q)

14 One aspect of a magnetic reversal is that there will be a period when the earth's magnetic field is weakened.  This will allow increased cosmic rays to enter the earth's atmosphere.

The poles have periodically reversed throughout geologic time.  The records of this are on the sea floor, where bands of magma with iron content show alternating orientation to north or south.

I am not expert enough in computers and electronics to know how much a reversal would mess up communications, GPS, electrical grids,  etc.

Posted by: Miss Marple at December 30, 2009 05:30 AM (4DwVn)

15 Anything said about the effects of pole reversal is strictly conjecture. Man has never witnessed one in modern recorded history. We just don't know what the effects will be. Conjecture ranges from not much to global catastrophe.

17 4. Increased solar radiation (particle).

From a magenetic shift on the Earth?  Do the new fields attract particles that are currently flying on by?

All I remember from third-semester physics is the right-hand rule.   But I got a B+.

Posted by: HeatherRadish at December 30, 2009 05:36 AM (NtiET)

18 The overall field breaks up into many weak, rapidly moving ones, thereby allowing a full assault on the earth's atmosphere by all particles (protons, electrons, cosmic rays, etc.).

I read it too. what a very very weak analogy.  Cleaning up a mess caused by nature has NOTHING to do with a sorry as man made terror attack completely missed by "Big Sis"

Somehow, it's Bush's fault the hurricane hit a democrat hell hole run by idiots who don't even know how to get on a bus.

But, it's not Obama's fault HIS dept of state didn't pass on the warning from his dad to the TSA?

Vic, I'm not even sure his college records count. At least not at this point. The man appears to be out of his league, and can only try to speechify to try to cover his own short-comings. That is already getting old, even to the MSM.

Oh, and as it snows again and again here in the continental US, I wonder what the temp is in Hawaii?

I would be more interested in his admission records, financial aid records, and release of any disertations that he had made. The grades awarded an affirmative action candidate are worthless therefore I wouldn't waste my time looking at them.

I don't think the college would have those. Overseas travel records should be available via a FOI to the State Dept.
