On December 26, two days after Nigerian Omar Abdulmutallab allegedly attempted to use underwear packed with plastic explosives to blow up the Amsterdam-to-Detroit flight he was on, and as it became clear internally that the Administration had suffered perhaps its most embarrassing failure in the area of national security, senior Obama White House aides, including chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, David Axelrod and new White House counsel Robert Bauer, ordered staff to begin researching similar breakdowns -- if any -- from the Bush Administration.

NEBRASKA 33 - ARIZONA 0
Seems I recal someone yesterday predicting Az. by 4 (count 'em, 4) touchdowns. I reminded them that the "black shirts" (Nebraska's vaunted defense of years past) were back.
No applause please, this was an easy call. Big 12 vs Pac 10. I mean, come on.

this showed up in my inbox today - I don't know where it started.
MIKE LEACH AND A FEW GOOD MEN
Gerald Meyers (Tech AD): *Coach Leach, did you order the Code Shed?*
Kent Hance: You *donÂ’t* have to answer that question!
Coach Leach: IÂ’ll answer the question!
[to Meyers]
Coach Leach: You want answers?
Meyers: I think IÂ’m entitled.
Coach Leach: *You want answers?*
Meyers: *I want the truth!*
Coach Leach: *YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!!!*
[pauses]
Coach Leach: Son, we live in a world that has sidelines, and those sidelines have to be guarded by pirates with swords. Whose gonna do it? You? You, Meyers? I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for James, and you curse the Pirates. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That JamesÂ’s small shed, while tragic, probably saved games. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves games. You donÂ’t want the truth because deep down in places you donÂ’t talk about at parties with your fat little girlfriends, you want me on those sidelines, you need me on those sidelines We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very bowl games that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide them. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a sword, and stand a post. Either way, I donÂ’t give a damn what you think you are entitled to.
Meyers: Did you order the Code Shed?
Coach Leach: I did the job IÂ…
Meyers: *Did you order the Code Shed?*
Coach Leach: *YouÂ’re G**damned right I did!*

a decade is a unit of measure, it measures 10 years.
Soooooo ooooooo,
You, or Gabe, could say "the last decade" and mean "going back the last ten years", which would take you to December 31, 1999 - when we were all filling our bathtubs with water in case the water distribution center shut-down and you could stay in Vegas for $20 because people thought the planes would fall out of the sky.
Now we've got 2012 to worry about.
....
Oh, and a cohort is 100 Roman troops, lead by a centurion.
and to decimate something is to reduce its strength by 1/10th

Unbelievable. We release a jackal with our boys' blood on his hands in a prisoner exchange for some pansy Brit who probably got himself captured walking away from his post to take a leak. We should have tortured and killed this POS and then swapped them his body. Reconciliation my ass. You reconcile a war zone by swapping more or less innocent people who were forced into fighting by factional alliances, not by releasing mass murderers to kill again.

How in the hell did Nebraska manage 33 points? Let me guess:
- interception return for TD (7-0)
- fumble return for TD (14-0)
- recovered fumble on 1 yard line, converted 4th and goal (21-0)
- safety (23-0)
- interception returned to the 5 yard line, kicked 51 yard FG (26-0)
- 83-yard TD pass where Zac Lee throws the ball right to the field corner, who fails to catch it. Ball pops up in the air, bounces off the head of the free safety as he gets hit by the strong safety, caught by Nebraska receiver and taken for a TD (33-0)

Who are the "we" in that sentence? You, Gabe and Life magazine? Intellectual laziness is no reason for acting retarded -- and neither is the fact that you already wrote your Top 10 lists and now would feel stupid acknowledging that you're publishing them only nine years into a decade. I hope everything really cool in this decade winds up happening in 2010 just to fuck with you guys.

Gabe is not bad at math, he explained earlier why he will consider 2010 as the start of a new decade. What's more '10 is not Year Zero, it is simply the start of a decade that has numbers beginning with 1. I know, numerical pedants will have my guts for garters now.

Well, yeah, but you just built the fallacious premise that the last decade started in 2000 right into your argument. That's like saying that if I start with the premise that all cars are green and then exclude anything that looks and acts like a car merely because it's not green, then voila!, every car out there is now green.
This is a classic example of "begging the question," as the expression is properly used, or should "we" all start using the phrase begging the question when what we mean is that a question really needs to be asked merely because that's what 99% of everyone else is doing, even though it's wrong?

Happy Last Day of the Decade!
(General agreement with your definition of a decade as well as its start and end dates and your assessment of those who need to take exception to these generally accepted meanings. Except for the 1980s. The 80s freaking rocked, baby. That decade was so big that you couldn't cram it into a ten-year span. Fifteen is more like it. That most glorious decade began with the release of Van Halen's debut album in 1978 and ran roughly until the time Z-Rock started playing Weezer.)

I'm not southern I was born and raised in Ohio, lol but I'm from good German stock so it's always kraut on New Years and the black eyed peas and cornbread is for the hubby who says he's from the south even though he's born and raised in WV where we live now go figure.
That makes sense. I know the cornbread and black eyed peas being southern but I couldn't figure out how the sauerkraut got in that meal. Our Easter meal is ham and sauerkraut and something we call cidek but everybody else calls hrutka.

Good lord I don't know how many times I've seen this arguement. How long ago was it? Let me count down on my fingers. 10,9 8,7,6, and I have five more fingers so that makes 11yrs ago.
Ahhh, fuck it. I'm gonna go with the absinthe.

Going out with the fam tonight for dinner, and then back home to set off fireworks and shoot silly string all around the neighborhood and stuff. Then I'll come home, have a drink to toast the New Year and new decade, and go to bed. Exciting stuff, yep.

X @ 144: Has anyone ever heard of "the century between 1850 and 1950"? No? Because there's no such fucking thing.
Hispanic Heritage Month goes from September 15 to October 15. It's the same principle.
