Value-addition by subtraction. [krakatoa]
— Open Blog

Is it a "trick" if you just ignore all the other thermometers?

Or is is fraud?

via WUWT, Jeff Id at the Air Vent (validating the work done by Save Capitalism -- get that? A peer reviewed blog post) explains how the all-important GHCN data was massaged for the Antarctic. According to a study based on these numbers, the Antarctic is warming at a rate of 4 degrees celsius per century.

Reminiscent of Briffa and his magic Yamal tree, GHCN used one temperature sensor location to represent an entire continent.

Let that sink in. One thermometer in one location is what GHCN has used to report the temperature history of the entire continent of Antarctica.

Now I'm going to ask you to go out on a limb, and guess whether this station was on the high or low-end of temperature change.

In the meantime, the BAS maintains an up to date, value added dataset of their own. Using 63 stations and simple area weighted averaging we get antarctic trends of 0.05 C/decade...

Currently the ‘homogenized’ value added version of GHCN has a trend that is EIGHT times higher than actual for the ENTIRE ANTARCTIC CONTINENT.

Check out the post at WUWT for a compilation of graph's & pics of the magical temperature station's "pristine" location.

UPDATE: Typos fixed. At least I got chicken.

One thermometer in one location is what GHCN has used to report the temperature history of the entire continent of Antarctica.

Yeah, Chrichton addressed this tactic in State of Fear where he showed the Warmists using one particular point in Antarctica that was losing ice and claimed it was representative of the entire continent. But the fact was that the continent, as a whole, was gaining ice.

Is that right? I think I remember it that way.

It would seem if the “Team” was going to get creative with adjustments they would have done so where they got the most value — when a crooked shopkeeper is going to put his thumb on the scale he does it for the fish, not the potatoes. 19 @12 Jean:
Short answer: No.

The issue is the extreme paucity of data leads to a whole lot of infilling and 'spreading' the influence of individual thermometers. So it isn't a simple job to just sort thermometers by relative weight in the overall plot. (Although, I agree, that would rock.)

A thermometer might be used to help adjust a temperature 2000km away - or it might not even reach 50% importance in measuring temperature right next to it. And it fluctuates widely case-by-case.

27 If we think this thru, can this AGW crap be a big win for America? Lets assume they cobble something together in Copenhagen, call it Kyoto II - with even more bling for the third world elites, but a longer timeline term for the first world. First, it goes nowhere in the US Senate. Second, the EPAs attempts to screw us get tied up in court forever. Thus, if EU businesses want to stay competitive they will need to migrate operations to the US or any other scab (China, India, etc) that doesn't sign on. Moving operations (or starting new ones) to the US is a lot more attractive then China - so could the US gain jobs at the EU's expense.

86 Are there any more good scientists? That's an interesting question. The communists have been actively infiltrating the educational system for the past 50 years or so. It has been my experience that the hard sciences and engineering were still populated by fairly conservative people, but that may have changed since I was in school. To be objective precludes being a leftist, as too much real life data must be willfully distorted or ignored to make reality jibe with a leftist world view. So I could not answer that question with any personal certainty. I cannot recall many real scientific breakthroughs coming out of Communist countries since WWII. As independent thought was punishable by death or other method. When leftists take everything over, civilisation will pretty much stagnate , fall to a level of acceptable poverty and become an intellectual wasteland. They will call it a worker's paradise...
