War Porn: Instant Gunship
— Ace

The Marines don't want to specifically buy AC-130 gunships. They have a lot of KC-130J tankers -- the same basic plane as the "Spooky" -- so they're arming up their tankers on the fly to turn them into gunships as needed.

They're adding the Spooky's cannon, the Bushmaster MK44. Here's video of it, or, actually, an upgraded 30mm version of it with airburst capability.

Thanks to rdbrewer.

C-130 is like 30years old, making it a spooky? Costs nothing. So the marines are Presidential rigging a tanker.

Sad, does cost benefit work at the Pentagon?

Presumably they don't fly a re-purposed C-130 tanker into battle with its refueling tanks filled with kerosene. Just a guess.

Actually, maybe they could fill the tanks with fire retardent. Win! Stops a bullet, puts out a fire, rains an unpleasant liquid on the enemy in case of a hit.

True enough. I worked with the Montana ANG in 1987 when they transitioned from F-106's to F-16's. At the same time, they changed their C-131 to a C-130A. I can't remember the tail number but it was from the mid 1950's. It was an old bird in 1987.

C-130J is a NEW bird - They reused the basic concept but it is new design.

It can be recognized by the longer fuselage and scimitar shaped turbo-prop blades.

I think the idea is that building several types of pallets that can be rolled on to a C-130 and bolted down gives the USMC an option (and possibly a way around much brass) that they don't have now.

A pallet version with a Mk44 and 5000 rounds (maybe more), and maybe a 7.62mm Minigun for backup, makes a lot of sense, particularly one that takes up only the front third of the cargo bay.  It gives the aircraft a chance to do something about ground problems nearby.  Local air-superiority is implicit.

I don't know if the tanker version has removable tanks. There's talk about a pod mount, but this gun looks a bit big (certainly with recoil) for a wimg mount. This may be a generic C-130 option.

86 The Marines would love to own and operate a squadron of AC-130Us. Hell, the Air Force wants more.

The problem is, they are extraordinarily expensive airplanes. There's a hell of a lot more to a dedicated AC-130 than strapping some guns to the side. They have some of the very finest sensors and some pretty fine jamming equipment aboard.

How much does a U-Boat cost? More than an F-22 by some accounts.

So the Marines are never gonna be able to afford them. But if they can generate a low-cost system to provide some level of persistent close support for troops in contact, they can live with that.

Here's a little background on gunships:

98 Darth @ 67: It was "Military Industrial Complex" and there was a lot of unethical shit going down back then. It's considerably cleaned up since that time, although Boeing seems to have slipped once or twice.

#20 "Maybe it's just me, but arming and taking a flying gas tank into heavy ground fire areas sounds like a recipe for disaster".

The 3500 gal refueling tank rolls out to convert the bird into cargo/paratroop configuration.  Marines had F and R models when I got out of these units in '77, Wish we had fun toys like the spooky when I was in.  These platforms won't operate until you establish air superiority in that area.  What a great close air support asset.
