— Dave in Texas

The PRC calls it "The June 4th Incident". We call it "the Tiananmen Square Massacre".

June 4th Incident.bmp

Candlelight vigil in Hong Kong's Victoria Park

There is no (available to the world) record of the number of protesters killed, but the Soviets estimated 3,000. At the time there was widespread international condemnation expressed against the People's Republic of China for their brutal response to the protests.

You know. The kind of widespread international condemnation that Israel gets a couple of times a week now.

5 I remember speaking with a very old woman (probably in her late 80s) just after the Chinese murdered so many of their own. This astute woman was crushed by the events, and I tried to convince her with my stupid analysis of the situation that the Chinese people would change their government sooner rather than later. Unfortunately I was completely incorrect.

As damian pointed out, it's the money that the Chinese care about. Freedom isn't even close.

Also, in that same year we witnessed thousands of East Germans tearing down a physical barrier that had seperated them from their families and fellow countrymen for decades thanks to the efforts of Ronaldus Magnus. What a great time to be alive, magic was in the air, everything was electric.

Now, with the failure and disgrace we have elected to sit in the nations highest seat, not so much.

20 "Money and strategic balance of power trumped freedom."

No, they trumped democracy. Freedom is something else again. The Chinese middle class had, and has, about as much freedom as we do.

Also, these protestors didn't speak for the majority of Chinese. Somebody obeyed the orders to fire on the crowd. "Somebody" would be the troops. Who were those troops? They were peasants who joined up from rural areas. THAT's the voice of China: believers in the Mandate of Heaven.

So the demonstrators were a minority faction in China, but had the well-wishers of the majority of one of China's biggest rivals (the US, and the West in general).

Normally you just tell a rowdy minority faction "get out of here, you're bothering us", but this bunch chose to challenge the legitimacy of the sovereign authorities. "Some people... you just cain't reach"

We have an example in Yeltsin's Russia, and in China's past history: ineffectual central control, widescale corruption, warlordism, Islamist riots in Chinese Turkestan, and after about five years of this a stronger - and bloodier - reaction against democracy.

The Chinese response was Macchiavellian: thousands dead now to prevent hundreds of thousands dead later

Posted by: The Dread Pirate Neck Beard at June 05, 2010 06:31 AM (wOtDN)

57 I can think of three parallels.

The Kent State protesters had reason to believe that the American people at large would be sympathetic to armed protest. It had, after all, worked for them in Columbia and Cornell. The Tiananmen protesters saw the liberalisation of China relative to the early 1970s. They bet that the Chinese people were like their friends in the "international community" - i.e., American idealists, and would be sympathetic to a peaceful sit-in.

In both cases, their ideals - if implemented - would have brought down disaster.

In both cases, they hit the limit of the authorities' tolerance.

I know this was tongue in cheek. But it reminded me of how tired I am of the "america is fat" mantra from the euro-trash and the libtards. America is fat because they can be. We have food to eat and cars to drive which run on relatively inexpensive gas. We also drive because America is large-we don't have to live and work on top or each other.

Someone was just telling me last night that the entire world of the merchant marine crews want to be on american ships because they are the only ones that provide enough food.

I'm suspicious of this pro-skeleton agenda and the food police. I tend to think it's a ploy to get americans used to not having "plenty" and having govt mandated "enough".

My father commanded the Ohio Nat Guard unit that was relieved by the unit that did the shooting.  The guys that came in had just spent several days putting down a prison riot, IIRC.  They were tired.  No excuses, but the old man was afraid it was going to go bad while he was there.  The hippies were throwing rocks, chunks of sharpened rebar, shit like that.

There was some dipshit that made a career of being shot in the hand there that came to speak at Miami U while I was there.  In the Q and A I asked him if he was one of the people that tried to kill my dad with a piece of sharpened steel.  He stuttered something stupid while I was booed by the audience.  Then I asked him if he ever got a job.  The advice that there was a barber right here in town was drowned in a chorus of applause, oddly, as the folks with common sense out shouted the hippies.

93 This event marked the point where the Chinese government was shocked into realizing traditional communism was not going to be able to continue because the horse was already out of the barn out in the street.

In effect, it was the last dying gasp of Maoism, and the birth of the somewhat chaotic freewheeling (economically) authoritarian oligarchy (politically) they have today.

With 20 years hindsight (as bad as it seemed at the time), this is when China took a major step in its developmental evolution.

Historically, revolts don't happen so much under ultra-repressive regimes because internal state apparatus is very efficient at squashing dissent in its infancy, they happen when those regimes loosen up a bit and things start to improve (thus demonstrating to the populace that things can get better), but aren't improving as fast as the populace thinks they should.

Because it would take a ready, willing, and able Congress to radically alter the rules of the Civil Service Commission and there would be a firestorm of protest.  First and foremost, every person employed by the US Government should be employed at will, and subject to termination just as in the private sector.

It will take a wholesale change in Congress with citizen legislators in place to change this decades long concept.  Same goes for College tenure.  Fuck all  of 'um and make them subject to the same rules as the civil work force.

161 72:  +1 - its one of the left's memes that Americans should learn to love having less of everything.  When Elian Gonzalez got sent back to Cuba the "affable Eva Braun of morning TV" (h/t Coulter) Couric talked about how kids in Cuba are happier than kids in the US because they enjoy their stick-ball more than our kids love X-Boxes.  (Note that Katie did not move her kids to Cuba, apparently because she doesn't like them being happy).  Obama made a comment earlier this week at some college to the effect that those who chase materialism show a poverty of ambition.  (Note that Obama and his wife have not given away any of their own booty-loads of cash, apparently because they aren't very ambitious after all).

The Al Gore part writes itself - I'll leave that to you.  Suffice it to say that the person who wants you to learn to live with less of anything generally won't be giving up their own largesse to lead by example.

The demographics you are shoveling are straight out of Lenin.  China is a Communist dictatorship because it was taken over by Communists, not because of its economics, social "stratification" or what the hell ever else.  I heard the same bullshit in PoliSci 20 years ago about Vietnam, Cuba, Nicaragua and every other country that Marxists had coup'd and junta'd their way into.

The fact that a county has social strife or economic problems makes it ripe for revolution by dedicated groups of Marxist fanatics.  Communism isn't some kind of evolutionary step in governance - it's the political equivalent of a virus.  Some countries have better "immune systems" but no country is fated to be Communist unless it's allowed to happen (e.g. the virus goes "untreated.")

177 kids in Cuba are happier than kids in the US because they enjoy their stick-ball more than our kids love X-Boxes.

Last year the Baseball Museum at Cooperstown had an exhibition of photographs from Cuba.  Some of the kids were smiling for the camera, or because they hit a home run...but baseball is escapism.  And there was a bias selection...they didn't show the kids who broke fingers catching without a mitt, or their dirty shoeless feet, or the gov't food ration they had for dinner when they went home.

I wasn't impressed.

180 Hell, the Catholic schools system has the "homeless" shelters (sorry but I hate using fake language. Schizophrentic/addict shelters) well staffed through community service requirements. My boys, once they hit a certain age, were required to provide service to the schizophrentic/addicts as a graduation requirement. It actually had the opposite effect, because after working there, they no longer believed the "down on one's luck" scenario. In fact, after being attacked in the parking lot for being a racist---he didn't have any cash on him to give to them--he's over that too.

188 Don't think of it as a massacre, think of it as a tea party.  Seriously.  With democracy, China would be in debt, taxes would be higher, crime would be higher, they'd be forced to teach children fisting in schools, there'd be affirmative action...where's the win?

Is there a single person here who thinks the American govt is doing a better job than the Chinese govt?  On anything?

If bashing a few thousand hippies was the price to pay for the astonishing job the govt' has done over the past 21 years then perhaps it was a small price to pay.

You know what democracy gets you?  Hugo Chavez.  A demagogue promising free shit to the masses.  Absent a large middle class this happens in every country.

As the saying goes, "timing is everything!"

The chief executive of BP sold £1.4 million of his shares in the fuel giant weeks before the Gulf of Mexico oil spill caused its value to collapse.

Tony Hayward cashed in about a third of his holding in the company one month before a well on the Deepwater Horizon rig burst, causing an environmental disaster.

Since he disposed of 223,288 shares on March 17, the company’s share price has fallen by 30 per cent. About £40 billion has been wiped off its total value.

Yes, as I said earlier, I am rather skeptical of the cadmium scare. I am waiting for the new government regulations, the takeover of an American company, and the boost in profits to another American company to be the outcome of this “outrage.”

IIRC, the dangers of cadmium are pretty well established.  Which begs the question as to why these pigments were used in glasses.  That's actively stupid.

280 But see here's the thing.  Cadmium is already regulated up the wazoo.  The EPA has set very low limits on the amount of cadmium a business can discharge in the air or water.  Any business using cadmium in an industrial process like making pigments for drinking glasses would be subject to these rules.  So the next time your liberal friends come up to you and say "see see - McDonald's sells CADMIUM - that's why we need MORE REGULATION!!!!1!!!!!!!!" - just explain this to them.

Posted by: a concerned boo berry at June 05, 2010 10:16 AM (Vxayp)

296 PGiS, I imagine what probably happened is that this McDonald's drinking-glass company bought some pigment from some other company but didn't do due diligence as to what's in the pigment.  I doubt it was intentional either.

The danger from cadmium comes from two sources: 1. It can leach out and get into your beverage, where it replaces other metals in enzymes and causes them to turn off. 2. Some naturally occurring isotopes are radioactive with long half-lives so you will be exposed to slightly higher-than-background radiation.

You could use one of these painted glasses or the rest of your life and not have any appreciable cadmium in your system.
1 ) It is in a paint on the outside of the glass.
2 ) If you scraped all the paint off and immediately ate it you then should not do   so to the next 3 glasses and you will be fine.
3) You inhale more heavy metals in a dust storm than you will by using this glass for the rest of your life.

308 As I have said many times on these threads since the oil spill the way regulations are passed and enforced in this country they only keep honest people honest.

Well, yeah.  The idea behind EPA regulations in particular is that if the EPA makes it so onerous to use a particular toxic substance, that people will naturally try to avoid using it in order to avoid the onerous rules and thereby switch to something less harmful.  But all of that presumes that people are interested in following the law in the first place.

“Our childrenÂ’s health should not depend on the consciences of anonymous sources.  Although McDonaldÂ’s did the right thing by recalling these products, we need stronger testing standards to ensure that all childrenÂ’s products are proven safe before they hit the shelves," said Speier.  “Cadmium is a toxic substance that is extremely dangerous to the developmental health of children.”

Posted by: The Dread Pirate Neck Beard at June 05, 2010 10:30 AM (wOtDN)

317 But all of that presumes that people are interested in following the law in the first place.

The problem is the way they go about "passing" them and then how they are enforced. The EPA limits are set insanely low on most thins with zero scientific evidence for the level they set it at.  This is done by the zealots who graduate from college and head straight to the EPA with the idea of shutting down "evil business" or "saving the earth from mother rapers.

That however is defeated by the enforcement arm. 99% of the time the regulations are enforced by auditing paperwork. That is when an audit is done at all.

What happens is that Joe Honest company gets the shit fined out of him because he failed to complete and maintain slot 192 in form zxy that involved him moving a pile of SiO2 which was classified as hazardous because he had over a ton of it in one pile.

Meanwhile Al Crooked company puts lead in interior paint and cadmium in the drinking glasses and has a ton of paperwork certifying all requirements are met.

326 Vic, well I wouldn't say there is "zero scientific evidence" for EPA's limits, but they do tend to be skewed towards "overly cautious" rather than "reasonably safe".  And yes enforcement is mainly through paper shuffling.  The EPA does do "random" lab inspections & effluent testing & the like, but you generally get a heads-up in one way or another before the tests occur (i.e., "we haven't been inspected in 5 years, the last inspection was 5 years ago, so we'd better play it straight for a month or so").  Or, better yet, you can get a clue if you have some sense of the political currents of the EPA administration in your particular district, what types of violations they are currently looking for.  Air quality violations?  Water quality violations?  Heavy metals?  Organic carcinogens?  That sort of thing.  If you're in an industry that isn't on the current shit-list-of-the-day then you can breathe a little easier.  Regulations are NOT enforced consistently or transparently mainly because they are overseen by ladder-climbing lawyer-politico types who want to make a name for themselves as defending "the environment" (think Eliot Spitzer in a lab coat).

331 Regulations are NOT enforced consistently or transparently mainly because they are overseen by ladder-climbing lawyer-politico types who want to make a name for themselves as defending "the environment" (think Eliot Spitzer in a lab coat).

That is the same reason that the limits are not set "scientifically". A prime example is when the limit for Arsenic was reduced to those really stupid low levels at the end of the Clinton adm. There was zero evidence that those new limits were needed. That level was chosen because they new that nobody in the country had monitoring equipment that would measure to that level.

This would force Bush to rescind the order and they could then paint him as "anti-environment".  What really pissed me off besides the obvious BS with the EPA is that this was one of those things that Bush never responded to and the press eat his ass..

341 I don't suppose any of you live near a "Biscuitville" restaurant? There's one nearby, and I stopped there once. Holy God, the coffee was terrible and the gray-gravy-soaked breakfast biscuits that seem to be their mainstay reminded me of the plastic vomit of my youth. The egg, sausage, etc. biscuit I had was terrible. The biscuit itself was dessicated, the other stuff was lukewarm and sloppy. I'd never heard of the chain before, and I can only hope that they're not too widespread.

344 Vic, actually that's not true - a properly equipped analytical laboratory can measure arsenic down to the 10 ppb range which is what the new standard calls for.  Actually, use of standard ASTM methods can reliably detect arsenic down to 5 ppb.  I agree that the decision was politically motivated because there isn't a lot of evidence that 10 ppb is better necessarily than 50 ppb, and it's hard to make the intellectual case of why having more arsenic in water isn't necessarily an awful thing, but difficulty in measurement isn't one of the reasons.

No Biscuitvile's around here -- the one Bob Evans is only for people who like risking food poisoning, and the Waffle House is the only place where I've gotten a cup of coffee with an inch of grease on the top.

Bush rescinded it for 60 or 90 days in order to review the rule change. During that time the MFM went nuts, accusing Bush of -- get this -- adding arsenic to the drinking water.

The problem was that most water treatment plants in the nation did not have the capability. They don't maintain permanent chemists and rely more on in-line instrumentation.

Posted by: Vic at June 05, 2010 03:08 PM (6taRI)

The problem was that the places where arsenic levels exceeded the stricter standard were mostly served by small, rural water treatment plants that couldn't meet the new standard without an extensive, expensive upgrade. The science said that the new standard would result in a decreased death rate of about three per 100,000. It was a useless rule -- but a great dirty trick by Clinton on his way out.

416 Tell me about it -- and I've got one kid over and the other one a big probable...and this administration does not inspire much faith.

The Turks and the Sauds would greenlight an attack on Iran under a few conditions: they can't be seen in any way supporting it; it mustn't be nuclear (or at least minimal nuclear exchange -- fallout would be a real bitch); it must succeed.  So a strike on Iran would be greenlighted; the problem for Israel is not the strike itself, but keeping their flanks and back protected while they do so during and after -- and that's where the U.S. is supposed to come in...but...

427 Cracker Barrel is pretty consistent.  Of course, the last time I went I was the only under-60 woman there under 300 pounds (and I'm not THAT much under 300 pounds), so I'm reconsidering its place in my life.

We have those all around as well. They are pretty good and my wife really loves them. The problems is that every time I go by one the parking lot is overflowing and there is a one hour wait just to get to the table.

I think they design those to be that way so you have ample opportunity to browse through their connect shop full over way over-priced stuff.

Hell no, even if we pulled out completely and left them on their own they would all kill each other. Most in the middle east even the Arab shia do not identify with the Iranian shia Persians and especially not the sunni. They both look upon each other as apostates. Iraq fought a nasty 8 year war with Iran where human wave attacks and chemical weapons were the norm. Something like over a million dead between the two sides and about  250,0000 permanently disabled from mustard and nerve gas on the Iranian side.

She's got Khombat Pay for her first choice (on registrations you have to put down at least 2 choices, and the registry picks from there -- and it's a bit of a tradition to name the foal using part of dad's name), seeing as how she paid for him to get born out of her combat pay.  One of her buddies told her to put down "Kherev", which I hope doesn't mean anything untoward, because it sounds kinda cool (but if it means something like "goat fucker" or "alpo" or even "peanut butter sandwich" then, no).

But you'll have to ask Mrs. D'oh about what defines a 'yankee' in the Deep South.

As to what the "deep South" is, if you go with the first series of States to secede that is pretty much it.  A Yenkee to most people in the "deep South" is anyone from North of the Mason Dixon line.

Technically a Yankee is someone from the New England States.

Chucky surprisingly is taking Israel's side. He's taking a swipe at Tim Blair because Tim did what Comic Book Johnson always does and pointed out the nasty anti Israel comments in the comments, and Tim said Chucky is OK with them because they're by his new lefty friends.

Chucky's justification doesn't hold, because it's a slam dunk if he really had a problem with the anti Isreal comments the ban hammer would drop in a microsecond.

I got one thing to say to "Sir Paul" and that is "SHUT THE F*CK UP YOU MISERABLE EUROTRASH POS!" We Americans kicked your British asses not once, but TWICE 200 years ago, and if we hadn't come to your rescue in the 20th century you'd be chomping on sausage, swilling beer, and rocking out to "Deuchland Uber Alles" while burning synagogues and vandalizing Jewish gravesites. Well, except for the Deuchland Uber Alles thing you do all that sh*t anyway- so I guess we wasted our time.

Palestine Investment Conference generates $655M for economic development

WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) — France, Italy, and the United States pledged a combined $655M for the development of the Palestinian private sector during the Palestine Investment Conference, the U.S. State Department said on Saturday.

This is part of the economic development policy that will save or create millions of green jobs. If you don't want to move to the Gaza Strip to take the job, that's your problem, not mine

You are so right, I just assumed the "goddam" was implicit and everyone pronounced it that way.  Forgot some of them goddam yankees might be reading the site.  My mistake.

Unfortunately, a lot of the best and the brightest over there died off in the two world wars that were fought last century. What was left were the pacifist liberal scum.

That is in no way intended to denigrate the fine men and women of the British military who fight beside us. Just saying, the majority of the mindset of the country as a whole.

535 Dang - over 500 comments and still nothing on Nikki Haley. Who here is going to make the ultimate sacrifice to science and prove Knotts' Law? ...d'oh... My one and only Palmettohead Pal emailed me last night that the entire State is waiting for the next shot in the siege on Fort Haley, figuring there's still lots more powder in the rino horns, and his inbox is full of hot rumors. His money's split between one that's come up over the last couple of days, of the Haley kids being actually love children of a secret "raghead" relationship, because they don't look at all like "Dad", and the bi thing that's been around for weeks. I can't see that second one getting put about simply because it's so inconsistent with the two allegations of hetero affairs, but maybe sometime Monday so there's no time to push back. So tonight or sometime tomorrow expect the "secret love children" meme.
