30 Days [ArthurK]
— Open Blogger

If this whole TSA/Scanner/Pat-Down business had started 30 days earlier, in October instead of November, how would the Nov 2nd elections have turned out?

Discuss.

1 GOP would have picked up 1 or maybe 2 more seats. Not THAT different.

2 Frist!

3 Democrat gains instead of losses because the TSA would have been able to find thousands of voting machines lost in the crotches of air travelers.

Posted by: ef at November 24, 2010 07:59 AM (c7Pp2)

4 Don't think it would have made much difference. Any government drone under any regime could have handled this as badly as Nappy and her gropers.

5 I am shocked at how easily the American public seems to accept the TSA.  It is depressing.

6 Maybe the Alaska vote would have dumped Lisa Pukowski in favor of Miller. Babs Boxer gets re-elected in CA even if she's convicted of drinking baby blood. O'Donnell loses, too.

Posted by: trentk269 at November 24, 2010 08:02 AM (Uda+9)

7 It is an interesting question actually.

The people that have to fly the most - mid to high level business people - did massively switch from Democrat to Republican in the last election anyway, so we wouldn't have gotten much more out of that group.

Out of the Democrat base it might have motivated a few people who actually care about "civil liberties" to stay home...but as with Gitmo we've actually seen that they in fact don't care about "civil liberties".

So my guess is little change really. The average union goon or federal bureaucrat isn't likely to vote against the gravy train just because their leaders now demand they submit to a little gate-rape when they fly.

Posted by: 18-1 at November 24, 2010 08:02 AM (7BU4a)

8 You mean that had they started doing the gate-rapes earlier, O'donnell  would've won, Murkowski would be filing for unemployment, and Reid and Pelosi would be writing their memoirs?

Child, please...

House seats, not Senate seats, I should clarify.

10 runningrn - I don't think the Roman Emperor's traveled much, they made everyone come to them.  Maybe we should consider that model - it is one of the justifications for keeping the UN in the US.

So all this invasion of one's privacy and body cavities are obviously Bush's fault.

Yes!!!

It's all part of how Bush trampled and shedded the Constitution. First he trampled it, getting it all wet and wrinkled and dirty. Then he shredded it, but he jammed the shredder because the Constitution was in no shape to run through the shedder after all the trampling. So the government had to get new shredders, and then it had to hire a bunch of people to manually shred the Constitution by hand with scissors and Xacto blades. This is how Bush grew the government and the annual deficits.

And that's how we got into the mess we're in.

So interesting that all this ramped up at the heaviest travel time of the year...

Posted by: RushBabe at November 24, 2010 08:06 AM (a3Z62)

13 I don't think it would have changed much.  The outrage is bi-partisan (or, non-partisan).  People who are not bothered it are also from both ends of the spectrum -- you have the Progressives who think this is a criticism of Obama at one end (hence, they want their junk groped to prove how loyal they are) and the security-minded conservatives on the other end.

If there had been an organized effort by the GOP to show how this stuff is part and parcel of the nanny state Dem agenda, maybe it'd have helped us, but nothing suggests the GOP had its act together to capitalize on something like this.

Oh, and, still no cooking thread.  Isn't time running out?

14 Are you suggesting the Obama Administration conspired to delay the TSA Groping policy until after the election, to mitigate damage to the party?

23 No difference. What's one more turd in the punch bowl? Hell, anyone stupid enough to vote for him in the last election isn't going to be persuaded by a few old women being assaulted in the air ports.

24 So interesting that all this ramped up at the heaviest travel time of the year...

It's bizarre. Did they get credible threats of crotch bombs, or is this just standard "don't just stand there, do something!" bureaucratic overreach?

The DHS's website, for whatever little it's worth, doesn't indicate any change in threat level since ... 2006 !? Someone forget to update that thing?

Posted by: Waterhouse at November 24, 2010 08:13 AM (5iNtI)

25 Republicans didn't do as well as all the polls and pundits were expecting because the commies were able to turn out their base much better than expected.

It really didn't have much other reason than that. Their GOTV apparatus is still better than the Republican one.

Posted by: Vic at November 24, 2010 08:14 AM (e4sSD)

26 Put me down with those saying that if TSA started groping people earlier, it wouldn't have affected any of the House or Senate races much.  A seat or two maximum.

Posted by: Kratos (Ghost of Sparta) at November 24, 2010 08:14 AM (9hSKh)

27 It seems like by not raising much of a stink,  travelers are more worried about being blown out of the air by the old white folks, woman and children than giving up their rights and freedoms, which actually is happening.

If they were profiling likely bombers,  I wouldn't have a problem with it. But that wouldn't be fair cuz after all this must be our fault.

Actually what they should do is a separate bill for WH travel. Zero budget and tell them they have already spent everything they are going to get.

30 The outrage is bi-partisan (or, non-partisan).

Really? I've yet to see a leftwinger upset about this. The reaction I've seen from them is mostly just, "Teabaggerz are teh sTuPiD!!! No one wants to touch your jUnK!!!!!! LOLZ!!!"

Though usually not quite that coherent.

36 How about this outrageous shit from Fox. NK starts a shelling campaign and kills people. UN response?

Give them more money!

Even as the world struggles to find workable ways to constrain North KoreaÂ’s expanding nuclear weapons program and unpredictable belligerence, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is planning how to channel new streams of aid and development money to the dangerous regime.

37 I am shocked at how easily the American public seems to accept the TSA.  It is depressing.

On the local TV news yesterday evening, there was a crew soliciting feedback from travelers at San Jose Airport and all those showed on camera didn't mind the body scans and patdowns if they "increased safety", or words to that effect.

I'm beginning to wonder if people in this area would even have a problem with anally probed for explosives hidden in their rectums.

You think those McDonald rejects will come to work the next day?

This will never happen as they have never stopped any terrorist from boarding a plane, but I wonder what would go through their feeble minds if it did or if they even think that it could happen.

57 Part of the issue with the TSA screening policy is that so far it hasn't affected most people.  So the high poll support is based only on theoretical, non-angry-blogger -obtained information.  It reminds me a bit of DADT.  Sure, a majority of the public is in favor of repeal.  Also a majority of the public hasn't and won't serve in the military.  Among service personnel and veterans there is very little honest support for repeal.

I've actually been through the full-body scanner.  They were testing it at the Oakland airport back in August.  For those of you who haven't traveled through Oakland, it is not a very busy airport--I think it's a great alternative to SFO.  In any case, the TSA agents didn't tell me what they were doing--they didn't notify me that there was an opt-out.  I was most frustrated because they make you remove EVERYTHING--not just the metal--from your pockets as well as take off your belts.  I've lost some weight recently (yea, me), and so without a belt my pants were falling down.  It's basically a miserable procedure.

If the public had that kind of experience, I think support would plummet.

60 The screener make 12-16$ an hour full govt benefits.
I know 2 people who tried to get a job with them this summer. One was ex Mil, one had been a manager of a chistian Book store for 12 years. Both out of work and desperate for a job. Both excellent people, clean backgrounds, passed the tests and ultimately rejected.

I am fairly sure they are selecting employees who will not point out this is an illegal order and that they cant do this to people.

There was no reason to reject either man for the job other than the fact they just wouldnt be down with groping old ladies and kids.

That said, I have a friend who is an extremely liberal Shrink who is HIGHLY disturbed by this turn of events. He is stunned that the people he thought were on the side of civil liberties are so callously and gleefully violating them.

He thinks the lesson to kids of "never lets someone touch you there, except of they wear a uniform or are in a position of authority" is criminal. I have never seen someone so disillusioned in my lifeThe idea they will install this process other places freaks him out.

My ultra liberal jewish friend is losing his mind from cognitive dissonance. Hes a pilot and can hardly belive that the "good guys" are doing this. He uses words like  Betrayal.  And Police state.  And has told me "Dont travel"
Hes just about been turned.
This man is a staunch communist. But he was rasied in israel and hes pretty sure that even communists dont do this to you. Pretty much he expected this from republicans and has now discovered the TRUTH.
