9/14-Bush And The Bullhorn. Plus A Question For President Obama
— DrewM

I'm going to start with my open question for President Obama. I wanted to ask this over the weekend but it seemed an inappropriate political moment. I do think it's an important question in evaluating Obama's actions as President.

On September 19th, 2001 then state Senator Barack Obama addressed a rally in Chicago. Here's what he had to say about the attacks just 8 days earlier.

We must also engage, however, in the more difficult task of understanding the sources of such madness. The essence of this tragedy, it seems to me, derives from a fundamental absence of empathy on the part of the attackers: an inability to imagine, or connect with, the humanity and suffering of others. Such a failure of empathy, such numbness to the pain of a child or the desperation of a parent, is not innate; nor, history tells us, is it unique to a particular culture, religion, or ethnicity.

My question for the President is, after nearly 20 months in office and having access to whatever information he needs to exercise his responsibilities as Commander in Chief of the United States armed forces, does he still think "a fundamental absence of empathy" is the "essence" of what motivates the people we are fighting and who have tried to attack on US soils several times during his presidency?

Now, compare Obama's post attack rhetoric with then President George W. Bush's on 9/14/01 at the World Trade Center site.

At what point in time did the concept of collective punishment go out of fashion? There are times when is is appropriate, such as when you have a hostile population that is allowed to hide among those that are not practicing hostilities, yet aid and abet those that do. They are all collectively guilty and culpable.

That would be almost every member of the cult of Mohammad.

A little simpleminded I admit- perhaps an understanding of their murderous "religion" would help in the "find them" part.  Much the same way in which understanding the nesting and mating habits of cockroaches aids in getting them out of your house.

But in the final analysis IMHO anti-terrorism is (or should be) a lot like what the Orkin man does for a living.

If someone declares way against your way of life, either you destroy all of them or they destroy you:

1. Thebes did it to Sparta

2. The North did it to the South

3. The Allies to the Axis

You have to kill enough of the enemy until they give up not only their lives but their ideas.

One of the things I think that confuses most people about Islam is why is it the only religion that is acceptable to many people who are, by in large, against religion?

My theory is this:

In the other two so-called monotheistic religions, G-d is a hidden diety.  "His" ways are hidden and "He" is at a station that is essentially unachievable to common man.  He is infinately good and that goodness, while something for man to strive for, is at a level that is unreachable.

The diety of Islam is different.  From Islam one can infer that its diety is a capricious, impetutuous diety with a character that reflects is some ways the basest of human characterists.  This isn't a diety that is exalted and whose character is hard for man to reflect.  One must only be human, and a base human at that, to reflect that diety's traits.

There is nothing to strive for.  There is no superiority in that diety.  There is nothing to compete with.  And that is what draws some people.

And that is just my ignorant opinion.

I tried that.  I read everything I could by Bin Laden, particularly his 1996 and 1998 fatwas.  I read the entire Quran, more than once.  I studied the ahadith available online.  I buried myself in Islamic law and read Reliance of the Traveller.  And I went to MEMRI to find the many reform-minded Islamic voices which nobody else covers, along with the Quran-thumping jihadi Islamic voices nobody else covers.  And I tried to read every blog by cultural, secular, or 'moderate' Muslims which popped up after 9/11, particularly Iraqis who suddenly had a voice.

And when I began to tell people like Obama what I'd learned, they called me an Islamophobic racist bigot.

72 There was a heartbreaking article in our local paper re 9/11.  Three New Jersey brothers (two live here now) had dreadful experiences on that day.  The one brother who still lives there was late getting to work in the North Tower that day, due to taking his pregnant wife to a doctor's appt.  As he walked toward the towers, he saw the first plane hit, in his offices.  He was so shaken, he went into a Catholic church to pray.  When he came out, he watched the second plane hit.  A woman standing a few feet away from him was hit by a piece of the plane and cut in half.  He witnessed another woman, a jumper, land feet first, and "just flatten" in his words.

I can't get those images out of my mind.

Someone linked PJ O'Rourke's review of Jimmah Cartah's book in the Megaton thread.

Here's our peanut farming POTUS:

When I was young and in high school, during World War II, I thought Hirohito was the cruelest man in the world next to Hitler. I blamed the whole Pacific conflict on him. Years later . . . we went to Tokyo and called on a sweet little elderly man, who raised flowers in his hothouse at the palace. . . . This was Emperor Hirohito - as far removed from my conception of him as he possibly could be.

Now, first of all, the banality of evil is utterly lost to this one.

He apparently truly thinks that if Hitler had survived and lived to be 85, Carter would have imagined meeting him and finding him chanting lunatic rites to Satan and trying to stab his Jewish senior-care nurse with a plastic spork.

He is apparently shocked to learn that Hirihito is human, with human qualities - good and bad, monstrous and relatable - even decades after the war and it's monstrosities ended.

Is it truly so unbelivable that the man who saw it as his divine right to rule the pacific also happens to be polite to visitors and enjoys gardening?

But what reminds me of this... Obama seems, like many, to think that if only he could sit down and have a cup of coffee with Bin Laden, Bin Laden would be as shocked as Carter was to meet Hirohito, and having been blindsided by this, suddenly as reviled as John Stewart at the bombing of Hiroshima (which was, it turns out, an act of sublime mercy that may well have saved Japanese civilization).

That Al Quaeda is blowing us up because they view us the way Carter saw Hirohito or Hitler, as a ridiculous (and ridiculously false) demonized charicature. That if only Bin Laden saw that Obama loves his children he would suddenly discover common ground and have empathy for Americans (no less - the way many like Carter would do for the Japanese, forgetting entirely the Baatan Death March and the Rape of Nanking, just because Hirohito likes pretty flowers).

That if only they understood us, they wouldn't want to blow us up anymore.

It's like an onion... it's got the 'layers' thing going with teh stupid. It's also very, very arrogant.

At least Jimmy Carter went in expecting a raving violent psychopathic lunatic.

Obama apparently expects to find Bin Laden writing sonnets and raising pigeons in his cave.

All atheists please skip this post.

In Christianity you must become "Christ-like" first before doing good works. Otherwise, they are empty works. We are justified by faith not works. Works come later to show our devotion to Christ working in our lives.

In Christian theology, anyone think they be justified by doing good deeds is a fool. G*d created the universe, how can anyone equal His good works.

Yeah, so here's the troll doing the usual non-sequitur changing of the subject.

It's full of the usual lefty argument tropes: Change the subject, assert "facts" that are not readily available so that when somebody looks them up, you've changed tack.  There is no shame in this.  Fundamentally, lefties have no conscience at all.

How do you look in the mirror at yourself, when you're a lying bastard, Mr. (I+7Zv)?

I will assume your premise and point out that a "Christian" country is different from a "Muslim" country.  In a Muslim country, they kill Christians individually before it gets to the point of genocide.  In a Christian country, the Muslim minority is the one perpetuating the genocide.

82 Osama Obama was a fucking treasonous Muzzie-symp in 2001. Nothing has changed. The only thing different now is that he has the power to hand America over to the savage Muzzie hordes.

My main beef with Dubya is that he wrote some checks post-9/11 that he couldn't/wouldn't cash. Bringing the 9/11 perps to justice? The House of Sau'd is still in power; so are the Iranian, Paki, Afghan and other Muzzie scum who actively aided and abetted the terrorist murderers.

Bush didn't/couldn't do the right thing. The Traitor-in-Chief actively supports the murderous filth that want to destroy America.

85 Bush followed Clinton in office, and Bin Laden and his masterminds were free to plot and execute the September 11 attacks. Obama followed Bush, and there have have been three attacks -- Major Nidal Hassan at Fort Hood, Times Square and the undiebomber. Each attack has taught us something. Hassan, if our military were not forced to be so PC, would have been stopped before he could kill. Instead, we lost good men and women because our military leaders were afraid to speak out. The other two attacks failed *not because the system worked* but because the War On Terror worked. By bombing the ever-loving shit out of Afghanistan and the Paskistan border and analyzing wire transfers and communication among our enemies, they could not properly train jihadis to come here and kill more innocent Americans. Fuck Obama. He is the worst President the US has ever had.

"Yes, yes, yes.....its always our fault. We don't understand these poor souls. If only we were more understanding, more sympathetic, more tolerant, why, none of this stuff would happen."

Additional analysis:

Condescending Undertone #1.  The reason we don't understand and aren't more sympathetic is because we're a horde of uneducated bumpkins who don't fully appreciate what an Ivy League Education even means, let alone have the ability to acquire one.

Condescending Undertone #2:  Christians did it too.  And probably still do, somewhere, under the cloak of American Exceptionalism.  At least, that's the gist of what I got from Rev. Most recently at the airport greeting returning troops, and going to Iraq on Thanksgiving 2003, was another tear jerker.

His speech before congress after 9/11 was probably his best.  He rose to the occasion. It was a wonderful speech by any standard, but coming from a guy not known for his communication, it was unbelievable.

Most of us never thought he was a "brilliant speaker," this shiftless fartsock from Chicago. And why would we? Think about his statement, which is supposed to be specifically about 9/11. You could apply the same statement to any of the following: A serial murderer Burglaries in old folks' homes Someone who drowns puppies in a river A hit-and-run fenderbender A litterer In fact that statement is so anodyne, so toothless and so general that it is a triviality raised into psychosis, a means to deny reality. Little Lord Earflaps McOrganizer bends over backwards to avoid the most obvious conclusions about 9/11. He deems it a "tragedy" of no larger significance than the lack of consideration shown by some shitprick who smokes Kools outside the White House, flicking around his butts.

It's actually much worse than that.  The "achievement supreme" is to kill and be killed for Allah (9.111).  There are many other ayats which make it clear the best level of paradise is reserved for 'martyrs' who die in battle against the unbelievers.  9.38 is another, Bin Laden's fave:

YUSUFALI: O ye who believe! what is the matter with you, that, when ye are asked to go forth in the cause of Allah*, ye cling heavily to the earth? Do ye prefer the life of this world to the Hereafter? But little is the comfort of this life, as compared with the Hereafter.

Revolution.  Islam promises violent revolution and Communists have attached themselves to every revolutionary movement because, in their theology,
the chaos comes and will be replaced with a dictatorship of the proletariat.  Well, Marxism has evolved beyond the old commie line to something a lot more indistinct, but the Lefties are basically underpants gnomes now:

159 116 If you really wanted to get lib black folks undies in a wad, you could point out to them that the people who sold their ancestors into slavery were....Muslims.  And Barry is descended from them on his daddy's side.

Therefore, our first Black presnit's ancestors were slavers.

Work with me here, morons.

Yeah, there is actually some discussion among the Henry Louis Gates academic types about this, and some controversy.  If you look into the slave trade, the first thing you realize is that the Europeans weren't running around Africa with butterfly nets.  They bought them from traders on the continent, often Arab Muslims.  They in turn bought them from black Africans of other tribes who had the slaves as prisoners of war or spoils of war.

But if you really want some historical fun: The whole reason slavery was made legal in the colonies was due to a lawsuit filed by a black African.  Although there's some dispute as to whether Anthony Johnson (indentured servant from Angola) was the first slaveowner, it was his suit that made slavery legal in Virginia.  Until then, there was indentured servitude -- even forced indentured servitude for Africans -- but they would be free after a number of years and their children were free.

A reasonable argument could be made that, had he not filed the suit in 1653, the zeitgeist in the colonies would have continued the practice of indentured servitude for long enough that slavery would have been impossible to implement.

"Actually, I think ambrosia was peach jello with fruit cocktail, marshmallows and coconut flakes topped with Cool Whip."

The stuff my mother made was apricot or peach Jell-o with sliced peaches, cottage cheese, and Cool Whip all mixed in.  She might've gotten it wrong, or tinkered with the recipe, because she was Catholic, and likely learned the recipe from her mother-in-law (Dad's mom was Norwegian Lutheran).

I recall this clearly.  Very, very clearly.  Once that gelatin was set, that stuff wasn't gonna live to see sundown.  Few things in my childhood life made me happier than coming home from school, opening the fridge for a snack, and seeing the Corningware dish mom would use for this stuff sitting on the bottom shelf...undulating softly from the disturbance of the door pulled open.

Lutefisk is definitely a crime against humanity.  So long as I'm reminiscing, mom has a story that, shortly after she and dad got married, he came home from work one night to the BLAST of fish-stink at the front door.  As delicately as he could, he asked mom, "What are you making for dinner?"

"Lutefisk.  I called your mom and got a recipe on how to prepare it.  She said she made fishballs all time when you were growing up...don't you like it?"

"@#$)% no!  Those were terrible!"

I'd guess that Obama has never thought that "an absence of empathy" is behind the attacks. It's more likely that he believes that America is deeply flawed and, as a result, has brought these attacks on herself because of her actions in places like the Palestinian Territories. In other words, we completely deserve it. One of these days, he'll get off the 'prompter and say so. Mark my words.

217 It's become more and more apparent what a fraud Obama is.  Even the most craven of his supporters had to acknowledge that he was the most inexperienced, least qualified presidential candidate in history.  But even the modest accomplishments of his adult life that were tallied under his name are now exposed as frauds:

--Columbia: what were the grades that got him into Harvard Law School?

--President of the Harvard Law Review: although he was a good politician in getting elected, what did he do on the Review?  Reports are: not much.  As one contemporary on the HLR put it, he seemed more interested in getting elected president than in doing anything as president.

--Law practice in Chicago: partners in his firm say he sat around "working" on his book, which leads us to:

--Dreams from My Father: seems pretty clear now that Bill Ayers took a lead role in writing the book.  And, of course, Jon Favreau wrote the second one.

--Chairman of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge: the final report said that they wasted over $100 million in tax-exempt, charitable funds.

--Illinois State Senate: he had all of his primary opponents disqualified on technicalities, then voted present hundreds of times, claimed credit for bills on which he had little input, and won't release his records.

--U.S. Senate campaign: the sealed divorce records of both his primary and general election opponents were leaked to the media, effectively allowing him to run unopposed.

--Presidential campaign: after only two years in the U.S. Senate, he began his presidential campaign.  He gamed the primary system and rigged some crucial caucuses.  He violated his pledge to take matching funds in the general election and in fact accepted unprecedented amounts of illegal foreign contributions, basically stealing the election.  (Did you know that the feds are still auditing the McCain campaign, which accepted federal funds, while Obama's campaign finances have never been scrutinized?)  All with the more-or-less open collusion of the MFM.

My God, what have we done!

218 does he still think "a fundamental absence of empathy" is the "essence" of what motivates the people we are fighting and who have tried to attack on US soils several times during his presidency?

No, now I think they're mostly motivated by racism.

We're talking about the teabaggers, right?

Also from this article...As a state Senator, Obama threatened to kick the ass of a fellow Senator.

That's the funny part.  He would probably slap and scratch like a girl.  Puss.

221 116 If you really wanted to get lib black folks undies in a wad, you could point out to them that the people who sold their ancestors into slavery were....Muslims.  And Barry is descended from them on his daddy's side.

Therefore, our first Black presnit's ancestors were slavers.

LL, I'm afraid you're wrong on this one. The Chicago Tribune sued to have Jack Ryan's divorce settlement unsealed, and the courts bought it on the grounds (and you'll laugh when you hear this) of the public's "right to know". The only thing more disgusting than Obama's own record is the way the MFM has run interference for him every step of the way.

"Miss me yet?"

Yeah, I do.  Flaws and all, W is a man and an unabashed patriot.  A great moment.  His speech to the country a few days later was also great.

227 If the problem with Al Queda is that they lack empathy, what steps could one take to attempt to help them develop it? The above, of course, is an absurd question, but let's ask it. If the 'understanding' that Obama is bringing to the 'madness' of those who were behind 9-11 is that they 'lack empathy', what steps has he taken to address Osama Bin Ladin and his cohorts lack of empathy? Well he listens to them, first of all. He listens very carefully to what they are saying. As he pointed out in his press conference last week, he's been reading and listening to what Al Queda says in it's official press releases and propaganda videos. And they are CONSTANTLY complaining about Gitmo. It's common idea among liberals that the chief way to build empathy in those who do not have it as an innate quality is to DEMONSTRATE it to them. In other words, we take their complaints at face value and then respond in a way that appeases them, demonstrating that we care about their point of view, and are open to talking. This is the motive behind the 7-years-long stupidity of trying to close Gitmo. Because we are trying to build empathy in people who don't have any. We are oh-so-concerned about THEIR point of view and what they don't like and we are willing to change things around and try to make them feel better about us. And on the 9th anniversary of the towers coming down and the murder of 3,000 Americans the President wants to assure everybody he is still listening to what Al Queda is saying and has taken note of their complaints about Gitmo and is working on that particular problem. I can't WAIT for this guy to ride off into the sunset.

228 Interesting how one religion just happens to draw so many individuals who have this "fundamental absence of empathy."

Yeah it's weird inn't?

When you genitally mutilate your daughters at age 8 and then marry them off to an aged business partner at age 10.

What sort of sons are these human chattel likely to breed once they hit puberty?

PETA my arse!
